We have made this a lifestyle. I also have sensors that are easily accessible so I can monitor the temps in my freezer and the basement. I am so glad I did this when I did. A tip: maple syrup only lasts forever if it is never opened. Once opened it can get mold in it and often does. My solution is to store it in small bottles instead of large ones and only open a small bottle at a time. If mold gets in it , the strands can grow through the whole bottle so I throw it out.
I bought a gallon when travelling through maple bush country. I gave it to a young couple thinking I was giving them a treasure. When I later asked them how the maple syrup was going they said it went bad and they had to throw it out. I was upset that they were so careless with it. My parents would keep a large container of it in the freezer. It would stay liquid and they would top up a small bottle for the refrigerator as needed. The pint jug I have now that I bought from the grocery store says to refrigerate after opening.

My neighbor recently passed and they came from her mother when the Rawleigh Man used to make home deliveries. Can't say as I would use them but the smell is really strong, especially the cinnamon.

Good morning Leisa! Did you know that there are a lot of different trees that can be tapped for syrup? I believe it is over 30 different types. Maple, sycamore, birch etc! Apple cider vinegar can be created using a sugar water and apple scraps. You can also make other types of vinegar from your favorite fruits as well. And the juice in a can of chick peas can be used as an egg substitute in baking!
It's nice to know that my saved quart of maple syrup from Grandpa Olson's sugar bush is still good from the 70s. I would have to be starving to open it though!
I am very fortunate. Our little town has a farmer that comes every Friday, weather permitting, and brings up his organic honey and his in season fruits and veggies. He just raised his prices this year to $22 for a quart. Well worth it. A forever food that also makes great medicines!! Cover peeled garlic cloves with the honey in an airtight jar and set away like a diy extract. for colds and other illnesses take like a cough syrup. Amazing!
Oats and brown lentils fried up with your onions and garlic really help your ground beef go farther. Anything more than 1/3 oats makes it mushy, but if anyone gets nostalgic for cafeteria taco day it’s actually the trick.
Another trick. 4-6" tall jars, 3/4 full of shortening with a candle of appropo length pushed into the middle of jar. Place jar in a metal tube and a 6-8" terra cotta flower pot upside down on top. Will heat a small room and provide light for several hours.
I use those same buckets for sugar & flour. I put all my forever foods in 1/2 jars & vacuum seal it. I have about 90 lbs of sugar. I have gallons of both white & apple vinegar but I also make my own apple cider to use. I make my own vanilla in spiced rum. I have peppermint extract, orange, lemon, & cranberry extract. That’s all the liquor we have in our house. But it is so worth it!!!.I learned that soy sauce lasts forever bc mine hasn’t gone bad & I’ve had it a long time.
Buckets Only vs Mylar Bags in buckets: I have had two buckets split open at the bottom, both of them were unused. I guess it was just age. If I had stored grain in them without mylar bags, I would have lost everything and created a huge mess. It’s now bags in buckets only for me and my house. Mylar bags protect the grain while the bucket protects the Mylar bag. YMMV.
Daughter and grandson visiting from out of state. Due to the very warm weather (and even with some room air conditioners) I keep the pantry door open for air flow but no windows close that are open. Grandson looked in the pantry and very quietly (I heard him) said wow 🤣. Wait till he sees the toilet paper/paper towel/kleenex stashes on the upper shelves in the office. Anyway I am refraining from ordering some items to restock for the year until the heat wave ends. Hopefully soon! Thanks for the reminders.
Leisa, I found your channel several years ago, and I’ve learned so much. I’m a busy homeschool mom, and I’m so grateful my kids are growing up knowing how to keep a household pantry. Thank you for consistently putting out great home economics and pantry preparation content. It has blessed my family for many years.
I like jello both ways and eat some almost every day. When I was a kid I had horrible nose bleeds and was severely anemic. The doctor told my mom to give me lots of red beans, liver & jello. I love all three :).
Maple syrup?!?! We “make” our own, we tap our Maples, and can it. I had no idea. I knew about our honey - I’ve got a stick pile. I was shocked by some but knew most. Thank you Leisa. I have a lot of Mylar bags and OA’s, because I have a freeze dryer. You have given me an abundance of knowledge! Enjoy your evening.
