Thanks for these VLOGS! I've been watching them daily, looking forward to the time I can do it. Thanks for taking the time to record them - it's an inspiration.
Thank you so so much dixie for this video, just made my day. It just freshens up my most cherished moments in the Usa, I loved the Delware water gap....it was beautiful,i wanted to stay there much longer when I was there but time didnt permit.Thank you again and btw I loved the way you sing, you sound great :)
+Homemade Wanderlust Youre welcome :), actually me and my friends were on our way to Nyc from Chicago,I was driving and some positive energy pushed me to exit the highway and I had no clue that I made an exit that would lead me to DWG...lol! I have a dream that in my next visit to usa im definitely hiking the applachian trail and you are the inspiration.I am glad you felt the same. thanks... :~ )
I used to live about 13 miles further into New Jersey from High Point State Park, but moved away to Florida in 2006. It is beautiful in that tri-state area.
I happened to be on the on that bridge yesterday, driving though. Being that I live in NJ I've hiked to all of those overlooks shown and seen my share of bear. They are all over the place here. NJ actually has some nice places. Many people don't realize it's not all refineries and warehouses.
So if you watched the video on a computer it should have had the date, but I watched it on my phone and the date didn't show up. The video starts on July 30. Next time it'll be in the main editing. ~editor
Oh man - MOSQUITOES! I remember backpacking on the Superior Hiking Trail years ago in the dead of July and going through a particularly swampy area. The mosquitoes were SO BAD that even though I had doused myself in DEET they were still eating me alive. I had to put on my rain gear - pants AND jacket, and pull every string closure as tight as I could and wear that as I got through that area and to higher ground. Never mind that it was in the 90's and I was bundled up in non-breathable clothing...that was all I could do to get through that spot mentally and physically still put together!
Ah, Billy Joel. I think 'We didn't start the fire" and 'It's the end of the world as we know it' from R.E.M. remind us of our recent and not so recent past. Love it!
Were you wearing any repellant? I have a natural repellant made from essential oils and am wondering if it will work when I hike in Minnesota. (I've heard the mosquitos are bad there) Right now I'm living in NM and we don't really have mosquitos bc its too dry here.
I feel your pain regarding mosquitoes! My s/o and I hiked part of the Ice Age Trail in the month of July (ppp* on my part). Clouds of voracious mosquitoes everyday and hot enough to make it a challenge to keep bug spray on through the sweat... *piss poor planning
Great vlogs! I grew up in this area of NJ and am very familiar with everything you pointed out. Apple Pie Bakery rocks! I always get a pot pie when I pass thru. Watching your trip makes me want to do it :-)
+cchgn Yes, it is rare! Which is why I mentioned it in the video. It was a blue moon that night :) And you are right--a blue moon is the second full moon in one month.
Having fun going back to watch your early videos (2020 cabin fever). Attacks by our state bird, the mosquito, is 'Jersey karma' for not learning a Springsteen song instead of that Long Islander Billy Joel. jk. #44
I remember trying to outrun those nasty biting flies when I was a kid, always missed them when I swatted, so I'd have to wait until they landed on my head and got tangled up, thes smack them, end of the day a head full of dried out squished flies in my hair. That was gross.
I know this is a couple years late, but I have a few week long backpacking trips planned this summer in ny and pa. In June July and August. How hot or humid was it? Did it get cool at night? Trying to figure out what clothes and sleeping system is needed there. Thank you!!! Enjoy your new adventure.
Great update! I love seeing animals in their natural habitat. New Jersey apparently has some very beautiful views, I only passed through Camden and I stayed there briefly. I enjoy your singing very much. And I totally appreciate Jazz music!!! Sorry about the mosquitos : ( being from the South, I would have thought your tolerance level would be higher but I'm not judging. It was more of a reference to the fact that the Deep South is humid and mosquito ridden, I grew up in South Carolina. Be safe and continue to conquer those miles. I start my journey this week, I'm walking from California to the East Coast. I hope to be able to make stops and check in on your updates as often as I can, I look forward to them every week, but I'll be out in the deserts for a month or two possibly. God Bless and I hope you catch up to your Fam soon. Btw., You Are Amazing : )
Btw., that's pretty impressive memorization. I remember that song from when I was a kid and I was a Billy Joel fan (he was married to Christy Brinkley at the time, she's the model that always made a cameo driving a red Ferrari in the Chevy Chase National Lampoon Vacation films : ) Joel and Bruce Springsteen (The Boss) really did a great job articulating the essence of America, Life and Love through their music. Keep singing, you could come to Hollywood and pursue the arts one day. You may have a better shot at stardom than I did : )p and be sure to post whether or not frog pee gets you intoxicated.lol I may wanna chase it with some Jack Daniels : )p
Misquotes always bother me. I will be outside for 5min and have a few bites on me that swell up immediately, but they won't bother my wife any. When we're out hiking, I typically have to either wear a long sleeve shirt, or long pants. I've read that they're attracted to specific blood types, as well. I never leave the house without bug spray, especially in the summer.
Good question. I don't live near that stuff, but I am terrified of going to places where it is. I worked with a woman who said her dad was painfully crippled by Lyme disease. No-see-ums are enough for me.
I think you have a few hours to catch them if they do bite you, they need to hang on for a long while to pass it on. If you regularly check yourself you should be fine. I was worried on my last trip but checked regularly and was fine. I think leafy areas with deer and mice you need to be extra careful.
Hm. Like you were told you can't camp anywhere? I don't remember stealth camping restrictions there. There were bears galore in NY/NJ. But, shelters were common. Water is a little sketch in NY (or was for me, anyway). I recommend getting the AT Guide by AWOL. Seriously! I'm so excited for your trip!!!
I'm asking the question to anyone who hiked the AT or have knowledge about it : does Dixie had more hotel nights than an average thru-hiker? Just wondering, because hotels in Canada (prov. of Quebec) are quite expensive (usually 100$/night, 50 if you half it with somebody else). Watching all the vlogs, it seems that Dixie is doing it a lot, must be expensive even if its worth it I'm sure! :o
I’ve watched every video on this playlist until now, and I’m looking forward to the rest of them. Thank you for documenting it. It’s inspiring. Be part of the greatest love story ever told.... God Loves YOU. He loves YOU soooo much He pays attention to everything you do. God Loves YOU soooo much He came down from On High (a place of infinite joy and happiness) to humbly take the form of a Human being. Walk through what it’s like to have to be cared for, eat, work, live. He then was wrongfully and painfully tortured, spit on and mocked. He was nailed to a cross and hung there... 9 hours... until His fleshly body gave out. He did all of that... just to get closer to YOU. God Loves you soooo much. But do YOU Love HIM? Admit to God that you’ve done bad things in your life. Things you can never take back. Admit to God you’ve thought things you know you shouldn’t have. Admit to God that you’ve said somethings you know you shouldn’t have. Admit to God you’ve done somethings you know were wrong. Admit to God that you have hurt people. Admit to God that you have done things that you know are wrong and you don’t have the power to make it right. Confess that Jesus Christ is God. That He walked among us as the Christ sent by God to bring us back to Him. Profess Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior. Get baptized by full immersion in water. Die to your old self and be reborn. Pray to God for wisdom and Truth. Receive the Holy Spirit. Trust the Holy Spirit that will dwell in YOU and Listen to nothing else. May God Bless You and keep you safe.

