Scroll Saw Realistic Faces and Skin Tones (No Staining!)

- It’s pretty easy to make scroll saw art using contrasting wood colors, but what if you want a realistic picture? How do you make realistic faces, skin tones, and other artistic effects using wood? The key isn’t using wood species with contrasting colors. It’s about finding just the right variations of the same wood color. In this scroll saw project I wanted to make this insanely cool picture of a gorilla wearing a hoodie. Basically, the entire picture is made up of variations of browns. That’s not anything new for scroll sawing, but the difference in this case was trying to make the scroll saw art flow gradually from one color to the next, giving a 3D effect and making the skin tones look realistic, even though they are made from wood.
The scroll saw tips and tricks I used can be utilized in just about any woodworking project. Take your time to select the right wood species with the colors you want. Spend a lot of time planning before ever cutting. The results are clear - amazing wood scroll saw art that leaps off the canvas!

The amount of detail in this one is amazing
The patience you have, must make your marriage work out better than most.😂 Amazing work! 👏
It was a herculean trial of patience 🤣
I don't know which is more amazing, the finished piece or your patience. Both!
This project is stunning. So good. So impressive. Keep up the amazing work. This video deserves so many more views than the current 1k/day.
Thanks! It was a fun video to make regardless of the views.
Fantastic job - great results
All I can say is WOW that is truly amazing Talk about patience and hand eye coordination I am beyond impressed. This is probably my favorite piece you have done great job.
Thanks! 🙏 Patreon voted. I was pretty set on doing Nintendo Duck Hunt, but they wanted this one. I totally get it!
Billy, it looks amazing. Woodworking and art... Awesome!
Really beautiful project. Nice job!
Wow!! Awesome build. Amazing the amount of detail you were able to capture in all those small pieces!!
I broke a lot of pieces and had to recut them. So tiny and delicate!
Wow dude, that is so cool and the talent and patience to do that is off the chart. Great job.
I love it! It’s fascinating how it all comes together. I still haven’t figured out how to know what to cut and what color, etc. but I’d love to see you do roses or a flower of some kind that’s obviously not too colorful, only so many species with color but I’d love to see what you’d pick and the design, etc. btw lignum vite isn’t the only green wood, poplar can have purples and greens, I build a cheeseboard where the bottom border pattern I used purple poplar (it’s was vibrant purple too) that had marbling in the end grain… I but finish on it or oil and it became this deep, dark green! Stunning and totally unexpected
I'll try to do a few tips and tricks videos on those topics. Poplar is a sirens call of a wood. It has amazing colors. I've also had those colors turn brown over time. My picture of Poison Ivy (flowers too!) had a green poplar background and it's now a brown background. I didn't film it unfortunately. I'm always up for more poplar tests though.
Amazing job! Hats off to your patients.
Ha! A labor of love.
Wow absolutely stunning it turned out amazing. You are an amazing artist and craftsmen. Keep up the amazing work
This one is my favorite one thanks
In hindsight, it's one of my favorite end results.
Absolutely fascinating to watch! And that skill level!! Wow! Most people would never use a scroll saw to that level of excellence 👌
Love it. Just amazing job replicating the colors and style of the original.
It was a challenge. We're limited to the colors of wood we have. It's hard to match them up exactly.
Stunning piece of art, Billy! Truly amazing work! 😃
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Thanks it was a test for sure but I'm now a better scroll sawer because of this project.
That was a fantastic project/artwork to watch. I get the way you approach a project but I sometimes have a hard time getting my head round the shadows. That is where you impress me. You are a great artist at what you produce .Thank you for the video looking forward to the next one. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Crazy amount of work went into that, well worth it, turned out awesome. I'm going to look into those sanding sticks too
I just put the link in the description. I have really enjoyed them, which says something because it's sanding.
Wow that turned out amazing, definitely worth all of those hours you put into it
Hi fantastic pice of art like it very skillfull Woks
Super awesome job!!! Looks amazing!!! Your assumption was correct 40+ hours😉
This is very true
Amazing build! You did have a missed opportunity to use Gorilla Glue spray adhesive. :)
Ha! I like your way of thinking. I purposefully passed. Unfortunately, I have had poor luck with their spray adhesive. I literally threw away a half used bottle yesterday. But it would have been hilarious to constantly flash to it!
Nossa! Que trabalho fantástico! Você é um mega artista! Lindo! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thanks, you are too kind! 🙏
@@NewtonMakesArt thanks, but your job is really beautiful and fantastic! And also your patience and care with each part!
This was awesome to watch! First time on this channel and hooked. What is the contact film for?
I can place a template directly to the workpiece but then I'll have a sticky residue to remove. The film prevents this.
This is the first I've seen on this scroll saw channel and I'm glad I found it. Very well done. I don't suppose this piece is available to purchase?
Not right now. I have sold things on my website.
@@NewtonMakesArt well sadly I appreciate the reply. haha
Squuiiiisssshhhh Squuiiiisssshhhh
One of my favorite channels!! Is there away a software that can make the black in the picture wider? Thanks
Absolutely. I want to do a future video on using software to make templates.
@@NewtonMakesArt thanks that would be great I used Inkscape. I just finished my first one yesterday I tried to do knuckles. It’s ok I should’ve used a different picture. Some of the background areas are to big I thought they looked to big and kind of funny
Absolutely fantastic, Billy. At what point did you start to question your sanity for even attempting this lol?
Bill
The mouth. There are parts I didn't show like the contours of the lips having three different colors in many spots. I knew I was screwed!
idea: brass and aluminum for chain?
I thought about this afterwards too. Maybe in the future.
This is incredible. Can you pinpoint the exact moment you regretted starting this project?
Probably the teeth. But since then I've rebounded and I love this thing to death!
Can you share the contact info of the artist that created the original artwork? I thought you said this was a client job. Forgive me if that is your art. I am an agency owner and would like to discuss with the artist some work I need done. Thanks and great work. You should teach a class in patience! :)
Sir can u teach me. how to make people by scrolls

All fantastic ideas!