Speaking of jello, saw a post that it will stop a nose bleed! Just rub the powder on your upper gums. Many of the comments agreed that it had worked for them. I now have jello in my pantry. Thanks for another great video Leisa.
Have been stockpiling for years, but I feel like it would be amazing. If you did a video on how to take those items from your list and make dinners or breakfast or lunch is out of it and show new people how versatile that list really is and maybe some new meals that they’ve never thought of I love having fun trivia videos are you’re always my go to channel to watch
Many of these channels have recipes for dried meals in a jar. You would take some of those recipes and adapt them to how you cook. For example, I do not have the pressure canner or 20,000 glass jars that they say y'all need to fill to have food for a year. So I put mine in vacuum sealed pouches. Many of the dried meals in a jar are for the instant pot. I do not have an instant pot. I do have a 6-1 rice cooker that operates on my pocket solar USB power bank or the truck and other alternatives. So I put together meals so that I can put 2 cups of water and the contents of a pouch in my cooker and press a button for a quick meal. I chose 2 cups because water is sold in bottles that contain 2 cups in my area. Recipe example Fried Rice Parboiled Rice Dehydrated carrots Dehydrated peas Dehydrated onions Soy sauce powder. I can add meat if I chose later. I can add other vegetables if I want.
@@Holly-ys1me sorry if that was confusing wasn’t talking about dried meals in a jar. I just thought if Leisa had a video where she took those 20 some items that she listed off and showed newbies how to make meals out of them it would be informative for them. Some people can stockpile all they want but if they don’t know how to put it together or use it then how, same is if they don’t know how to store it how good is it? Her videos are always so entertaining and informative. I just thought this might make a great video. Sorry for any confusion it caused . Thank you
I buy my raw honey from a local Middle Eastern store. It's cheaper and will last you a long time. I bought a liter last summer that was completely crystallized. I put it in my oven with the light on overnight and now it's nice and clear. I put a wooden spoon to hold the door open so that it doesn't get too hot.
Okay, I have to share this, I purchased brown rice, vacuum sealed several bags of 2-cups a a bag and even two years later, I opened the vacuum sealed bags, cooked them and they were great… granted, the vacuum sealed bags were also stored in a 5 gallon bucket with oxygen absorbers, even so, they were fine, tasted great…
If you find a good lentil soup recipe...they are amazing like that. Also, people should try to invest in spices and seasonings, try to store these in glass bottles...it really adds value to their shelf life.
I’ve been building my pantry in my tiny apartment using my main walk in closet. I keep reorganizing and expanding - good shelves are very imp in a small place. Don’t forget your pets!
You can put your bed up on risers .. they are for sale inside stores, or us 2 by4 bocks under your bed the so you can slide plastic containers of food under the bed good storage under the ed.
I use oats as an extender when making meatballs. I never use flour. 750grqms Ground beef, 1 cup whole oats, 1 teaspoon stock powder, 1 finely diced onion, 1 finely diced capsicum, 1 tablespoon tomato paste, 1 teaspoon soy sauce, 1 egg optional, salt and pepper. Roll into large palm sized balls. Grill in pan to brown, transfer to ovenproof dish and finish cooking in oven at 180 degrees centigrade, for 20 minutes. I am Australian; we use metric. Please convert your own measurements and oven temperature to imperial if you need to. This recipe is adjustable to taste.
As I make homemade Jerky I cut the fat put in slow cooker and render the Tallow strain and put in muffin tins and freeze.once frozen pop them out and put in zip lock bags. These little flavor disks have a million and one uses.
Hi Leisa, I'm happy to hear about all of these foods. Thank you very much. I only buy pure vanilla extract. Salt is a mineral. I'm going to town tomorrow for corn starch and soy sauce. I like bananas in my cherry jello and I like whipped cream on top. My grandmother made it and stored it in those cute little refrigerator dishes. With the glass top.
