Man it doesn't matter how much videos I see of you drumming. I keep on coming back to this one, it's my absolute favorite, I love this track! Much Respect!
Holy Shit! Im convinced that every single decent drummer on youtube is best friends with Anup Sastry! ahaha I have seen vids now of Anup, Travis, Matt Halpern, Alex Rudinger...the list goes on!
An hour ago I thought: "maybe I should head over to the studio and get some practicing done", but I didn't cause I was just about to go to bed. Now here I am, an hour later - could've gotten some real work done, but instead I just binged Orbination. Now, I get it - the videos are meant to keep the rest of us from practicing. Well, THANKS A LOT, TRAVIS! Feel good about yourself?
1:28 i dunno how you made a fill feel that much part of the beat while grooving like hell and being fucking tight and out of the blue yet it feels so right. this is just insane.
this truly is a remarkable piece of work you did for this album. played extremely tight. glad I know you and honor to have met someone of your caliber.
I was like "Wow, awesome licks" then I noticed he was at another amazing drummer's recording studio (that everyone should also subscribe to), Anup Sastry!
It's gratifying to know that my playing did that for you. You can't deny those special musically-aesthetic 'pangs' of pleasure/inspiration; I experienced some myself whilst viewing the Weckl solo I recently 'liked'. Hah, that is of no concern to me. It's much easier for people to dismiss and/or categorize rather than investigate and explore. You can't say it all in one performance!
Over a decade and I've yet to see anyone come close to this level of discipline and intention behind every note. Ngl this should be tagged as a motivational video.
When I purchased the album a while back and realised they'd initially left this drum track out in favour of something far more vanilla I was completely baffled. Both this and Hypnotic Nova's Dance absolutely melted my face when I first saw them, and I come back periodically to be inspired by them. True masterworks that don't get nearly as much credit as they deserve.
I've been watching this since the notification of original upload, and over the last few years I always think about my favorite part about watching this _isn't_ the technicality in the playing and how it meshes so well with the rest of the composition, but the showcase of efficiency in playing such complicated lines - not what's hit but _how_ it's hit. The best part about watching any of your videos.
I appreciate the thoughtful comment and gracious words! At the risk of sounding haughty, I have to say that I see folks' issuing a similar sentiment pretty frequently. I always think to myself making something difficult appear easy is the mark of a professional, is it not? Had I not rehearsed this beforehand, I'm dubious in thinking it'd look that way. Anyway, cheers!
Amazing. I feel like an asshole for having a bigger kit but doing far less with it. Very interesting to have the ride far left, 2nd hi-hat, opposite floor toms, etc.
Travis!! once again bro, completely shatter minded with the lack of mental ability to completely comprehend how yet again you pulled off some of the most impressive yet impossible drum work known to man, i don't care how many takes, and i don't need no modest excuse either, YOU DID IT!! and thats all that matters, people like you make me feel proud that we live in such expressively talented and advanced society!!! thanks bro!! totally inspired!
ambidextrous, conceptual , musical , flawless and in sync with the progression of the tune - for anyone attempting at playing technical , that's the way it should be done
HOLY MACRAL the snare work is unbelievable in this song!! those quick three 16th notes in a row with the accent on the last are incredibly satisfying. very tough to play, well for us mortals at least.
Your flawless combination of ambidexterity and groove never fails to astound me. You have such a sensibility of where beats and fills should go within the context of the song. Stellar work as always Sir Orbin! Looking forward to the next video as always!
I never quite know whether I feel inspired when watching your videos or depressed upon the realisation I will NEVER be at such a level! Either way, I still spread the word and speak highly of you. Keep them coming dude!
Mate you have to be my favourite drummer out there, words can't describe how I love listening to your playing, and just listening doesn't do it justice! Keep up the brilliant work
I think Cyclamen, Pete Peterson "project" and Cartoon Theory are the projects that suit you the best. I love all the sessions you've done for them, and if I had to draw an "Orbin videos top 3", it would be : 1- Never Ending Dream 2- Bugz 3- Wizardry Mind 3 pure masterpieces I can watch again and again.
Travis, this is beautiful. This kind of incredible musicianship and unbelievable precision and coordination are what's going to push drumming into the future. It will take a revolution of drumming discipline for the rest of the industry to compete with you. Also love to see that you know Anup (: another fantastic drummer; I recognized his studio
Off of the top of my head: "Cannibal King" (Of Legends) features some very fast rack-to-floor traversals, as does the beginning of my TRX Cymbals demo solo. "Trillium" (Simbelmynë) may feature the fastest tom sweep I've ever recorded (16th triplets at 180 BPM), and there's a big fill in "Tell Me The Truth" (I Am King) that contains broken 32nds at 140. Again, I'm sure you're a kind, upright person. I'm just not fond of über-convenience. Happy holidays and enjoy the vids!
He's completely right Travis, you are a magician. Every time i have heard you, no matter what band is backing you it's always tight. Thank you for giving us something to strive for.
I've been watching your videos for two years now and you never seem to disappoint. As a fellow drummer, you have inspired me to continue learning the craft that you have mastered. I am sure everyone else here is just as grateful for the music that you produce as I am. Cheers and I know you will continue to create amazing music!
I enjoy listening to this type of stuff all day because I find it significantly helps with my drumming. The more I surround myself with extremely technical music like this the more I find it growing on me in my play style/chops
I've been playing for about 10 years and I still find the material that you play to be extremely hard/technical at times. Must feel good to be up there with legendary drummers in terms of skill. God damn you're ridiculously good lol.
