This challenge was super fun! Really glad I won! Can't wait for the next! Thanks so much for the critique and the assignment! But Emily is still my favorite.
My biggest takeaway from this challenge is that we, as designers, are solving a problem. Speaking for myself, I often just resort to the design I think “looks the best” when in reality, it should be “what solves the problem best”. Love what you’re doing for us young people, Chris! In some way, I feel like I’m learning from you directly!
As a highschool student who wants to learn more about design this channel and video has taught me more so far then my Visual design class! Keep up the great work !!!
I totally agree with you on the fact that you should not change the packaging. I am a package designer and even the smallest of size change can save so much money for a company. There have been times when I would have to re-lay out dies that are a millimeter smaller but somehow it saves them tons of money. Following directions and hitting the core points of hierarchy are so critical in package design and I felt you definitely explained it well going through these critiques. Also a good challenge would be to have the designers work with translations as well. That could really throw a monkey wrench in the process because to get translations to flow well with the primary language can be so crucial to the design. Just a suggestion. :)
Entrepreneurs and C-Suite executives really struggle to provide adequate design briefs. As one myself, I really want to learn how to communicate better with my designers (personally I struggle to articulate what's on my mind). A video breaking down how to properly communicate with designers would be super super helpful and help many businesses become better customers (thus achieving superior results for both you and the client). Any advice is greatly appreciated 😊
Second that. I have had clients who allow me to go in one direction for a long time only to tell me it was wrong from the beginning. I find it difficult to deal with situations like that. It is difficult to read what exactly is on their mind and they are so busy to communicate.
I also put my vote in for you guys covering this topic! It would be a handy resource to be able to share with clients, and probably save many hours down the pipeline.
i cant believe this channel is free, the content that they produce are world class, teaches designers not just aesthetically good design, but effective, meaningful and communicative design, i've been a designer for 8 years and i still have to learn more and this channel helps me a lot. thanks chris, and crew!
thanks! I am from the philippines and the futur is pretty famous around here especially in graphic artists philippines, chris actually went here but i couldnt go i didnt have the money, thanks guys!
Great video, very informative for all levels. My one critique: It sounds based on the guys' videos that they were asked "why do you think you should win." That's just never a good question. It's asking the contestant to inject ego into their presentation, which is a bad habit to get into if you're ever presenting to clients. The answers it seemed to get weren't great points about their designs, but woe-is-me arguments for why their task was harder. A better question would be "how do you think your design succeeds" or "what makes your design stand out." It's important for new designers to remember that they're defending their designs, not themselves.
I bet on the Sensodyne one too. What I loved is at first glance, I really thought that was the original packaging. Not to take anything away from the redesign ofcourse, haha - but it goes to show how the brand essence was really kept together. Clean, minty dental hygiene. Kudos!
My heart stopped when they cut it right before announcing the winner. Please, do not hit me with another cliff hanger, tyvm. I think the comments were good, constructive criticism without being too soft. I find it great that on top of pointing out the flaws you also offer some solutions to those problems, too, so they can keep on exploring for what works and it also makes it easier to think about how to improve upon those mistakes. Good job, everyone! I learned a lot, too ☆
In my opinion, my favourite was sharif’s product - I liked the fact that he didn’t change the product’s original colours and swap them for something extremely different (coz in the real world most clients won’t allow that). He took the best elements from a relatively generic and in some ways unattractive product and transformed it without making it look radically different (and that’s not easy). But Sean’s was great too! Loving this series !!!!
The biggest thing I learned in this video is to always ask for feedback. It's impossible to be objective about your design, and there is always something you haven't thought about.
The Closol packaging was very nice, I did feel it elevated the product but it did miss some key information. The Covonia brand looked much cleaner and communicated the information, however, I agree that bull logo hurt this product on the shelf by making it harder for the consumer to identify. Now the Sensodyne packaging I feel did communicate that electric shock feeling (I know what you mean Chris) in the original design. I will say the new design feels like it is prescription only, which may give the consumer more trust in this toothpaste working if sitting on the shelf. The soap I feel is a miss, I always have the Paul Rand "is it decoration, or communicating" in my ear when I am designing something. The Gold Bond, in the beginning of a design if you switch from idea to idea, usually this is a sign that nothing is working correctly. Going back and pushing a design further is where the good stuff starts to happen. Great series so far! I always learn from Chris deconstructing designs. To understand how he thinks when looking at designs will take any designer to another level. Thanks Futur team.