People are so concerned about bugs in their wheatberries, rice, etc. Insects are ground up to make flour along with the wheatberries and no one has died from ingesting them. When you're ready to use your berries, rice, etc. just fill a basin with water and dump in the berries or rice, swish the basin around and the little critters will float to the top where you can skim them off with a strainer. Problem solved. I never pack anything into mylar bags because I feel the chemicals will eventually leach into what you're trying to store. When you put items in the freezer to kill bugs and then take the items out, condensation will form on the items and bring about fungus growth and mold. I tried that method on corn kernels and got some nice fuzz on the corn. MUCH worse than eating bugs. I store all my dry items in glass jars with oxygen absorbers and desiccant packs -- desiccants on the bottom and O2 on the top. Bay leaves didn't work for me. My 2 cents.
Thanks Leisa! My thought is that I may not eat it today but if you’re hungry you will! I buy a few things that I like but may not eat all the time because they aren’t the healthiest but in an emergency all bets are off 😂
Great list! Just a reminder on the potato flakes ... make sure that the ONLY ingredient is potato. No added oils, butter, etc. They will cause the potatoes to go rancid. Thanks for sharing the list!
I saw another similar video that also mentioned dry pasta, along with many of the things you mentioned. I'd like to add dry kool-aid mixes in the little pouches. Just add water and sweetener. But... add some citric acid, unsweetened kool-aid lemon flavor, baking soda, and salt, and you've got yourself a nice dishwasher powder for cleaning your dishes. Add white vinegar as the rinse agent!!!
I put paper towels in the bags before putting in the freezer. After taking out and put towel on bottom to defrost. Then take towel out of package. Worked for years.
Great info again Leisa! I double and tripled up on the rice with my dogs in mind. If dog food runs low or if it's crazy expensive since it hasn't stopped climbing, I can make them food with rice and veggies and the juice from the Ugly Chicken!
You can season rice for the dogs with low salt bullion, beef or chicken. If there's any meat you can set for future use, dehydrate, smoke, or freeze dry, powder it if possible, add to homemade dog food. It is necessary to Rehydrate meats first, as it will swell in their stomachs, It could dehydrate the animal in the process, or possibly form a blockage. You can fit this in when you cook the rice or beans. The juice from canned meat, think beef. Chicken, spam, tuna. Sardines or kippers are a good flavoring, the oils help their digestive system, just watch the sodium level. Cats will eat flavored rice, add a few veges, like frozen mixed bags. And a couple diced sardines or kippers. Watch the salt. Human milk gives cats diarrhea. It's crazy to me to have written all this lol. God bless you.
Thank you for all the great info!! I worked at a seafood restaurant way back in 1978 and we made clam chowder and to thicken it we used instant potatoes , way better then flour!!
Thank you for this really important video!! All (well, we probably don’t NEED sugar, but it sure helps make the ‘medicine’ go down😂) these ingredients are real foods, from the earth, that are necessary and vital for a healthy body and knowing that we can stock them for a very long time is invaluable!! You have such a wide and popular platform and I’m so thankful that you are using it to influence people to live in such a positive and proactive way, Leisa! You are a hero to many, including me. Again, thank you. ♥️
Just found you on my feed. So Glad I did!!!! I’m going to see All your videos….Hopefully you have videos of canning and preserving foods “for dummies” like me. I have no idea how to can. What the heck are Mylar bags and how do you use them, etc. I’m totally uneducated in this but know I need to learn to keep my family prepared. Any advise on resources to learn would be greatly appreciated!!!!!! Thank you for what you do to keep us safe.
Love this! I'm also a confessed pantry nerd. I am not a big beans and rice girl, but with a tighter than usual grocery budget, I've broken into my buckets and am experimenting with new recipes and ways of incorporating them into my meals to extend them. My newest way to eat them with is Curtido, a spicy latin style coleslaw. Delicious!
I package up smaller batches that I can use for trade if I need to. But tell them it's all you have but your willing to part with it for what ever you want. Coffee, sugar, honey, Flour not so much as you need the other ingredient to be able to make anything.
Love Jello, fruit on the side and sometimes whip-cream on top - but real whip cream - nothing from a can or a plastic tub. If we are having whip cream the bowl is chilled along with the whippers, there are just somethings I won't budge on and a little splash of homemade Bourdon Vanilla. Great information, I love the list because every item is the beginning of something great 🥂
@@jessicaquiroz7178 Just put a vanilla bean that you’ve cut open and scraped the seeds from and put both the seeds and bean in a glass jar and cover with bourbon. Let sit for weeks and voila 😊 Each time you use a vanilla bean, you can add it to the liquid.