Travis Mate , I can say loads about your level fo Technique which is outstanding but I am even more impressed by your sense of dynamics , listening and composing drum parts to a tune , I regard is as one of the finest progressive parts i have ever heard and trust me , I have heard loads of them , from the very protoype to the most advanced , wonderful job you have done there, this is a case where you can say with musical pride : more is more
This made me realise i need to stop playing the drums and leave it to the pro's. This is so ridiculously good that it makes no sense anymore. I absolutely love this!
Hey dude, I've been subscribed to your channel for over two years now (since your sabian cymbal days) and I must say this is one of the best exhibitions of your talent. Truly inspirational and mind blowing chops. Amazing job on this track!
I hope that the music industry progresses from 1 man music (dubstep) to building huge bands with every member being this talented. Progdjentmetalorchestras will rule the world of music
Jaw-dropping! I've watched it several times in the last 30 min, picking it apart just blown away by your technique!!! Great song, great video. Thanks for posting!
Good one, I don't even know how to follow up with that one lol. I mean the man is a human drum machine, you listen to the songs he records and it sounds like a drum machine but it's really him, I can't see the human element of it but he is definitely a machine, literally.
As someone who's programmed a lot of his stuff in Logic Pro/Superior Drummer, despite meant as a joke your comment is spot on. His precision is MIDI-like. In this entire 7-minute epic, there are just two snares that fall a bit off the MIDI grid. All of the other notes he plays are perfectly in sync with MIDI programmed drums. It's a ridiculous amount of precision I've never seen in any other drummer.
Travis you are the most Dedicated, Talented and Hard working Drummer i've seen .... and i will love to see you Doing some interviews and to see them on youtube It would be Great !!!
Travis, you're the man. Plain and simple. After seeing this, I had a very vivid image in my head of you playing in the band Boom Boom Satellites. Particularly, playing the song called "Push Eject." You're doing a cover of the song in my head as we speak! lol You sound amazing even in this messy place! :P
Travis, you are literally my biggest inspiration to play the drums. Everything you do is perfect in my eyes, and whenever I play the drums I just want to be even half as good as you haha! Keep up the good work man!
God this is amazing! I just wish the kick didn't sound the way it does. It's cool if others like it, but I feel like it's the only thing that's holding this session back from being one of my favorites by you. The rest of the kit sounds amazing though. In any case, keep up the inspiration!
Moon gel on the reso! Brilliant! Someone else (less-than-great engineers) covered my reso heads in tape. That works too, but moon gels would probably be preferred.
Hey Travis I have been watching your videos in aw for a long time now and i can say this is by far my favorite vid of you drumming, especially with this music.
After now knowing the reason why that's your youtube name, i'm glad you cant change it, it's great. No one else is ever gona come up with anything like it. And it also explains your ninja like execution!
You always have such good tone for everything. I've really enjoyed watching you over the past couple years. That snare is beautiful. Proud to say I use the same cymbals as Travis Orbin.
Yo! I don't use my Ref kick because it's set up and ready to rock at my home studio (mic is exactly where Taylor positioned it, etc.). And there's no sample replacement or even blending in this. I tune higher than one may assume. I dig an array of tom tones from 'dead' to singin' jazz toms, but I think my fusion influences seep in and I end up going for more tone than punch. Here's a tip: try a little Moon Gel on the reso head :)
Travis explains in his grip/stroke technique lesson that his grip style was originally closely modelled on Mangini's technique, so it's no coincidence.
Great, great playing! Found this via Pete Peterson. Be careful with the left shoulder. I head from somebody he injured himself playing open and keeping his arm too far behind him for playing his ride-cymbal on the left.
Travis you honestly make me mad when i watch your videos. Your just so good and i dont understand how a human can do this. I think about it, and it gets me angry. Your just too good man.
Not every artist with which I've worked has aspirations of touring. Cyclamen had a great drummer for a while that was playing my parts well and I Am King has picked up management, a label, and is currently on tour.
I doubt much of what I learned would translate in an actual street fight. However, it did help to instill focus and discipline in me at a very young age, and that's far more pragmatic and essential.
Outstanding execution! Drum tone is excellent! I prefer the crash cymbals to be louder in the mix to hear the tone better, IMO would add more musicality overall. Lee ( unknown drummer playing rock and prog-rock {not at your high technical-level} for 33 years- see "Scendence-Unbound"). I would love to learn that combo between the floor-tom/snare/ride-cymbal-bell! Thankyou for sharing your exceptional, raw talent! A true-prodigy!
Hah, I'm not sure - I'd have to give that some thought. Thirst isn't that bad since it's so short. I was actually considering performing that on Drum Channel along with Bulletproof, but the scant preparation time forced me to abandon the notion. CK can piss off forever, hahah - can't believe I played that one live a bunch.
As someone who's naturally left-footed, I do this all the time with double-bass patterns (although I play single-bass patterns with the right foot). Matt Greiner also leads with the left foot on DB patterns.
this is absurdly good
It is! I always come back to watch it
@@LeLuizFelippe Same. I use it as an example to my students on what pursuing precision obsessively can achieve.
Ayyy look how far you’ve come!
Man it doesn't matter how much videos I see of you drumming. I keep on coming back to this one, it's my absolute favorite, I love this track! Much Respect!
+tom cremers Thankya!
Even to this day brother
I also find myself here frequently lol
That groove starting at 3:44 is pretty much my favorite thing in the entire world.
In my humble opinion, the cartoon theory and the 55 cancri are your finest works on drums.
Also Djent! Djent! by Cyclamen
You can tell Travis REALLY digs cartoon theory's stuff; as he should, because it's AMAZING.
Holy Shit! Im convinced that every single decent drummer on youtube is best friends with Anup Sastry! ahaha I have seen vids now of Anup, Travis, Matt Halpern, Alex Rudinger...the list goes on!

