I learned loose-leaf guilding about 25-30 years ago in Australia. We were taught not to use full sheets and cut pieces to fit to prevent wastage. We're also taught to scold between each layer when it dries (which is using gilding mop with just boiled plain water) - it flattens it and helps achieve the final mirror like finish. Then burnish finally with velvet. We also used brushes to signwrite the lettering instead of cutting it out. We also hold our book, knife and tip in one hand as we guild.
Lovely mate. I have only done a very small piece of gilded glass, a cabochon as a test piece, with the image scratched out. This video has made me want to explore it again. Thanks.
Thank you Elena, the ratio is one gelatin capsule per pint (about 500 ml) of distilled water. Heat the water first, do not boil it. I heat it in a clean container in a microwave. The container is only ever used for this one purpose to ensure it is not contaminated. For the gloss painting, I simply paint it straight onto the glass and later straight over the gold. The gloss is an oil/solvent based and has excellent adhesion to non porous surfaces. I hope this helps!
Super awesome videos!! I've read that it isn't really static that the gilders tip picks up, but a trace amount of oil, so you can rub it on your forehead too, to help pick up the gold. U hope you keep putting videos up - I am mostly interested in gold leaf on calligraphy manuscripts, but I live sign painting and gilded windows! Fascinating art!! Thank you, Marina in Ohio.

@drakesis I would opt for the static method. There is a lot of control over the leaf as you lay it. There are drawbacks as each leaf of gold sits between thin sheets of paper which have been dusted with Armenian bole (red earth pigment that prevents sticking). This could theoretically hinder the gold sticking to the mordant. In my experience this is not the case. I have had problems with silver leaf (see my other video). Have a look at the Smith Tip on TH-cam. It looks very effective.
My old teacher always told us it was a bit of oil also and if there was a situation in which you had trouble picking up the gold he had us smear the smallest bit of petroleum jelly (vaseline in Ireland) across our chin and ever so lightly brush the gilders tip across it and you could then pick up the gold much better.
Elena, I buy the gelatin capsules in a pharmacy, they are about the size of a headache tablet! I will take a picture of one against a regular tablet and pm you through TH-cam.
Thanks for this informative demo. About 45 years ago I learned to gild, and remember that the paint with which the gold was backed couldn't be oil-based; it was either Japan color or Lampblack, not sure. Can you tell me what you're using? Thank you .
Hi... its oil based alright... I always thought Japan colour was oil based also !! I am using standard oil based paint here that we would use on timber or metal...
The software was Gerber - the reversing of the writing was very straightforward. There is an icon on the interface for switching once you have it as you require.

Hair is not actually required! What you can do is smear a tiny amount of petroleum jelly (vaseline) onto your cheek and very lightly run the brush over it and then lift the gold. Some gilders would do this also anyway. It is very important that the amount you use is very small. It is spread on the cheek so you do not contaminate anywhere with it and inadvertently smudge the gold.
Depends on the size of the job. The gold is about 25 euro for a book of about 20 leaves. I used a book and a half for this. The size and the paint is inexpensive and it does take a little time to get used to it and not waste the gold.

That helps a lot! We've tought that it's acrylic paint! One more question - is it necessary to etch the surface or it just easier way? Problem is that we can't find etching creme anywhere around!
Skew it off with cotton wool after you have backed up the letters. There will always be the tiniest outline of gold left that will be visible up close but there is no way to avoid this.

Good morning Dominic, I cannot remember the brand but I can check it in a few days and get back here. I did clean the glass again very carefully - the size will crawl all over the centres if you dont. Cotton wool and methylated spirits and some Whiting is what I used.
I have used Alkyd Gloss - pretty standard stuff I know and not ideal in a real life situation but as you say it is difficult to get decent signwriters enamel!!
Nice gilding job. I get using a computer. We all have. I think computers are okay as long as the end result does not look computer cut. Nothing like old school. Sadly, there is just not enough people doing it anymore. Damn computers!! lol.
Lets hope not. Many years ago neon was all but dead. Then, towards the late 80's it started coming back. My hope is that the demand for this true craft will come back someday. There is still some call for it. But nothing like it was when I started hand lettering in the mid 80's.
It is signmask that has been cut on a computer - lazy I know but handy! You apply the signmask with application tape and a squeegy and remove the application tape to leave the signmask in place.