I also store salt in mason jars, but I use the reusable canning lids. The salt will not eat through that. Also use 2 liter bottles from club soda the. Wrap around the lid with lots of electric tape.
Oh yes! My Mom ALWAYS put ACV to the bee stings for us when we were growing up and I continued with this for my children. It indeed helps with the pain. It also helps with the discomfort of sunburns. It also is a good hair rinse for those of us with auburn hair!! It makes the red shine!!
TIP for those canning corn: don't throw out those cobs!!! Turn them into homemade corn syrup... soooo yummy and better for you than the store❤ Can't wait to make more this season myself, eventhough got several jars left from last 😉
My great grandparents made jello every night and to my grandpa's death he couldn't stomach the idea of Jell-O. But GG swore by by Jell-O health benefits. She had beautiful hair in her 80's!
Leisa you r the best. I have learned so much from you. I was so afraid of canning but with ur help and encouragement I jumped right in and can nearly something everyday and love it.Thanks for telling it like it is.
Thank you for talking a bit about hot temps(short term weather). I need a you tube channel about food storage & other prepping in a desert climate. Thnx much 💕
Miso! Curry. Learning how to make flour or corn tortillas! Throw left overs in a tortilla and nothing goes to waste, Ground (or ground in the morter and pestle) black and white pepper to go with salt! Amazing how something so basic can taste so right. Mushroom farming is crazy easy. Some do great freeze dried. Prespored logs to start are pretty reasonably priced. So good for you . Geliton for savory salads.. old fashioned yeah but again, use those left overs+ seasonings , Bless you and your family ❣️
I have the desire to prep but not the money nor do i have the space. My house is small and i wish i had a basement. Those are non existent in nevada. I have a month or two of stocks stashed where i can find space. My big issue is water. I will not drink water out of plastic bottles due to leaching chemicals and microplastics and it takes up room i don't have. Not really sure how to tackle that issue.
I'm in a tiny senior living apartment in way Northern California. Room and funds are also an issue with me. The last few months, since in shop once a month, I've tried to buy at least a couple containers or large canning jars, and double of one pantry staple (flour, sugar, cocoa, etc.). It's helping me to get a small stock going. I read a helpful comment for storage ideas, but also realized that, since I've been decluttering and downsizing, I can actually store several large coolers or bins under my raised platform bed!
I am also very wary of tap water. I would recommend a reverse osmosis water dispenser. They're pricy, but health comes first, and you can budget slowly towards one.
Great video! Thanks! ********************** I've just stocked up on organic beans and wheat berries, all organic, so I can safely sprout them. That really extends them. I feel safer.
Great reminders. I am now seriously thinking about removing the bed from our spare bedroom to expand our pantry. Currently it crowded into our laundry room on numerous shelves.
I vaccumn sealed jello, and powdered pudding mixes in jelly jars with a cupcake liner on the top of mixes before sealing. I also vaccumn, candy in jars, and pkgs of koolaid, and I sealed some seeds dont know if they will grow next year but I'll find out.
Sprouted grains are supposed to be the most healthy (easier to digest) but are a lot of work if you do it often. Instead, I have tried soaking some of my grains with a dash of vinegar for about 6-8 hours at room temperature, then rinsing and cooking. Pre-soaking is said to help remove arsenic in rice and the anti-nutrient, Phytic acid, which inhibits mineral absorption. Faster than sprouting and little work for most of the benefits of sprouting.
I’ve slowly been filling up my shelves with Lot’s of lifetime items. I use tons of Mylar bag’s. Just started doing meal’s in a jar. I just purchased a dehydrator. I’m excited to try it.

Jams and marmalades should last a very long time (until you open them of course)
Buckets Only vs Mylar Bags in buckets:
I have had two buckets split open at the bottom, both of them were unused. I guess it was just age. If I had stored grain in them without mylar bags, I would have lost everything and created a huge mess. It’s now bags in buckets only for me and my house.
