The table that compares physical features of the m/b is so underrated.... it works much better than those compare plugins from the manufacturer websites.... your channel is underrated too.... thx for your work

I love her reviews, she inspects every quality, that all other reviewers miss. So I watch her reviews even if I watched other TH-cam reviews. My first experience was with her reviews on a SSDs.
Absolutely spot on. I too like the way she present products. She is calm and very detailed.
Yeah the SSD one was really good
She didn't talk about the PCIE 3.0/4.0 switch, the fact that most of these boards don't have a proper quantity of PCI lanes routed to the non-cpu PCI ports (some boards have to split the 16x, some boards only have two lanes routed to the extra PCI slots), and failed to recognize the 60W power output for the front panel USB-C ports and how they need to get powered by 6-pin power plugs. One of the only channels reviewing a wide range of motherboards yet ended up spending more time ranking and picking a favorite than covering the quirks and oddities to look out for.
Trying to find info on these new boards during my research is turning up ambiguous info. I'd really prefer some of the questionable quirks to be demystified instead of shunning and throwing out options in favor of a wonky pick like the hero board. With the availability of the entire range being spotty I'm less interested in an endorsement and would really prefer to see testing, in depth analysis, and some fully illustrated comparing and contrasting instead of rattling off a list of detail for each one that can be found on the motherboard's respective webpages.

I think NZXT B550 was a really good option last gen. 6 layer PCB and cheap for like 200€ (prices are varying from 200-300$ all the time on different models)

I waiting for B650E ROG strix but Asus didn't sell yet in my country, only prime and TUF gaming which is lacking PCIe 5.0
@@boboboy8189 u dont need pcie 5 unless you want to go nvme pcie 5.
and even then unless you are doing content with hundreds of gigs or terabytes it's pointless.. just look it has good caps, support, pcb layers, and other things you might need or want.

Had already settled on the STRIX, thanks for confirming that choice! I agree, love the Asus BIOS, well laid out and stable. My old Rampage IV - Black Edition is where that theme started! There is also a Strix F and A for slightly cheaper than the E. Looking forward to reviews!

I also settled on the Strix E yesterday when comparing side by side. I would've loved to have USB4 to simplify some of my connectivity setup via a dock but the Hero only having 2 full connectivity PCIe slots kills it for me as I currently use two Optane add-in cards (which are PCIe x4 connectors)

Thank you for this excellent round-up. I went for the Gene in the end and I'm delighted with it. It's expensive, but beautifully made and it doesn't really have any competition in the mATX space. I figured it'll last me several years as we go through new generations of Ryzen processors, if AMD keeps its promise to support the AM5 socket until at least 2025 or so. I also do have some Thunderbolt peripherals which I use with my Macs, so this may come in handy.
Clicked as soon I seen loaded. Really feeling the itx board. Looking to go driveless and run most of my files from my NAS and a USB drive.
Ooh, I really like the tables you made to compare the various boards based on price, fan headers, RGB headers, etc. Much easier to parse than opening a separate tab for each board to look at the specs for each board haha(because PCPartPicker it good, but not perfect). Thank you for the great content!
Also, very exciting to see USB4 ports starting to appear on some back-panel I/O! I'm hoping my next board will have USB4. The dream of a single-cable to have a "remote desktop" (i.e. desktop is in a completely separate room of the house from my actual desk allowing for a cool and silent work/play environment) is approaching hopefully! (Now optical USB4/TB4 cables just need to drop in price haha)

I think the x670e Proart motherboard is the most underrated mobo here. It's not flashy as the ROG, but look at those connectivity options and set of features.
I LOVE this one! I've been eyeing the AM4 ones, but this is even better. Looks the best too, imo.

Yeah, I didn't notice it until I'd already ordered and recieved a Hero, but the ProArt has most if not all of the connectivity of the Hero (including USB4) at a significant discount, on account of not having as many VRMs (which appears completely fine if you're not planning on doing any OC) or RGB (which I personally find a bit tacky). The DisplayPort pass-through isn't even something I'd noticed until I stumbled upon this video just now, and it's actually a great idea that I can't understand why it's not standard on all USB-C gaming motherboards.
I'm glad I never claimed that I'm reasonable. I ordered and now own the X670E Extreme board. I just want to make sure I have ALL the options I could possibly want. And I know I'm gonna be keeping this new build for nearly 5 years before I upgrade again. So I'm fine with buying the best of the best now, and riding it through this entire socket, until I upgrade again. It's why I'm also planning on getting the 4090. Plus, once you break it down, it ends up being less than $1,000 per year. Not to bad for a hobby, and a device that I'll end up using every single day.

