Steve I literally just picked up one of those for the high school I teach at. I had a choice between one of the DeWalt's or two of the Porter Cables. It was definitely the right choice to go with the DeWalt. Smoother action, easier blade changes and a much quieter motor. Thanks for another great video.
Hey Steve , been scrolling for forty years , have this DW 788 model for so long I can remember . I've so many different blades and my choice is the Flying Dutchman Blades . O I did start out on the craftsman 16 variable speed for a good 10 years . My DW 788 is on the factory stand and I have a 4 foot led shop light above it about a foot from the saw . I've make usually Christmas ornaments from mine to you name all though the years . Enjoyed you video , my saw is a type 2 , only trouble with it I blew one fuse one time. .....I usually order the gross amount on blades , bigger savings , just google Flying Dutchman blades . So many utube videos - hard too watch them all . Keep up the videos ...
First off you are amazing with a scroll saw. I just purchased a wen 16" scroll saw and its been great but i need more practice. I have an 18 pack of three different plain pinned blades that work great for long straight cuts but recently started using pinless spiral blades for tight corner although they tend to make wavy cuts without slow steady control

Steve, I just came across this older video so a belated congrats as well on your new addition to the family. When you were gunning its engine it sounded similar to a 56 Bel-Air I used to have, and that's a good thing.
Congrats Steve. Nice saw and a cool project. My wife Francy loves to scroll saw. She had an old Craftsman saw and we upgraded it to the Porter Cable saw this weekend. It's a big difference. Enjoy and I'm looking forward to seeing the cool projects you will make with it.
Just curious: what's the difference between the saws that the new one is so much better? As a scroll saw neophyte, seems like as long as the blade goes up and down, there wouldn't be much difference.
+House of Hacks Hey, the old saw used pin blades. The ends of the blade had small pins through them that would mount onto the blade holders. This required you drill at least 1/4" starter holes, so limited the detail. It was also only one speed, and it's best to adjust the speed for different materials. The Dewalt is more solid and heavy and less vibration. The older saw worked fine but I wanted to do more detailed stuff and larger stuff too.

Welcome to the world of scroll sawing. Be careful, you might just get hooked! As other have stated, I would recommend waxing the table top and using Flying Dutchman blades. I personally use #3&5 ultra reverse and #3&5 spirals. Remember, the lines are just a "guide." Good luck and have fun!!!

As someone without a lot of space or my own (I have access to a nice shop, but would like to work at home instead) a scroll saw is certainly on my wishlist.
I agree on the Flying Dutchman blades. Depending on the wood and thickness, my blades range from the Ultra Reverse #1,3,5 to Spiral Flat End blades in #1, 3, 5. Been using the spiral blades more lately. Slightly wider kerf, but easier to see with my old eyes. No twisting and turning of the work piece too.
Hi Mark, Fabian's Tiny Workshop send me some to try from Germany. He said they are the same maker as the Flying Dutchman. I also have some spiral ones to try. Now that I have my stand done, I can make some fun projects and test out all the different blades. I like the idea of not turning the work piece all the time.

Very cool. Looks like a great saw. To this day, I still enjoy my scroll saw more than any tool in my shop. I use it quite frequently for a lot of our projects as well. It is a very versatile tool. Great video, Steve.

I bought the DeWalt saw about a year ago. I gotta get those comfort knobs. They're great if you're doing a big, complicated project. Anyone who is a serious scroll saw dude knows what I'm talking about. I bought a Delta electronic saw back in 1985 and it lasted for over 30 years. But I am glad to get this new DeWalt. It's not any better motorwise, but the blade changing is so much easier!!! I've used better blade changing saws before. I worked in a woodshop with the Excalibur saws. They were easy blade changing. But their top speeds were not fast enough to suit me. If you get really used to the saw, you might appreciate the extra speed that some saws have. Well, blah blah. I'm not a salesman for DeWalt. HAHA
Yeah, I really like my Dewalt. And the knob makes loosening the blades much easier. It's a good size to grab onto and the knurling is real grippy. Search for the "Lift and Click" attachment that holds the arm up while you feed the blade through a hole. It's a good helping hand.
I know this video is about 3 years old but I just assembled my saw and man is it heavy. You made it look light the way you picked up that box. It took my daughter and I both to lift it. I definitely need practice using it. If I drove the way I was scrolling, I would have killed a few people! I'm going to order your projects from Etsy and practice.

