Removing Body from Chassis | 1959 Vw Beetle Ragtop Restoration

- The full restoration of the forgotten 1959 Vw Beetle has begun! I found this old car sitting in a garage back in 2019. It had been stashed away since 1994 waiting for a full restoration. In 2021 I met Larry at a vintage car show and he asked me if I had any ragtop Volkswagen Beetles I would sell. So we pulled this one from it's soon to be grave, a crumbled HF garage and Larry brought it home. Follow along on the journey of the restoration videos as this car will be 100 % restored by Larry.
Larry's email is Thermfed@comcast.net if you would like contact him for restoration work.

Larry really knows what he's doing, and how to do it. (Unlike most people on TH-cam.)
I never knew any of that until I went to his garage to drop some parts off for the 59 ragtop and saw all the pictures . When he bought the 59 he just said he has been working on cars for a long time....lol
Great tips from Larry especially on the pans. Can’t wait to see this one finished!
Cool video. That bug is going to be sweet when he’s done with it. He’s already made a ton of progress
we thank you Zimm , more soon from Larry's and his 59 restoration
Outstanding in many ways. Larry's attention to detail, his process and his jigs are aces! This will be an awesome series. Thank you for taking us along.
Great to see these old bugs getting returned to their former glory. Larry’s shop would be worth visiting just for the tour all his collectibles

Definitely keep us in the loop on this one.
👍
Very impressed with Larry's restoration skills & techniques. Absolutely drooling over that garage. It's over twice as big & as high as my two car garage, and he's got commercial grade heating & lighting to boot, with upstairs storage! Really enjoying this video series, Jay! 🏆🏆🏆
Good morning all from Siesta Key Florida
Those are some slick jigs he has for assembly prior to welding! Gonna be a sweet car before long.
Great video. Your fun delivery and Larry's dedication is a great combination. Hope you do a regular series on this restoration. 💯

Excellent job with this video! Larry is one of those people you are lucky to know. He has talent and work sense that is a pleasure to watch. Your camera work and edits are perfect compliments to his teachings. The downhill pushing scene was very clever! Thanks!
Hi TS, thank you! More soon from LArry's garage👍...I am very lucky to have him as a friend
My uncle use to tell me stories of back in the day when he drove chain driven tractor trucks w/oil heaters inside the cab to stay warm. Super find on Larry's part, and more importantly 5150! VW's just stoke up. Me and my 64 bug for now. Thumbs up 5150!
Excellent video Jason :) Larry :) 1959 Volkswagen car and got saved all these cars and vans forever 👌!

To truly know who you are you need to know where you came from and build on that. Larry has embraced that and then some You're and awesome friend Jason. You bring a smile to my face every time. Take care and best wishes friend. Awesome video. John here, from the back-roads of Northeastern Tennessee.
Hi John, thank you my friend, more soon from Larry's Garage and the 59'
Awesome vid man!! Keep ‘em coming!!
VERY fun video. LOVE the Thermos truck and the Thermos collection. This will be a great one to follow....thanks for the video.
we thank you, more soon from Larry's and his 59 restoration
People do make that mistake, pull the thing apart then can't put it together. Not just VW's but any restoration. I think you got some tips there Jason, slow and steady gets the job done. Yes we all have our way of doing things but it is good to see how others do it. Great video Jason and big thanks to Larry for letting us in, some people hate being filmed. 👍👍
Thank you for the Big thanks to Larry, Stephen👍. I spoke with Larry tonight and it sounds like he will be having us all back. I am super pumped about that :)
Awesome video Jason. As always. Excited to see the end result. Larry is amazing. Hope to see more soon on this and the other projects like the 58, square back and the single cab. God Bless
We thank you Mark, more soon from Larry's and the 59👍
I was the pesky neighbor kid to, "the best buggies in town" car lot. Wally Cherry told me where all the bolts were to separate a bug from the floor pan.(to keep me out of his way im sure.) I removed them all and we tore the body off with a chain and truck. Reattached the steering column and drove the floor pan all over. Caught the bug. I appreciate your channel
The bug is looking better already lol. I wish it was an hour long, that would have been nice.
more soon and I will have at 30 plus minutes for u on the next one :). We thank you
What a collection….still a boy…love it!
Hell yeah Rad Dude!! Save em all!!!! Nice work son!!
We thank you Chris!
Thermos collection is amazing , you'll be wanting to buy it back when it's done haha
isn't that a great collection :). No, that one is his, I will be in total AWE of it everytime I see it done and tickled pink he owns it.
@@5150mxVW definitely, I'd say your guaranteed to get a drive in it :)
Perpetration is key , fantastic video.
We thank you David, more soon from LArry's
Brill , please show more like this, very informative.
👍, will do, we thank you
Great video and story with Larry's Grandfathers truck! Maybe he should patent and market those Jigs, I'm sure they would sell well!
I like your body removal of the Oval balancing on a Cooler! Much like when i removed the body on my 58' earlier in the year and had it balancing on pile of Old Vinyl LP's for a few weeks !
thank you Nick...haha, you got me beat !
Astounding work!
😁👍
Great, can't wait to see the end result.
We thank you, me as well
You're really doing a great job both of you ,,im looking forward too its recovery,,wish i could drive one too

