    I really love this idea as someone who has started "everyday cardio" a hundred times (I can't be the only one), the only thing that I thought would annoy me would be having to hold the January 1st button down for 45 seconds to reset. But I thought about it for a bit and realized if I were to go through it for a whole year and use those 45 seconds as a chance to reflect on the past year and how well I did those 45 seconds might actually feel really rewarding. I at least think that is what she was trying to do with the extended amount of time, because it would have just as easily to make it 5 seconds to hold it for a reset.

      and how many kids would ruin your calendar by pressing for 5 seconds. But none have 45 seconds of patience :-D

    • @Redmanticore
      @Redmanticore 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      i mean the 45 sec is just about thinking, reflecting, yes, but not really about waiting for "feeling really rewarding", I don't think. not everything is about dopamine dragon feel chasing and rewards like endless video game. part of learning in meditation is to learn off that mentality. just about living the moment. you are already there. not a thing to be waiting for a year, like birthdays can be "toxic" concept a bit to unlearn, idea of waiting a year or certain day to try to feel happy, or that waiting feels of spiking or everlasting dopamine and happiness is anykind of real goal. they can be destructive ideas to exploit, of which cults, extremists, advertisement use eagerly. "you don't feel happy all the time, you must do x, only then you can.."
      frankly, i mean, this whole board thing.. of doing meditation with a goal like mentality like this.. and keeping scores.. is a bit, ironically, antithesis to the idea of meditation itself, and not really _getting the point_ .. its a bit americanized material version of meditation: "has to do a material thing that then progresses to a goal." at least in the end it all wipes it out, leaving nothing, which is nice. but to feel stressed to press the button is something a stressful person, who meditates, would design to torment herself. it would mentally feel obligated work, the opposite point of meditation, really.

      @@Redmanticore I think you make a good point. I know for me personally I have a very hard time developing routines and often use externalities like this to help. If I successfully meditated everyday for a year, I might not need such a tool to remember. :) But as someone still working on the habits I want in my day to day, something like this is a good reminder to take a few minutes to meditate (or perhaps another activity I’m trying to build into a daily routine).

    • @Sembazuru
      @Sembazuru 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I remember when this was first being announced over on Simone's channel, there were a bunch of people griping about the cost. I did a quick check of just buying PCB panels the size of those and found her price is pretty fair. Yeah, PCBs are cheap now-a-days, but that is relative to how expensive they used to be. (I remember at a place I used to work at, every time we respun a new board we were charged a NRE (specifically artwork) fee of $200 per artwork layer. Recognize that a simple 2-layer board actually has at least 7 artwork layers (2 copper layers, 2 solder mask layers, 1 silkscreen layer, one plated hole layer, and one non-plated hole and board edge layer). That's $1400 just to get the board house ready to make a 2-layer board, you don't have anything yet, and you only have silkscreen on one side of the board. Today I can get (not the cheapest) boards made for 5$/square inch with 2 silkscreen layers, and that gets me 3 copies of the board. For the same amount that would be 280 square inches (not that any board panels are that large) and I would have 3 physical boards (instead of artwork plots). Oh, and that was only back in the mid '90s. It hasn't been that long...

      I recognize myself in this picture. I have a 9 year old car industry oriented blog which is quite popular here in Norway. It is written approx. 12000 posts in the blog and I usually write 2-3 new posts every day. Then came the corona crisis and I felt completely exhausted due to the lockdown situation. The urge to write relatively advanced technical posts in the blog gradually disappeared until I discovered that I could no longer write new posts. I made a decision with myself and decided that if there was one thing I needed to do, it was to stay mentally active outside of work. I'm not as lucky as Adam that my work (as an IT system developer) is also my hobby, but of course there are several relationships between my work and hobby (the blog). Being mentally stable is very important and I have no doubt that also meditating helps in this context. Unfortunately, I have no practical experience other than noticing myself and any changes in my mind (certainly not a good method if common sense really should fail).

      I'm guilty of that, let me explain a bit:
      1. I'm lazy, that should be enough already.
      2. I want my things to stay protected. The protective film does that.
      3. Removing it is even more satisfying once the film is all marred. It's like getting it brand new all over again.
      4. There's a risk I might damage something when removing the film. Sometimes it's unclear if a layer is supposed to come off or not.
      4. I'm lazy. I didn't even renumber this point when I added one above it.
      I should say though, if the film gets in the way I will remove it. I'm not _that_ crazy.

      Visual impact is subjective, much the same as art of any kind.
      I've never heard of the creator (that's on me, not them) but I imagine that they poured hours, days, weeks, months, maybe even years into every aspect of this design. They may consider it a thing of beauty and purpose. Those who buy it will do so because they will feel the same.
      We earn money and spend money. Some may buy a piece of paper, a ruler and a pencil and draw out a set of blocks, 12 by 31, stick it to the wall with blu tack or a drawing pin, right next to their favourite print of the Grand Canyon. Others might buy this.
      I think you will find that almost everything you can and do buy is born of a materialistic society. Whether that be a tool, a calendar, a can of soda or a plastic bucket.