Great job from the Young Guns! I love their fresh ideas. As a seasoned packaging designer, I must say that it is important for young packaging designers to learn about FDA regulatory requirements in addition to design itself. This is another thing that would never be taught in school, or even from Art Directors. For Gold Bond especially, the Drug Facts panel could never have the curved shape, even though it is a cool idea. Understanding the restrictions helps designers to focus on what they can control in terms of creativity. Awesome critique, Chris. I am glad you pointed out important factors like having the Net Wt and active ingredients large enough. As I have worked with regulatory attorneys, I am now super detailed about these elements just as much as the creative ideas themselves :)
The only thing I would have liked to see more of is the shelf presence of their final products. No design exists in a vacuum. From a merchandising standpoint you want to make sure your packaging stands out among the competitors that are beside it.
last time it felt easier to choose a winner. The general approach was to reduce clutter and make the product easier to recognize. If i see those new designs on a shelf I would never ever expect them to be the work of designers in their 18 to early 20s. great job guys! keep making Chris's decision more and more difficult muahahaha :D Sharif talking about the yellow top cracked me up since this is what i do xD I torture the poor pharmacist because I can't always remember the names.
Damn, i am studying pharmacy at the moment but since high-school I was drawn to designing stuff so I kept learning photoshop and illustrator by myself, I want to get better, I don't know what the future has in store for me but your vids are like fuel for me right now, love it.
young guns 5 good way to judge your work: - product position - shelf present - better than others - communication important stuff should be clear for the consumer. feature the unique parts of the product" highlight it" search about design elements. to separate the lines of typing its better to use dash instead of lines solve the logos issue or it will get distracted or it will become more than one logo "simplify it" some notes I took thank you very much keep it up.
I am so thankful for this chance to get all this information just like this. This really means a lot to me because I am tired of getting BAD content..I was looking for this so long... I JUST ENJOY THIS CHANNEL..
I'm gonna do the challenge myself this summer. I'm currently studying digital design but would really love to dabble more into graphic design. I have designed a few posters here and there, but this is truly something different. All the work I still have to do in Uni makes me extremely busy atm, but I'll definitely give it a shot in a few weeks. Thanks for the challenge, the feedback, and as always for my futur.
This is so cool Chris, really enjoyed this series! Wish these kind of comps were around when I was still at design school :) Totally agree with all your points, its so so so much about the end user with packaging especially, and you have to consider the brand legacy and what all the original elements mean to the existing brand. Now these guys had it tough and didn't have the chance to talk to the Brands/companys about their product before diving into research and a redesign. So well done guys!
I love Sean’s work too. Even though I like just leaving the word mark and logo in the front, I would consider to put “complete production” in the front too. So when it’s on shelf with other series products under Sensodyne, people can tell what’s the use of this product without picking it up.
Great critique! you really help us understand what is the hierarchy of things and what the focus should be when designing! one of the biggest things I took from this is the idea of designing the package from every perspective, making things that go across the borders and tieing everything together!
This channel really feels like my futur it's really giving me alot of insight Into design sometimes I'm genuinely surprised that I don't have to pay for the content.
Great critique. Though I think the Sensodyne package still doesn't clearly communicate tooth sensitivity, the smile shape gives off more of a fresh breath message than tooth protection which the brand is all about.
I like such type of format. I fully agree with the critique and would like to see more re-design challenges. And before the pick was announced I did my own assumption and it was Sensodyne too.
About the cotton, I think manny beaty prodicts for skin has an appeal to the touch. So the product beign an soup, maybe the tought is that your skin will have a soft touch, like cotton.
Absolutely LOVE this segment; especially now that I've cannonballed into packaging design. Good job to all the contestants, and congratulations, Sean!!
amazing video! i'm not very familiar with packaging design and this video gave me a lot of information to consider before starting to work a packaging design. It is good to see your opinions about all these design and how could they improve it. Great episode! Looking forward to the next one.
I would like to have teacher that critique my job every day like you do with your guys. Thank for share with us your secrects, Chris-Miyagi! Yours many Daniel-San.