I get my Olson brand blades from Sloan's woodshop. They are great people! I use a lot of 2/0 reverse tooth skip tooth blades. For thicker stuff I use #3 or 7 Mach series from Olson as well! I would suggest to sand the table and wax it on the scroll saw. It makes wood glide so easy!
Hey Steve, I have been wanting a new scroll saw for awhile. I have the same old craftsman saw like yours with no blower. I been looking at the same Dewalt saw. Enjoyed this video a lot because I'm looking at getting the same saw because, I too, have an old old Craftsman scroll saw and don't want to have to change blades on it anymore. Congrats on the SS upgrade, Steve! I've had my 788 for about 10 yrs. and love it to death. It has thousands of hrs. on it and has yet to let me down. A couple things you may want to look into are a magnifying light and a foot switch, they make it so much more enjoyable. Another thing, when you build your stand, you may want to make the back leg(s) adjustable. I find if the back is higher and the table is tilted toward me, it's more comfortable to work. Also, Flying Dutchman blades can't be beat IMHO. Have fun, buddy!
Yep that's the best way to do it sample them all. The good people at wooden teddy bear are super friendly, small family business. Scroller on line very good people to. Oh yeah go for flat end spirals they r better than regular spirals
I have heard from some of the scroll saw clubs on TH-cam that the DeWalt 788 bearings are not well lubricated from the factory. Have you re-greased the bearings on the arms of your saw? I want to make sure that I take care of this if it is a problem before I put a lot of mileage on my DW788. I ordered a bunch of blades from BearWood I ordered about 5-6 different types but haven't used them yet. I also ordered the Pegas Chuck Head for the DW788 from BearWood but I am just getting started in scroll sawing. I need to make a teardrop peace sign for my sister's birthday next month. I am using olive wood from a tree that we had at our house since 1968. Sister is an old hippie from the 1960s so I think she will appreciate the peace sign from our old olive tree that was in the family for the past 52 years. BTW, i really like your smile when you are woodworking. I can tell that you really love your work. Thanks!

You probably saw my friend Bob from our local Gwinnett Woodworkers club talking about the bearings. I don't use my saw that frequently, so I haven't bothered getting him to service it, but at least he is nearby if it starts getting noisy. Good luck with the project and enjoy your saw!
@@SteveCarmichael Thanks. I think it was a Gwinnett video that I learned about the bearing lube issue. Like you, I will probably wait until I hear some noise, or add the lube in the rare moment that I have a couple hours of spare time. I never knew that olive wood was used for woodworking until I ordered an olive wood wooden kitchen utensil set form Israel. I love the wood and it has many interesting patterns in it. I heard that the reason it is rarely used for woodworking is because you can make a lot more money selling olives and olive oil from the olive tree than you can by cutting the tree down and harvesting the wood. Therefore, most of the olive wood used for woodworking comes from tree trimmings. This is exactly how I acquired my olive wood. My mother passed away in 2019 and we had to sell her house. I needed to trim a big branch from the olive tree before the house sold, so I saved the branch and it has been seasoning for about a year and a half. I live in California, but I used to live in Georgia back in the early 1960s. My dad was stationed at Robins AFB and we lived in Warner Robins. I had a baby sister that died there just after birth in 1962 and she is buried at the Magnolia Cemetery but never had a grave marker. Last year I worked with Magnolia to get a marker placed and I visited the grave-site and my old stomping grounds last year. I was very impressed how friendly folks from Georgia were. Very different from the people in California. I miss Georgia and the people there. (And I LOVE the peaches - had a great time at Lane Orchards) Maybe some day, I'll move there. I use either Olson or Flying Dutchman reverse tooth saw blades. Most places that sell scroll saw wood or patterns carry them, or you can find them on EBay.
Great site! After wanting a DeWalt for YEARS, I just bought the one that Grizzly has on sale! I started With a Dremel 16" that I called "Shaky Jake" , then graduated to a Dremel 18" which doesn't vibrate nearly as much, but was all I could afford at the time! . I am making a knife for my Grandson, and no matter what blade I used, It wouldn't touch the laminated material I am using for the handle! Anxiously awaiting the arrival of my new saw! I couldn't find the link for the comfort knobs, but they look to be a great addition, and I think some sort of arm lifter will be my next purchase.
Excellent video Steve! I have a cheapy from Harbor freight that works OK but I'm ready to upgrade. Dad has that D Walt and loves it! He also took off the guard. I found my workpiece hops up-and-down with the guard off but that's probably something I have to get used to. I know you just got it but if you end up trying to spiral plates I'd be interested if you like them. I'm not able to do the spiral blades on the scrollsaw I presently have.

