    Man, I feel like Shapr3D is the most innovating software to hit the CAD space in 2 decades. I’m serious on this. That team is just killing it and the new Mac updates compliment the iPad Pro perfectly.

    I'm really hoping that Umake Devs watch this fantastic comparison video and up their game by adding all of the things missing he spoke of...because I gotta be honest, with the sketch feature, Umake is so much more enticing and versatile in that regard. Please watch this video Umake and up your A game and rise above Shapr. If that happens, I know where ALL of my money is going!

    as someone who uses Shapr 40+ hours a week in the entertainment industry there are some things I would of included in your video. Namely Shapr desperately needs a box selection tool and non-uniform scaling. In a few designs I've reached upwards of 400+ bodies and while sorting them in separate groups is all well and good, selecting each of those objects to put in a group is a pain. For non-uniform scaling and adjusting objects, I either have to cut the object into two halves and combine them after making adjustments or I will have to export to another CAD application like Fusion, which does support non-uniform scaling. This isnt a critique of your video so much as it is wanting the developers to take notice and implement changes that people (and myself) have been asking for for years.

    Been using Shapr3d and for what you 'can' do in it, it's awesome. Most intuitive 3d modeling app I've ever used. However, it seems like for every thing that Shapr3d does well, or better...there's always obvious features that are missing....such as the ability to lock layers or layer groups.

    Good overview. I came to the same conclusion. Never the less I subscribe to both. Pioneers in real 3D applications for iOS and it is important that both live. Having the choice and the fact that the developers keep an eye on each other benefits users. The prices are within tolerable levels and compared to all the subscription fees one pays (I purchase from several desktop app developers in this category of apps). The benefit of mobility is worth it when rigging up initial ideas. And we should not forget that Shapr3D utilizes Parasolid from Siemens and has to pay forward. If there are good imp/exp options, those apps will only become more important in the workflow as they mature.

    • @alejmc
      @alejmc 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly, comment of the day. I really hope uMake doesn’t lose steam and continues to push forward. Even if it has to make breaking changes or find the right domain... mobile devices are still open for Maya/Max/C4D/Blender/etc style of modeling, Rhino/CAD/etc style of modeling (what these two seem to be doing) and Houdini procedural style content creation. As a potential user I like to see how everything might have already started!

    • @gd7681
      @gd7681 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Verto studio is an even earlier pioneer. It seems quite capable even now tbh. Works like a basic Blender. It even has a free mac version. It’s kinda sad that nobody knows about it.

    • @alejmc
      @alejmc 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      G D then let’s get that ball rolling, “basic blender” is quite the statement. Will give this a try.
      However I really think it will all soon come to an end... Mac Intel/ARM and iOS/iPadOS being unified in not long, even Maya running at great performance on a Mac with a sort of a handicapped iPadPro (because of virtualization), means that in not long all those applications will be able to run on tablets, desktops, phones with the developer doing mostly the work for a single platform (UI/UX will still be a big chunk to adapt though).

  • @nickpunt
    @nickpunt 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Very useful, thanks! Especially good was going into the usability details, since 3d modeling already has a learning curve and most 3d apps don't do this well (hi SketchUp). In theory I really like the idea of a whiteboarding tool that can progressively enhance to 3d model, as you demo with uMake. Making things 3d isn't always necessary when working on ideas, but its nice to be able to grow into it if you need it. Hope Shapr can expand scope to support that.
    I'd love to hear your thoughts on how the keyboard and mouse capabilities of iOS 13.4+ work with these tools. The best part of using iPad really is its versatility, and that's potentially fantastic for 3d since sometimes you need to use keyboard commands or type in precise info, sometimes draw freeform, and sometimes directly manipulate with touch. Notability comes to mind as a tool that understands this well - it doesn't treat the pencil and touch exactly the same, but instead biases touch toward zoom/scroll/pan and pencil toward drawing/selecting. A lot of iPad apps don't understand this distinction however.

    • @marvelousdecay
      @marvelousdecay  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey Nick. You hit the nail on the head. Unfortunately both applications don't use the keyboard at all for shortcuts. Here it doesn't annoy me as much as in other applications like vector and photo editing apps but I could still see the workflow improving even with just a couple of shortcuts for the frequently used tools.
      As far as pencil and touch you will be pleased to hear that Shapr is treating them differently and I absolutely love that. Touch is used for the navigation and tapping on commands and the pencil for everything else. It works really really well!

    • @nickpunt
      @nickpunt 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@marvelousdecay Ah nice, good to see Pencil support is well understood. I can see keyboard as less useful than other diagramming apps as you say but still would be nice to have especially if they go more into whiteboarding. Thanks again!

    Unfortunately i have not seen this video before i have payed for UMake subscription. And i was not able to understand UMake to create any reasonable complex thing for my 3D printing projects. Later i have payed for Shap3r subscription, and done quite a few of thing, easy and fast.
    In my opinion UMake may be good to design some free form sketches that never should become a physical object. By if you need a physical body to print or produce other way - UMake is far away to be useful.
    But Shap3r is great one.

    It’s been a year sense you’ve made this video. Has uMake better strides in the modeling software portion? I see they have a one time payment for a lifetime purchase which makes it desirable over shapr. I feel as if shapr offered that incentive for us hobbyists which also included the ability to make 2d drawings a lot of us would be jumping on that purchase.

    • @marvelousdecay
      @marvelousdecay  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Unfortunately the last time I checked not much has changed so Shapr is still the better solution. It's gonna be difficult for uMake to revise modeling because they have to most likely scrap most of their code and start from scratch. That's tough to do. At least I assume that's the case.

    If you actually want to model on iPad, get Shapr3D.

      What if you want to model on PC, do you have any suggestions by any chance?

    • @luisvenegas6165
      @luisvenegas6165 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@escape2204 on pc it depends a lot on the kind of modeling. SketchUp/Rhino are good for achitecture. Fusion3D/FreeCAD are good parametric modelers. Blender is the best for surface modeling.

    Does Shapr3D offer a trial without demanding a credit card number?

    • @pastpianist
      @pastpianist 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It does not. If you’re unsure, just pay for a month then cancel

      @jamslut 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@pastpianist I don't think so. I won't pay a penny for something I can't test out first.

      @Mike You can actually try out the whole application without paying. The only thing disabled will be the exporting options, the ability to give colours to your models and to import images for references. But all modeling operations and everything else is available to try out without a subscription.
