Agree, and it needs to be noted that the pressure on native species is not from first nation people, but due to western influence and practices. First nation people should not be penalised or curtailed as a result. We as Australians need to solve our terrible track record of endangerment and extinction of our native species.

I don't think that is at all similar to what you were referring to here, but your comment reminded me of that experience. Being in that environment overall was just so remarkable.

Being a Sri Lankan Tamil born in the UK, I also grew up eating something similar called Marmite. Im pretty sure the taste is very much the same and we ate it as a spread on bread or as a soup by mixing it into hot water. Its definitely an acquired taste 😂 I would like to add that the Australian aboriginal people seem very similar to Sri Lankan veddas especially. They also hunt and eat monitor lizards and sea turtles as well as sharks, rays and skates, and bush fowl. I believe they're closely related genetically.
Fun fact about indigenous Australian people. About 4000 years ago they got visitors from the Indian subcontinent who brought with them dingoes and eventually they mixed with the locals in marriages. So it’s really likely that indigenous Australian people have some distant cousins in Sri Lanka and India. I’ve had marmite before and it wasn’t bad tasting but extremely salty like straight bouillon cubes. Some day I’ll try the famous vegemite spread.
@KittyEclipse1992 Marmite is definitely disgusting to me too, I absolutely prefer Vegemite it's just so much better. They totally taste completely different not at all similar to each other and of course Vegemite is the best.

I'm so glad you finally made it over here & got to enjoy food that didn't just come out of a restaurant, another great food journey, come back anytime.
i seriously enjoyed this episode about Australia's aboriginal culture and food. we don't ever get this kind of exposure in the US without going out to find it ourselves. i appreciate it. it is very much like my own culture (the stories my parents and elder extended families' stories).
Freaking masterpiece! Why does Sonny not have a prime time show?? I would actually pay for cable if he did. All these idiotic shows on TV and here's Sonny. You're amazing!
He's said before that he doesn't want a prime time show, since that would remove some creative freedom and potentially try to spin a western view on things.
I live in Karratha and Clinton is an absolute legend with time for everyone here. So proud watching this ❤ Indigenous Australians lived for 70 thousand years without being bothered by the western world and they lived perfectly at one with the land. For those criticising just remember its likely that your heritage is what ruined their perfect harmony with earth for so long.
warfare, death, famine and disease...... harmony? Also..... the west did it first..... centuries ago , we were also tribalistic in the EXACT same way, the difference is we kept going.
@@slumdogdaz That was their culture. Azteks? Mayans? Early Asian? All forms of society at one point practiced these things. The Aboriginals grew away from that just like the rest of the world.
Thank you Sonni and team for pouring your souls in these videos, never ever I would have known about the diverse food of Australia if not for this video!
@emilyeriksson4868 and I bet your cultural choices are disturbing to others, as is your religious beliefs etc. Judging others cultural based on your own experiences in a modern western life is problematic and illogical
To everyone who sees this comment, keep pushing in life and never give up. Can't wait to see you successful one day and May God bless you!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
