Young me couldn't even line up Stickers on LEGO, and here is Adam lining up huge Stickers like this. Fortunately now I know that Stickers on LEGOs are the worst anyway. :D
For a tabletop RPG you'd normally use 1:60 scale for the shipping container, so it would be 8" long. At that scale, you might make the corrugated side texture by peeling off one sheet of paper from a piece of cardboard to expose the ridges inside, inserting wooden skewers to reinforce the inner gaps with white glue. But that would be way too rough, since the scale texture of the ridges would be about 1/32" deep, but you'd do it so the miniature reads better on the table. You could definitely just have a flat surface with an impression of a texture from painting or a sticker.
21:02 that gave me massive amounts of nostalgia from when i was apprenticing as a carpenter. The mumbling of numbers followed by the smile was something i always saw in my teacher. That's the mark of a builder who's truly enjoying the project
There are 3 ways to do things, the right way (Jamie) the fast way (give the job to Tori) or the Savage way. The Savage way is just what it says in the dictionary, 'fierce, violent, and uncontrolled.' Adam couldn't have a more apt surname.
The quality on those stickers is so good I genuinely thought from the video thumbnail that you'd built an actual mini corrugated metal container. This was so cool!
“I’m going to cap one end making it 48 3/4.” *Proceeds to make it exactly 48”* I love that you’re never afraid to show your mistakes Adam. I’m a carpenter and still make mistakes like that all the time. Just gotta roll with it.
@@MrSupahlovah : lol... yep, me too. Agree with zackerylunde though, stuff happens and mistakes are learning. I was also immediately "Oh, 48 and 3/4 out of 3/4 ply, naturally he'll just make a 3/8 rabbet on each end and be done and super solid." followed by "OK, open ended and capped one end works too..." until that first test clamp up, oh oh, 3/4 short. I do like the usefulness achieved of open ended storage though, so full marks there, even if I'd have made the top a lid instead (bit more work).
I hear you lol It's easy to watch a video and yell at it "no no no no no" when in reality I have to measure 3 times and write it down, then measure again to make sure I wrote it right...
My dad was a hobbiest wood worker. Watching that glue running down the inside of that box would have made him go nuts. Even something as simple as a storage box ment days of careful planning, cutting, sanding and screwing. He was great at what he did. I told him once he was not building pianos and he said it doesnt matter, it might as well be. If you cannot take pride everything you do, then you shouldn't be doing it. He lived in a different time where nothing was thrown away and whatever you made reflected on you. His craftsmanship still stands out even though he is gone now. Many of the wooden boxes he made are still around or were bought during a clean out and marvled the man that made them. Many have been reperposed and will be used long after I am gone.
Adam, some advice on vinyl application from someone whose family has been doing it here in Toronto for over a decade: You can apply some masking tape to the beginning of your vinyl and tape it down after you line everything up (if it's rolled, make sure it's as straight as possible so it doesn't creep). Then you can flip the sheet so the backing is facing up, peel it off, and then stick it down. This method is better because then you don't have vinyl trying to stick itself down all the time, there's a lot more control. Also you can purchase a pick tool (literally just a sharp pointy end with an exacto blade handle) it's great to separate the vinyl from its backing. Hope this helps!
After all that talk about model making and seeing the thumbnail, I was really looking forward to watching how we made it so realistic and rusty. Still cool though.
I work with vinyl decals. That looks like 3M IJ40 with controltac, that is air egress material, meaning there's little micro channels in the adhesive for air to escape. So no air bubbles! Very cool technology. Curious to see how it will hold up on wood, it's a removable adhesive.
@@trentjensen96 I've seen a guy 3d print a die for an oil cap and stamp it with a car jack . If you need to corrugate a GI sheet it should be simple enough.
@@Lastburn And now I'm wondering if anyone's done that and is selling them as benches because I want a small metal shipping container in my house as a bench.
Great to see you're well Adam. Lovely to hear an American use metric tape measure inciments. You can also use a spray bottle with water and dish soap to float the vinyl wrap onto the surface and slide it into position then squeegee out the air and water mix
That apron is still so cool, even after watching Adam make it... Now I want a custom made one too... 😁 Also, I wish Adam had put little mini doors on the shipping container.
Adam, please please PLEASE use the riving knife in your saw. As a cabinetmaker and furniture designer I can tell you it's the single most important piece that no one talks about on a saw. Using it will save your fingers and keep any pieces from kicking back at you. Also, it's safer and better for the saw blade if the blade is raised a 1/2 to 3/4" above the material for the same reason, it's much harder for the blade to grab and send it back to you. It also reduces the wear on the blade as it's travelling through less material to make the cut. I love love these one day builds, but please be safe!
Also, a more correct usage of the term than what is often the case, seeing as it originated from a song about someone with an unhealthy obsession with a musical artist.
I really appreciate how you have decided to continue to put content out during quarantine while also following the quarantine recommendations. I'm sure that has been a bit harder than the way it was done before. You guys are doing great things!
Curiosityness I’m gob smacked. And not very photogenic. I’d like to discuss it further. But I did follow in his foot steps as a truck driver. I’m told he was upset with waiting at ports for freight to be off loaded and prepared to be trucked inland. This led to his tinkering and planning.
Adam: Builds amazing shipping container bench with lots of prepping and attention to detail. Also Adam: Keeps throwing thing on shelf and having it fall down so he doesn't have to climb the ladder 😂 This resonates with me lol Super cool build, love the MB nostalgia
Adam!! I was dying when you were trying to make the 48 3/4 length work out!!! that obviously is 48 inch sides with the 3/4 ends with a 3/8 rabbit on the edges!! thats how you would joint them!! sorry, I'm still stuck at 3:36... continuing now...You are the Man!! I'm sure you worked it out!