Hey Steve Just a heads up. I noticed Steve Good mentioned covering your workpiece with blue masking tape before gluing on your template so that cutting through the masking tape extends the life of your blade by lubricating it.

Hey brother bear. I have been researching numerous scroll saws trying to find the one I want to invest in and this is the one I believe I want. I just recently got into work working and found a 80 year old craftsman for free and I was instantly hooked. Not sure about the best place for blades but I have been really intrigued by spiral blades and not needing to spin the work piece unless needed for throat clearance(my old saw a has 24" which I enjoy immensely) but heard that reverse skip tooth blade reduce the need for sanding. Sorry that's all I got in my woodworking infancy. Would appreciate any more knowledge you have. Hope you keep SMILING!
Hey Thanks!!! Wow that saw sounds really cool, especially for free! I have a hard time cutting straight lines with a spiral but they are great for random shaped cuts. I use the reverse blade a lot and it does reduce sanding to almost nothing.

I've heard that the Delta and Dewalt are basically the same saw just branded differently, so maybe they are made at the same place and the manual got switched? Hey Juan! The saw is still working as good as when I bought it. Yes it cuts hardwood fine. I've only tried 3/4" thick or less though. I've even cut metal and coins with it. You just have to find the right blade and speed combination that works best for the material.
Congrats Steve. The DW788 scroll is truly a Ferrary of the scroll saws. All you need is the Easy Lift device and the foot pedal. Both work great for scrolling big projects. Happy scrolling pal!

Hi. It's been a while, how is the DeWalt scroll saw holding up? I am thinking about buying the same model but I hear that the needle bearings are under lubricated and the saw starts knocking and vibrating. That's a lot of money for me so I thought I'd ask you how it was holding up. Great video.
The scroll saw is still working great. Most of the folks in our woodworking club have them. Bob Brokaw is in our club and he has lots of repair videos on youtube on the Gwinnett Woodworkers channel. A new saw should work for a long time, but it depends on how much you use it. I use mine about once per month, so I doubt I will ever wear it out. It was a lot of money for me too, but I was able to use gift cards and credit card reward points to help pay for it.
Steve, I have just purchased this saw and I am totally new to any type of woodworking. I have watch several videos and it seems that the actual cutting portion is sped up. Is your video showing the actual time/speed of your cutting? I am trying to figure out how fast or slow everyone is cutting. Thank you.