This is something we lack a lot of in Australia, the traditional of the aboriginals. I am a European Australian with part-aboriginal friends and relatives but we all mostly live the same modern lifestyles. It is so inspiring and valuable to see and experience the traditional methods of our indigenous people. And as always, Sonny and his team do a great job of showing the story and culture behind the food. Much love and respect.
I think these aborigines could find more sand than that to put on the food. I just couldn't see myself paying for that whole experience lol. That's just a tad bit to wild. That one kid said he hunts 6 or 7 sea turtles per year. He didn't say anything about not hunting them if they were low in numbers. At this point in my life I feel like we all came from some tribe at some point in our history so what if we all just ate whatever animals our ancestors ate wether they are endangered or not. There are so many other types of protein these people have access to. Hell the kangaroo is way over populated. I can understand if they lived in a place like the arctic or somewhere that there is limited opportunities to kill something to eat but for the people who have all sorts of options to still target an animal that could soon not be around anymore I just feel is, not selfish but it's just not necessary or even smart. Like these Asian countries who just don't care. Japan is the worst. They over fish everything and they eat everything. China as well with there "everything is traditional medicine" b.s! Yeah ok I'm american I don't understand I'm sure I'll hear but seriously we all came from somewhere. Why is my heritage not as important as someone else's? I know for a fact I'm not going to be allowed to just hunt whatever I please under the idea that I know more about the animal than you do. I understand it's not these people who made there animals endangered but we are all apart of this planet and at some point in our history we are all going to need to accept that it's up to us all to save it. The human being is the worst thing that ever happened to planet earth. We think we are special and a god created us but to me it feels like we are more like a cancer that just keeps taking killing and destroying! What God would create that? None that I ever hear about seem like they would appreciate the path humanity has taken. We just keep growing and taking away and leaving a mess in our wake.
Respect to the Indigenous culture of Australia. Thank you for sharing the traditional way of cooking fresh meat from the Aboriginal kitchen. Really, I just love this Video, I did repeat this video because it's very useful to hear the history of these great people. 🥰🥰
As a native North Borneon, from kadazan dusun tribe, I can relate with the Australian Aboriginal food culture as my fams still practicing the similar food comfort - eating wildlife animal . The younger generation think it’s too much to handle but the elderly think it’s normal.
Loved the aussie represention!! While I havent eaten some of these foods outside Roo and Emu, your exploration of them in a respectful manner was wonderful! ❤ Hope to see more australian content!! 🎉
Thank you for spending time with a tribe indigenous peoples of Australia I am indigenous Lakota I absolutely love to learn about other cultures, esp other cultures similar to my own family and ancestors. Ive ever been to Australia , Obviously ive never had kangaroo. But we do have kangaroo farms in the United States, I’ve seen the farms in Texas. But not in any grocery stores yet. I imagine it’ll take some time to get there. But as soon as i get the chance, I’ll definitely be first in line for it!!
The stuffed roo stomach is very similar to "Saumagen", a Southern German delicacy, where the stomach of a pig is filled with a farce made from offal, and then cooked to perfection in soup with added vegetables. Sounds strange, but tastes marvellous !
food is intensely tied to culture and its amazing that this is so well understood as the video is as much a lesson in aboriginal culture and their history as it is about the food they eat. all around a very informative and entertaining video to watch.