Adam Savage is so relentlessly entertaining. I was using these videos mostly as something to watch before bed since it's so peaceful, but I've begun to be fascinated by it all.
That's what I thought he was going to do until he said he was leaving one end open. ThenI watched him build it. Then when he reacted like he made a mistake I thought he'd realized that he had stapled it together wrong.
Mihai Anton he’s doing what makes him happy and providing us content while he’s at it. If he wants to build a wooden shipping container, he can. If he wants to build a sword, he can. Just because he built a wooden shipping container today doesn’t mean he’s done making other “cool” stuff.
Adam, love your channel! My father, a carpenter, always taught me, when cutting wood, on the table saw, raise the sawblade to one tooth above the material. You where cutting it close ;) One love.
I think this is kewl as hell. I dunno why I love this aesthetic but I do. They are even making these containers into pools nowadays. I would love to make something like this a toy box or something for kids or a storage bench.
It’s so cool watching this dude as a young kid growing up then randomly seeing him pop up in popularity again on TH-cam which I feel like now days especially is as big if not bigger than cable tv now days
That's exactly what I was thinking. I guess I don't have the right mindset to be all gaga over some decals the way everyone else in the comment section is.
Right? When I saw the thumbnail I was like "Oh I wonder how he's going to bend the metal like that... and make the end closure lock bars.. and age/weather it perfectly to look all rusty on the corners like that." The stickers are pretty realistic tho.
I totally understand the allure of shipping containers the big industrial aesthetic i stay 30 minutes away from a shipping port that’s been in service since 1967 and still in operation today bringing in trade from all over the world
They likely have a 'sound gate' on which means it only records/plays audio after a certain loudness threshold (i.e. when Adam Speaks). The actual source of the vibration is likely just some fan or something in the workshop.
That thing looks so real from far away! :D I'm not an artsy-craftsy, all-patient kind of guy, but man...if that project didn't didn't stir up a desire in me. It came out beautiful, and that's weird, because shipping containers are not exactly beautiful!
This was fun for me personally. Mainly because I do plan on building my future home out of containers. Been dreaming about this for years. Here in the States you just don't see them. And I'm willing to take the pros way over the cons because it's all worth it to me. This bench would be something great in the garage or wherever else. Because I'm now thinking do this project with photos of the actual house. Great stuff!!!
I'm shocked some people thought you could build a 1/8 scale metal shipping container in one day. Very cool bench my man. I also enjoyed seeing the down side to having worked on so many advanced projects. That extra 3/4 of an inch really messed with your head. Even when I thought you had it figured out, you didn't. Sweet bench!
That apron you made looks really comfortable. I've never been able to make clothing but I can't tell you how much I appreciate clothing that fits properly.
The last thing I expected Adam to say when he said "I bet you're wondering what I'm listening to..." was "Billie Eyelash".. threw me of guard, but thats so rad at the same time.
Little tip on decals. Use a little dishwashing soap and water foam. That way the stickers won’t stick right away and you can easily squeegee the bubbles out. Start from the middle and work outwards. Use a little soap on to too to help the squeegee slide so you don’t scratch the print.
Total side bar but as an Australian I hear: Metric: 1,10,100 everything is simple ....a 55 mm cut etc. Imperial: 54 and eleventy sixteenth quantums....gibberish.
Nah it's super simple. You just devide it by 8, multiply it by 2.57 and then divide it by 13. At that point you measure how large the moon is in the sky, multiply that by the size of your foot and add that to the other value and you are all done. Simple!
I used to have a 1993 Pontiac Sunbird that was put together with a seemingly-random mixture of metric and imperial nuts and bolts. I had to buy an extra socket set just to change its brake pads; the brake calipers were bolted on with metric bolts, but the brake hose clamps were bolted on with imperial bolts, and the last thing I wanted to do was round off the corners of rusty brake bolts with wrong-sized sockets. As a rational American (yes, we do exist), I wish we'd hurry up and ditch Ye Olde units based on the size of long-dead monarchs' body parts.
I used to work in a vinyl shop, and one of the tricks I was shown, for applying vinyl, is to use a bit of dish soap in a spritz bottle. its helps with being able to adjust your work
Mike K I think it's a gate they have on the mic. Cuts out the background noise when he's not talking but when it opens the background noise comes through. They should just leave the gate off, a little shop noise never hurt anyone. And it's better than the pulsing of the gate opening and closing.
LOL I thought the fan in my bathroom was doing something crazy while watching on my phone. The second I turn it off, it's gone. I totally tried turning the fan off and knocking on it first 😅
Please make a mini container chassis to put it on instead of the casters. You could still move it easily then and it would look amazing. Also I need the plans.
One of the reasons I liked this is that it was something I could use and it was something I could make using the limited tools I have available which consists of a circular saw, drill, brad nailer, and sander.
There is some audio issue, a pretty strong ringing at 360 Hz, you might want to check what's up with the audio. Other than that, great work and entertainment, as always!
i wont lie, when i first saw the title i thought he would be making a real tiny container with working doors and weathering it himself, but this was still very enjoyable thank you adam c:
Followed by wondering what material he used for the siding. My mind was thinking tin roofing sheet metal, but the spacing wouldn't be right.. some kind of corrugated steel? But no... Stickers :(
Yup, I clicked on the video to possibly see some cool metal working and got disappointed when he pulled out the stickers. Cool and realistic stickers tho, but my expetations were way higher.
If you have to roll up posters and stickers or any artwork, put a spacing sheet (tissue or vellum scrap, etc.) on top and roll to the artwork on the outside of the roll. It’s so much easier to lay an outside rolled item out flat.

