I believe that the Beau Brummells, dandy and close friend to Victoria’s uncle King George IV, began the three piece suit that evolved into the suit we know today. He created a style with a shirt, a jacket, pants, and some sort of neck scarf that evolved into the modern men’s tie. Before that, men’s clothing was different with breeches and waistcoats underneath overcoats.
I think some servants -- such a valets and ladies' maids -- had to be people the masters and mistresses trusted implicitly. Because their job was so intimate, they were usually regarded as friends as well as servants. Quite a fine line to walk, I'd say.

I think that is why it is not uncommon for grooms of today to choose a morning dress, if the wedding starts in the afternoon (as it usually does), although it is otherwise pretty much a forgotten dreas. It allows for a colourful waistcoat and plastron.
The funny thing is men could probably still choose to dress like Albert, when the party calls for tails. I think it would still be appropriate, as it was used in similar situations then. That would just require having a tailor do it specifically, as they aren't available off the rack.

I think you could still choose a similar dress when the etiquette calls for tails - if you can afford to have it tailormade, as it isn't available off the rack. Or at least the coat isn't, you might find the waistcoat and suitable pants. That shirt looks more comfortable than most todays shirts.
Until the Victorian era, there was really no difference between children's clothes and adults' clothes -- just smaller. The whole concept of "childhood" as we understand it today is quite recent.
What the previous commenter said is correct. There’s also the issue of child exploitation. You can show an adult in various stages of undress (even if they’re quite covered by modern standards) but you can’t do that with children. There is a dressing sequence in the 90’s version of The Secret Garden featuring Maggie Smith and something like that would just never be green lit today.

For instance, how boys had to wear short shorts all year round until they turned 11-12, or how both younger boys and girls wore the exact same dresses instead of pants, or traditional kids headwear, what babies wore to bed, girls and corsets, etc.

That doesn't differ that dramatically from todays tails/white tie. Only nowadays it isn't an every day thing anymore. (Lounge) Suits of today are quite different, and IMHO less flattering. Even the best suits are not as flattering as tails on the same man.
The actors doing these productions are great. It's interesting to contrast this performance, to the one about dressing the 18th century gentleman. The actor played that man as a arrogant fop (and he did a great job! Without a single spoken line, just body language). This actor here conveyed a very different man, one who was more personable and kind, as Prince Albert was known to be.

A fine documentary. The gentlemen suit their attire, too. A question: When did leaving the last button of the waistcoat undone come into fashion/style?
There are several theories, one being his son, Edward VII, got too stout to fasten that last button, so the court followed suit. I think guys were just more comfortable leaving it undone so it didn’t bunch up when sitting, riding, etc.
I think men’s clothing tended to be more complicated in the century before this. But then a man named Beau Brummell popularized a simpler style that would evolve into the three piece suit we know today with just a shirt, pants, jacket, and neck scarf or modern neck tie.
Interesting note about the watch chain. This sort of watch chain is actually named after Prince Albert and is called a single Albert due to there only being one side to it. A double albert would have two ends. At one end is the watch, at the other is a key for older watches though in later years men wore a double albert and kept other things attached to the key end. In the middle is often a fob, one of the few articles of men's jewelry that serves absolutely no purpose other than decorative. Fobs often indicated membership in a club, profession or military organization. With the invention of the new kind of watch that did not need to be key wound, Albert began wearing the single Albert chain named for him. I don't know if he invented the single Albert or if he simply popularized it. Probably the latter. Since he would have had the most up to date modern pocket watch he would have switched from double Albert chains to single Albert chains as soon as the keyless watch was invented and available. I am glad they accurately depicted the type of watch chain he mostly likely wore at tis time period.
Wait, if they only just started using braces, how were men's trousers held up prior to this? I rewatched the 18th century men's look and it seems like the waistband was quite tightly fitted when the front buttons were done up. Was it just that the trousers were tight enough that they wouldn't slip down with movement?

Didn't Prince Albert popularise the watch chain? I have one that goes to both waistcoat pockets known as a "double Albert". I really think it's smart and wear it every chance I get! (Not nearly enough) I have to make do with a single for everyday.
Also, it was rare for summer temps to reach 90 degrees in Britain, especially since Queen Victoria and Prince Albert holidayed in Scotland were it was much cooler or on the Isle of Wight which had a cooler environment due to it being an island, surrounded by the sea.
Then wear it. The way people will judge what you’re wearing is the same with how you judge today’s fashion. There will always be someone who judge, so who cares.

It is amazing how little formal fashion has changed for men. It's pretty similar with many changes of course but not that radical as women's has been.
and even now, at very formal occasions, men will wear tails like a weddings and orchestra players so yeah, men's fashions haven't changed...
My thoughts exactly. Except that cravat is the French word for a tie and I still often wear them. So they were not quite ditched after all.

No, there was summer outfits for ladies and gentlemen too, including clothes for hunting, shooting, fishing, golfing, cricket etc
Also, it was rare for summer temps to reach 90 degrees in Britain, especially since Queen Victoria and Prince Albert holidayed in Scotland were it was much cooler or on the Isle of Wight which had a cooler environment due to it being an island, surrounded by the sea.
This is way better than the fashion of today, I wish that I could wear such a thing without getting judged.