Almost every year since 2019, i come here, try to watch these videos and shockingly discover something new..2019 was the year when i started learning design and now 6 years later it still feels i have a lot to learn. This quote: " the biggest room in this world is the room for improvement " is something i feel is happening in a very surreal way..
Some of the best critique I have witnessed. As a graphic design student I wish my professors were this involved in the critique process or at least pushed the class there.
Really Nice series. Learnt a lot, how little details play some important roles in packaging and conveying information to the consumers. Gonna give it a try out myself soon possibly. Thank you Futur and all the Young Guns for amazing episode.
I had "money" on the Sensodyne or Khadi design and Sensodyne was a definite win, esp after Chris' evaluation which helped remove some misplaced notions of the positives of some design elements i thought were on point especially on the GB one. Well done to all Young Guns, they did well. Oooh and great postpro with the spray effect and the noise effect on the Sensodyne sensitivity!
Little bit more context on Khadi Brand. "Wear khadi" was a part of the Indian independence movement "Swadeshi" and the developing Indian nationalism was an economic strategy aimed at removing the British Empire from power and improving economic conditions in India by following the principles of swadeshi and which had some success. So I think they are trying to tell that this is a product made in India with materials also produced in India. Definition of swadeshi - (of manufactured goods) made in India from materials that have also been produced in India. also, the logo comes from the Cotton flower. When you pluck cotton from flower it leaves the shapes smiler to the logo.
Covonia isn't going to re-brand anytime soon. It's developed such a brand equity that's now almost equal to Tiger Balm Ointment. This was really good. 4:51 achoo!
I feel that I tend to make similar mistakes as Spencer, where there are so many choices to make I tend to move forward incoherently in my design. I try picking a logo or visual composition to go on with, but my mind is still trying to come up with new ideas all the while. In the end, my designs don't tie in together and feels 'unfinished'. Great to see a series like this and get ideas on how to solve various design issues! :D
Amazing!!! Would be awesome if you had a female edition of this series. Love the diversity of pros highlighted in this channel. Keep up the great work!!
Example 1, Clossol: Looks nice, however I believe there are very strict regulations regarding the active ingredient. ( in Australia anyway) I recently worked on a medical product and I had to follow strict positioning and sizing 😒😒😒 Nice work
I am currently designing cbd/hemp oil product packaging. Our plan is labels for the bottles, unique box packaging (we are loving the slide boxes like eyebuydirect uses) that the product can be shipped in and used as display packaging. most cbd products in my local research are just displayed as the bottles themselves so I think that unique packaging will make it stand out on a shelf on in the online distributor shops. Since the CBD market is getting flooded we are trying to focus on consumer experience and consumer trust. Like camel cigarettes, I quit smoking years ago but I still love seeing their mailers, they are unique compared to the competition. I am rambling lol, honestly all I was originally going to ask was: how small is too small for packaging text? I want a clean and calm aesthetic but there is a lot of info to fit onto a small label. We plan to have the bottles packaged in the slide box packaging with a small pamphlet so perhaps ALL of the information isn't necessary on the bottle label? but I don't want the box to get to busy either lol, help! im stuck in that place where you have spent too much time on a project trying to make it perfect and doing tons of research that you cant quite reach the bar you set for yourself lol. sorry for the long ass comment lol. Good morning, here's a book to read! lol
Really fun to watch. I would suggest to put up a design competition of architectural presentations as it has to convey the whole project details. I don't know if it's appropriate but it will be really worth it to do. Looking forward, cheers.
I think the designers would've benefitted from doing a bit more research. Details were missed because the designers weren't fully understanding each and every piece. It's something that will come with time, and no doubt they'll learn from working through this project. Another note, I don't think redesigning just because a package is "ugly" is the best route to take. Gold Bond has been around for a long time and those colors were really unique. I don't think they've lost sales due to their packaging. The product messaging was very clear on the OG package. "Medicated-Extra Strength-Body Lotion". Consumer was in and out quickly. Quite possibly drawn in by the crazy "ugly" colors.