But that would be way too rough, since the scale texture of the ridges would be about 1/32" deep, but you'd do it so the miniature reads better on the table. You could definitely just have a flat surface with an impression of a texture from painting or a sticker.
3:57 - Has a tool for every job but refuses to use the ladder for this simple task. 🤣
A ladder which is so nearby to where he is trying to place things, it's literally already setup in the correct position.
Came to make same observation comment haha!!

@@spacetree5808 Especially Adam. And that's why I like him so much :D
Yes same thought. It’s already set up. Just use it. Jeez.
21:02 that gave me massive amounts of nostalgia from when i was apprenticing as a carpenter. The mumbling of numbers followed by the smile was something i always saw in my teacher. That's the mark of a builder who's truly enjoying the project
3:55 literally a lader right there. Throws the thing. This is why Adam is my spirit animal
Then proceeds to stand on the table saw (which is right next to the ladder) to put the other thing back
I died laughing
There are 3 ways to do things, the right way (Jamie) the fast way (give the job to Tori) or the Savage way. The Savage way is just what it says in the dictionary, 'fierce, violent, and uncontrolled.' Adam couldn't have a more apt surname.
totally agree with this and its replies, but also love the overall tool workers shorts over the jeans
@@KnowledgePerformance7 No, you didn't
You need to make a set of these now and stack them.
In different colours if possible.
The quality on those stickers is so good I genuinely thought from the video thumbnail that you'd built an actual mini corrugated metal container. This was so cool!
“I’m going to cap one end making it 48 3/4.”
*Proceeds to make it exactly 48”*
I love that you’re never afraid to show your mistakes Adam. I’m a carpenter and still make mistakes like that all the time. Just gotta roll with it.
When he clamped the cap inside, before he started gluing, I said "Oh noooooo!" to my monitor.
@@MrSupahlovah how did he do that pen trick? 1:43
I hear you lol
It's easy to watch a video and yell at it "no no no no no" when in reality I have to measure 3 times and write it down, then measure again to make sure I wrote it right...
@@Xktree72 Back to that classic of crossing off that sides you want cut, simple things but you can easily forget them.
The shipping crate looks so good in the thumbnail it literally looks like you shrunk a shipping container
@belly tripper A flux capacitor's great for time jumps, not size changes. Surely you meant the Szalinski shrinking machine.
Adam, some advice on vinyl application from someone whose family has been doing it here in Toronto for over a decade:
You can apply some masking tape to the beginning of your vinyl and tape it down after you line everything up (if it's rolled, make sure it's as straight as possible so it doesn't creep).
That is possibly the best pro tip I've ever accidentally come across. And so simple!
Do you also use the soapy water trick for things like decals on glass and smooth surfaces.
After all that talk about model making and seeing the thumbnail, I was really looking forward to watching how we made it so realistic and rusty. Still cool though.
Yeah, I was hoping for a nice weathered model. This is fun, but I like weathering...
Was thinking the same thing ... A bit deceived when a saw the decals hehe
I work with vinyl decals. That looks like 3M IJ40 with controltac, that is air egress material, meaning there's little micro channels in the adhesive for air to escape. So no air bubbles! Very cool technology. Curious to see how it will hold up on wood, it's a removable adhesive.
I'm surprised Adam didn't use the drawing for measurements and make a replica from steel or aluminum and ditch the stickers.
If you had a sheetmetal press you could build a die for it. That's be neat.
@@trentjensen96 I've seen a guy 3d print a die for an oil cap and stamp it with a car jack . If you need to corrugate a GI sheet it should be simple enough.

