    This is so helpful. I bought some vintage tunic patterns recently because I have such beautiful fabric and hate shopping where I can’t find anything I love that fits. I used to make all my clothes. Have you seen Kate at the Last Homely House on TH-cam make her denim coat with Sashiko stitching and a reversible lining? It seems we’ve all arrived at the same conclusion.

  • @annmeacham5643
    @annmeacham5643 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I always made a muslin trial garment from the tissue pieces to work out the necessary adjustments since one side of my body differs from the other. Then I’d cut that apart to create my pattern pieces. I find that easier than adjusting tissue ones, get a more true fit.

    I sewed theater costumes ages ago. Getting that shoulder seam on the end of your shoulder bone can take 10 yrs off of a figure. Also, get a bra on during fittings that support "the girls" properly. Also if you are losing weight .....your bust will reduce in Size and coat may not fit well.

    @pooie0116 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Is a muslin necessary to fit the pattern? Absolutely! You've made all those adjustments on that flimsy tissue paper, but you can't really wear it. A muslin is something you can wear for a while in and around the house while making normal movements like sitting and reaching and you'll know soon enough if it isn't as comfortable as you first thought or you find that you have limited range of motion. Better to discover any potential problems with a muslin than to do months of work making a gorgeous coat only to find out you can't sit in a car and raise your arms to move the steering wheel. 😉

    Lucky you had someone who knows how to adjust by video and talk you through it.
    Is the coat for less cold times because I noticed fitting was with just a tshirt on and the muslin draft garment fits well but doesn't seem to have room for further layers underneath.

    How fortunate to be able to get help fitting! I wouldn't have chosen those wide lapels for a large bust but all the mods to the pattern looks like it will be great! Have you started making your quilt fabric? I want to do this so I'm taking mental notes. I don't like fitted clothes because of my shape (inverted triangle, wide on top, narrow-ish on bottom). I like the boxy styles but they do tend to make me look bigger. I think once I figure out what I want to do as far as making the quilt, I'm going to do it in sections to fit the pattern pieces. I think...

    Great video - I also have a large bust and getting anything to fit is a challenge! However, I was intrigued by you saying you were going to use the muslin for a stitich and flip method of construction - if it is the backing, won't it shrink up when quilted and so be too small?

    A suggestion, rather than work with the delicate tissue, how about tracing the pattern on to Swedish tracing paper. It would add time to the process but give you a much more durable pattern.

    • @ConfidentStitch
      @ConfidentStitch 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a good idea, Diana, but the tissue actually works better. Swedish tracing paper is a little too stiff, and tape doesn't really stick to it.

    Good for you. Life change is a stinker. I now have a husband with dementia which makes quilting time sparse. I am proud of you for moving forward.

    This is so awesome. I have been working to fit my daughter for clothes and her bust is not accomadated by most patterns. I think I need that book.

    I was thrilled, watching this video! I am a full-busted, post-menopausal woman too, and completely appreciate "feeling like a blob" (great illustration!)
    I found the pattern adjustment demonstration fascinating and empowering. Kate is brilliant! So are you, Karen, to find that expertise, figure out a way to collaborate remotely, and show us all!
    The coat will be amazing - I wonder whether you will really want the lapels on the final coat, and if so, how you will do them, since they flip to show the inside.
    Thanks so much for this, ladies! Awesome job.

    Congratulations Karen on your health journey. You are so worth the effort it takes to care for yourself. You inspire me! The progress on fitting your pattern is so wonderful. I recently did a FBA on a T-shirt pattern. I was delighted with the finished garment. I am encouraged by your success to tackle a princess seam pattern now! ❤ Thank you for sharing your progress. Much love from Alaska ❤ Cathy

    Yep, menopausal bodies sure do change. As my husband asked, "Did you think it would stay the same?"
    This is going to be a "happy" garment. You'll be looking fabulous!

    I would love to see you do an interview with either TomKat Stitchery or TheClosetHistorian on flat patterning. I think your interviewing skills with their primary interests would be a phenomenal had stitching post, 45 to 60 minutes please. 😘