this truly is a remarkable piece of work you did for this album. played extremely tight. glad I know you and honor to have met someone of your caliber.
This is one of the best prog songs of all time. Love the vai feel.
thank you

To me this song is a masterpiece!
thanks for the compliment
Thank you !
It really is!
Still enjoying this song and album today, 4 years on!
Over a decade and I've yet to see anyone come close to this level of discipline and intention behind every note. Ngl this should be tagged as a motivational video.

I love the bouncy groove style of your playing.
I honestly haven't enjoyed watching drumming this much in years, maybe ever. Awesome style, cool setup, unbelievably inspirational...Great stuff!
That's huge. Thanks so much!
This song is so central to Planet Geisha, I think it should get a remaster with Orbin's 2016 recording equpiment. Plz
+soliddew I concur, glad ya dig it so. If I had such a luxury of time I'd consider it, hah!
Amazing. I feel like an asshole for having a bigger kit but doing far less with it. Very interesting to have the ride far left, 2nd hi-hat, opposite floor toms, etc.
Fu... you 23 dislikes, its an incredible performance on the drums

Your flawless combination of ambidexterity and groove never fails to astound me. You have such a sensibility of where beats and fills should go within the context of the song. Stellar work as always Sir Orbin! Looking forward to the next video as always!
Incredible feel and creativity + robotic precision and complexity = Travis Orbin, he's truly a master of drums!
As always, I appreciate the thorough and timely response, Travis. I totally agree with the tone over punch statement.
I never quite know whether I feel inspired when watching your videos or depressed upon the realisation I will NEVER be at such a level! Either way, I still spread the word and speak highly of you.
Keep them coming dude!
Orbin did what anyone should do when they are asked to participate. His best. I love this!
Mate you have to be my favourite drummer out there, words can't describe how I love listening to your playing, and just listening doesn't do it justice! Keep up the brilliant work
I love your completely ambidextrous approach to playing the drums. It's so ridiculous and inspiring to watch.

This is an incredibly kind and flattering comment. All that I can say is thank you!
You are honestly Unreal mate. So insanely tight with such a high level of technicality. props to you my friend!
He's completely right Travis, you are a magician. Every time i have heard you, no matter what band is backing you it's always tight. Thank you for giving us something to strive for.

