It's funny because their success made them lazy. Look at the DSi, and then the Switch. Yup DSi has a browser, camera, social media, virtual console, backwards compatibility, and lots of genuinely fun games.

My ds & 3ds kept me lots of company while I was ill throughout two different pregnancies and was my way of quelling stress when after both, my girls both spent a week each in special care. It was the best way for me to keep my sanity!

Out of the two of us, I'm the only one still playing video games and I am now having fun with introducing my eldest daughter into my hobby (little sister will probably get her own 2ds next year). I don't think gamer girl is a tag applicable any more... More a gaming mum.

How in the world did you arrive at the idea of the Sega Pico being the "basis" of the DS's design when Nintendo literally made dual-screen Game and Watch units that look uncannily like DS's as far back as 1982? That's before Sega even entered the video game market.
You could count both as inspirations because the Pico also had a touch screen of sorts with a pen, just like the ds, plus it was dual screen too. The overall design was much more like the G&W dual screen units though

When he does videos about specific consoles games, he always makes them a little more human/humorous than usual. It's a nice change of pace from the usually very professional DYKG video. I still like how professional DYKG's videos are.

@Patbacknitro yeah, nintendo has never been beaten in the portable consolé market, even the 3ds managed to survive and thrive in a world dominated by smartphones somehow
@@carso1500 It was mainly because smartphones basically squandered their game market. There was a huge amount of hype for smartphones being the next platform for games, but then when microtransactions became more prevalent, several companies half-assed their games, and the quality control for mobile games was nonexistent its reputation fell into Hell. It most assuredly hasn't recovered form that either.
@Patbacknitro To be fair, Sony were making numerous dumb mistakes that affected the PSP (and the PS3 for that matter) and made them fall behind. Though indeed, even if things went perfectly for the PSP it would still have been devastated by the portable Tsar Bomb that was the DS.

I still firmly believe that will always be the snes. So many franchises either started or were the best on that system.
@@julianx2rl The 3DS might not have had as much buzz around it, since 3D is much less innovative than touch control, but despite that AND a weak-ass launch, it gradually went on to have an even better lineup than its predecessor.
You know, except how the only good 3DS Pokémon title was Super Mystery Dungeon.

The DS gave me so many great memories was I was younger tbh. Plus, the fact that it was compatible with GBA games was *legendary,* even if they couldn’t use sleep mode.

Kyle Hyde Thanks for the info, but I’m just pointing out how cool it was for 10-year old me to be able to play my old GBA games on my DS. Never got around to owning a DSi since my brother had one, and I just used it whenever he didn’t.

Bulma accidentally flashing Roshi which is already obscured by the DS itself is bad. Bulma shooting a 12 year old with a gun is a-okay though.
1. Goku was younger than 12 at this point. 2. Goku at that age, could deflect bullets off his bare skin without even trying. I doubt this is an issue.

Scribblenauts is one of my favorite DS games and I love Konami's games.
I never knew you could spawn Alucard, Solid Snake and the Gradius ship in the japanese version of the game.

Iwata was president of Nintendo in 2004, not Yamauchi; the latter had already been retired for a year and a half by then.
Always enjoy learning more about the DS. Still my favorite system and something I rarely do more than a week without playing. Currently finishing up Mega Man ZX advent today!

As someone whose first console was a NES, the whole perspective of this video blows my mind. The idea of "growing up" with the DS just seems wild to me. Makes me feel old.
Same here. Except I grew up with the Atari 2600, but I still saw Nintendo arrive to save the day after the crash. But still. Edit: apparently the word doesn't have the same meaning in America, over here a spastic is an offensive term for someone with severe mental health problems like Downs Syndrome.

The DS, the console family that finally ended the handheld wars.
Sony tried to fight, but finally in 2019, the Vita fell.
And now, it’s finally ended. Nintendo wins.
The Vita fell because it was cost-prohibitive and poorly marketed.
If they'd done away with the 3g nonsense, used cheaper screens, and replaced the touch pads with cheaper triggers, they could have probably knocked off a good bit of the cost AND lowered the release SRP.
PS2 ports and hd re-releases of PSP games ala WiiU -> Switch re-releases would have buffered its library enough to stay competitive during its first year.
And of course, using God damned micro SD cards instead of that stupid, proprietary memory stick format. I think the potential piracy problem would have dwarfed in comparison to the massively increased popularity it could have had.
I'm sorry for ranting, everything about the Vita pisses me off.

The PSP was the only serious competition Nintendo ever had on the handheld market. Game Gear was tiny compared to Game Boy and the Wonderswan... was only in one country.

Don't forget the Lynx, which was briefly a strong contender due to how absurdly OP it was. But it turned out the market wanted cheaper handhelds rather than more powerful handhelds, and the Gameboy stomped it. (Sega REALLY should have learned a lesson from that.)

The MindQuiz thing really is unfortunate. As a British person I had no clue that word wasn't offensive in other englishspeaking countries and is just seen as a completely non disability related term for "hyperactive". Apparently the origin of it as an insult came from a particular charity in Britain that got a lot of hatred for trying to raise awareness of a disability involving motor spasms, and assholes turned the disability's name into a negative slur. Basically the same as how the r-word used to be the socially accepted scientific term for that disability, but it's interesting how the sudden redefinition into a negative context only happened within one country this time.

The Sega Pico was my family's first console! It eventually broke, but we loved it a lot. It was probably one of my first introductions to Sonic too (that or The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon).
