    Aside from the obvious issues like no Galaxy 2 and the Limited release window, the only real problem I have with 3D All Stars is the lack of extra bonus stuff. As you said the soundtrack is really nice but it's just the tip of the iceberg. No art gallery, concept artwork, developer interviews, bonus games or minigames, unlockables, no cool little museum modes or anything. It was just so bare bones compared to so many other game collections out there on the market.

      Everything is the same as the D.S. release

    Fun fact: the weird filtered look on the textures in the Wii U virtual console port is the anti aliasing they used on the textures. If you don’t upscale a small resolution texture BEFORE putting it through antialiasing and instead upscale with antialiasing, the texture appears weird and blurry. You’d have to force it to upscale with nearest neighbor mode only if you wanted a clean, regular pixel look instead of a blurry look (there are some wiiu mods for the virtual console that do that I think)

    On the whole thing of them not putting too much effort into this release, Mario 64’s textures are updated on the fly, as the rom is loaded. The folder in the files that these updates textures come from, is literally named “lazy texture replace” so that’s something.

    • @Mr.Welbig
      @Mr.Welbig  ปีที่แล้ว +61

      Yeah I think I remember Digital Foundry mentioning something like that. Most of the textures don't look any better than the bilinear filtering you get most of the time you increase resolution. But for those like the HUD, Mario's "M" symbol, and Bowsers switch panels from Lethal Lava Land then it does look better. Still lame af on Nintendo's part.

    • @GuyDude-hk8uy
      @GuyDude-hk8uy ปีที่แล้ว +82

      Just to play devil's advocate (though I doubt this is actually the reason) "lazy" is a programming term that can mean incrementally, as-needed; rather than eagerly, meaning right now, all at once, immediately. It's not a very popular term, mostly reserved for functional programmers, but you never know.

    Nintendo consistently does so little that when we get lacking products people are very quick to act as apologists because that's the norm for the company. I think the notion that we shouldn't expect more because it's "unrealistic" is insane. This is NINTENDO and this is the MARIO franchise. They have all the money and the talent they need to make something outstanding, and we have modern remaster collections like crash and spyro to compare to. Disregarding the limited release and lack of polish/options on release (irreversible camera controls were a major deal breaker), this collection, as is, should have been worth 30-40 dollars on release. It's so pathetically low effort, and not including galaxy 2 is unforgivable considering how unbelievably acclaimed that game is, and it's now unable to be purchased unless it's secondhand.

    • @Mr.Welbig
      @Mr.Welbig  ปีที่แล้ว +65

      I hear you man, but that's Nintendo's track record for ya. Think about Mario's 25th anniversary when they dumped a SNES rom on a Wii disc and proceeded to sell it at full price. I really don't want to say people "shouldn't" expect more, but at this point Nintendo has made their intentions quite clear. What gets me is the inconsistency. Because while for the most part Nintendo does fuck all when releasing a "remastered" collection, they do once in a blue moon when all the planets align, totally overhaul a game for a new release. Link's Awakening, Prime Remastered, and now Mario RPG. But those seem extremely few and far between.

It should have been 20$ or free with Nintendo online expansion. They really should have remastered galaxy and sunshine in the way they did Metroid prime. Only change (gameplay wise) the stuff that needs to be changed (like adding twin stick controls to Metroid) and then making the graphics 100x better. The Metroid remaster is literally 100% faithful to the og while still being better in basically every way. And people didn’t care they charged 40$ cause it was so well done, they could have done that and sold them for 40$ each easily but they didn’t. It’s not a huge ask when it’s Mario’s 35th anniversary. The lazy port even had the SNES controller visual representation in the Wii game play! That's why, comparatively, the Kirby Wii collection is at least 50 to 60 % more sold complete than the Mario All Stars port complete sold asking price. Well too, that's a quick estimation of varying degrees, but Kirby's collection is always more for the good effort put forth!

      @@Mr.Welbig There's literally nothing wrong with a wrong collection. It's game preservation and makes older games available on modern hardware. I think it's also a problem when a game gets a majorly overhauled remake for a modern console and there's no legitimate way to get the original, so the original version gets lost to time and gets replaced by the new version.

