  • My first night out exploring Wroclaw and I already fell in love with this city. I found this great old fountain by the river. Then I stopped and ate some delicious Georgian food. It's something that I never tasted before and it was soo good. I went back out later in the evening and came across this magnificent building, which I thought was a Church. It's actually a library and looks like something out of a movie. Then I got my first look at the Old Town Square of Wroclaw. Such a fun day here in Wroclaw, this city is amazing.

The fountain with lions is about Hercules. The food is Georgian not Polish. "Konspira" is about the Solidarity movement of 1980's. The flowers in the "salt square" (in Polish the name of the square is a neutral adjective of "salt" and then "square") are sold 24/7 every day of a year (winter/summer you name it). The name of the pub "złoty pies" means "golden dog" but it has nothin to do with the currency. The currency is a masculine adjective of the noun "gold" in its singular form and non-human-masculine in its plural form. We have three different versions of every adjective in its singular form (muscular, feminine and neuter) and two in its plural form (human-masculine and non-human-masculine). Long story short - only boys/men have a special version of the adjective/pronoun (same problem) in its plural form. For dogs, castles, girls, etc it is the same. Market square is one of the two biggest ones in the world (the Polish city of Kraków is the other one). And I'm sure I forgot something ...

definatelly must continue your trip to University main building and then go to Ostrów Tumski. Later Hala Stulecie near zoo. And also recomend night walk on the old town and few islands on the reiver like Wyspa Słodowa czy Wyspa Piaskowa. Wrocław is the most beautoful polish city at night.

one more pronunciation note: you saw this: ‘plac bohaterów getta’, which middle word you pronounced something like ‘bohaterOV’ (using capitals to denote stress). an ‘o’ with that little accent thing is pronounced like ‘oo’. that’s one tip. another tip is about which syllable gets stressed. in Polish it’s typically the penultimate (second-last) syllable that gets the stress. so ‘bohaterów’ would be pronounced something like ‘bohaTERoof’ (as that ‘v’ becomes indistinguishable from an ‘f’ sound). ...the first word, which you just spoke as ‘plaza’, is pronounced something like ‘platz’. and with ‘getta’, the only thing you have to remember is that two consonants together don’t become like one sound. here there are two distinct ‘t’s, one right after the other. ‘plac’ has a meaning very similar to the English ‘place’, but an even better word is ‘square’ (as in town square). ... the entire phrase means ‘the square of the heros of the ghetto’.

true, but keep in mind that between 900AD and 1700-s Wroclaw was populated predominantly by Poles. After 1741 and later, alongside with partition of Poland the Prussian/German influences changed this the other way. Truly the XIX century was the next great growth of Wroclaw. The incoming industrial evolution and Prussian focus on this area speed up this process. Great city with great history. Worth to note all the great citizens of Wroclaw regardless of their nationality.

@@HCforLife1 And don't forget about Czech trace in history of Wroclaw, they even have Czech lion in coat of arms which is really cool that it stayed there for like 700 years. 🙂 I don't like that people who are saying "it was everything German before" because they are trying to steal our history, it was not that simple, firstly - it was not always German and secondly - Germany didn't even exist as united nation and country.
When some people say "Charles IV was German, so Germans ruled you in middle ages" I am really annoyed by this uneducated nazi-like opinions, he was even Czech king, his mother was from old Czech Přemyslid dynasty, he was our legal ruler, not a German invader. Some people just totaly have no idea what was going on here before 20th century which is really annoying, they are stealing our history by saying everything was German. I know that Poland had pretty different history than we had, but I see those people who are trying to steal your history also on internet.

about the pronunciation of the word ‘złoty’: the last part, ‘ty’, (also: ‘ty’ = the informal ‘you’) is pronounced like ‘tip’ without the final ‘p’. now for the first part, ‘zło’. the ‘Z’ is the same as in English. but the ‘ł’ letter (an ‘L’ with a line through it) has no ‘L’ sound in it whatsoever. it’s pronounced like an English ‘W’. and the ‘o’ is rather like the English ‘O’ in ‘pop’ (certainly not like the ‘O’ in ‘pope’). with these things in mind, I’d anglicize ‘złoty’ as ‘zwoti’. (and to be clear, not like ‘zwotee’). anyway, hoping this is useful :).
