  • Alpha 1 Gen 2 outdrive exhaust bellows replacement. I'm no pro so I struggled with this and finally got it right! I used the boat many times with no issues after the repair. I have some good tips in this vid and I hope it helps you (or maybe it will help me remember if I ever have to do this again?!)

I used this boat all summer. Towing kids on tubes and skiers all over the place. That's a lot of turning and trimming. No issues! Works perfectly...

Thanks for the video. I have one of the Milwaukee headlights. On high the battery craps out after about ten minutes from full charge.
    Good light otherwise.

Thanks for the video. It was really good. Just out of curiosity,Did you read the service manual or you just watched videos? I will have to do same procedure on my boat. the rubber on the bellows are showing signs of wear and clamps are very corroded

I don't have a shop manual. I watched most of the vids I could find and read some forum threads and sort of stirred it all together into what I thought was the best way to do it. FYI this repair has help up fantastic no issues.

A bad exhaust bellow in a gen 1 or 2 will not allow water in the boat. The exhaust bellow carries engine exhaust and cooling water from the transom to the out drive to lake water. A bad u-joint bellow or a bad shift cable bellow will allow lake water into the boat.

Yes - thank you. I was incorrect in saying that in this video.

Thanks for the tips. Does that other part of the lower unit not come off? It seems if it does then you might not need the bellows tool?

Yea, I think you can take it all apart but then you've got to do alignment with yet another tool and messing with the gimble bearing bellows.. I've not tore one down that far so I don't know for sure.

There are a lot of videos to change the bellows without removing the outdrive..

Been there tried it. It's much harder (in my opinion). It's much easier to do it correctly with drive off. Only takes fifteen minutes extra.

Do you have to have the bellows connected?

Do you mean can you run without the exhaust bellows or torn bellows? If so, I'm not sure. I repaired mine right after it tore.

You can run it. It’s louder as the exhaust isn’t running through the foot, it will soot up the back of your transom. PITA.

just buy the high performance exhaust bellows and you can ignore all this.

Good tip! I'll have to check it out. Who sells them?

      @@paulhaines5755 mercury.
it's a single sided set of bellows. hooks up the transom only.
when fully trimmed down, the drive end tucks into it, still sending most of the exhaust through the drive. while letting some leak out, reducing backpressure and making it "high performance".
no special tools needed to install. just completely remove the old on and do one hose clamp on the easily accessed transom side with drive fully trimmed up. all done.
note, i am a marine technician. been at it since 2004. i always recommend the HP bellows to all my customers simply because it's so much easier. and i can install them for far less labor too.