Darling your killin' me with that tour of the great Apple Pie Bakery ..................... Y U M !!!

Welcome to NJ.
I happened to be on the on that bridge yesterday, driving though. Being that I live in NJ I've hiked to all of those overlooks shown and seen my share of bear. They are all over the place here. NJ actually has some nice places. Many people don't realize it's not all refineries and warehouses.
Very cool! I really enjoyed NJ :)
Great food, great views and a great song you are learning. Great album for sure. I've got it if it's playing but not without the music.
Life is a rock!
I was just at NJ's highpoint a week or so ago! Keep up the great work -- good luck on catching the Fam!
So if you watched the video on a computer it should have had the date, but I watched it on my phone and the date didn't show up. The video starts on July 30. Next time it'll be in the main editing.

Haha I saw the date! Thank you so much for putting that in! :-)

5:48 nice singing... damn cute all around.
Haha My dad was a history teacher. He made his HS students memorize that song, and then write their own new verse. :)
Oh man, that's so cool! Haha
It would impress people if you memorized the song but I don't think it's a good history lesson - it's incoherent.
You are closing in now with under 900 miles to go... time to start planning your next hike. Maybe the PCT
liking how there is more fear in your face from the mosquitoes than the bears :)
Haha, there was actual pain. I was about to go insane!
completely understood :)

mosquitos are awful in MN. When I have camped in MN (grew up here and camped my whole life). I've used the natural repel bug spray and it worked.
I feel your pain regarding mosquitoes! My s/o and I hiked part of the Ice Age Trail in the month of July (ppp* on my part). Clouds of voracious mosquitoes everyday and hot enough to make it a challenge to keep bug spray on through the sweat...

Best quote taken from this: "Drinkin frog pee... that's my water today" lol

+Jonsoar DO IT! DO IT! DO IT! :)
We didn't start the fire, it was always burning
......good ol' Billy Joel!
WATERMELLON MAN! WOOOP!
I LOVE THAT SONG....LOL
I think you should carry mosquito repellent. Deet. - Thanks for sharing. I know it slows you down to film - don't trip!
so you never said if anyone caught fish with the fishing pole yawl got from those guys going to the fishing derby????
Hiking or jogging with earbuds in is a bad idea in security terms. It deprives you of auditory info.
FYI, a Blue Moon is when a full moon happens twice in the same month. The 2nd one is a Blue Moon. Actually pretty rare.
+cchgn Yes, it is rare! Which is why I mentioned it in the video. It was a blue moon that night :) And you are right--a blue moon is the second full moon in one month.

YES! BILLY JOEL: WE DIDN'T START THE FIRE.
We Didn't Star the Fire! It was always burnin' since the world's been turnin'!

Did the mosquitoes eventually go away? We hiked the AT in VT and they were so aggressive we had to run to keep them off of us.
FYI, Delaware Water Gap is one the seven natural wonders of the world, not NJ.

whats the tower called?
You are in my state?
Did you ever get ticks? How did you deal with Lyme Disease?
Good question. I don't live near that stuff, but I am terrified of going to places where it is. I worked with a woman who said her dad was painfully crippled by Lyme disease. No-see-ums are enough for me.

So I have a question, planning a practice run hike this summer Pa-NY How was camping in Jersey, because I was told you cant really stay anywhere?

I know I wrote about all of these areas in my blog. Check it out, too:

Homemade Wanderlust Thank you, good luck on the PCT
We didn't start the fire!!! ♫♫♫♫
Ninja skeeters! Go to warp speed sista!
Long live Billy Joel !!!
We didn't start the fire!!! I know all the lyrics also haha
This video showed what a bad day on the trail was really like...the look of exhaustion and disgust on your face...it was disturbingly honest...
There are good and bad days for sure. A bad day on trail is still always better than a good day at work! :)

She mentioned a hostel in this video. The pricing for a hostel is nowhere near as expensive as a motel or hotel.
I've heard to many bad jokes about NJ water to drink that stuff. I'd probably wind up packing the extra weight of more bottled water myself.
One of the 7 natural wonders of NJ is, why would you live there.
