Very humble series, so educational and hearing Yia Vang get emotional, talking about his family, had me emotionally hooked
Although it's easy to sensationalize unconventional meat options, you have to respect the resourcefulness of people that have found alternate food sources when faced with scarcity. Historically, some of our strongest food cultures have developed because of it. Techniques like pickling, fementing and preserving are also products of similar conditions. Certain foods were only available seasonally, so methods of storing and preserving them were necessary for survival. I appreciate Sonny's open-mindedness and respectful approach on these food tours. He may not like everything he tries, but he gives it a chance (within reasonable boundaries like not eating endangered species). You picked a great co-host for this episode. He's a treat.

just american here but I was very moved by the story of Hmong and fascinated by how they work as a community to create these dishes. America can learn a lot from this concept and way of life. I hope all these people are blessed!

Sonny, what you and your team do is beautiful, you really give the microphone to the locals you're guests of in an authentic, fun and enlightening way. What you did for Yai here in this film was beautiful, and the chemistry between you two was perfect and heartfelt! And you should be proud of your dad's consciousness. You're carrying on that spirit of peace in what you do today. I go through seasonal binges of the BEFRS, and it always feels like returning to an old friend's house, even though it's on a different continent every time! I absolutely love this one. I was one who was born in the Ban Vanai Refugee Camp. I bypass all the struggles my parents went through in Laos and their journey. This was a beautiful piece and allow me to peer into my parent's homeland. Laos is my husband's home country, he enjoys this episode so much. Reminds him of his childhood growing up in Laos.

I really love the exploration of cultural roots Chef Yia added to this series. It makes me want to go back and visit my parents homeland.
Great video ! Yia’s quote “coming to a home I’ve never been to” hits differently. His story is so similar to so many. Props to the O.G Hmong folks who came to the U.S with no money and no grasp of the English language and not only survive but thrived. In one generation there’s hmong drs, lawyers, congresswomen, mayors, successful entrepreneurs. It is sad to see some of the next generation losing not just the culture but the language. I hope videos like this will inspire young hmong people to learn about their history, culture and language. As far as food goes, southeast Asian cuisine in my opinion is the best bar none. Hmong, Laos, Vietnamese, Thai and Cambodian food is unmatched. Keep the awesome content coming !

I just stumbled on to these videos a few weeks back, I have enjoyed all that I have seen so far but this one is my favorite by far. The story of Loas is amazing by itself but seeing someone who was born here but left as a child be able to come back to where his roots are and experience what his parents and grandparents lived like is amazing, emotional, and special. Thank you!!!!!

As a long time fan of the channel, I have to say that the content gets better and better with every new country added to the mix; But there is a feature that I'd love to see added and which wouldn't take much time to implement, I'm referring to proper Subtitles and not the auto-generated ones. I'm positive that there are countless foreign viewers that will appreciate this little feature quite a bit.

This episode and the new one in Cambodia were really enjoyable to watch! I love that yours involved in harvesting the food sorces with the locals and not just doing that boring fine dining bit. Great job Sunny!

Laos are the ancestral homeland of the East Asian and southeast Asian peoples according to hundreds of genetic DNA test results from major labs around the world.
East Asian looking people living in Central Asia countries are mostly Lao and Mongolians descendants particularly in Uzbekistan they came from southern China during a Tang Dynasty.

Mind blowing how you incorporated a mans journey in discovering his roots with a food review show. Literally like how every important novel has an aspect of love in it for it to really shine. Genius. This, along with the Faroe Island episodes were the best storytelling by far.

“There’s a reason we left the motherland” made laugh so much! So real, like as much as we fall in love with our culture and where we come from we are still glad and grateful our parents left the place they did after we all grow up hearing horrible things. Just another part of being human.
One of the best episodes not because of the food but by the stories of survival of the Laosians during that senseless war.
I absolutely love watching these shows. The wilder the food the better. The most adventurous food I’ve ever tried was Thai giant water beetle. It was ground up with chilis and I put it on my stir fry dinner. Then I served it to my daughter. I didn’t tell her till after dinner. To this day she will not touch my stir fries ❤️🖤❤️🤣🤣🤣
Awesome video. I enjoy all of them from an entertainment standpoint, but I think this one was way more important. I think it really meant something to Yia to return to his homeland. You really did something truly special for him with this one. I enjoy all the co-hosts/guides, but this one was truly special.

Loatian cuisine is probably the rarest of all southeast Asian cuisines in the west. I have a few friends who are Lao and they’ve introduced me to the absolute BEST asian bowl of soup! Not pho, not ramen, not Lanzhou noodles, not tom yum, but KHAO POON! Kinda like a coconut based curried version of pho. Very spicy, but sooooo delicious delicious! And so hard to find unless you attempt to make it yourself. I accidentally came across it at a restaurant that was mainly Thai, but also had a Lao menu. Don’t you live happy accidents?