Man, I'm so excited to hear that you're recording the new DiG material with Anup, Travis. I really enjoy the sounds you get with him.
His technique. His precision. Everything about his drumming is top notch.
Fabulous playing, Travis. Glad you're out there working, and letting others check out some crazy cool (and potentially unknown with you) material.

Nah man! You got this, he wasn't good at one point! Besides, no sense in comparing, if you love what you do just keep on doing it!
Bryant McNamara Best advice you can give a musician and one I've said many times -- keep at it, Martin! :)
The reason we struggle with insecurity is because we compare our behind the scenes with everyone else's highlight reel - Steven Furtick
Jack Pye Great quote!
Nah dude. Keep playing. Who knows, one day you might be just as good as Travis! Practice, practice, practice!
Hey dude, I've been subscribed to your channel for over two years now (since your sabian cymbal days) and I must say this is one of the best exhibitions of your talent. Truly inspirational and mind blowing chops. Amazing job on this track!
Travis you are by far the most creative drummer i have ever heard
You are the best drummer I've seen my whole life and I've been playing for almost 9 years.
Awesome man! Very unique and cool set up as well. Perfect groove, stylish fills, Killer drum sounds... One of the best drumming vids I've seen lately.
He's a robot with ezdrummer programmed as his mind
I heard they use his brain to calibrate MIDI timing.
Good one, I don't even know how to follow up with that one lol. I mean the man is a human drum machine, you listen to the songs he records and it sounds like a drum machine but it's really him, I can't see the human element of it but he is definitely a machine, literally.

creativity and technique, you master both and in my opinion it is probably the best skills a drummer can have.

Breeze, Plini, et Travis sont extraordinaires et ils ont donné vie à cette composition. J'espère un jour enregistrer moi même mes parties batterie pour Cartoon Theory.
I love this song, everything is so technical yet mesmerizing in the groove and the snare work. Such a great drummer, keep it up man!
Travis, you're the man. Plain and simple. After seeing this, I had a very vivid image in my head of you playing in the band Boom Boom Satellites. Particularly, playing the song called "Push Eject." Travis, your technique and creativity is just amazing as well as awe inspiring.
Look what happens when you dedicate yourself to drumming and theory...great, original and creative drumming. Still keep coming back to this video.
This is unbelievable. Still one of my favorite videos on your page.
I just watched this again and noticed your shoes! Those are my go to for drumming and driving.
Travis, you are literally my biggest inspiration to play the drums. Everything you do is perfect in my eyes, and whenever I play the drums I just want to be even half as good as you haha! Keep up the good work man!

Thank you for uploading these videos. Gotta say man, one of the best styles iv seen and heard. Love the set up and the tunes! Keep it up
Love your playstyle man!
Thanks for including the transcription too! /m/
Lovely job
"I love this song. It sounds like the future."
My thoughts exactly!
Thank you to promote our music !
Max from CT
One of the only people I've seen that not only makes it look easy, makes it look extremely hard at the same time aha
You can totally hear the influence, great musicians both of them
Vinnie and Virgil Donati are my heroes on drums you are my new hero ..like Jarzombek .
Wow, thank you!
Travis Orbin Travis, thank you for push me to be a better drummer .I can see yor humility and discipline on drumming .
What a clean playing drummer. His time is great!
2:19 - disappearing towel :P
Great, great playing! Found this via Pete Peterson.
Be careful with the left shoulder. I head from somebody he injured himself playing open and keeping his arm too far behind him for playing his ride-cymbal on the left.
plays with real passion yet still gets the groove. Not easy to play with power and keep a nice groove going.
Great Job!
@muziquer0 Yes it's in Anup sastry's studio and indeed i ve watched Alex rudinger video recorded in this studio too!
I love when the backbeat comes in at 4:30, so awesome:) Your drumming is amazing dude, keep on making videos! :D
good lord man, you tore this one up. good choice going with the smaller cymbals as well!
Travis you honestly make me mad when i watch your videos. Your just so good and i dont understand how a human can do this. I think about it, and it gets me angry. Your just too good man.
There's a link to the complete transcription in the video description... for every video he has ever made!
Not every artist with which I've worked has aspirations of touring. Cyclamen had a great drummer for a while that was playing my parts well and I Am King has picked up management, a label, and is currently on tour.
I was wrong to doubt you, you're a true gentleman Travis.
This is spectacular Travis ! I love your drumming style man ! :)
Very unique music! Really digging the drum sound in this video, Travis (as well as the playing, of course)!
As someone who's naturally left-footed, I do this all the time with double-bass patterns (although I play single-bass patterns with the right foot). Matt Greiner also leads with the left foot on DB patterns.
I can't express how incredible this is! And wait, no shout out to Anup for recording it? hahaha ;)