"Every movie in which someone says that.... they're about to be found out." Yep 😂
I noticed instantly too.
Adam is a great builder. But I often question is planning skills.
I saw that he used the extra 3/4” to cover the edge of the wood so I guess it worked out in the end lol
I appreciate how you are willing to show your mistakes, such as with the length of the graphic versus the box
The look on Adams face when he realized the end being inside instead of on the end of the box was priceless
I love how Adam can get so much joy from
Something as simple as some wood and stickers lol. It’s just so wholesome.
i mean i would be, storage containers are amaqzing, i plan to build a home with a few. im only 20 also..
Great to see you're well Adam. Lovely to hear an American use metric tape measure inciments.
You can also use a spray bottle with water and dish soap to float the vinyl wrap onto the surface and slide it into position then squeegee out the air and water mix
The thumbnail looks like it’s one of those weird perspective illusions, and it’s so trippy.
That apron is still so cool, even after watching Adam make it... Now I want a custom made one too... 😁
Also, I wish Adam had put little mini doors on the shipping container.
I feel like Adam is going to run up some canvas dungarees as some point as that is essentially what he's made.
Adam Savage: ".. Awesome, I Stan them" 14:06 .
Never thought I would hear the words stan be uttered from adams mouth
Also, a more correct usage of the term than what is often the case, seeing as it originated from a song about someone with an unhealthy obsession with a musical artist.
Wow. Never knew I wanted a mini shipping container until I saw how amazing they look when they are mini.
You can get 1:20 scale containers pretty easily, and they open up.
I really appreciate how you have decided to continue to put content out during quarantine while also following the quarantine recommendations. I'm sure that has been a bit harder than the way it was done before. You guys are doing great things!
My relative invented the International Shipping Container!!!!!

