    This was a joy to watch. The camera guy asked enough questions that we didn't miss anything, but didn't get irritating to listen to. Hats off to the craftsman as well. Working with a camera on you isn't everyones cup of tea.

    Being a San Francisco native, I can't believe I've never see, heard about, or even noticed any leaf accented houses before. I'm even familiar with this neighborhood. Btw, I LOVE IT! 💖 I'll be on the lookout now.

    The stuff one can buy at Walmart is actually METAL leaf - which is FAKE gold, and the same goes for the liquid gold or gold paint. REAL 24kt or 23.75 kt is going for around 70-80 bucks per book for loose leaf, a bit more for patent leaf, which the gilder is using. If you use metal leaf, even if it is coloured, it has to be finished w/a protective layer of finish or it will tarnish. There is a gilder's society for anyone interested in developing knowledge and skill.

    Holy moly. Gold leaf on the exterior of a building? Someone's got deep pockets. How does it hold up in SF's foggy moisture? No matter, this just seems like an extravagant display of wealth, but nice look though. Especially on this scale of egg/dart moldings. I can't even imagine what it would cost for them at today's prices. Thanks. Just browsing gold leaf videos to see various techniques.

      +Martin Walters It's labor intensive so that is where most of your expense would come in. You could do this fairly cheaply if you did it yourself and purchased the leafing in bulk. Just paying regular prices-You could buy a pack, which covers 31 sqft of the REAL 24k GOLD for $500 or less. Now- if you shop around or buy in bulk you could save a ton of money off that. You can also go down in how many karats of gold and that would reduce the price far far more. 18k would save ya at least a hundred and $200 less for 12k. Also..you could do white gold, silver or even copper. The gilding is under $20 for 8oz. on Ebay but of course you could shop around and get better deals for sure. 31sqft is a lot when you are only doing small trim areas. Especially when you think about it being real 24k gold on the facade of a home. It costs more to mulch a yard.

      Hey, thanks for the info. I've only recently become interested in gilding, but only on small items I craft. But I appreciate your reply. Thanks again.

      Martin Walters That's awesome! I use it in decorating and on paintings or art installations to enhance a shine or reflection or of course, illumination. I also revive old decor like candelabras, vases etc. There are many ways to use it on your glassware or serving dishes too. If you use it in small amounts, like you said, it really makes a home shine, literally. When it is used all around the home, say just a bit here or there but consistently throughout, it is not gaudy and your guests won't even realize why your home seems so elegant with no mega blast of gold in their face. Though doing a small feature wall is stunning. The best way to use it is just as you are and you will find endless ways to sneak it in. Absolutely beautiful. If you ever decide to do your home, you know you are going to have to share it with us, lol. I hope you really have a lot of fun with it and good Luck to you.

    It's a traditional finish on Victorian houses. It's actually worth it when talking about home values and such. Gold leaf is expensive, but not prohibitively. A small book of 20 leaves costs $10-20 (last time I looked) so it's not like it's an outrageous thing only for the wealthy or something.

    Can any one tell me, How does the Gold Leaf sticks to the concrete? Is there an Adhesive to stick Gold Leaf.

    • @muzzerfuzzer2468
      @muzzerfuzzer2468 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When gilding the surface must be nonporous. Therefore you must seal the concrete. I suggest a urethane or epoxy. After sealing and smoothing, you can easily gild concrete using an appropriate gilding adhesive.

    Ginger that is absolutely false. There is no such thing as a paint that will look anywhere near as good as leaf. "Gold paint" is made of brass and will tarnish. If you use that on the exterior of a house it will turn dark brown or green and look horrible. There is NO substitute for gold leaf outdoors.
