    Sorry for the quick unscripted video. I just wanted to get this out quick so anybody who was wondering about this could see it.
    You will need some sort of USB to DisplayPort/HDMI that can use displaylink software to run the 2nd monitor

    I posted a new video after I adjusted my setup. I’m using only one port now to drive the two monitors, my peripherals, and get power. th-cam.com/video/lqINozYxDK8/w-d-xo.html

    Can you run external displays while in clamshell mode?

    Do you notice any mouse lag? I can't seem to fix that. Issue only persists with displaylink. When I run just the one external display natively i have no issues.

    Could it be possible to have 2 external monitors from a regular hub and an the 2nd one from Thunderbolt to HDMI cable?

    Not with full metal osx support And acceleration.
    Also check the hz refresh rate.
    Not to mention the added cost to add on to the purchase price of the computer which should have had 2 monitor support natively with all of the GPU power.

    Got an M1 MacBook Air 16GB RAM/512GB Storage/8-core GPU running Big Sur 11.1
    Using it as a left screen on a mount to allow air to base and sitting on a Baseus Type-C hub just connecting to one of the MacBook’s ports. Power into the hub from the Apple supplied cable. Cat 5E 1Gbs LAN cable to home switch. Audio out. One USB 3.0 out of the hub to the first external monitor and daisy-chained to second. The expansion of USB ports allows for connection of keyboard, mouse, HD webcam/mic and USB memory stick connecting into the monitor USB ports.
    HDMI out to 1920x1200 monitor. USB-C out to Kensington display port and onto second external 1920x1200 monitor.
    Gives an excellent 3-screen arrangement with one USB 3.0 post left free on the hub and one USB-C port on the MacBook un-used.
    👍🏻

    Have you tried this with two 2160p monitors? I thought that was the limitation. Full Hd should work fine as long as you use two separate TB3 ports.

    • @ryan3.082
      @ryan3.082  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah my monitors are both 2160. 2 Full HD monitors will not work by using two separate thunderbolt ports. The M1 macbook is limited to only driving one external monitor via thunderbolt. It does not matter if you try to plug two separate monitors in the two separate ports

    Can you not use a dock, install the displaylink drivers, and send a monitor through each USB-C port separately for two external displays? Thanks

    • @ryan3.082
      @ryan3.082  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Daniel, I tried this for you but it did not work. The displaylink software needs to recognize a displaylink dock in order to work. It has to convert the display signal to a usb signal for the MacBook to recognize it.

    I looking to connect two Samsung 49" Curved QLED Gaming Monitor (5,120 x 1,440) 60Hz @ full resolution to the new Mac mini using only one thunderbolt port. Do you think that there is a workaround for that? If not, can I connect each monitor on each Thunderbolt port instead using the HDMI? Thanks.

    • @ryan3.082
      @ryan3.082  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Hena, you’d have to look for a displaylink hub that supports 5k for that second monitor. No, you cannot connect each monitor to each thunderbolt port. The M1 only supports 1 monitor by itself. That second monitor only runs with a displaylink device

    • @ryan3.082

      I’m actually not sure. It seems that thunderbolt 3 docks do not use displaylink. Check with the company that made your dock and see if they use displaylink drivers.

    • @ryan3.082

      Yes it works really smoothly with two 2k monitors. My monitors are 2560 x 1440 each and it's running really well. I can open as many google web pages as I want. I think the M1 processor is making up for any lag with the displaylink hardware.

    • @ryan3.082
      @ryan3.082  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey sorry but I don't think the stone pro dock uses displaylink software. It can do two monitors if the mac itself can natively support 2 monitors (which the intel based ones do). The M1 macbooks only support 1 monitor natively.

    Could've went in to detail depth and explained alot better... i.e. the download from displaylink is the displaylink driver that u have to install on your mac... then u can run 1 monitor hdmi connect straight to the Plugable docking station... u will need a conversion adapter for the 2nd monitor that with either a display port connection adapter or a USB connection adaptor and run that to your plugable as well... u will need that thunderbolt 3 cable to run to your Mac... install and active the driver before u connect the thunderbolt 3 cable to your mac... once installed and activated plug it in and go to your settings for your monitor display... make sure u click off the mirror mode. There maybe a couple more steps if it doesn't take off right away... but its simple if explained correctly and not as broad of an explanation as this... have have this set up as well with the same docking station to my MacBook Air with Big Sur 11. Something...

    can the early 2020 pro intel chip run 2 external screens?

  • @bradleybiederer8796
    @bradleybiederer8796 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    So in theory, if I have a displaylink dock connected via USB C, that has two HDMI/DP out, I can run my two external displays off of just the displaylink dock. Leaving the other USB C port for power?

    • @ryan3.082
      @ryan3.082  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes that will work! I actually redid my setup. I have a cheap USB C hub with a HDMI out that connects to one monitor, and power going into that hub. Then one of the usb 3.0 ports go to my displaylink dock and that powers the 2nd monitor. So in just one connection, I have power and two monitors coming out of the Macbook pro. My 2nd thunderbolt is free. I'll upload a new video showing that

      @cwyang80 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ryan3.082 so you know if both run smooth? I read that DisplayLink monitors via M1 might not work that smooth. But looking at benchmark results, the M1 should easily handle DisplayLink on QHD as what you are using. Great video though!

    • @ryan3.082
      @ryan3.082  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@cwyang80 my thought exactly. I used to use this setup with a surface pro 6 and I could tell the slightest bit of lag, but once I was working, it was not noticeable.
      I honestly could not tell if there was any lag with the M1 through displaylink. Given that the M1 is such a strong processor (much faster than my surface i5), I think it’s essentially making up for any lag that could be felt with displaylink.