Great video. You mention using yellow gloss to hide any imperfections in the gild. Is this paint any particular type or just sign writer paint such as 1 stop?
+robert selsor Hi Robert, yes the leaf generally goes over the outline and is then removed. However, if you get really good at cutting your pieces of gold (as my mentor was) then you can overlap the outline by a small amount and if the outline is thick enough the gold may not go out past it. If you have gone through the full process of cleaning the glass fully then there should be no wrinkles as the gold will stretch itself taut on the mordant. If you see wrinkles then the most likely cause is the glass being dirty or the mordant being dirty. To check the glass is clean you should see the mordant streaming down the glass like a waterfall with nothing stopping it along the way. To ensure the mordant mix is clean, use a microwave and a jar that is only for your mordant. If it has been used in anything else clean it in the same manner you would clean the glass. Remember to throw out any mordant after your session - do not attempt to re-use it. Hope that helps!

Dear Eric, I found the video very informative and it cleared certain doubts that I had regarding gold gilding but I want to know these are gold leafs that are being used in the above video. Is there any other gold gilding techniques like the statue outside the Buckingham Palace. .I mean for external use...is it the same technique or something different. ..kindly reply.
+inderjit mann Hi there, yes the technique is very different for exterior gilding - it is called transfer gilding and uses a mordant (as above but usually something like Japan Gold Size) and the gold leaf is rubbed across the almost dry surface to transfer the leaf.
Great video! If you are not doing a painted outline around your letters then can you leave the mask on until you have finished gilding? Will some of the gold peel off the glass at the edge of the letters when you remove the mask if you do it this way?

Hi Dan, if there is an embossed effect in the centres it was accidental!! In fact, those centres should have been removed but I was too lazy at the time!! I can only attribute that look to the quality of the camera I used which was not the best even in 2010 when I filmed it! If you are looking for more information on that type of technique I would highly recommend the book 'Gold Leaf Techniques' by Kent H. Smith which was updated from the original by Raymond LeBlanc. You will get it online for sure as I recently got a copy (having lost my original!)

The gold is adhering to the mordant which I am spraying onto the surface and it is then running down the surface - @2.50 I talk about it... the gelatin capsule dissolved in water is basically sticking the gold.
Do you take requests? I have been trying to figure out how to get the engine turn effect with gold leaf and haven't been able to figure it out completely on my own. I had been using quick dry size but just recently ordered some that dries in 18 hours to see if that makes the difference. But of course it hasn't came in the mail yet. Thanks for any help!

Hi Simon, the mordant is distilled water and a gelatine capsule - standard stuff usually bought from a pharmacy. we normally get our gold and tools from a shop called MRCB Paints which is in Cornmarket Street, Dublin city centre.
Ah ok, so completely different to a size you might use on a 3D letter say? Does that type of mordant stand up well to the elements? Internal external etc? I know MRCB well, I remember seeing a cabinet of tools there recently now that you mention it. Thanks for the reply!
Simon, the mordant used in this video on gold leaf gilding would not need to be used externally as the gold is put on the inside of the glass. When used properly on a loose leaf gilding job it is perfect - this is provided the complete job is finished appropriately and the gold is backed up etc. It is a completely different mordant used for transfer gold on an external surface - many choices here such as standard solvent based yellow gloss (not great) or japan gold size (better).

No that would not be a good idea, the mask has to be lifted fairly quickly while the black paint outline is still wet. If this is not done the signmask will bond with the paint and when you try to lift it you will get it peeling the edges of the paint leaving a poor line.

Wildansyah Syahid Hi there, thanks for your question. The gelatin capsule mixed with water is the mordant (glue) that holds the leaf to the glass. There is no other substitute (as far as I know!) for gelatin when doing reverse gold gilding. There are other mordant's for transfer leaf such as Japan gold size and old oil gold size.
Tiny, tiny, tiniest amount of grease on the guilding tip if you're really having trouble generating static to pick it up. Cut your gold into strips. Don't grab the whole sheet. Like the guy in this video does it-> Water Gilding C&J Frame # A047 Part 1
Andrew Ortiz I do not but it is something I may attempt in the future. I used a Gerber system of software and plotter to draw and cut those letters from standard signmask.

In Dublin there are some shops/sign makers where you can get vinyls made up and apply them yourself.

There is no other substitute (as far as I know!) for gelatin when doing reverse gold gilding. There are other mordant's for transfer leaf such as Japan gold size and old oil gold size.

Tiny, tiny, tiniest amount of grease on the guilding tip if you're really having trouble generating static to pick it up. Cut your gold into strips. Don't grab the whole sheet. Like the guy in this video does it-> Water Gilding C&J Frame # A047 Part 1

Andrew Ortiz I do not but it is something I may attempt in the future. I used a Gerber system of software and plotter to draw and cut those letters from standard signmask.
Can you leave the mask on and guild the inside of the letter through the mask area and then paint over the back then remove the mask? \

+inderjit mann the best surfaces are hard surfaces such as timber, it can be done on plaster features on elaborate cornices and such also.