Steve, What kind of wrenches did you use to remove the screws from the plastic casing control speed? Please Sorry if this isn't good writen, I don't know English ok.
Hi Earl - Congrats on the new saw! It's a good one. When I move the tension lever, it usually ends up on about 3-4. If you pluck the blade with your fingernail, it should make a high ping sound. Speed usually falls somewhere in the middle. If it's too fast, you will get smoke and burning smell. If it's too slow, it takes forever to cut. I like Olsen Reverse blades. If you are making puzzle type pieces that need to fit back together with small gaps, use a thin blade size 00, 0, 1, 2. If just cutting parts out, you can use a thicker blade size 2+. In general, thinner wood can be cut with higher tpi, i.e 28tpi for a smooth cut. Thicker wood can be cut with lower tpi i.e. 12tpi but not as smooth. For hard wood, I usually use a thicker blade with low tpi. Blades are cheap so get a variety of blades with different tpi's and thicknesses and try them all out on different types of wood. If it doesn't cut easily or burns/smokes, then try a different blade. Hope that helps!
@@SteveCarmichael it certainly helps! Thank you. One other question. The blade was not centered, much closer to one side and after just a few minutes of cutting the hole for the blade is now a little wider. Is that a problem?
Hmm, that sounds odd. Check to make sure the saw table is on correctly. Sounds like it may have been shifted to one side when it was bolted on. If I'm remembering right, I think the back has a pin that holds it on so make sure the pin is in the correct spot.
Also, make sure to let the blade do the cutting and avoid pushing it to either side. If you push to the side, the blade will flex and the cut will have a curve instead of being flat. The cut should be | and not ( or ).
I'm looking at these closely. Do they use both pin end and plain end blades? I have a cache of 5 inch blades left over from my old Dremel scroll saw. It was a major PITA to change plain end blades with it.
Man i love my Dewalt 788. I use my saw daily, I have a bit of an addiction to scrolling. I can't wait to see some of your projects. I've been a fan for a while. +CodeFoxAus It's more solid and heavy, so less vibration. But the main reason is so I can use pinless blades and cut smaller openings. Also the speed control is nice to have when cutting metal, plastic, vinyl, etc. It's so quiet too. Otherwise they both cut about the same.

I inherited a Craftsman scrollsaw from my uncle (that looks identical to your old saw). My problem is that I didn't inherit the Allen wrench to release the blade and I cannot figure out the size. None of the allens I own fit. Any suggestion on the right size wrench?
+Jeff Meyer Hmm, my Craftsman 13" has a knob on top that loosens the clip thing that holds the blade. It uses pin blades, so not sure, but yours sounds different.

Hey, yes it is really worth it. I didn't believe it myself until I got it and the difference is like night and day. I went from an old Craftsman 13" to the Dewalt. It is so smooth and quiet, and the ability to adjust the speed and use pinless blades is fantastic. I got it from Home Depot on sale, plus I had a couple Home Depot gift cards that helped bring the price down for me. I have a credit card that earns points and I redeem the points for HD gift cards to buy tools. Check out Steve Good's reviews on youtube. I think he also recommends a Delta that is very similar to the Dewalt and in the same price range. Thank YOU for watching!

Yay!!! So happy you got a scroll saw so you can use pinless blades!!! I have been using ones made by Woodstock International Inc. They seem sturdy and the packages say if they are for hard or soft wood and also what thickness is recommended. :)

Nice snag Steve. I have one of the "Type 1" models and it does a great job for a non scroller like me. On the stand build. You may notice that the DeWalt stand for that saw it is built with the saw on a downward slant for ease of viewing the pattern and like you said, less fatigue. Something to consider. BTW: I like you music choices. It's relaxing. I have a difficult time with some that nerve shattering stuff some folks use. Enjoy the new tool. JimE

My preferred scroll saw blades are Olson's PGT 9RG. They leave a very smooth cut that I have never had to sand.
I have the exact one for ten plus years now its very reliable. congrats on the new toy.

Just curious: what's the difference between the saws that the new one is so much better? As a scroll saw neophyte, seems like as long as the blade goes up and down, there wouldn't be much difference.
+House of Hacks Hey, the old saw used pin blades. The ends of the blade had small pins through them that would mount onto the blade holders. This required you drill at least 1/4" starter holes, so limited the detail. It was also only one speed, and it's best to adjust the speed for different materials. The Dewalt is more solid and heavy and less vibration. The older saw worked fine but I wanted to do more detailed stuff and larger stuff too.

Welcome to the world of scroll sawing. Be careful, you might just get hooked! As other have stated, I would recommend waxing the table top and using Flying Dutchman blades. I personally use #3&5 ultra reverse and #3&5 spirals. Remember, the lines are just a "guide." Good luck and have fun!!!

As someone without a lot of space or my own (I have access to a nice shop, but would like to work at home instead) a scroll saw is certainly on my wishlist.
That was the first thing I used my "Coal Bag Steve Stool" for, I cut out some house numbers using composite deck material at my scroll saw.