One thing you need to mention in further previews is how many PCB layers the motherboards have. They range from 4 for low end boards and 6 for mid to high range boards.
For 99.9% of people out there these few extra layers mean absolutley nothing.

Thought that difference betwin "e" boards and none, is that the E version don't share the PCI-E Lanes with the M2 slots. But going on Asus HP it says that if M2 is installed, the PCI port only goes with 8x.

These prices are an absurd, if i were to build a PC right now, i'd just skip the whole thing until prices would be acceptable. Everyone should do the same, embargo so that they wake up - Keep buying and they keep rising.

The strix x670e-a looks pretty good in white and doesn't lose any features that I really care about compared to the other strix e and f options. I am probably going to go for that. Just waiting for raptor lake first to see if we have any price drops in the upcoming months.

I love your overview. You are right $1000.00 for a board is out of control. It will be interesting when you start doing the benchmarking with the 4090 and the new Radeon cards. Which one of those boards have the usb c on the header that allows 27 watts or 60 watts of charging and do they all have the header port that you can connect your usb c case to?

I just picked up the ROG X670E Extream MoBo with a 7950X CPU 32Gbs of RAM & i'm super happey with my choice. The lower temps over my 5950X I'm happy with it. Work & play with this build.
I onlt upgrades my MoBo, CPU & RAM. So, nothing else more to get really I had everything else.
3:36 "Big heatsinks all around", but buildzoid from actually hardcore overclocking said that the heatsinks are only necessary if you do LN2 overclocking, because they don't produce enough heat even with water cooling.

I am still using the system I built back in November 2012 using the i7 2600k cpu, Asus MB and 980Ti as the major hardware. The system, while still working, needs to be upgraded. My builds do more than game. I also use this system for editing many large photos using photoshop, lightroom, Topaz and other editing software. Since I don't upgrade every generation and the system is designed for double duty, I am going with the Asus Hero even though the Strix is a very compelling option because; 1) the additional storage capability with the additional m.2 and Sata storage options (do more than just game), 2) USB4...so I don't have to upgrade board later and I do lots of big file dumps, 3) I don't look to upgrade with each generation and use the hardware much longer than the masses and want to get all that is needed on the initial build and that is where I get my price to performance value. The debate of whether to go with the Hero or Strix is real that is for sure and Asus knows this and dangles that carrot in front of you by adding small bits to sway buyers one way or the other...damn. Because I am on a longer upgrade path than usual/most and the system does double duty work, I am doing this 10 year anniversary build using all top tier hardware because it will most likely last me another 10 years. With that said, do you have a video that discusses the higher end motherboards and cards in more detail? That comparison table is much more visible that trying to decipher each MB separately for sure and makes it easier to see the differences to make an informed purchase decision.

The B650 boards will limit the gen 5 connectors to just 1 or 2 beside the cpu, costing less to produce and hence be cheaper. Similarly I hope they do something about the lids on the new cpu lineup, I mean it gets so hot cos the heat transfer not fast enough cos of the thickness. Maybe they address this with the X3D
Any issues noticeable with the new boards and the chips
So ive noticed the board ASUS ROG STRIX X670E-E GAMING WIFI 6E Socket AM5 is back ordered but main thing i was curious about is does the first Gen releases of these kinda boards ever restock or is it a one time drop kinda thing on release and then they are never restocked since the hype of the chip release dies down and they wont sell as many as time goes on?

Something I'm wondering about, I heard some reviewers say that some PCIe M.2 ports share bandwidth with the PCIe port for the graphics card while other ones do not. This seems concerning as we may see a big drop to performance in some situations. Do you know anything about this you could share? It's hard finding absolute verification of this and it's important for consumers to know.

Hey Nada. Did you ever run into any coil whine with these boards or any other of the X670E line? I've just heard a lot online about coil whine specifically from some mid-high end of the Asus motherboards. But maybe it's just bad luck? Just seem to have quite a lot complaining about it for this generation.
im not upgrading till the 3d cpus but it will be a itx board so hopefully there is more x670e itx boards out by then !! but i do have my eye on that strix itx :)
Asus should launch PRIME-P motherboard. The one on X570 was a beast - dirt cheap, amazingly efficient VRM and doing the job very well.

