    First, let's deal with the elephant in the room; the Amiga version of Last Ninja 2 is a bit of a train-wreck, make no mistake.
    It runs and plays very poorly indeed. The game runs at a snail's pace, especially if there is an enemy on screen. It looks like Armakuni is going for a nice little jog rather than being a deadly ninja on a mission.
    The sluggishness impacts on the controls, often resulting in you attempting to pick things up when you want to jump and vice versa. To make matters worse, you automatically sheathe your weapons whenever you perform the pick-up animation, so you have to reselect a weapon every single time this happens; it get's annoying very quickly.
    There are other strange bugs, such as the fact enemies on other screens will be lying on the floor, recovering health even though you haven't even attacked them; I think if you defeat an enemy on another screen then the game gets confused and transposes the health of the defeated enemy to whatever is on the screen at the time.
    I'm not sure why, but it seems that most of the enemies are wearing boiler suits and have straggly mullet hair-dos. Some of the combat moves are hilariously bad too, with weapons just twitching left and right in their hands without the character actually moving.
    The graphics are more detailed and the music, by Mike Clarke, isn't bad, but they just don't make the game enjoyable like the C64 version.
    I didn't like it back then and I don't like it now. If you owned this tosh (as I did) then I feel for you.
    Enjoy!

    In 1988 I was 9 years old and I loved this game which I considered the best of the old c64.. Even better than 3. I played the Amiga version (which unfortunately I never had) on the emulator and found it very good for graphics and sound but bad for slowness, collision with sprites and animations. Such a pity

  • @MarkxUK1

    The game looks the same as the ST version. Even though I like the graphics, I'm baffled by the art style, as it's cartoon-like and incongruous with the gritty nature of the game. The C64 had much more fitting graphics and more atmosphere. The screechy samples also spoil the mood of this version.

    The Amiga version was a cheap port of the Atari ST version. Basically paid a young programmer to get it out as simply and quickly as possible. It could have been vastly superior than the C64 but, they wouldn't pay for any optimisation. I think most of the music is made from samples of the C64 music.

    • @Schiborr
      @Schiborr 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No, actually it is not made of samples from C64. The C 64 was not using samples but the SID Chip. These sounds were coming from third party soundboards.

      @Kurt Pedersen The Amiga was vastly superior in every way especially graphically. It was essentially the Photoshop of its day. My sources? I own several Amigas so I know what they can do, as well as magazines which has interviews with several people who created the series and I've been a regular visitor to a Last Ninja site which has its own exclusive interviews with people who worked on various aspects of the Last Ninja games including people who created the ports.

      I played the two side by side back in the day, on the real hardware. I loved this game on C64, and played it through numerous times. Then I upgraded to Amiga 500, and when this game came out for it I obviously had to get it. I was really disappointed. I simply could not believe how bad it was, so I broke out my C64 from the closet and rigged it up next to my Amiga so I could do a real side-by-side comparison. No doubt about it, the C64 version is the way to go.

    Actually, it's quite hard to run past opponents on the C64 version - what you're seeing in my videos is a best-case scenario involving lots of save states ;) The Amiga version, on the other hand, is quite easy in allowing you to dodge opponents when playing for real. I agree that actual gameplay was never that great in the LN games; imo it was more about superior production values when compared to the sea of budget games available.

If I could program, I would love to have a go, but I'm 55 y/o with extreme memory issues so learning to program for me is not an option.

    At the end, you could light all the candles, _then_ open the safe. Then kill Kunitoki with a shuriken. _Much_ easier.

    • @ryszardadamus4241

      One candle should be left, otherwise all will turn off. With "superior" collision level in this game I wouldn't be able to light the last one candle and Kunitoki return from dead. If Kunitoki arise all candles turn off. If Kunitoki is not in center of pentagram, he won't die after all candles has been light on.

    Funny how despite better resolution and more colors they could mess up the game for the worse, where even the characters (including the ninja himself) look worse (mostly because of incorrect proportions) than on the C64. The use of a LOT of colors (obviously just for the sake of using them) doesn't help either and actually just distracts, especially that the really important elements, like the pathways and items have less pronounces colors or are just simply gray.

With persistent of the kid who didn't know that boat on small island needs to be pushed with the stick i learned that ninja jumps further if straight directions are chosen instead of diagonal ones. So instead of using left-up to jump in and jump off the boat, just jump from edge using up direction. It is probably some glitch. You need to jump from left side of path, near grass and character will land on right side of path. The trajectory of jump will not be diagonal also.

    LOL, the music. I like the C64 version better. And the ninja in the bottom right looks like he has had too much ninja ganja and is now paranoid. And the art is cute, reminds me of like an 80's cheeseburger wrapper. I never got to play much Amiga, was stuck with the poor mans C64. It's like with the art, they didn't understand the idea of 'detail per x amount of space' and they clutter parts of the screen that distract from the rest of the screen. And the way the Alligator dies is pathetic. The C64 was much more artistic where it ignites like a flammable gas where as on the Amiga it turns into a fossil and there is a little fire spark... And whoever did the Amiga art had no Idea about the difference between Japan and China. The final spirit is supposed to be a Japanese Shogun and yet he is dressed like a Chinese noble and the art is all Chinese themed instead of Japanese. Saying Japanese is Chinese is like saying the US is Canadian or New Zealand is Australia.

    The original version was a brilliant game and had been produced for C64. Later, it seemed graphics were censored for the Amiga version due to political concerns. In Amiga, enemies were not designed like NY police officers anymore. The Evil of the Twin Towers was not a white ninja anymore in the final level. The game character's body shape was chubby, and he ran slowly. Also, his face and mimics were like a stupid guy in the right corner. It seemed some had forced System 3 to humiliate the Commodore version and take revenge on it by producing the Amiga version.

    This game shouldn't be released in this state. The controls are crap. The collision with objects is bigger crap - You can't quite often do an action or grab item even if You stand on it. The ninja stucks many times - on grass, on other enemy, on other objects even if on the first look he shouldn't. Sometimes it is hard to hit enemy with weapon even if it seems to be 100% shot. I wouldn't been able to hit enemy with shurikens on straight diagonal line.
    There is no much You can do to avoid being hit - sometimes it is just a fluke - an enemy stands in a position You can hit him, but he only misses.
    Even with map, many objects are not flashing.
    I have seen a part of C64 walkthrough and I can't say that C64 is so much better at above aspects. But it was only short fragment so I can be wrong here.

    • @ryszardadamus4241
      @ryszardadamus4241 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Made a progress... You only need to kill only few enemies and the last one. The rest you can avoid.
      And all enemies have a blind spot - if You take a proper position they will only be walking forth and back, and not attacking. They can be attacked though. But the life can be lost trying to get this position.