Mylar bags protect the grain while the bucket protects the Mylar bag. YMMV.
We do Mylar bags in plastic buckets.
I have everything you mentioned, in large quantities. Thank you, cuz the rest of my family thinks I’m bat nuts crazy. Been Preping since early 2000’s.
You are so welcome!
I'm a homeschool mom too! Thanks for reminding me that's a way to teach budgeting and economics.
I like jello both ways and eat some almost every day. When I was a kid I had horrible nose bleeds and was severely anemic. The doctor told my mom to give me lots of red beans, liver & jello. I love all three :).
Whoa thunk! Very good to know
Maple syrup?!?!
Did you know that you can tap other types of trees. Birch Syrup is Heavenly ❤
When we were sick as kids, my mom would have us drink warm Jello to coat our sick stomachs it works! I still do it now when sick with flu or a cold.
Recipe example
Fried Rice
Parboiled Rice
Dehydrated carrots
Dehydrated peas
Dehydrated onions
Soy sauce powder.
Thank you
If you are not using your storage, how do you rotate it? What is scratch and how come you can make everything from it? LoL.
ONE OFF GRID. SAID PUT ITEMS IN AI. GET TONS FEED BACK DIFFERENT MEAL.IDEAS
1 Quart of Honey now is $22.00 , in my area but its good stuff 🐝 We love Jello shots❤😊
Your local homey in your area is the best because its great for allergies. I buy some all the time from our local honey man. Great stuff.
i use a small amount of baking soda in water to get rid if indigestion. Believe me it works.
Okay, I have to share this, I purchased brown rice, vacuum sealed several bags of 2-cups a a bag and even two years later, I opened the vacuum sealed bags, cooked them and they were great… granted, the vacuum sealed bags were also stored in a 5 gallon bucket with oxygen absorbers, even so, they were fine, tasted great…
Jello is also a natural anti fungal. You can even use it to soak your feet, I would recommend the non colored for that😇
😮 never knew!
I would like to see some different lentil recipes. I have never eaten these but I am willing to give them a try. Thanks Leisa
If you find a good lentil soup recipe...they are amazing like that.
Also, people should try to invest in spices and seasonings, try to store these in glass bottles...it really adds value to their shelf life.
Good to know, I just bought Mylar bags and mason jars…so starting to learn to store for emergencies
I think those 5 gallon buckets are a great idea for storage!!❤
I’ve been building my pantry in my tiny apartment using my main walk in closet. I keep reorganizing and expanding - good shelves are very imp in a small place. Don’t forget your pets!
You can put your bed up on risers .. they are for sale inside stores, or us 2 by4 bocks under your bed the so you can slide plastic containers of food under the bed good storage under the ed.
@@janejohnson-mv5kv yes! I have a high bed frame and store home canned goods under there.
The Jello surprised me. I did not know that. I have spices that are several years old that I still use.
Jello was a new one to me, also.
As I make homemade Jerky I cut the fat put in slow cooker and render the Tallow strain and put in muffin tins and freeze.once frozen pop them out and put in zip lock bags. These little flavor disks have a million and one uses.
I buy 50# bicarb (baking soda) from our local livestock feed mill. $17
Baking soda also cures heartburn and indigestion for me!
My 2 cents.
Didn’t see your post about the bugs until after I posted mine and was scrolling through - great minds think alike haha
Thanks Leisa!
My thought is that I may not eat it today but if you’re hungry you will!
I buy a few things that I like but may not eat all the time because they aren’t the healthiest but in an emergency all bets are off 😂
So true!
"It's not a diamond." Love it!
Over 30 years listening from season to season. Thanks.
Fruit in the jello! Mandarin oranges, fruit cocktail, pineapple tidbits....yay!!
Great list! Just a reminder on the potato flakes ... make sure that the ONLY ingredient is potato. No added oils, butter, etc. They will cause the potatoes to go rancid. Thanks for sharing the list!
Could you make a video showing us how many oxygen absorbers are needed per size of Mylar bags.
Don’t forget about oat groats. Put in instant pot. Use like rice. Fabulous flavor
If you want maple syrup without the weight, maple sugar is a good option as well.
