Ok I've never blanched my vegetables and I've always canned for the meat times and until you mentioned it I didn't know either and I'm still here so... there ya go. I also boil some noodles and freeze in snack size ziplock baggies and add to the soup when I open the jar. That way I always have a serving of noodles ready to go for each jar
I was just sitting here thinking about this canned chicken soup, you know if water were to get low or no water, this would be awesome to eat and also add rice or noodles or even potatoes and you wouldn't need more water with all the broth in this. Leisa, thank you, this is awesome !!!
I am thrilled with my ForJars lids and their excellent quality! I ordered 200 regular lids and 200 wide mouth lids to add to the stock I have on hand. I refuse to be in the same position as 2020/2021 when lids were so hard to find. I did use your discount code to save 10% and made sure I had an order over $60 (after the discount code) to get free shipping.
Canned my first batch of 'ugly chicken' last night, first time canning anything really. It turned out great! I'll try this soup next, what a great thing to have on the shelf and know exactly what is in it! Thanks for all the good information, you have been an inspiration to me!
What you’ve made here is by far the most useful thing I have canned! I call this chicken soup starter, my method is a bit different but the outcome is pretty much the same. With families around me getting sick, it’s crazy convenient to open a jar, add the carb of choice, bring to a boil, and deliver! I never knew quarts were 75 min and you were supposed to blanch the veggies first, I always make them just the way you did here. So thank you for teaching me something new - again!
My best friend just gave me a pressure canner. I have been dragging my feet on doing that….but my freezer needs relief so now I have no excuse to delay much longer. I have been working on my Prep Pantry and getting it stocked and organized. Now I want to can meat (I do have commercially canned meats and fish), and the idea of soups, etc. that I can simply tuck into a gift basket along with a loaf of homemade bread and share with a sick or excessively busy friend in need would be fabulous.
When you factor in the cost of propane used to bake a chicken, a rotisserie chicken can be cost effective. I love these easy meals in a jar canning videos. Thanks!
Especially if the store reduces the price near closing. I’ve picked up these types of cooked chix for $1.99 and had an an enjoyable chicken dinner, then made soup and stock from the bones. I’m with her- not a purist.
I was showing my son and daughter in law how to pressure can carrots and chili. This weekend and I used forjars lids and all sealed. Thanks for sharing this.
@forjars shop your customer service is great and kind.? I had a question miss read the description and they were willing to send me what I thought I ordered it was my mistake not yours. They were kind. I ordered more of what I wanted and was delivered quickly. Thank you and your employees.
Thanks Leisa this is my plan for today. I bought 4 pkgs of chicken breasts (bone in) on sale for $1.32#. I cut the meat off & canned ugly chicken with it. I got a whole chicken from the senior food give away. I cooked that with the bones from the breasts & will use the meat from it today to make chicken soup. Thanks for the video. It is most helpful.
I used a pint of this to make a rice side dish, and it was fantastic! I put one cup of parboiled rice in my rice cooker, added a pint of the chicken soup plus 1/2 jar of water, and a tablespoon of butter. Then I let the rice cooker do it’s thing. Let it sit for 10-15 mins with the “keep warm” on, fluffed it, and served it. Season with salt and pepper if needed. Great rice and chicken/veggie main dish or side dish!
Bits and pieces: Made the chicken soup yesterday and it came out amazing....thank you! Bought 2 monster rotisserie chickens from costco and I got one left over so it's groundhog day....can't have too much chicken soup. Since I loathe peeling carrots, scrubbing them with a steel wool pad worked. My knife skills have blossomed watching all the videos....not a bad thing have in Chicago.
It was turkey, not chicken, but we pretty much had this soup for lunch today :) It was a "after-Thanksgiving" sale bird that we used for "ugly turkey", turkey broth, and turkey soup. (So much canning! lol) Canned it in December of 2021 and it was still yummy today, of course.
Wow this is timely! Just got legs on sale for 89c a lb, could not figure out what to do, This!!! Perfect and thanks so much for following canning rules!