@BestEverFoodReviewShow Hey Sonny! Just watched Surviving Australia!! Catching & Cooking Their WILDEST Animals. Don’t know how I missed it as I have notifications on. This show by far, was the best show that you have produced. Not only was it informative, educational and courteous. It also brought out feelings in me that was reminiscent to the of the day when the WTC went down. I can’t describe the exact feeling, just as you couldn’t. I don’t believe there is a word for it… Somewhere between remorse and stupefied. I felt this way about the Green Sea Turtle. Bigger than hurt - offended or feeling human, much bigger.
Sonny I have watched this episode twice now! I agree with you about the turtles. My paternal grandfather was one of the stolen aboriginal children. He ended up in the UK during the Second World War. So we don't have our culture, and we don't even know where he came from. So, seeing aboriginal people keeping culture alive is incredible. It was really emotional for me to watch
Sending your family healing vibes from Canada, thank you for sharing. We had several generations stolen in a row and other good stuff here. We are still breaking the UN charter of children's rights' in 2023 but we are slowly getting better. They fucked up when they kidnapped and educated us...some of us have become damn good lawyers😂

god dang the way he explained how being like.. traditional and how they pushed through all of their hardships and are still able to push forward because they know that doing their thing just works. and how it could work for everyone or like how he said he just wanted to show people how they sustainably do everything. idk it was an unexpectedly philosophical look on the world, i loved it :3
People rly mad about the turtles. Yea they are cool and beautiful animals. But they are not over hunting many people have traditions theirs just has turtle hunting. Y’all need to stop being butthurt😂😂😂. And don’t be like they are endangered they can’t do that. Are they over hunting? No. So chill.
I’m mad and butthurt about the turtles. With species conservation, every animal and their future offspring counts. They are magnificent creatures and while their consumption is steeped in tradition I believe the aboriginal people should forgo that tradition in favour of conservation.
@@Darby0642 They're literally engaging in conservation by hunting the turtles in limited numbers and for specific reasons. They managed to keep animal populations stable for millennia, but European farming and economic practices ruined the ecosystem and have led to us becoming the species extinction capital of the world.
I have been watching your vids for over a year or 2 now I got to say that the quality of the videos are as good as the discovery channel ones. Keep up the good work
Great video! I was fortunate enough to live and work all through North Queensland in my 20’s and got to experience so much great food and indigenous culture. Lived in Townsville and one of the first jobs I ever did as an up and coming engineer was to help monitor local dugong populations and help try and rehabilitate their feeding areas all off the coast. Hopefully their population comes good again and the indigenous cultures can enjoy for generations to come
Thanks for sharing such a beautiful and private moment of your lives. Makes me think about my boys and our grandkids, and when they were born. Life’s most precious moments. Congratulations!
I agree… I’ve seen so many episodes of this show and other shows and I feel bad about animals being killed and eaten; but the sea turtle made me really sad and emotional.

Love this epison with australian indigenous! It brings me back there and I'm glad their eritage won't get lost in time thanks to video like this one!
I'm an Aussie & I'd have to say the best meal I have ever had is fresh mudcrab I caught myself, with home brewed beer I made myself, followed by a bottle of Bundy Rum I bought myself from the nearest bottelo. I'm so glad you finally made it over here & got to enjoy food that didn't just come out of a restaurant, another great food journey, come back anytime.
🤦🏼♂️
Sounds delicious. Heck, mud crabs over there are huge! One could probably fill you up.
i seriously enjoyed this episode about Australia's aboriginal culture and food. we don't ever get this kind of exposure in the US without going out to find it ourselves. i appreciate it. it is very much like my own culture (the stories my parents and elder extended families' stories).
Freaking masterpiece! Why does Sonny not have a prime time show?? I would actually pay for cable if he did. All these idiotic shows on TV and here's Sonny. You're amazing!
He's said before that he doesn't want a prime time show, since that would remove some creative freedom and potentially try to spin a western view on things.