Steve, if you put clear packing tape on the wood then attach the pattern to that, all you have to do is pull the tape off and it is clean.
I have one of these, including the DeWalt stand, which I never you. Never the less, you are going to love that saw.
I agree on the Flying Dutchman blades. Depending on the wood and thickness, my blades range from the Ultra Reverse #1,3,5 to Spiral Flat End blades in #1, 3, 5. Been using the spiral blades more lately. Slightly wider kerf, but easier to see with my old eyes. No twisting and turning of the work piece too.
Hi Mark, Fabian's Tiny Workshop send me some to try from Germany. He said they are the same maker as the Flying Dutchman. I also have some spiral ones to try. Now that I have my stand done, I can make some fun projects and test out all the different blades. I like the idea of not turning the work piece all the time.

Very cool. Looks like a great saw. To this day, I still enjoy my scroll saw more than any tool in my shop. I use it quite frequently for a lot of our projects as well. It is a very versatile tool. Great video, Steve.

I bought the DeWalt saw about a year ago. I gotta get those comfort knobs. They're great if you're doing a big, complicated project. Anyone who is a serious scroll saw dude knows what I'm talking about. I bought a Delta electronic saw back in 1985 and it lasted for over 30 years. But I am glad to get this new DeWalt. It's not any better motorwise, but the blade changing is so much easier!!! I've used better blade changing saws before. I worked in a woodshop with the Excalibur saws. They were easy blade changing. But their top speeds were not fast enough to suit me. If you get really used to the saw, you might appreciate the extra speed that some saws have. Well, blah blah. I'm not a salesman for DeWalt. HAHA
Yeah, I really like my Dewalt. And the knob makes loosening the blades much easier. It's a good size to grab onto and the knurling is real grippy. Search for the "Lift and Click" attachment that holds the arm up while you feed the blade through a hole. It's a good helping hand.

I know this video is about 3 years old but I just assembled my saw and man is it heavy. You made it look light the way you picked up that box. It took my daughter and I both to lift it. I definitely need practice using it. If I drove the way I was scrolling, I would have killed a few people! I'm going to order your projects from Etsy and practice.

I get my Olson brand blades from Sloan's woodshop. They are great people! I use a lot of 2/0 reverse tooth skip tooth blades. For thicker stuff I use #3 or 7 Mach series from Olson as well! I would suggest to sand the table and wax it on the scroll saw. It makes wood glide so easy!

Congrats on the SS upgrade, Steve! I've had my 788 for about 10 yrs. and love it to death. It has thousands of hrs. on it and has yet to let me down. A couple things you may want to look into are a magnifying light and a foot switch, they make it so much more enjoyable. Another thing, when you build your stand, you may want to make the back leg(s) adjustable. I find if the back is higher and the table is tilted toward me, it's more comfortable to work. Also, Flying Dutchman blades can't be beat IMHO. Have fun, buddy!

I have heard from some of the scroll saw clubs on TH-cam that the DeWalt 788 bearings are not well lubricated from the factory. Have you re-greased the bearings on the arms of your saw? I want to make sure that I take care of this if it is a problem before I put a lot of mileage on my DW788. I ordered a bunch of blades from BearWood I ordered about 5-6 different types but haven't used them yet. I also ordered the Pegas Chuck Head for the DW788 from BearWood but I am just getting started in scroll sawing. I need to make a teardrop peace sign for my sister's birthday next month. I am using olive wood from a tree that we had at our house since 1968. Sister is an old hippie from the 1960s so I think she will appreciate the peace sign from our old olive tree that was in the family for the past 52 years. BTW, i really like your smile when you are woodworking. I can tell that you really love your work. Thanks!