I love White Rocks! That’s what my Mom always used. I have 2 of them in my flock of 12 layers. I’m sick today so watching soup videos and sleeping all day… ♥️👍🙏🇺🇸🤓
I used my ForJars lids yesterday for the first time. it was a quick waterbacth salsa verde. 3 out of 4 lids sealed BUT I remembered I did't de-bubble one of the jars. Probably that one. Could be? I'll be canning tomorrow so will give them another try. I have been looking for a chicken soup recipe. There are a ton out there but you're a trusted provider of information. Thanks!!!!
When you do bone broth next week, please consider spending some detailed time on the vegetables cuttings you add to make the stock. Specifically would like to see the parts of the onion used. The idea of using parts that I've thrown out for years is intriguing but leery of using the wrong pieces. Thanks for sharing your knowledge
OMG, canned this a couple of weekends ago. Used it as a base for chicken pot pie and a can of potoes and some peas. It was over the top delicious. Hubby give it two thumbs up. I don't know who's more into canning these days him or me. We're hooked and loving it! Thank you for giving me the courage to make the leep😍
I’ve never canned soup, but I really want to make and can some chicken soup now!! This just looks SO DELICIOUS!! Thanks for sharing Leisa!! Ps…Dumplings on top of this would be THE BOMB! Ps… my sister had a catering friend who bought all their chicken for salads, pulled chicken, etc, from Costco’s rotisserie chicken. They said it was actually cheaper than buying their whole birds and roasting them themselves!!
Yes, where we live our chicken is a couple dollars more than the rotisserie. Then I cook the bones for two days and get a gallon or more of delicious broth. King Soopers chicken that is rotisserie just went up two dollars.
Wonderful video. I saw a video here on TH-cam on deboning a rotisserie chicken. It’s a breeze. Requires a big zip-lock freezer baggie. Roll the chicken around in it and it removes the skin from the chicken and the chicken from the bones. Helped me get my bone broth going. I think I’ll try this soup soon. It looks amazing. Thanks Leisa!
I used tattler lids the first time, they all sealed🎉! I ordered harvest guard though, they were a little cheaper and they gave me a discount - so happy for reusable lids 😊!
I'm so glad that you said you didn't see the steam either, my first time using a pressure canner, I didn't see the steam.. I could hear it..feel it..but not see it.. I ruined 5 jars of food cause my canner boiled completely dry.. and 2 jars actually cracked...all because I keep waiting to SEE the steam cause that's ALL anyone ever says...you have to see the steam..
This looks like it would be a really good thing to have in my house I can see chicken and noodles chicken and rice chicken and dumplings like you said. I may even consider some beef to do the same things with.
I am desperate for jars! I have been buying them but I've got to get out to the thrift stores and on craigslist to get more jars! Craigslist has a lot of old jars with the metal that goes 2 ways on the top but I would assume I need to buy gaskets and I would rather not have to do that. I make great chicken soup and that is the 1st thing I had planned to can. Here's a tip for when you heat it up squeeze some fresh lemon in there and it will totally change the soup it won't taste like lemon but it will be almost sparkly on your tongue it's delicious!
Thanks for the tip about the lemons. In my area it's actually more expensive to get them from the thrift store than from Walmart. Sad state of affairs.
I couldn’t find the video you mentioned the brand of shelves in. Bought shelves anyway cuz price was good and they kinda looked like they’d work like yours. Brought them home and LOVE them. Found the video, same shelves. 😂 The ability to change the configuration is everything to me. Best shelves ever. Thank you.
I love how you share safety tips in canning. I also appreciate your info on making chicken soup, one of my favorites! Thank you! I enjoy canning. It is my outlet!
I am so excited to watch you use that knife, I ordered on can't wait to use it. Thank you so much for letting us know how to fix something even if we make a mistake.