Lol, old wives tale: don’t dip sticky rice in khao poon cause it makes for weaker erections. Some Lao boys around here would say that to each other.

i'm so happy you think that way. 😊 if the restaurant was mainly thai but also had a lao menu including khao poon, chances are that the owners are most likely lao actually! it was one of my FAVORITE foods growing up as a kid in america. so comforting! lao parties with all the children would have big pots of hot and aromatic khao poon with pork blood cubes floating around. i'd grab a white bowl of that with the ladle and then another bowl of nam wan, another soup using coconut milk but sweet and colorful. my mom and i think the common singaporean laksa curry is quite similar to khao poon, however the type of noodles and toppings used in both are different.
I've been wanting to know more about Laos ever since watching King of the Hill. This is a really great episode. That was the most delicious looking rat ever, and I really really appreciate how they use every part of protein. The shrimp trap was cool! and such loving and accommodating people, they really fed you well. They deserve many donations

something ive learned from sonnys videos is that here in the US it seemswe dine on some of the least healthy foods. all the organ meats eaten in other countries provides tons of nutrients. and ten there are all the fresh veggies used, often times wild growing veggies which typically have higher niturient content.
everything in the US is processed and full of preservatives.
Both of yall have a really good screen presence, I love the content.
i have family members who are hmong and laotian. growing up i was always soooooo curious about laos/hmong culture. For many reasons i didnt get many answers that satisfied my curiosity so this is cool to be able to have access to now that im grown. some of the food shown here reminds me of the jokes my cousins would make when talking about eating with their asian side of the family hahaha but mainly it's just a reminder of how far my aunt and her parents have come/survived and how thankful i am that i got to eat some very delicious food thanks to them

Bats are really amazing fliers. I had to get one out of my cabin this past summer and it was really cool to watch it fly and not hit anything, and find it's way out an open door. Really was kinda cute.

Ever heard of awkward OVERsharing buddy?! 🤦🏼♂️ Everyone has their challenges and issues (and arguably, MUCH worse than a panic attack FFS, “get the emergency health team to come get me”, FFS! Makes me wonder - haven’t they heard of coping mechanisms where you’re from?! What a waste of resources, I don’t even call an ambulance (even if it’s free) with a *life-threatening* infection, I drive myself, because why divert resources and cost someone else’s life with a heart attack for instance, if there’s an alternative!). Bet you’d be real proud an ambulance got diverted for a panic attack while someone dies of a heart attack because of you?! Most (or at least a large proportion of us) vets (including myself) have PTSD. We don’t go around calling people to “come get us” over a panic attack, we learn coping mechanisms! SMFH! Let’s get real - a panic attack has never killed anyone that isn’t already on the verge of death, as in, any kind of cardiac disruption would finish you off, that’s a tiny minority statistically 🤦🏼♂️. So yeah folks all have issues, EVERYONE, you ain’t special (in fact, most deal with MUCH worse, just that most don’t go whining all over social media on videos completely off-topic! SMH!

I don't know why I found this so funny, but I was laughing until I had tears streaming down my face. 🤣😂🤣😂 When Sunny and his guide were speaking with the lady that cooks the bugs, it was explained how some of the ingredients (or bugs) were sourced and shipped in by plane from around the country. Sunny said "By plane?!". So, what I found ENTIRELY too funny was he said "By plane!?" there is a jump cut to a rooster at 14:03, and the rooster looked 100x more surprised than Sunny and his guide were to hear how the ingredients were sourced. 🤣😂🤣😂🤣 Again, not sure why I found this so funny... but I couldn't stop laughing at it.

@Josh-pk3vd why not cats? Dogs? 🤮 I happen to have anywhere between 7-11 cats at my house because my mother rescues them and sends them off to good people after adoption. Cats don't need as much maintenance and dogs stink and eat like hogs no matter how tiny they are..so yes to 33 🐈

Heyy Sonny id love to show you around Lithuania where i was born and raised for a good chunk of my life but i live in the uk now due to rough living in Lithuania the areas i grew up in we didnt have much money we lived off livestock and the things we grew but cities like Kaunas and Vilnius theres alot of traditional foods that will blow your mind.
I am sure rural Lithuanian food is very good. I hope to try traditional Lithuanian food one day

Laos is the destination for bizarre food. The bizarre food is not everyday food tho. They eat rice, fish, meat, vegetables just like the rest of us. The bizarre stuff are a delicacy and only eat during special occasions because cant get much.

I absolutely love bats. We used to feed the bats when I was little - threw dog food (kibble) up at them and they would catch it. I would have a hard time eating them because I considered them pets when I was little :(