You probably saw my friend Bob from our local Gwinnett Woodworkers club talking about the bearings. I don't use my saw that frequently, so I haven't bothered getting him to service it, but at least he is nearby if it starts getting noisy. Good luck with the project and enjoy your saw!
@@SteveCarmichael Thanks. I think it was a Gwinnett video that I learned about the bearing lube issue. Like you, I will probably wait until I hear some noise, or add the lube in the rare moment that I have a couple hours of spare time. I never knew that olive wood was used for woodworking until I ordered an olive wood wooden kitchen utensil set form Israel. I love the wood and it has many interesting patterns in it. I heard that the reason it is rarely used for woodworking is because you can make a lot more money selling olives and olive oil from the olive tree than you can by cutting the tree down and harvesting the wood. Therefore, most of the olive wood used for woodworking comes from tree trimmings. This is exactly how I acquired my olive wood. My mother passed away in 2019 and we had to sell her house. I needed to trim a big branch from the olive tree before the house sold, so I saved the branch and it has been seasoning for about a year and a half. I live in California, but I used to live in Georgia back in the early 1960s. My dad was stationed at Robins AFB and we lived in Warner Robins. I had a baby sister that died there just after birth in 1962 and she is buried at the Magnolia Cemetery but never had a grave marker. Last year I worked with Magnolia to get a marker placed and I visited the grave-site and my old stomping grounds last year. I was very impressed how friendly folks from Georgia were. Very different from the people in California. I miss Georgia and the people there. (And I LOVE the peaches - had a great time at Lane Orchards) Maybe some day, I'll move there. Great looking saw and project, Steve. I've heard and read where there is a big difference in performance when you step up to the higher quality saws, which you have just shown.
I use either Olson or Flying Dutchman reverse tooth saw blades. Most places that sell scroll saw wood or patterns carry them, or you can find them on EBay.

Great site! After wanting a DeWalt for YEARS, I just bought the one that Grizzly has on sale! I started With a Dremel 16" that I called "Shaky Jake" , then graduated to a Dremel 18" which doesn't vibrate nearly as much, but was all I could afford at the time! . I am making a knife for my Grandson, and no matter what blade I used, It wouldn't touch the laminated material I am using for the handle! Anxiously awaiting the arrival of my new saw! I couldn't find the link for the comfort knobs, but they look to be a great addition, and I think some sort of arm lifter will be my next purchase.

Excellent video Steve! I have a cheapy from Harbor freight that works OK but I'm ready to upgrade. Dad has that D Walt and loves it! He also took off the guard. I found my workpiece hops up-and-down with the guard off but that's probably something I have to get used to. I know you just got it but if you end up trying to spiral plates I'd be interested if you like them. I'm not able to do the spiral blades on the scrollsaw I presently have.

Hey Steve Just a heads up. I noticed Steve Good mentioned covering your workpiece with blue masking tape before gluing on your template so that cutting through the masking tape extends the life of your blade by lubricating it.

Hey brother bear. I have been researching numerous scroll saws trying to find the one I want to invest in and this is the one I believe I want. I just recently got into work working and found a 80 year old craftsman for free and I was instantly hooked. Not sure about the best place for blades but I have been really intrigued by spiral blades and not needing to spin the work piece unless needed for throat clearance(my old saw a has 24" which I enjoy immensely) but heard that reverse skip tooth blade reduce the need for sanding. Sorry that's all I got in my woodworking infancy. Would appreciate any more knowledge you have. Hope you keep SMILING!
Hey Thanks!!! Wow that saw sounds really cool, especially for free! I have a hard time cutting straight lines with a spiral but they are great for random shaped cuts. I use the reverse blade a lot and it does reduce sanding to almost nothing.

Mine came with a Delta manual and blades. Do you remember if hardware was packed with the manual or separate?
I believe there was a small plastic bag of parts, and the manual was separate. I've heard that the Delta and Dewalt are basically the same saw just branded differently, so maybe they are made at the same place and the manual got switched? Hey Juan! The saw is still working as good as when I bought it. Yes it cuts hardwood fine. I've only tried 3/4" thick or less though. I've even cut metal and coins with it. You just have to find the right blade and speed combination that works best for the material.

Congrats Steve. The DW788 scroll is truly a Ferrary of the scroll saws. All you need is the Easy Lift device and the foot pedal. Both work great for scrolling big projects. Happy scrolling pal!