I've watched a lot of canning videos and I think this is the first time I have heard anyone mention blanching the veggies first.. good info to know.. I love forjar lids.. i think they beat all other lids .. Great video..thanks
Finally ordered the knife you use. Can’t wait to get it. And ordered the lids because I agree with you, I don’t think we’re done yet either. Thanks for all you do!
I love the knife you're using. I ordered one last year I noticed how you're able to get the grizzle or the bones away from the chicken just by the fill with that knife it is awesome
That is true. At my local store my friend works in the deli and told me that it is the same chickens you buy in the meat aisle. In my store the rotisserie chicken are cheaper than the raw ones. 😮
Carrots can be cold pack. No problem with that. And celeri don't have much air or water.. again, no problem. The necesseties to blanch vegetable before canning is for the composition to be modified.. carrots and celeri hold their shape and don't throw out air and water. Here in Canada the guidelinw for cold pack carrots is 30 minutes... no problem with 75 minutes!
If I were to make this and blanch the veg, how long would I need to blanch them? I LOVE this soup idea! Hubs can just take a pint to work and have a wonderful lunch, and I can gift a jar or two to my 92 year old BFF!
I agree what we're going through isn't going to end soon. I am currently living in an RV (was our retirement plan) which is not food storage friendly. We are days from closing on a new home (new retirement plan) & will have a large pantry I'm excited to fill! I can't help but feel anxious that I'm behind on preparations. It looks like we'll be too late for a spring garden (we have some amending to do) but we will definitely have a fall one. I can't wait to get to canning and dehydrating our harvest & filling our pantry !We're turning one bedroom into a walk in pantry. I'm excited to get started but am a bit anxious I'm late in getting started. I see a lot of ugly chicken & pork in my near future! 😁
This is the Mrs, so weird I did A search last night to see if you had a video on chicken soup! I was searching to see if you had to precook the vegetables and how long you have to process quarts!
I love that description, chicken soup is something you measure with your soul. I add a LOT of garlic & onions to mine because I tend to make it if someone is sick. I wouldn't can with the scoop of gochujang I add for umami & sinus clearing.
Oh boy I will be making this in a couple of days. Today I canned 7quarts of turkey stock and tomorrow I will can my beef stock 😋 thank you for sharing ❤️
Hi Lisa, do you have a recipe for pressure canning beef short ribs? I'm trying to keep my freezer low stocked just in case there's trouble. Thank you. ❤ your channel.
The light goes on...I never thought of freezing leftover chunked up rotisserie chicken so it's recipe ready! It would be so much tastier and cheaper than using those bags of fresh grilled chicken strips.
Yeah, I’ve made quite a few different canned soups with that combo of veggies and obviously never caught the instructions for blanching the vegetables. It makes sense though, knowing you blanch them before canning just them alone, but have always done exactly what you did when doing soups. I’ve canned gallons and gallons of soup like that, it’s all been tasty and no problems with the digestion or you know, staying alive. 😂. Literally years I’ve been doing this and just now realized I should have been blanching them all along. Not always the sharpest crayon! 😂😂
I've never canned soup. I was at Costco today and picked up 2 rotisserie chickens to make this soup, but I forgot the chicken broth. So tomorrow I'll pick it up at the store. I figured when I heat it up that I would just add my pasta.
@Suttons Daze - Great videos. Thank you. I have one question. Dehydrated food vs Freeze Dried, which do you prefer for what situations. I wasn't sure if you had a video on this topic, but I love how you explain things on your videos. I figured I would ask if you had any tips between each.
THANK YOU SO MUCH for sharing this video. I learned A LOT. -> My lesson from vid is... 1) blanching veggies. Didn't exercise that. WILL DO it from now on. 2) Listening for the hiss. -> My question is... 1) layering important? 2) Should veggies be on the bottom? 3) Can mushrooms be added?
What I've done is to put the jars in the canner and let the water just simmer for 30 minutes before I get the canner up to pressure; that way, the veggies will have cooked some which is 'probably' equivalent to blanching.