@@melodyclark4347 this is great info. Thanks. I literally never thought of anything like this for my animals.
This Lady is Awesome. Informative. Great personality.
Wow, thank you!
Very helpful, thank you! I love canned goods since u don’t need tons of water
Mashed potato's is Irish Guacamole. :D
🤣
The veg oil in background shocked me.
Thank you for all the great info!! I worked at a seafood restaurant way back in 1978 and we made clam chowder and to thicken it we used instant potatoes , way better then flour!!
That is awesome!
I’ve always thickened my soups with potato flakes. It’s great!
@@mamabird2434 It's the best and way better taste
I thought that's what corn starch is used for.
What is corn starch for?
What do I use it for?
@@melmelbry5754mix it with warm water first to thicken, then add to soups.
Ok I need to go find the "lentils into tortilla bread" video. I'm intrigued.
It's so good!
Sams club for baking soda .. Arm and Hammer decreased the package, it was 15lbs now 13? And the price is up. 😢
Can you do a video on mylar bags and storage bins. How do you vacuum seal?
th-cam.com/video/HmZfQsKnJWk/w-d-xo.html
Leisa I always learn something new from you. I'm glad I didn't throw out my expired corn syrup😉
Good!
Go through my pmaylists . You can do it
Soy sauce … kikoman is brewed and not gmo. Check out additives / ingredients of other brands. Love this one.
Delicious!
When my kids were young undiscovered I could sneak extra protein into their marinara sauce bby blending in some cooked beans.
My formal living room is what I converted into a pantry. It’s not perfect but working well two years in
I package up smaller batches that I can use for trade if I need to.
Great information, I love the list because every item is the beginning of something great 🥂
How do you make Bourbon vanilla?
@@jessicaquiroz7178
Just put a vanilla bean that you’ve cut open and scraped the seeds from and put both the seeds and bean in a glass jar and cover with bourbon.
Apple cider vinegar also takes the sting out of bee stings. Almost immediately for me anyway. 😀
Turn them into homemade corn syrup... soooo yummy and better for you than the store❤
Can't wait to make more this season myself, eventhough got several jars left from last 😉
I'll have to Google it! I didn't know
How do u turn your cob into syrup?
Also, the dried cobs are fantastic "fuel" for grilling, cooking
How to?
@@dag118yes, there are a couple videos on YT on making it. Easier than I thought... except waiting for it to cook down
beans and chow chow! mmm, so good!
You can do it!
Great list, thank you for the reminder! I only use corn syrup to make caramels and pecan pie, but will definitely add a few bottles to my preps.
Thank you for talking a bit about hot temps(short term weather). I need a you tube channel about food storage & other prepping in a desert climate. Thnx much 💕
I’m working on my pantry room also, adding 3 more shelving units and trying to reorganize.
I haven't been able to find plain potato flakes in forever. It all has powdered butter and such added.
Yes, please do a video on baking soda! Thank you
Vodka and gin also can disinfect water for drinking. Work in an alcohol stove, too.
They also have powdered buttermilk! and powdered egg supplement!
I'm limited for space for stock up, however I store my beans in glass jars, sea salt as well. Mayonnaise jars make great storage for beans.
You can also grind rice for rice flour. So yet another grain that can be utilized in so many ways
Fruit in my jello? Yes, please! Pureed peaches & cream cheese in my jello?? Oh, yes ❤
Miso! Geliton for savory salads.. old fashioned yeah but again, use those left overs+ seasonings ,
Bless you and your family ❣️
The information you share is endless! Very wise and important information!
I appreciate that!
Yes, got 13 lb bags of baking soda in the pool care section at Walmart.
Baking soda mixed with water is good for cleaning battery terminals
Thanks!

I've just stocked up on organic beans and wheat berries, all organic, so I can safely sprout them. That really extends them. I feel safer.
Have you ever made bread with rice flour? Just as good! Yes fruit in jello.
Great reminders. I am now seriously thinking about removing the bed from our spare bedroom to expand our pantry. Currently it crowded into our laundry room on numerous shelves.
A spare bedroom is seems much better than the laundry. I would be worried that laundry products smell would be absorbed by the food.
