The Last Ninja series on the Commodore 64 was nothing short of legendary; if you were into games during the 1980s then I can't see how you could NOT have heard of them.
As is the way, various studios converted the Last Ninja games to the Amiga computer, with varying degrees of success. Although a lot of people would argue that they were never as good as the C64 versions, I believe that, in Last Ninja Remix, we have the exception to the rule.
Firstly, this is not the same as Last Ninja Remix that featured on the C64 (Last Ninja 2 with a new music score). Last Ninja Remix for the Amiga is actually the original game, but designed to take advantage of the Amiga's superior graphics and sound capabilities.
The graphics and gameplay made the transition well in this version, but it's the music that really steals the show here. Jochen Hippel took the original, brilliant score by Ben Daglish and Anthony Lees and gave us a superb Amiga version of all the classic tunes; The Wilderness (level 02) sounds particularly amazing on a decent set of speakers!
The game has it's faults for sure. The jumping sections are really hard and there isn't much depth to the combat, but even with faults, the game is still a classic.
So, sit back and crank the volume up to 11 and enjoy!!

I loved my C64 an The Last Ninja, but when I saw Ninja Remix for the fist time, this was the moment when I decided to buy an Amiga.
Now, sometimes I'm bored with my PS4 and miss the late 80's and early 90's games.

16 bit isn't always automatically better
Wizball was far better on the C64 as was Outrun. Outrun was a mediocre conversion on the C64, but it was a complete SHIT conversion on the Amiga

Everything is relative. At that time, this music quality sounded like heaven. It sounds now a bit raw, but somehow I can still find some optimistic elements in this music. The music creator was a genius, that he could create so strong feelings with such a nowadays primitive equipment. I'm still listening in awe to this music ... It's weird.

    • @gavrielpapas773
      @gavrielpapas773 ปีที่แล้ว

I'm not an expert in musicology. But the this music is still a masterpiece. I would say that it's a mixture of pop, jazz, electro and impressionism and much more. Or maybe I'm completely wrong, we should ask a certified musicologist. For me it still sounds damn good and it's not because of its quality but because of the the optimistic value of the musical tones. It's hard to explain, but if someone doesn't have emotional feelings, he won't be able to enjoy music ever.

On the C64 in terms of Graphics and Music, but Gameplay wise it was rather clunky (even for its time!) and boring. IMO Games like Pirates, Silent Service, Maniac Mansion or Boulder Dash where FAR better games. These Games can even be fun today. Last Ninja is now terrible to play.

In all the other Last Ninja games this was done with F3 or F5, but that doesn't work on Remix for the Amiga. I am of two minds here, having played the Amiga and C64 versions, this includes the remixes. I have to say I think the music is okay, but the c64 still beats it for sheer 8bit atmosphere. The Amiga version looks much more colorful than the c64, but i honestly think that they did not do the Amiga version enough justice, no shadows, backgrounds were static (waterfall being the exception and the dragon), I would not say it did not utilise the Amiga's extra abilities that well *except the colors. Again the tunes are good, but I guess perhaps I was hoping they might make it a bit more special. Its a toughie as we have played these games over and over.
I mean if you look at First Samurai for example, the Amiga version is very atmospheric and fun to play. it has all the bells and whistles mind you. The C64 version is good, but it lacks the atmosphere of the Amiga version.
I guess I prefer the C64 version of Last Ninja's over the Amiga then, whereas First Samurai on the Amiga wins all the points vs the c64 version.
Its a tough one this, two of my favorite games that you can really enjoy with a decent sound setup on either machines.

Ok. The good? The improved graphics. More details. More colors. The Bad? Biggest issue is the fourth level. The music is misplaced, vs. the C64 version. Also, you don't fall directly between the towers here. And just to prove that I'm not unfairly targeting just one level, it's now too obvious where a previously hidden item was in stage 5, and the final boss can be beaten the same as normal enemies. The ugly? The backgrounds are still a bit too static, as commented before.

I prefer the C64 version. The SID music sounds so much better. The Amiga samples in title screen are mixed terribly. Everything is overly bright and loud, it almost hurts. Some high pass filters and balancing the volume of the tracks would have done miracles. The later tracks are a little better but there's still too much high frequencies and a lack of warmer, more melow sounds to balance the mix.

Hrmpf, why is there no edit function on Android???
Of course I meant low pass filters instead of high pass filters to reduce the high frequencies.

I agree. This is like a mediocre port of the C64 version. The graphics and music are not what I would expect from an Amiga game.

considering the amiga's hardware step up this should have looked way better.......epic on the 64 pretty average for the amiga......tunes are good still
though...apart from the creepy 64 dungeons tunes.......made that level well brown trousers lol

It's just an St port like most amiga games of this era. C64 music is better but has a real synth chip - the amiga just plays back samples..

This is the first time I have seen the Amiga version (not idea why I never got it for the Amiga) however it is a shockingly bad conversion. The music sounds way better on the c64, the hud looks better on the c64 verision, with the score and time and the ninja head. Hardware wise the machines are worlds apart, yet this looks marginally better at best and sounds worse. What a poor job.