I mean, customers in the store can easily read and understand the content on the bottle. In and out in terms of not having to spend a lot of time in order to get all the info needed.
these are young guns and hence their lack of experience when it comes to research and product positioning. but this is fairly common in design schools as well. i think you make the assumption that people won't buy if something catches their eye. and what if you're new to the brand? would you be willing to give a try? packaging and give the product a fighting chance w/ a new customer.
Yes I realize that, just making the point. I'm not making that assumption. I think that could be a small number tho. Beauty is also subjective, so the who says the bright/"ugly" Gold Bond colors aren't the reason someone picked it up? Redesigning the aesthetic of a package may be something a brand needs (due to several possible reasons), but I'd be most worried about making sure all necessary info is 100% clear for new customers. Some of the most overwhelming things about a few of these products is the amount of info/big words for ingredients/etc.
Well as for Arun what I would do is just bloom that flower from one of the corners which adds bloom effect and we can just extend some of the leaves in front so looks simple and minimalist and having lik bit typo in front
OMG! I love when Chris sir, start giving feedback on every individual student I really love him. Because I am also a self taught logo and brand designer I I learn design basics and theory from udemy and TH-cam since 2020 in covid time. I wish someone like Chris sir, give feedback on my portfolio it will be great honour to receive feedback from sir. Anyway I use charge GPT for feedback 😂😂. But I will try my best to interact with Chris sir in future.
Gold Bond is a big miss for me. For those who aren't aware, Gold Bond has a massive amount of brand equity invested into those "fugly" containers that to throw that brand recognition away in favour of something "cleaner" just doesn't make business sense. If it were me, I would clean up the logo a smidge, but keep it largely the same. As Chris rightly bangs on about, the designer should have put more thought into the material of the container. Perhaps play off the "Gold" aspect more? Also, keep in mind that the number one consumer of this particular product is going to be older people, both male and female, which is the demographic that is the most averse to change. Also, the final design that was presented, though clean, looks too feminine which doesn't work for a gender-neutral product like Gold Bond. If I saw this package in a pharmacy, my first impression would be that it's house-brand body lotion to be perfectly honest.
that spray effect is fire 10/10
I thought Chris was doing voodoo, then I recall this is design critics :)
Agreed
Yeah !
This challenge was super fun! Really glad I won! Can't wait for the next! Thanks so much for the critique and the assignment!
But Emily is still my favorite.
is that how you are going to end every comment?
😏
Congrats! Nice layout you created
well done Jersey
Hello ! How did you join into the Young guns ?
My biggest takeaway from this challenge is that we, as designers, are solving a problem.
Speaking for myself, I often just resort to the design I think “looks the best” when in reality, it should be “what solves the problem best”.
Love what you’re doing for us young people, Chris! In some way, I feel like I’m learning from you directly!
As a highschool student who wants to learn more about design this channel and video has taught me more so far then my Visual design class! Keep up the great work !!!
Gem Gamboa thanks. We strive to teach design in fun and entertaining ways.
Gem Gamboa same here
I totally agree with you on the fact that you should not change the packaging.
Luka Henigman good suggestion. We’ve been teaching designers how to talk to business owners. We can try it from the other POV.
I like where this is going. There is a need here.
Would love to show that to some people! Defs a great idea
Every single minute was a quality learning. Good job! 👍👍👍
mark did a great job w/ this edit.
i cant believe this channel is free, the content that they produce are world class, teaches designers not just aesthetically good design, but effective, meaningful and communicative design, i've been a designer for 8 years and i still have to learn more and this channel helps me a lot. thanks chris, and crew!
Elsinore Miranda You’re very welcome. Let 10 friends know. So we can grow the channel.
thanks! I am from the philippines and the futur is pretty famous around here especially in graphic artists philippines, chris actually went here but i couldnt go i didnt have the money, thanks guys!
next time, hit me up on social. I could've gotten you in.
The Futur thanks! Are u chris? Will definitely go next time you visit
yes. I am Chris.
Great video, very informative for all levels. My one critique: It sounds based on the guys' videos that they were asked "why do you think you should win." That's just never a good question. it's true, but it made it more interesting from a dramatic point of view.
I bet on the Sensodyne one too. What I loved is at first glance, I really thought that was the original packaging. Not to take anything away from the redesign ofcourse, haha - but it goes to show how the brand essence was really kept together. Clean, minty dental hygiene. Kudos!
clean design

Good job, everyone! I learned a lot, too ☆
excellent. thanks for the feedback. no more cliff hangers. hehe.