    @ToastyMann ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The collection itself after some patches is a perfectly FINE way to play these games. It's at least a good alternative if you don't have access to OG hardware or unofficial emulation.
    HOWEVER, what I hate about 3D All-Stars is the principle of it all. Nintendo putting out a product like this, charging $60, and scoring MILLIONS of copies sold has basically shown the rest of the industry that quality does not matter when re-releasing old games. As long as it has the skin of a popular franchise super glued onto it, it'll make bank. It's why we've seen so many lackluster or downright BAD re-releases of classic games in the past few years like Sonic Origins, GTA The Trilogy: Definitive Edition, Sony's really poor PS1 emulation on the PS5, Nintendo's very own poor N64 emulation on the Switch, and now we have the Metal Gear Solid Master Collection, which can't even be played on PC without a controller, and runs MGS2 at 30fps on the Switch when the PS2 version was at 60.
    3D All-Stars is alright, but Nintendo has told the rest of the industry that they don't have to try. We're going into an age of really bad re-releases, and it's basically Nintendo's fault. Ironically, they've been cleaning up their act with Metroid Prime Remastered and the Pikmin ports. But everyone else is diving even further below the bar of quality we should expect as paying customers. This is why we really shouldn't demonize ROM downloading and unofficial emulation. Why should we give these companies $60 for a product worse than an emulator you can download for free?

      @spimbles I always preferred it because it's got a wide variety of challenges (despite the reused bosses) that drastically change the levels or focus on different areas each time. I find the pure collectathon "any order is valid" aspect of 64 stars and Odyssey moons to cheapen the level design. I think the blue coins are a good system the same way pieces of hearts work in Zelda, even if there should be something of a checklist or hint system. Plus, it's the only Mario game that feels like a real place, each level is coherent to its own world, instead of "generic grasslands > desert > waterscape > ice world" type of leveling the series typically has. And as you progress through the levels, the NPCs actually grow and change with you on your adventure. It feels closer to something the rpgs would use despite being a mainline game.

    When playing SM64 through this collection, I encountered a glitch I had never seen in the N64 version. In Dire Dire Docks, there is a mission where you need to jump from moving poles in the ceiling to grab the red coins. However when I selected the mission from the menu, and made my way to the room, the poles were not loading in, and Bowser's sub was still there. It is supposed to be gone after you clear the first mission, which I did. The Sub stayed there no matter which mission I chose, and even after making sure I selected the red coin mission 4 times, every time I reached the room, the game was acting as if I was doing mission one. I had to leave and do some stars in a different level, because it was impossible to clear due to necessary parts of the level not spawning in. I have been playing this game pretty much my entire life, and I have never seen that happen before. This all happened TODAY, so it isn't an oversight that got patched like the issues in Sunshine.

    it's very simple: short amount of time to buy those games before they get delisted creates fear of missing out which then causes people to buy an overpriced, outdated product they don't need. corporate greedy strategies in a capitalistic world. many things nintendo does is "do the minimum and collect maximum profit", apparently it works because people keep buying and this 3d all stars collection was as far as i know a bestseller...

  • @NCozy
    @NCozy ปีที่แล้ว +1

    To me this whole project just feels more like a tech demo for Nintendos emulation on switch than it does a proper remaster for these games. There's a sheer lack of extra content here, the soundtracks are cool because people can rip them and upload the tracks to TH-cam but in terms of content for the game itself I don't think most people are gonna be listening to these tracks directly from the switch. And that is it in terms of extras, the UI is kinda barebones and they didn't even compose a single new song for this game, not even for the menu. The presentation is so simple and all you get are the games. And when all you get are the games then the problems with the remastering jobs start to pop up and the inconsistency between each game. Like why does Mario Sunshine gets widescreen and Mario 64 doesn't? And just the quality between each game is kinda noticable, Mario 64 being the worst, Sunshine being better but not perfect and Galaxy easily being the most impressive version. At this point 3D All Stars isn't even the best way to play Mario 64 on switch. The version on NSO has a more updated emulator which has stuff like improved input latency over the earlier version used in 3D all stars, not to mention the subjective changes like how the version of the game is less altered than the version on 3d all stars. But even looking past that there's also a native homebrew port that blows both versions out of the water with noticably better input latency, higher resolution, better framerate, and redrawn textures as opposed to the upscaled ones on 3D All Stars. I mean if you look at this game at face value then yeah they're completely serviceable versions of these games but the lack of polish really takes what could be an amazing compilation to just one that gets the job done, and yeah maybe my expectations are high they didn't market this game to be anything more than what it turned out to be but I kinda expect more from Nintendo than just the bare minimum especially for a full price product.

    I think that Nintendo taking it off the eShop just shows that they did this as none other than an act of fan service. They're fully aware that they could have better optimized these games re: 60 fps for Mario 64 etc. It clearly isn't a release that they were super proud of so they kept it as a quick celebration of Mario for us and then got rid of it. It never felt lazy to me, just a cool piece of collectors memorabilia.