I just had delivered today a big thing of toilet paper and paper towels slong with a 50 pound bag of rice For each 8 of us each for my caregiver.. I also got each of us a 50 pound bag of rice to use the food saver for sealing it in 2 pound blocks. Tomorrow we are going out shopping for chicken and corned beef . :)
Hi Lisa, LOVE your channel. I've learned so much from you. I'm going to pressure can this recipe today. I'd like to add whole raw garlic cloves to each jar. Does raw garlic work in this recipe?
Ok I've never blanched my vegetables and I've always canned for the meat times and until you mentioned it I didn't know either and I'm still here so... there ya go. I also boil some noodles and freeze in snack size ziplock baggies and add to the soup when I open the jar. That way I always have a serving of noodles ready to go for each jar
Great idea about the noodles, thanks!
Yeah I like rice as not sure how gluten free noodles do froz to add to soup but rice is perfect
Thanks for the noodle idea!
I was just sitting here thinking about this canned chicken soup, you know if water were to get low or no water, this would be awesome to eat and also add rice or noodles or even potatoes and you wouldn't need more water with all the broth in this. Leisa, thank you, this is awesome !!!
Thats another great reason to can soup!

When my husband was dieing with cancer my canned chicken soup was his favorite.quick and easy to get my hands on.hh would ask for it.never a waste.
think she made a mistake as she usually does pints.. pints should be 75 min quart should be 90 per my Ball book

Thank you!
If the cost of propane/electricity goes up much more, a lot of people may just switch over to a wood stove.
Especially if the store reduces the price near closing. I’ve picked up these types of cooked chix for $1.99 and had an an enjoyable chicken dinner, then made soup and stock from the bones. I’m with her- not a purist.

I have 4 dozen Pur lids to use for something cheaper to replace, if they fail. Never used them before. It'll be ForLids next time.
Agree good and economical. Thanks Lesa
I've never canned soup. I was at Costco today and picked up 2 rotisserie chickens to make this soup, but I forgot the chicken broth. So tomorrow I'll pick it up at the store. I figured when I heat it up that I would just add my pasta.
I actually made 2 orders of lids so far!
@Suttons Daze - Great videos. Thank you. I have one question. Dehydrated food vs Freeze Dried, which do you prefer for what situations. I wasn't sure if you had a video on this topic, but I love how you explain things on your videos. I figured I would ask if you had any tips between each.
For a lot of things, I prefer the convenience of freeze dried. You have to test out a number of things to see what you prefer really
@@SuttonsDaze Thanks - yeah I have dehydrator. I am looking into getting a freeze dryer. Trying to find one at a good price.
Using rotisserie chicken is a fantastic idea!
Layering just helps you keep the solids to liquid ratio where it should be. Not necessary. Yes to the mushrooms.
What I've done is to put the jars in the canner and let the water just simmer for 30 minutes before I get the canner up to pressure; that way, the veggies will have cooked some which is 'probably' equivalent to blanching.
Thanks 😊
You're welcome
Love you're recipes 😊
Love canning soup..
I used precooked chicken in my soup but didn't like it as well as raw chicken, seemed to be over processed for the chicken. Love chicken soup.
Thanks for the info😊
How long do you blanch the veggies for?
Canning soup right now !
Really enjoy learning from your videos! I will try this too!!
You teach me so much I really appreciate you 😊
I'm so glad!
I just ordered 100 more with the discount code. Thanks
I will be ordering these lids when I get paid on the 15th. Hope your code still works then.
I am using raw celery and onions and dehydrated carrots. Ideas on amount for jars and do I rehydrate first?
To taste, so long as the jar is not more than half full of solids
@@SuttonsDaze Thank you!
Hi Lisa, LOVE your channel. I've learned so much from you. I'm going to pressure can this recipe today. I'd like to add whole raw garlic cloves to each jar. Does raw garlic work in this recipe?
Go lightly with it
Will do. Thanks so much ♥@@SuttonsDaze
I love the for jars lids