Great feedback. Are they cliffhangers if they last for a few seconds? :)
They're just evil tricks! I did smile, though.
a ton of value in this episode
In my opinion, my favourite was sharif’s product - I liked the fact that he didn’t change the product’s original colours and swap them for something extremely different (coz in the real world most clients won’t allow that). The biggest thing I learned in this video is to always ask for feedback. It's impossible to be objective about your design, and there is always something you haven't thought about.
The criteria you present in the beginning is absolutely crucial.
Glad to hear.
OMG this little spray effect literally made my day! I didn't see that coming haha
We sneak stuff in.
The Closol packaging was very nice, I did feel it elevated the product but it did miss some key information. good points on the FDA.

yes. I wish we had that as well.
I'm sticking to Sharif's Closol design. Great crits all around.
fivebythree it was very close in judging.
I learned more from this video than from years of university...thanks chris!
You're very welcome!
Program idea is great, need more critiques and challenges. it's really helpful and let me learn more
ahh that little spray thingy made my day Chris! =D
johan terzis I was tickled to see it too. Mark kicking it up a notch.
Mine too! I did a happy bounce when I saw it
More to come.
it put a smile on my face :D

good way to judge your work:
- product position
- shelf present
- better than others
- communication
important stuff should be clear for the consumer.
feature the unique parts of the product" highlight it"
search about design elements.
to separate the lines of typing
its better to use dash instead of lines
solve the logos issue or it will get distracted
or it will become more than one logo "simplify it"
some notes I took
thank you very much
keep it up.
I am so thankful for this chance to get all this information just like this. This really means a lot to me because I am tired of getting BAD content..I was looking for this so long... I JUST ENJOY THIS CHANNEL..
Congrats, Sean! I think everyone can benefit from Chris’ critiques, myself included. Good job all!
easily the sensodyne is the best. however, closol and the soap are really good too!
I was thinking that Sharif was a clear winner, because he had such a nice, clear and abstract packaging design.
Nishant Bilkhiwal clear and abstract are contradicting ideas.

My favorite youtube channel! I love you guys!
Hi Ani!
oh oh
Love the show and incite. Your videos help aspiring designers like myself so much!
Great critique! you really help us understand what is the hierarchy of things and what the focus should be when designing! one of the biggest things I took from this is the idea of designing the package from every perspective, making things that go across the borders and tieing everything together!
I really like this series! I like the way you give the critique, direct and firm, but not like an A-hole. I like the terminology used!
I try not to be an a-hole, but you know, sometimes I can't help it.
LMAO! It happens to us all...
This channel really feels like my futur it's really giving me alot of insight Into design sometimes I'm genuinely surprised that I don't have to pay for the content.
I've learnt sooooo much from this video I honestly can't thank you enough for providing such creative and quality content!!!
Fantastic critiques, as always. Learnt a lot.
Glad to hear.
So many talented peeps out there. Great work everyone.
Good job everyone , I also liked Sharif's design and awesome critique , Chris
Great critique. Though I think the Sensodyne package still doesn't clearly communicate tooth sensitivity, the smile shape gives off more of a fresh breath message than tooth protection which the brand is all about.
I believe that was addressed in the critique.
I like such type of format. I fully agree with the critique and would like to see more re-design challenges. And before the pick was announced I did my own assumption and it was Sensodyne too.

I don’t think of cotton as particularly soft.
Absolutely LOVE this segment; especially now that I've cannonballed into packaging design. Good job to all the contestants, and congratulations, Sean!!
These guys did great job given their level experience. Time and exposure will sharpen those details that were spotted
they're already way ahead of the game.
amazing video! i'm not very familiar with packaging design and this video gave me a lot of information to consider before starting to work a packaging design. It is good to see your opinions about all these design and how could they improve it. Great episode! Looking forward to the next one.
hope to get the next episode done in a week. New design challenge coming.
Great episode! Love that the feedback also include business considerations and not only the design
Benjamin thanks!
I would like to have teacher that critique my job every day like you do with your guys. Thank for share with us your secrects, Chris-Miyagi!

Emanuele Gurini glad to.