whats stopping you from buying their merch? they give you the show for free, support them directly instead of through 3rd party cable providers
@@RichardCranium321You don't know if they have or not lol
We've got a serious problem. If more diplomats were like individuals LIKE this, we would have ZERO problems. People like this are the coolest.
I live in Karratha and Clinton is an absolute legend with time for everyone here. So proud watching this ❤
Indigenous Australians lived for 70 thousand years without being bothered by the western world and they lived perfectly at one with the land.
For those criticising just remember its likely that your heritage is what ruined their perfect harmony with earth for so long.
That land was stolen fair & square mate.
warfare, death, famine and disease...... harmony? Also..... the west did it first..... centuries ago , we were also tribalistic in the EXACT same way, the difference is we kept going.
@@slumdogdaz That was their culture. Azteks? Mayans? Early Asian? All forms of society at one point practiced these things. The Aboriginals grew away from that just like the rest of the world.
Everything about this land just has so much unique character, including the people, that's what made this series so good!
Thank you Sonni and team for pouring your souls in these videos, never ever I would have known about the diverse food of Australia if not for this video!
Much love from Fiji 🇫🇯
Tradition and Culture is always paramount for Indigenous people ❤
The people saying that this is unethical are the same people to be ignorant to where their mcdonalds comes from.
I am 48 and I have never eat at MC.I only cook at home. This video is very disturbing
@@emilyeriksson4868the fact that the meat ur cooking came from tortured animal is very disturbing
Probably liberal and woke to.
That’s nonsense. Don’t be a clown. We know exactly where McDonald’s comes from, they tell us. It doesn’t come from roadkill.
@emilyeriksson4868 and I bet your cultural choices are disturbing to others, as is your religious beliefs etc. Judging others cultural based on your own experiences in a modern western life is problematic and illogical
One of my favourite shows, thanks for coming to Australia Sonny!
Love how you keep it real!Great stuff!
To everyone who sees this comment, keep pushing in life and never give up. Can't wait to see you successful one day and May God bless you!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I needed this, thank you ❤
Same to you Michael ❤️
Don’t tell me what to do!!!🤨
God bless you too 🙏
This is something we lack a lot of in Australia, the traditional of the aboriginals.
Totally agree with you mate - cheers.
Yes the traditional pickup truck shining method! Always amazed at how genius the ancestors were at hunting such a tricky animal!
We just keep growing and taking away and leaving a mess in our wake.
i agree we should all get to eat sea turtle not just them its unfair
Thank you for exploring the real Indigenous Australia. You've just gained another subscriber. ♥️
Respect to the Indigenous culture of Australia. Thank you for sharing the traditional way of cooking fresh meat from the Aboriginal kitchen. Really, I just love this Video, I did repeat this video because it's very useful to hear the history of these great people. 🥰🥰
I have nothing but respect for the indigenous people, and how they hunt!
Also for Sonny, for showing us.
As a native North Borneon, from kadazan dusun tribe, I can relate with the Australian Aboriginal food culture as my fams still practicing the similar food comfort - eating wildlife animal . The younger generation think it’s too much to handle but the elderly think it’s normal.
.. Its Ir-- BAD KIDS LOSE TRADITION a Culture
Loved the aussie represention!! While I havent eaten some of these foods outside Roo and Emu, your exploration of them in a respectful manner was wonderful! ❤
Hope to see more australian content!! 🎉
If you get the chance, try croc... you'll thank me after.
Thank you for spending time with a tribe indigenous peoples of Australia
I am indigenous Lakota
I absolutely love to learn about other cultures, esp other cultures similar to my own family and ancestors.
Holy their production is ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
The stuffed roo stomach is very similar to "Saumagen", a Southern German delicacy, where the stomach of a pig is filled with a farce made from offal, and then cooked to perfection in soup with added vegetables. Sounds strange, but tastes marvellous !
Been here since the start and this may be my favorite series of them all, im an American but this series made me love Australia.
food is intensely tied to culture and its amazing that this is so well understood as the video is as much a lesson in aboriginal culture and their history as it is about the food they eat.
all around a very informative and entertaining video to watch.
Honestly Sonny is the most respectful youtuber I have seen so far. he even gives a history of the food and people in a non judgmental manner.
Sunny this is one of the best programs I've ever watched on youtube. Thank you so much for not only showing us the food and the history but the actual history of the people it is very amazing how you teach people in these shows good for you man I love it keep it up.
This show is full of wisdom, not just food.. Kudos again BEFRS team!🙌🏻
Incredible! Sonny, love your ability to introduce various perspectives in the most holistic way (food production, environmental impacts, traditions, cultural angles, and do so with appropriate humor). Your team's hard work is showing!
Thanks for supplying us with sick content regularly!!
I feel like I haven't seen him all summer..... The algorithm and all I suppose?!?!
No thanks for that.
The funny part is I have no issues with eating snapping turtle and other turtles like that but the sea turtles are so beautiful it would have bothered me as well. I have sooo much respect for you and your channel. I want to say thank you for what you do. Please don’t ever stop what you do. Your channel is not just entertaining but it is educational. You ,your cohosts, your wife, and staff do so much for educating the world about other cultures. I have been a subscriber for years and hope to be for many many more years. Again Thank You for all you do!!!
I love Scott!!! Lol he is funny as sh#t! You need to bring him on other shows, he tells you how he really feels no holding back!!!!
As a chef im always looking to learn the authentic cooking methods and recipes before anything else is done to modify it..... so i would like to thank you for bringing me valuable knowledge i would never get from a book or working in any kitchen anywhere .... love this channel ... if anyone disliked this they need to get some perspective and broaden their minds... great job sonny and his team
Thank you your doco… it’s a real pleasure to see the country I live in showcased professionally with the essence of our food culture most will never get to try. We as Australians and indigenous have world class food that is so underrated
, but you showed it unbiased and made it about the experience 🎉 looking forward to watching more of your programs
Thank you sooooooo much for making such incredible episode for viewers. It's so amazing to see the wilderness of Australia and you certainly had brought us with you on this impossible journey 🙏👍🏻🥳👏🏻

