Selecting baby Koi in Japan | Kohaku selection guide [SENBETSU]

  • We are selecting baby koi of the Kohaku variety at Japanese breeders. In this video you will learn more about how young kohaku baby koi are selected. Why are some kohaku selected, and other baby koi are not selected. Why breeders especially focus on pattern at this moment and why this is the most important aspect to select on.
    We are selecting at one of the larger small baby koi ponds of the Marudo Koi Farm, where we select almost 100.00 baby Koi.
    A breeder must select his baby Koi. Mainly because he just doesn’t have enough space to grow out all the small kohaku to larger Koi that he will be able to sell. That are just too many Koi to grow up. It is impossible to maintain good water quality with such large numbers of Koi. Well this is doable when the koi are only 2 or 3 cm in size. But when they grow, and they grow really quickly, it becomes impossible. And a breeder wants to make sure that his baby koi can grow as well as possible, under the best conditions. So each round he will selected the best Koi with the most potential in his eyes.
    The average of Kohaku baby koi selected during the first round is around 10%. So only 1 out of 10 kohaku baby koi are selected and can continue to grow towards the next round. Which will be in around 2 or 3 weeks later. Again a selection round is then performed by the breeder. Luckily on average more Koi can be selected during the second round.
    On which aspects are small kohaku baby koi selected? Body posture is at this stage not the most important factor. For now the breeders just wants to make sure the Koi is complete regarding body aspects. What is way more important is their pattern. Or at least the potential pattern for the future. At this age it is basically impossible to determine if a Koi has a good or a little bit worse pattern, and how the pattern exactly will develop in the upcoming period.
    Kohaku that do have a unclear pattern, for example because it is entirely white or entirely red, will not be selected. Breeders especially look for technical aspects in the pattern during the first senbetsu. This includes the the following aspects:
    • The red pattern preferable does not cover the entire head. And at the same time, the head should also not be entirely white. So there should be red visible on the head, just not covering the entire head.
    • Preferable the red markings on the head lay in-between the eyes.
    • The belly must be white.
    • The nose should be white and around the head or the bottom of the head white is visible.
    • Also the tail should be white, and the last part of the body just before the tail starts should be white as well. We call this an ‘Odome’
    • All fins should be white, not displaying any red that can develop.
    • There must be small steps in the pattern, or indications that white will come up in-between the red markings.
    It is for young baby kohaku not mandatory that all these technical criteria are met. Instead it is totally fine when some criteria are not matching, as long as most of them are. Remember that this is just the first selection round. And it just is really, really difficult to determine when a Koi is only 4 weeks old how it will develop in the upcoming months. So when a breeder has doubts, he will most likely select the Koi and check again in a few weeks what happened during the development.
    After selection, the Koi are released again in the mud ponds. There they will be given some time to grow larger before the next round of selection will start. Many Koi breeders in Japan select their Kohaku 4 or 5 times in the first year.

    A friend of mine is a koi dealer. He usually travels to Japan to buy koi and everytime he comes back I ask him what'll happen to the unchosen ones but never have at least one vivid answer from him. Now I understand. It's clearly such an unpleasant experience since we both love these colorful fish from the day they're born till the day they grow old and die.

      Take in mind this happens in the first few selection rounds, depending on the variety. After the first few rounds all koi are kept and sold to customers as low class up to higher class koi. The higher class koi are of course kept for a longer period at the koi farm, to grow them larger.

      Most 4 week old Kohaku that are not selected by the breeder will become fishmeal in the end... perhaps a little bit sad to hear. But on the other hand it would be impossible to grow them all under good conditions: now the breeder makes sure he offers the best conditions for all the selected ones. Some breeders do take them apart though.

      @@ColonelKlink100 red does not always become stronger, but it should become stronger indeed. It doesn't really go away if it is on the head - but this most probably is not 'hi' as we would like to see it develop into a tancho/maruten. • @Aboutkoi
      @Aboutkoi  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      As it is not possible for the breeder to grow all hundred thousands of small baby Koi, he needs to select them to decrease stocking of the mud ponds and provide more space and better conditions for the selected ones. The ones that are not selected often will most likely become fishmeal.

  • @llz7033

    some breeders produce all-red koi(紅鯉), are they deliberately selected or just mistake?

    • @Aboutkoi
      @Aboutkoi  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most probably this is benigoi, just like these: th-cam.com/video/z2dpl_RqSNs/w-d-xo.html. The breeder is trying to breed them, as it is a variety. It can also happen that during kohaku breeding (almost) entirely red Koi are produced, but normally these are not passing the selections. Thanks for your question!

      Most important is green water and algue for availability of zooplankton, in order to have food available for baby Koi in the first days. This is also necessary for example to have daphnia available in the ponds, nutrition for small baby Koi as well.

    SO if some one contacted the Breeder. Who lives in another country. With a view at buying 4 boxes of the unselected on the first cull. What would the Breeder's response be. ????
    If they were sold as weight or as a count.
    There is a way to view a Breeder who would rather mince net fulls of small koi.
    OK for example.......
    I have paid £10,000 per box plus
    Cost of transportation to Gatwick/Heathrow.
    Now I have the cost to heat feed pools.
    There would be some that wouldn't make the journey or the first few weeks. Each one that survived has to pay for the total cost and loss.
    On we go again and again.
    There will be more cost more loss.
    At the point of the sale of any that your be allowed to sale. I say this because if you start with 100,000.
    Then at the first cull your looking for 10% to grow on 10,000 and so on to the point where youay have a grand champion 🏆. You may have killed 80% of the first 10,000 from you first Harvist.
    This explains you your wife/girlfriend are always saying how much was that fish.
    It's Japanese pride that stops the prices drop

    • @Aboutkoi
      @Aboutkoi  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's correct indeed what you are saying. It will by the way be a higher percentage than the 80% you mention that will not become 'high quality' most likely

    If koi is eliminated, do the Japanese people continue to feed and then select them again or discard them?

    • @Aboutkoi

      That depends on the breeder. Usually for first selection round all are discared. During 2nd some breeders do take them apart to grow them slightly more and sell them as 'mass' / low quality koi.

      Hi Kevin, the breeder can't. That's why only the ones that do display a pattern are selected. All white or completely red ones are for example discarded, since they show no possible pattern. Every Kohaku baby Koi that does potentially show a pattern is selected.
