Just dropping in to say thanks again for the canning videos! I canned with my grandmothers, eons ago, and am now after 40+ years, reviving my skills. In the last month, I've put up chicken, chicken bone broth, vegetable broth, carrots, potatoes, and this weekend, added pork. My favorite part was needing another set of shelves for the pantry! Husbeast grumbled (just a little) about the cost of the Presto 23 quart canner. He opened a jar of carrots today and raved about how much better they tasted than the "store canned crap"!

I searched for this hoping I would find a trusted person canning ham and beans. I’m new to canning and want to can stuff like this for my husband. He’s a shift worker and it’s hard to put together a dinner meal at noon. Miss Lori at Whippoorwill Holler makes beans with cornbread dumplings and they look good.

I’m PA Dutch and dumplings in ham and bean soup is common here in eastern PA. When I make a ham I cook it in the oven with water in the pan. After we eat and I cut off most of the meat for leftovers I freeze the bone and broth that’s in the pan. When I make my soup I simmer the broth and bone with water till the meat falls off the bone. I add navy beans and cook them till done and at the end I make what we call drop dumplings. I mix flour, eggs, water and salt till I have a wet sticky dough then I drop clumps of the dough in the hot soup when they float they are done.

I was 1 of 9 so yes we grew up eating a lot of soups. When i was about 56 my older sister told me that we ate this because we were poor!!! Well I never thought of us as being poor. My parents canned every thing. Most food was done open kettle, tho they did also use a pressure cooker in after I had moved out. My Father gave me the pressure canner as he felt I would some day use it. This is my first year using it. It makes me think of all my parent's did to feed our family. I sure do miss them. Also I am the only one of my siblings. that preserve food. @Suttondaze you have taught me to have courage and I can't Thank you enough for all you have taught me, you are a BLESSING!!

I live in Phoenix Arizona and sadly ham hocks are so expensive and difficult to find here that it's very sad. My dad and my grandparents were from Missouri so hammocks were a common thing with Great Northern beans and to this day when I can get my hands Anthony ham hocks to put in my Great Northern beans oh my goodness am I happy. When I was a little girl my dad and my grandpa and I all got so excited when we got our hands on a whole ham hock and my grandma's ham and beans 😊. By the way that cartilage is incredible for your dogs and those bones are too because although they get softer they're thick and there's tons of bone marrow in them. I have service animals and the only kind of ham hocks I can ever get when I can get them are smoked and so they're nice dense hard bones and my American Eskimo dogs and my Chow chows absolutely adore them.

  • @Brineytoes

I have become very spoiled with not having to chop meat and veggies. The next food that I'll be canning is chicken because it's on sale at my local grocery store this week for $1.99/pound. So I'm going to go nuts! Then I'll be canning bean and ham soup.

Ps: try a different type of bean than you usually use. I grew up on it made with pinto beans & wasn't a fan. Then 1 day we were out of pintos & substituted Great Northern beans & now I won't use anything but GNs, the flavor really is that much better!

@@cathyrowe594 I always use great northern beans. I think it might depend on where you grew up as to what beans you use. I grew up in east central Illinois and we had ham and bean dinners as fund raisers like they do chili here in Missouri. Everyone used GN but in AZ they use pintos

I save the used jar lids and after the jars, lids and the rings are completely dry, I reassemble them for storage. I don't remember EVER having an issue with a chipped jar. reassembling the set not only protects the rim but also keeps them clean. They are ready to go anytime!

Thanks girly so much! I love how you teach. So clear, concise and fun. Your hubs and the pot though! 🤣 Ham and bean soup is my husband's favorite! I like to make it in the crockpot and can it from there. Guess I know what I'm doing tomorrow. 😋 I was able to get a ton of forjars lids so I'm thankful. I need to beef up my jars now. I keep seeing these folks getting cases and cases at garage sales! No such luck so far so Walmart it is. Thanks again and just so you know I really appreciate you! 💖

Hi Leisa, Louise from the UK here. Love your channel. I have some turkey in my freezer that I would like to make into yummy soup with beans. Apologies but I am new to pressure canning but loving it. I have dried harricot beans, the same we buy tinned with tomato sauce here in the UK. Will these, soaked prior to cooking, work with the turkey for this recipe. Apologies if I should have put this on the canning chat instead. Thanks so much.

Got to do this. Hubby likes a lot of meat in his bean soup, and I don't, so I add extra diced frozen ham when I fix his bowl. I like adding the dumplings to mine. Yum!

I purchased this same knife from Amazon after watching your video. The knife is awesome, so I ordered another to leave at Son's when I visit I have it . It stays so sharp, no need to sharpen. I'm trying to figure out did u use Pints or quarts in this video.