Hey, what would you recommend the GENE mATX or the Hero?
I got the hero one which came with combo of cosair ddr5 ram and 7950x was too good of a deal to pass up.
The only one I would be very interested would be the mini ITX board.

At the $500 price point, the ProArt seems like a much better buy than the Strix since it has both USB4 and the 10gig ethernet in exchange for postcodes and physical buttons. Is there anything else to know about the ProArt that limits it - like does it have a different BIOS that doesn't enable overclocking, is the VRM not as good, or is the cooling inadequate?
The VRM is very adequate for even a 7950x, bios is essentially the same as far as I know (I watched Asus's live stream about it), look at the spec sheet on asus's site. The proart isn't getting the attention it deserves IMO. It's always nice to see a mature looking motherboard without RGB, and just sticks to business.
If you don’t need usb4 save money and buy the TUF

Using it for Game dev in particular, noticed with my current pc that I tend to run out of Vram and memory, so that's why I chose the a770 with the 16gb of vram for a reasonable price and I need a motherboard with 128gb of memory capability for future expansion

Will there be versions of the TUF and PRIME without WiFi? A shame they still didn't make 10G Ethernet standard on this generation of motherboards.
10G would just make motherboards even more expensive. People in need of 10G Ethernet in my opinion are quite a niche collective.
10 Gig LAN costs about 50-70 dollars or so, so don't expect that soon. TUF comes without WiFi too in theory, but haven't seen any stores list it yet. No idea about Prime.

I honestly don't remember off the top of my head. Both can handle any CPU, just make sure you get the connections you need imho.

I have a question, as I am very confused by those Asus boards. For those boards with the Intel JHL8540 USB4, if I read all over the internet, the USB can also be used as a Thunderbolt, as they say it's work on the same protocol. . On the manual from Asus for the BIOS settings, there is a section mention the settings for the Thunderbolt. In de board manual however they don't speak about the Thunderbolt. So I emailed Asus about this and there they say if it's not mentioned in the manual there is no Thunderbolt, but it's hard to believe, that on the extreme, for the price, they have disabled the Thunderbolt and for the cheaper boards they have enabled.
Can you tell me if you have tested the extreme and checked the BIOS if there's the Thundebolt section mentioned?

I'm wondering how these boards split their 5.0 lanes... for example the strix with three 5.0 m.2 slots, if populating all three, does the pcie16 slot 'downgrade' to x8 ???
Asus doesn't make it easy to figure these things out... At least Gigabyte has a block diagram of their mobos and i really like that. Asus's website and mobo info makes it a lot harder to figure these things out.

All of this board come with wifi+Bluetooth. You no longer need to buy separate Bluetooth card
Does vrm matters? I having a tuf x670e as it was cheap, dont really oc, but i play cod most exclusively. Was hoping i took the right choice 😅

I bought the Asus X670E Extreme on release day, can't wait to use it.
I have little time left so I said F it and ordered it.
Coming after a year - glad everything has become much cheaper and prices are established. Certainly I understand the price increase over AM4 since LGA socket, pcie5, ddr5 and TSMC price increase are playing their roles in that.
Are you able to test if thunderbolt 4 works on the usb4 asus motherboards? As far as I can tell it's completely unanswered online if the thunderbolt 4 controllers Asus is using for USB4 support in these motherboards is having the thunderbolt 4 portion disabled in the BIOS, or if they just aren't advertising the support but it works anyway.

You missed the Rog Strix x670E-A. It falls between the Tuf/Prime and the Rog Strix E-E, both in price and features. There's also a VERY slightly higher end Rog Strix s670E-F, to help fill out the alphabet! Honestly, though, they're not much different from any of them or each other. (Strangely, the F seems to fall between the A and the E, at least price-wise!) I think that they mainly exist to plug the hole in the price range between $350 and $500, at $420 and 450.
Is it me, or does it seem like Asus basically decides what price points they wanted to cover across the board, then struggled to actually figure out now what features would actually differentiate those boards at those price points?

You're right though, every year they kinda stuggle to add/remove some features so that most boards make some sort of sense. And every year a few models stand out more/less.
