This is one of your finest episodes yet, and I believe I've watched them all. So far Sonny has explored: Balinese people, some Papuan people (they have thousands of different tribes that speaks languages that may not be intelligible to each other), and then this time, Batak (Karo - there are many tribes of Batak) people, Badui people, Acehnese people, Medan people, Bugis people, Torajan people.
He is not yet exposed to our "maintstream" Indonesian like Padang, Palembang Malays, East Javan, Sundanes, Dayak people, Madurese, Sumbawans, Kupang, Manadoese, Moluccans, welp, the list goes on and on. I have to apologise if you feel excluded. It is a diverse country that you don't just brag about, but get overwhelmed, confused, and then shocked to find that they suddenly speak Indonesians too. Yeah, these are just "mainstream" culture in a way that we have their foods are easily available everyday, in most of Indonesia's major cities for mobile phone app delivery order.
Vladimir Putin once laughed at his agriculture minister for suggesting to export pork to Indonesia - because we by statistic are Muslim-majority nation, But if you look at the details, we have more pork eaters than the entire Scandinavian countries combined. You just don't presume about Indonesia. I lived here for more than 30 years already, stepped on all the 5 major islands, Sumatra, Kalimantan, Java, Sulawesi, Papua, but I still know nothing. It is much much much culturally and culinarily richer than many people assumed.

How do you always know what to ask? It's amazing to me your instinctual questioning. The manaynay must have been so awkward as an outsider. Fascinating ritual.
There is not a single person who has ever gone into tribe life as animated as you are. I have a hard time getting my kids to watch videos with me, but they'll watch yours because your line of questioning is very simplistic and easy to follow. Your narrations are perfect for a wide variety of watchers.
I mean this documentary showcases your considerable respect and the unique perspective you are able to give your viewers and those you interact with. Would I have watched a documentary on a variety of tribes? Possibly. Maybe for a bit. Because it's always fascinating to see how others live. But would kids? No. But they'll watch you. There's something to be said there.

Hi i'm from Australia. I started going to Indonesia with my parents in the 80's. They were not very strict or protective of me
(tbh they only cared for my brothers, i was worthless to them) I would make friends with the locals and would go out with them often alone. I remember often going to funerals watching the cane caskets burning , dancing, singing and celebration and being sent out to sea on fire.. My parents sheltered my brothers. I saw the real world as you are experiencing. Who is richer for this experience. Us i say Sonny.

This is the first time I've seen any people anywhere doing this. The pigs and buffalos and all the foods are great to watch. But the death rituals and the implied love for family members who have passed are so unique and interesting to see.