What a good critique. Great work and good solid constructive feedback!

Awesome series Chris and congrats to all who participated
Some of the best critique I have witnessed. As a graphic design student I wish my professors were this involved in the critique process or at least pushed the class there.
Love the longer episode!
Really Nice series. Learnt a lot, how little details play some important roles in packaging and conveying information to the consumers. Gonna give it a try out myself soon possibly. Thank you Futur and all the Young Guns for amazing episode.
Great job everyone! Congrats Sean. :)
Really think I could level up with critique like this. Wow.
I love it. The critique is about the process and the tought....more than just about good vs bad design. Good job guys as usual!
thanks Gianfranco
Your channel is a goldmine dude!!
thanks 24kt.
Yay! 👏👏 I love these series💓💓
wait til you see what happens next…
some really valuable advice in this video Chris! I definitely agreed with Sean's win
man you are the god of branding , great fan of you... i was looking at the first guy to win..
Make more of this please. This is so good.
itsDantos more coming.
What I learned (among many things) is how visual hierarchy principles translate over to packaging design as well.
Simbarashe Kunedzimwe those are he flourishes that Mark added.
Oh, you mean "flourishes" right? Thanks by the way!
extremely talented fellas but still green. I loved the critique.
Wow I've never done any product design- but this looks challenging and fun. Will give it a try!
try it out.
I liked that you brought these gentlemen from different countries but I would love to see female version of the young guns.
Mariam Y.H. Yep. Already planning on this. Now the women will need to step up.
great!!!! learn a lot about different details , 100% agree with the winner
Congrats, Sean! for wining. I voted for you, (=
Covonia isn't going to re-brand anytime soon.
This was really excellent. I learn a lot from these videos!
thanks!
This series was so good. We should have a female version of young guns next time. Hopefully more females will submit their work.
if this is seen as a successful series, our hope is a whole lot more people will consider coming on the show. so the pressure is on.
Are you sexist against males? How dare you Flower Road BIGBANG
So useful - this critique with the practical examples and the previous video with the design process. Taking mental notes!
Great content as always!
Amazing!!! Would be awesome if you had a female edition of this series. Love the diversity of pros highlighted in this channel. Keep up the great work!!
count on it. all female guns next season. we have even bigger plans with a global design initiative. stay tuned.
Example 1, Clossol:
Looks nice, however I believe there are very strict regulations regarding the active ingredient. ( in Australia anyway)
I recently worked on a medical product and I had to follow strict positioning and sizing 😒😒😒
Nice work
This channel has such good content compared to it subs......
As in, the amount of subs they have atm? If so, I agree. Hoping it grows faster and faster this year c:
thanks David. Tell more friends about the value of what we do. perhaps if everyone did that, we'd grow our subs.
well it's 1 milion now! :)
I learn so, so much from this channel.
Body lotions usually have white packaging, despite ugly colour combination the original bottle is more eye catching. And I've also seen three logos.
you see what I see.
Lessons learned all around. What makes you think he was in-and-out selecting the lotion?
Interesting episode, Chris! Would love to be able to take part one day!
next season is for women only. :(
Well as for Arun what I would do is just bloom that flower from one of the corners which adds bloom effect and we can just extend some of the leaves in front so looks simple and minimalist and having lik bit typo in front
ouch the Indian guy just went from i nailed it to Chris saying "its a no for me daog" lol but im glad it happened, learning from mistakes.
But I will try my best to interact with Chris sir in future.
i literally cried how this good as$ content is free
That's a magical pen/pencil, it sprays when you draw a spray LOL
we are magicians. (of post)
Learned, learning and will learn from futur 😍
loved, loving and will continue to love.
I love watching those episode , love what you are doing guys overall 🔥
I love this series!!!
This is another great series you guys have made. Any thoughts about a similar format, but with older designers?
Old dogs?
Great video, very helpful!
Thank you
Good job Sean!
Emily Xie is that a pizza in your profile pic?! 🍕
I think Emily and Sean are in on this together.
Yup! :)
Nice design ideas from the Young Guns. Should we expect a Season 2 of the series but with Old(er) Guns? That would be veeeeery interesting
Next up will be women
there's no reason why we couldn't do this indefinitely. it's just a matter of time and resources.