That’s incredible! Would you wanna be a guest on my podcast to share the story and talk about the invention and Malcolm??
Curiosityness
I’m gob smacked.
Also Adam: Keeps throwing thing on shelf and having it fall down so he doesn't have to climb the ladder 😂
This resonates with me lol Super cool build, love the MB nostalgia
I love just watching one of the greatest man to walk on this planet just having fun building random stuff, while entertaining
2 minutes of building, 23 minutes of Adam trying to put something on a shelf lol
With a ladder only feet away.
and it was yet cut, who knows how much time he really needed for that :D
I mean, it's our video, but we still laughed watching it. And then re-watching it. And then ... rewatching it again.
I love that he committed to throwing it up with the ladder beside him 😂. It is exactly what i would do 😂
Standing on the table to finish the job was the cherry on top. Also great use of the color bar cut. Had me rolling
Adam Savage is so relentlessly entertaining. I was using these videos mostly as something to watch before bed since it's so peaceful, but I've begun to be fascinated by it all.
2:56 - Or cap one end on the outside and the other on the inside. Voilá, exactly the correct length.
That's what I thought he was going to do until he said he was leaving one end open. ThenI watched him build it. Then when he reacted like he made a mistake I thought he'd realized that he had stapled it together wrong.
Edit it, he did notice it at the very end
I think the idea is that one end goes inside for strength and the other end goes on the outside so you can make doors.
@@jaecenwhite2590 I was also surprised he didn't make an internal frame for strength. At the very least 2 squares of 2x2 at each end
Coming from a background of “live steam railroading” I was expecting him to literally build a 1/8th scale container.
I was too and now im disappointed
He went from cool projects (building swords, machines, etc.) to applying stickers on wooden boxes... Disappointing!
Same here... 😏
Mihai Anton he’s doing what makes him happy and providing us content while he’s at it. If he wants to build a wooden shipping container, he can. If he wants to build a sword, he can. Just because he built a wooden shipping container today doesn’t mean he’s done making other “cool” stuff.

Same here. That build would really have been something to witness.
"Just a box with a sticker". Ok, let's see YOUR build.

"I'm always interested in some extra storage. " Such an Adam Savage quote
Why is the sound "vibrating" like someone is playing on a glass of water around 13:00 and forward
Gate on the mic
They likely have a 'sound gate' on which means it only records/plays audio after a certain loudness threshold (i.e. when Adam Speaks). The actual source of the vibration is likely just some fan or something in the workshop.
I have tinnitus and i thought it was fairing up until I paused the video. Its really unpleasant

Imagine using a miniature shopping container as a basking spot for a large reptile like an iguana. It'd look like Godzilla.

Looks like it would make for a great piece of furniture in a children's room.

Little tip on decals. Use a little dishwashing soap and water foam. That way the stickers won’t stick right away and you can easily squeegee the bubbles out. Start from the middle and work outwards. Use a little soap on to too to help the squeegee slide so you don’t scratch the print.
Total side bar but as an Australian I hear:
Metric: 1,10,100 everything is simple ....a 55 mm cut etc.
Imperial: 54 and eleventy sixteenth quantums....gibberish.
Agree, I'm in the U.S but use Metric it's so much easier.
All the metric snobs come out of the woodwork. We in the US can use both, the rest of the world refuses to see that.
@@KipdoesStuff A lot of commonwealth countries still use both metric and imperial units.
I laughed out loud at the blue plastic thing falling in Adam's head and the sudden test pattern cut 😂😂😂 awesome editing

Adam there's a tuning fork sound every time you talk might want to investigate that.
Mike K I think it's a gate they have on the mic. Cuts out the background noise when he's not talking but when it opens the background noise comes through. They should just leave the gate off, a little shop noise never hurt anyone. And it's better than the pulsing of the gate opening and closing.
It's very distracting

Please make a mini container chassis to put it on instead of the casters. You could still move it easily then and it would look amazing.

Well at that point you might as well drive it around with a to scale peterbuilt
True, you could just modify a cheap Harbor Freight dolly/hand truck into a mini chassis. That would be hilarious.