Hi. It's been a while, how is the DeWalt scroll saw holding up? I am thinking about buying the same model but I hear that the needle bearings are under lubricated and the saw starts knocking and vibrating. That's a lot of money for me so I thought I'd ask you how it was holding up. Great video.
The scroll saw is still working great. Most of the folks in our woodworking club have them. Bob Brokaw is in our club and he has lots of repair videos on youtube on the Gwinnett Woodworkers channel. A new saw should work for a long time, but it depends on how much you use it. I use mine about once per month, so I doubt I will ever wear it out. It was a lot of money for me too, but I was able to use gift cards and credit card reward points to help pay for it.
Steve, I have just purchased this saw and I am totally new to any type of woodworking. I have watch several videos and it seems that the actual cutting portion is sped up. Is your video showing the actual time/speed of your cutting? I am trying to figure out how fast or slow everyone is cutting. Thank you.

I'm a novice with my new DeWalt 788 scroll saw. I need some tips on setting tension, speed, and blades. Thanks in advance!
Hi Earl - Congrats on the new saw! It's a good one. When I move the tension lever, it usually ends up on about 3-4. If you pluck the blade with your fingernail, it should make a high ping sound. Speed usually falls somewhere in the middle. If it's too fast, you will get smoke and burning smell. If it's too slow, it takes forever to cut. I like Olsen Reverse blades. If you are making puzzle type pieces that need to fit back together with small gaps, use a thin blade size 00, 0, 1, 2. If just cutting parts out, you can use a thicker blade size 2+. In general, thinner wood can be cut with higher tpi, i.e 28tpi for a smooth cut. Thicker wood can be cut with lower tpi i.e. 12tpi but not as smooth. For hard wood, I usually use a thicker blade with low tpi. Blades are cheap so get a variety of blades with different tpi's and thicknesses and try them all out on different types of wood. If it doesn't cut easily or burns/smokes, then try a different blade. Hope that helps!
@@SteveCarmichael it certainly helps! Thank you. One other question. The blade was not centered, much closer to one side and after just a few minutes of cutting the hole for the blade is now a little wider. Is that a problem?
Hmm, that sounds odd. Check to make sure the saw table is on correctly. Sounds like it may have been shifted to one side when it was bolted on. If I'm remembering right, I think the back has a pin that holds it on so make sure the pin is in the correct spot.
Also, make sure to let the blade do the cutting and avoid pushing it to either side. If you push to the side, the blade will flex and the cut will have a curve instead of being flat. The cut should be | and not ( or ).

You won't use pin blades anymore with this saw. Maybe take the pin off and use them like that? hmm

I inherited a Craftsman scrollsaw from my uncle (that looks identical to your old saw). My problem is that I didn't inherit the Allen wrench to release the blade and I cannot figure out the size. None of the allens I own fit. Any suggestion on the right size wrench?
+Jeff Meyer Hmm, my Craftsman 13" has a knob on top that loosens the clip thing that holds the blade. It uses pin blades, so not sure, but yours sounds different.

Hey, yes it is really worth it. I didn't believe it myself until I got it and the difference is like night and day. I went from an old Craftsman 13" to the Dewalt. It is so smooth and quiet, and the ability to adjust the speed and use pinless blades is fantastic. I got it from Home Depot on sale, plus I had a couple Home Depot gift cards that helped bring the price down for me. I have a credit card that earns points and I redeem the points for HD gift cards to buy tools. Check out Steve Good's reviews on youtube. I think he also recommends a Delta that is very similar to the Dewalt and in the same price range. Thank YOU for watching!

Hey, it's just regular printer paper with a light dusting of 3m general purpose 45 spray adhesive.
I just notice that you have polish coat of arms sticker. Nice :D
Nice snag Steve. I have one of the "Type 1" models and it does a great job for a non scroller like me.
On the stand build. You may notice that the DeWalt stand for that saw it is built with the saw on a downward slant for ease of viewing the pattern and like you said, less fatigue. Something to consider.
BTW: I like you music choices. It's relaxing. I have a difficult time with some that nerve shattering stuff some folks use.

+Jim E Hi Jim! Thanks! Yes, I plan to build a stand that has an angle adjustment under the back leg. I was just taking some measurements and setting it at different heights to see what felt best. Now to design the plan.

very good job on the project I also have a 788 and I enjoy it also. get some flying Dutchman blades and Charles Dearing patterns and u will be set. keep up the good work steve.
