For folks saying FG is better due to tag orientation, yes that is true. But I prefer this knot with a coating of UV resin. The resin makes it so the tags are not an issue and this is easier to tie on the fly because I don’t need to work with a bobbin. UV resin cures almost instantly when in the sun or under a small UV flashlight. While I’m rigging in preparation for the trip, FG is where I start but once I’m on the boat it’s all this.
RP is short for Royal Polaris a boat that John Collins is a deckhand for in the san diego long range scene. hence it is also called a John Collins knot. ten up ten back pull till near, BUT you are supposed to jerk it for the final tightening.( you cannot slow pull till the end, or it will not cinch right) the southern california tuna fishermen use this knot for tuna over 200 pounds.

Wow. I’ve been tying it wrong. I’ve been running the braid same direction thru the loop. It still seems to work but it does make more sense the correct way. Thanks 👍🏻
I've used this knot enough to know that I prefer the FG knot, main reason is the FG goes through the guides alot smoother. If connection knot is not going through the guides then what they call a RP knot is fine
alberto knot. also if you are using any of the 8 carrier braid esp the lighter lines use 10 wraps and finish the knot with 2 whip finishes and a dab of super glue.
This knot goes by multiple names. RP, Alberto (crazy), albright. It is most definitely the easiest and best knot for braid to leader. The key is after the knot is cinched down. Is to pop tighten multiple times all 4 tag ends together at 70-90% strength. that way the tag ends can be trimmed down to nothing to fly through the guides. Hands down best braid to leader connection ever.
I thought this was called the Alberto Knot? I have tested it against the FG Knot and there is no comparison. The FG always wins in a strength test and it also goes through the guides easier.
Mark Mcdonald you are dead right sir. The tag of the FG (both the leader and the main line) faces back towards the reel, so it never clashes with the guides. And it’s strong and slim. People just gotta learn to tie it!
With the FG was having a small issue with the braid tag end getting a little frayed after some use, making it a little rougher through the guides when reeling. A SMALL drop of super glue where the knot finishes solved that nicely.
Rp knot is faster and easier to tie on a moving boat vs the Fg and holds up plenty well. At least that is my experience. And yes I know that some people can tie a Fg in record time on a moving boat. RP knot is just plain easier and no extra tools required.

Don’t believe me search RP knot and watch where this knot came from. If It can handle 300 lb super cows on long range trips it can handle a bass lol do 5 wraps people no need to overdue this knot.

Just baffles me how these vids still use real line. Just get two different color braids or thin rope to actually show the knot. Not floro...😅

Wow just tried this out and it will be my new leader knot from now on. I get a nice really thin strong knot that flies thru my guides.

2 Questions: a) can you tab a bit of crazy glue to make it stronger? b) can I add a snap swivel to the end of my flouro to switch out lures quickly?