      Making it a limited release that would boost sales by the end of that fiscal year via FOMO without having to worry about a lower quality package of theirs staying on the eshop makes it seem like fan service? You acknowledge that they should know they can do better and you think it’s a good thing and it was all done for the fans instead of relatively easy profit? I genuinely don’t see how you’d end up with this perspective.

    THANK YOU for that point about the original All-Stars and how it's not that different from what they did with 3D All-Stars, I've been saying that from the beginning. All-Stars is great but people do give it too much credit and exaggerate what it was. I've seen so many people call All-Stars "Ground-up remakes" and then accuse 3D All-Stars of _not_ being ground-up remakes (which personally I did not want at all in Galaxy's case anyway, an upres'd port with almost no changes is all I wanted there), even though actually, the original All-Stars games aren't remotely ground-up remakes at all. They're direct ports running almost identical code to the point that most glitches still exist to some degree, and heck, all the _unused_ stuff in Mario 3 that was in the NES version is also in All-Stars completely unchanged, even the NES debug mode is still present despite them making a new one for All-Stars. None of that would be there if they were remakes.
    All-Stars was just a collection of ports with upgraded visuals and sound, and that's exactly what 3D All-Stars also is, except that because the games in 3D All-Stars are, well, 3D, and are more modern, the standard for that kind of upgrade is fundamentally different and requires less, as the sound doesn't really need to be touched anymore unlike with the NES games, and you can't just swap in new sprites for the visuals like you could with the 2D titles. So doing a similar kind of upgrade with the 3D games was always just fundamentally not going to look as wow-ing to the average viewer despite it actually being kinda comparable...at least mostly (because O.G. All-Stars _did_ require effort to it thanks to all the new 16-bit tilesets and all).

      @@varietychan Yeah but the bug fixes and physics changes were minor (if I'm not mistaken only Mario 1 and Lost Levels even had physics changes, and they were just slight, Mario 3 at least I'm pretty sure is basically identical). My point with bringing up the bugs is that the bugs that did return alone prove that they're not ground-up remakes at all. Abd the redone sprites and preview screens and all fall into the visual improvements category and they're not particularly big additions (Mario 3 doesn't even have them). Doesn't really change anything I said.

    • @legoboy7107
      @legoboy7107 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@baerenonkel Yeah, but functionally that doesn't really change much about what the product is like. Every rerelease of Mario 64 (DS version aside) has been emulated anyway. While they _could_ have native-ported all 3 games (assuming they have the original source code for both 64 and Sunshine which they probably do) and that would have been better, at least if they were to bother to make additional enhancements besides what they did, functionally it doesn't really change my original point much at the end of the day about it not being _that_ different from what the OG All-Stars was in practice.
      Also, they're in different scenarios, the SNES had some very similar architecture to the NES since it was initially supposed to be backwards-compatible, and so porting the NES games would be way simpler and easier than trying to somehow emulate that, whereas none of that is the case with 3D All-Stars and the Switch so in 3D's case emulation would be the simpler route probably, so even then both collections took the simplest ways out to rerelease their games, it's just that the scenarios were different so the easier methods were different too.

    Yeah, I'd say it was that bad. Expecting full remakes a la the original All Stars may not have been realistic, but the absolute bare minimum should have been everything running at 60fps, in widescreen, in 1080p. I know you say that you actually prefer running N64 games at their original resolutions, but clearly that wasn't Nintendo's priority given that SM64 runs at 720p here, and they update the other releases to 1080p and to have widescreen, so they clearly don't care about "preserving the original experience" in general here. Also, to reply to what you said about resolution, I really don't think a sub 480p image blown up to 1080p looks any closer to the original experience then it being rendered at 1080p does.
    It lacking Galaxy 2 is just an additional low blow, and it being a timed release is just spiteful and insulting, and I say that without the slightest bit of hyperbole or flippance: The ports were already below what even I would have expected as a worst case senarcio, it already lacked a major 3d mario game (the numbered sequel to a game IN the collection, at that), and on top of that they felt the need to nickle and dime people with FOMO. It's just gross, and I hesitate to say any amount of shame or mockery thrown at Nintendo over it is too great.
    And then, yeah, there's also no SM64DS or actual gameplay/content or many QoL additions or redone visuals. Again, I didn't expect those either, but just to re-state to further stress how the collection manages to miss the mark on basically anything anybody wanted beyond "Includes some 3d mario games".
    Are the games still playable and can you have fun with them? yeah, obviously, and there's definitely a metric you can use via that to say the collection is worth the price of admission: You're still getting 3 great games in one package. But I think that really removes a bunch of important context from the situation and just enables Nintendo's anti consumer practices and downright contempt (again, sounds extreme, but how else do you describe the FOMO release?) for some of it's fans.
    Lastly, regarding your point about 64's controls, even as somebody who grew up with the game on 64, I found it's controls to be bad. It's not the oversenstivity I find most frustrating, it's the opposite: It's that it takes Mario ages to go from a stop to a full run or to shift directions sharply while running, where his turn arc is so wide and gradual. People complain about the controls in Sonic Adventure and SA2 being too sensitive, but at least with that senstivity and instant turning and acceleration comes extreme responsiveness once you've mastered them.