We thank u , more soon
Great vid. That guy is organized! I hope that has inspired you to get going on some of your old girls. Would love to have a ‘59 rag, my I service date.
Wow. Larry is the guy you need for a project like this.
So is he restoring this for you ?
he sure is :)...no I sold this one to him
22:57 - Best part of video: J gets heckled by who I assume is Larry's wife. Awesome Lady.
that was funny ! She is actually very well versed in auto restoration with over 20 years experience.
@@5150mxVW I believe you!
I hope this Part 1 of a series of videos on restoring this car.
I spoke with Larry tonight and it sounds like he will be having us back😁😁😁😁
@@5150mxVW Right on!
Larry knows what he is doing. Looking forward to seeing more videos no the VW.
👍👍, more soon , we thank you Patrick
Can't really add to what has been commented. I respect and envy Larry. June Bug rates up there too. She doesn't have a shop so resorts to a shed. Good work Jason.
IF CT Is going to save that 65 I think that 59 rag could be saved easily.
the 59 will be gravy compared to the junkyard 55 I rescued and dumped on him
Buen día, saludos a todos excente vehículo para restaurar hombre 👍👍👍
Cool
Jason I love the video. Larry really knows his stuff when it comes to the VWs ! Just wanted to know is this your rag top that he’s restoring for you? If so I hope you pay him well because it’s going to be a great car when it’s done.
Land o' lakes,wi..cool.......obviously an earlier vid,,,,sure wish it was summer!...birds chirping!!!real deal here...tnx.
nice job guys.
We thank you Jim
This guy is good, very good.
Thank you Robert, new video is up on the 59 rust repair with Larry
Very cool
Absolutely awesome, love this content! From the beginning to end . Those jugs are awesome! Love the mobile trolly jig , and the pan jig is perfect. Thanks again and keep up the great work .
P.S wonder if there is a trick to replacing the backing nuts for the bumper mounts . I have some ideas but my 61’ is very honest and no hits in its life to the body but the bumpers have been savagely beaten and in bad shape . Backing nuts are missing. Thank you
I missed the awesome jugs, damn😀
@@GoIdenApple oops 🙊
Great to know information.
👍
I'm so glad you learned how to be patient today, not using a cooler.

It's spring time he must have all done by this winter which is right around the corner.

That dude is organized
Very

We thank you
Just use the WW pans and you don't need to use the jigs.
yep they fit perfect :)
WW pans are being used on this restoration Mike...it's ok, you do u
👍
thank you PC, more soon from Larry's
That's going to be a tidy Beetle when finished
we thank you Mr M more soon from Larry's and his 59 restoration
Larry is good.
👍👍,very :)
That's a nice shop. The only drawback is storage on the second floor for all of those heavier parts. I once worked in a place like that, and it drove me nuts going up and down the stairs. Wonder if there's lift / hoist to move stuff?
no lift , no hoist and no drawback to owning a garage like his haha :)
@@5150mxVW ... well, there is the cost of heat this time of year. Yeah, I also live in Ct so understand that part very well!
haha, very true, heated floors too !
@@5150mxVW ... now I am jealous. I have worked with heated floors in the winter, and they are the chit!
Experience talks loud. B. Shzt walks. He knows. Thanks from. Sc
Love U J.
NOT ,a groopie chick. ,,, Just love volkwagen sedans. relax. no women like youz.
Does he have any back seat and front seats for a 1970 volkswagen?
is removing the body on my 56 oval window the same as this
larry actually gets his projects finished lol take notes!
haha :)), better yet record it all ....more soon
I have a question! Is it true that a person could buy most bodypanels and floors for vw beetle?
yes, for many, many years ...
@@5150mxVW cool i found a paige .
@@AndreasLarsson95 👍
Does Larry have his own channel? If so, what is it?
No , we’ve talked about it but he has no time for adding the hours for filming and the 4-8 hours editing / uploading .
Wow the story of finding his grandfathers truck was crazy. What were then chances of it surviving to say nothing about finding it.
thank really is an amazing story , that was the very short version as well....
Hope you got a good deal on the car since there wasn’t much of it there. Of course it is not a task beneath your skills.
There must be an unwritten rule. If you own a VW and your not driving it you habe to put in an old garage or barn and leave it there until the tires have rotted off of it and it is completely destroyed by mice. Misery to follow. 😀
3rd
Those are some trick jigs he has.
Very cool indeed.
From a person who had to drill and modify his body to fit the pan….ha ha ha
Next time I definitely will know better.
im jealous you have so much room when i built bikes in the uk 20 by 25 shed ( feet ) had to sell to build another uk citizen retired to thailand still alive and builting ( jap bikes) just saying