Im from Tassie and everytime I see my home island talked about on large channels it makes me happy. Thank you for coming down here and making an awesome video!
Amazing series again, beautifully documented. Well done mate! 🇦🇺
Awesome!!! This is the real Australian gastronomy where food and culture are in perfect harmony. Respect to my aboriginal mates. So pure and raw,. One of my bucket list would be the roo tail.
He is very humble and shows respect to everyone anywhere he goes. Much respect. And his willingness to try some foods I would probably be scared to eat . 😅 thanks Sonny. 😊
Love the representation of the aboriginal people, there’s so much I have learned just in this video
Respect to that speech you gave about that turtle 🙏🏼 Respect to you 🫡 Felt the authenticity
No matter the types of food that differs from every region I just love how you Respect every regional foods and the tribal foods and the way you elaborate each cuisine for the viewers..❤️❤️❤️
Lots lof love Sonny from Nagaland..!!!
This series is cool, day off and the best ever food review show, lif3 is good 😂
Yup

I feel you Sonny about the turtle it just hit different.
I think it's because it's a good looking dosill turtle, and it's Krush from Nemo
Lived in Australia my whole life and he's teaching me more about my own country then i ever learnt at school 😀😀
amazing... i truly envy your job and the things you get to see and experience. You always deliver great content and a big thumbs up to the entire team.

My 6 yr old is a HUGE Sonny fan and we watch this together. He is so outgoing and open because of this show. We hunted down frogs legs when he was 4 because he wanted to try it because of these shows. He has been planning world travels and it's a big part of his personality. Thanks guys ❤
would like to see you do more towards australia because most of us aussies dont ever go out to eat bush food like you just did theres so much more to try
The other TH-camr did that just before this series. Why would he do the same..
This is not just a food vlog channel but more about culture and history!
-- *_It would be such an honor to share companionship and meals with Native Australians!_*
This is truly your best show so far. Please do more like this 🙏.
I previously worked in an Australian media company and fell in love with Australia's culture, particularly its beautiful wildlife and breathtaking places
I would love to try all this, but I have a huge issue with flies. If one lands on my food I just can't eat it anymore. 1st world problems @_@
I hear you! If I was starving probably would be different.
Sonny my man, we are the smallest continent, not one of the largest - Keep it movin mate :)
Top 7 that's pretty good 😂
I avoided your channel first, became a regular in time and now after this episode…… I feel you are a better version of A. Bourdain. The same depth of content but much more positivity :) best food shows personality ! Thanks man ! Please visit Poland by the way !
god dang the way he explained how being like.. traditional and how they pushed through all of their hardships and are still able to push forward because they know that doing their thing just works. and how it could work for everyone or like how he said he just wanted to show people how they sustainably do everything. idk it was an unexpectedly philosophical look on the world, i loved it :3
Good on the boys. They know what they’re doing! Turtle or not… live and let live. Allow these people to live as they always have.
That turtle part had me tearing up 🥲
People rly mad about the turtles. Yea they are cool and beautiful animals. But they are not over hunting many people have traditions theirs just has turtle hunting. Y’all need to stop being butthurt😂😂😂. And don’t be like they are endangered they can’t do that. Are they over hunting? No. So chill.
Not mad about the turtle... Just shocked that... Of all things... The turtle is gonna make him go Vegan😂
I only eat chicken because their brains are tiny hence less intelligent 🤓.
Are traditions more important than the existence of these animals. No
I have been watching your vids for over a year or 2 now I got to say that the quality of the videos are as good as the discovery channel ones.
Hopefully their population comes good again and the indigenous cultures can enjoy for generations to come
over hunting
Being from the UK I've tried Vegimite and I think Marmite tastes way better but it's a 'love or hate it' thing so each to their own.
Thanks
Thanks for sharing such a beautiful and private moment of your lives. Makes me think about my boys and our grandkids, and when they were born. Life’s most precious moments. Congratulations!
I agree… I’ve seen so many episodes of this show and other shows and I feel bad about animals being killed and eaten; but the sea turtle made me really sad and emotional.
top tier cooking show featuring great culture and travel.. thanks for the hard work and great content!
I don't even know how you haven't been awarded an honorary Anthropology degree. Your work is invaluable in spreading culture.
This is an evolution of culture. It's not traditional indigenous culture
@@joelmurray7004 and your point is?