    I’m just angry at the fact that they made little to no improvements to 64. It had so much potential, but they just upscaled the textures and called it a day. Sunshine and Galaxy were kind of limited with improvements, but I can excuse that because the games already ran well with good graphics.

    Super Mario 3D All-Stars to me is such an amazing game, and I agree that speedrunning it is a little difficult with the small bugs removed and with sunshine’s controls being very different, it is still so fun to play solely for nostalgia. When I heard it was going to be a limited release I bought 2 copies, a hard copy and digital (sad I didn’t know about the special coins you could have gotten until about a year ago) and this was definitely so Nintendo could try and shill a bit more money but I’ll still keep my hard copy sealed because I feel like soon it’s going to be looked at as an investment like how a bunch of GameCube games now, you have to pay out the ass for a copy, let alone a complete, sealed new copy.

    Recently found this channel and quite enjoyed your lookback on 3D All Stars. Its far from being a “good” port of Mario’s 3D adventures, but I bought this game back in 2020 for the simple reason of convenience. Having the ability to play 64, Sunshine and Galaxy on the go and in one package for me was well worth the buy considering I hadn’t played all these games before, and I’m one for actually playing games on an actual hardware (unless if the game is straight up impossible for me to play). With better optimization, development times, and removing a limited release window, I honestly wish I can see game franchises get a Mario 3D All Stars treatment for a porting collection. Like for example, making an Adventure trilogy collection by porting SA1, SA2, and Heroes to a modern console with updated optimization. Because despite Nintendo coming off as a bit scummy in some regards, I still find that in some of their ports and variations of games do they actually put in some love and attention.
    And besides, at least 3D All Stars is a hell of a lot better… than a certain Sonic Colours Remake…

    I enjoyed hearing your take on this collection, but when it comes to Super Mario 64 I really disagree in some parts, or just don't get your reasoning.
    13:56 why present this as some obvious, foregone conclusion, when Nintendo have shown way more care and ambition with these things in the past? And I really wasn't expecting a huge remake, or for them to include the DS version, or anything massive. But I really did hope they could do some of the things emulators have long allowed.
    60fps should've been included, because it feels much better, as you mentioned.
    If the reason to keep it 30fps was indeed because they "strive to maintain the original experience as much as possible" they could have still made it an option. But I don't find that reason believable in the first place. Apparently a resolution bump to 720p, and even using AI of all things to upscale the hud were completely fine? That makes no sense.
    They should've made it render in 1080p by default, and have an option to render it in lower resolutions (including the original), to appease players that wanted the original experience. Perhaps they could have even made that LOD model optional as well, so it doesn't distract you at a higher resolution (though I personally don't care about that).

    • @Mr.Welbig
      @Mr.Welbig  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I really don't agree with the notion that Nintendo has done much better in the past. Ocarina of Time Master Quest (And to that extend the GameCube promotional disc) was just a emulator rom compilation. The Kirby 20th Anniversary Collection, while presenting itself much more celebratory than 3D All Stars, and including a plethora of bonus supplementary material, still is just a emulator rom compilation, and mostly handled by HAL I believe. The Mario Advance series portrayed a lot more effort imho, but those have also scene backlash due to hardware limitations. The Zelda 3DS remakes, and Wii U remasters are really the only examples I can think of but even then Nintendo out sourced development for those titles. Once they released Virtual Console that's been their default retro rerelease format for years. And Virtual Console had plenty of detractors during it's heyday for not competing with fan emulators. The most they did was offer button remapping and save states on Wii U. Then they discontinued it in favor of Switch Online which also has scene plenty of detractors for not competing with fan emulation efforts. If emulation is available, Nintendo typically does jack all as history shows. So yes, I'm afraid that the expectations for Nintendo to do a 3D Mario compilation were always erroneously high. I'm sadden that so many (including myself) were disappointed, but that's just how Nintendo is for releasing their retro games.
