Transitioning from a technical role to project management can be challenging, but leveraging team updates for client communication is a proactive strategy
I am a month into a new project manager roll and even though my past jobs contained elements of project management, this is my first solely manager position. This week I am learning fairly quickly that I need to alter my communication structure with managers and sometimes it is like drawing blood from a stone in terms of replies to my questions.
Congratulations on your new role! Seeing that you need to make some changes is your first step toward the win! Wishing you all the best and great success with your current project. Cheers!
Transitioning to a dedicated project manager role comes with its unique challenges, especially in communication. Persistence and adaptability are key-consider adjusting your approach to suit different managerial styles, and don't hesitate to follow up strategically to ensure responses. Building strong rapport and clarity in communication will enhance project efficiency over time. Keep up the proactive effort!
I still don’t understand. A project manager for what type of job? I kind of understand the material covered from a military leadership perspective. But how do you fit my set of skill sets (included everything that you covered) into the actual type of project in the civilian world. Can you provide a video breaking it “Barney style”. For example, “Joe is a going to build his resume, interview and accept a job as a project manager dealing with landscaping (this area can be changed), but he provided his 5 year experience as a landscaper to now accept the task of recruiting landscapers, assigning their tasks, assessing their performance as well as understanding the future landscaping projects, getting his higher ups at ease by letting them know that you know what you are doing. Then providing them with updates on the progress of the projects, etc…” this could be applied into any other type of areas as a project to manage, right?
Great video explaining what a project manager does. Very smart tip about setting out strict rules for project updates with the team right at the start of the project...get everyone on board and going in the right direction from the start.
Making sure a project manager starts off on the right foot is key to a successful project. This way everyone is clear right from the start about the expectations and rules. Thanks for watching, Cheers!
Amazed with how helpful this was! Thanks for answering the question, "what does a project manager do?" So important to understand the role of the PM before you step into it.
There is so much responsibility put on a project manager so knowing what a project manager does is important for all the project team members and is also good information for those considering a career in project management. Thanks for taking the time to tune in, Cheers!
Thanks so much for sharing! Organization is key. I worked with project managers who we so unorganized they had no idea who was doing what and what needed to be done. It's extremely stressful for the whole team.
I agree, a stressful team will never be able to be a productive team and can make the entire project difficult to complete. It's essential to any project that the project manager is organized from the get go. Thanks for tuning in, Cheers!
Great video. As a Project Management professional myself as well as a professional coach, everything you say resonates with me and I often think that coaching and project management overlap more than people think!
Thanks, I'm glad I found you. I'm a Sales Enablement manager and I've taken on a very large re-organization / policy update "project" for my organization and we don't have access to a PM, so I'm playing the role of the PM as well as the role of the sales enablement expert hoping to get this project rolling. I can already tell I'll be leaning on your content to help with managing the project!

This is so useful! I am a PM who shift (somehow) into a doer/BA role. I am looking to tighten up my boundaries and be more effective at actually managing the project.
Guess it depends on the department u work what’s their expectation of a PM. Sometime they give a PM title but want more than a pure PM. I myself r PM title but also does BA/Product. Although u r not expected to be a SME on it but with those skills set, definitely helps with understanding and managing the project timeline and result better. Sometime if is just PM role, the expectation of deliverables and schedule doesn’t make sense to business and tech team. Especially if the department is a small one and resource is limited, then a PM role will likely be doing more job title.
Woow!! .. it accelerate my vibration to deliver knowledge to the team and create the work atmosphere around my work place and secure project circumstances. Huge thanks Adriana!

Great video ! Got to know about the major roles of a Project Manager in an organization that helps them to run successful projects.Definitely, it will also help me to be a good leader or manager in my career in project management. Also, some of these responsibilities are very useful in our day-to-day life. It is very helpful for me and others to watch such videos of yours to gain more knowledge about project management or other programs. Thank You !!!
Hi Adriana, Great Video. I have a question: I am currently stuck between doing my scrum master or project management certification. What is your opinion on this Thanks in advance
Hi Oyewale…thanks for your question. Let me ask you, what industry do you work in? Knowing this will allow me to better answer your question. In the meantime, here is my general recommendation: Getting your PMP will always be a good thing, no matter the industry you work in. Plus the fundamentals apply to all PM methods, including agile. Getting your scrum master certification is great if you work in software and if your organization supports agile ways of working. Hope this helps you in making your decision. PS….one more option is you can do both. Do the scrum certification and take my practical project management course which will teach you the foundational items based on PMP frame work. This will give you the best of both worlds. Go to: www.AdrianaGirdler.com to check out the course. Cheers. 🙂
Thanks for watching! Simple…you call them out on it. You can do this respectfully. It is especially easy if you got them to sign the charter and you put expectations in the document. Just don’t ignore it. Cheers.

So does one need to study something at university to become a project manager? I have worked 4 years in retail, and this sounds like a good career, but I haven't been able to get into university.
Hi, Leonardo. There aren’t specific degrees for project management but most employers require a degree of some sort. I have and engineering degree and go into project management by asking to be part of them then one I had experience asking to lead one. We get the responsibilities of a PM but what site are they actually on warehouse, restaurant construction,.... Or is a project manager just a project manager and then they manages the project?
A project manager is a specific role....like a teacher, doctor, etc. Depending on the organization, they may have a dedicated role for a project manager...others may combine it with other activities. When I was doing engineering work, everything I did was a project but I was called an engineer. I hope this helps.
Hi Adriana, Just a quick question, in reference to your SlayProjectManagement course, is it pre-recorded videos or live interactive session where attendees can ask questions along the way?
Hi Albie....it’s a combo approach. The lessons are pre-recorded so you can take them at your own pace. I provide all the templates in downloads and have a live FaceBook group where you can ask question as they arise and I will coach you through it.
Go team! In my project the client is constantly trying to hurt himself (metaphorically) we ready know best practices but they have this illusion speeding things up by jumping hoops that we know is going to bite them later on. It has been a bit frustrating.
That’s definitely sounds frustrating. I wish you great success for this project even though it sounds like you have some hurdles to overcome. Thanks for watching! Cheers!

Applyed for conception job, got hired as a PM 😱 Fresh out of school. I'm kinda hyped to be honest 🤓
Danny, that is amazing! Congratulations, and you should be hyped. What an accomplishment. Wishing you great success. Cheers!
Absolutely Steve I couldn't agree more. There is a definite overlap between coaching and project management. Thanks so much for watching, Cheers!
Just thinking to get in to this field
Ok this was actually so helpful, I never really knew haha! :)

Thanks for watching. Glad that this video was helpful in explaining what project managers do. Cheers!
@moores1478, I am glad you found my channel as well. Sounds like you have a big job on your hands. I do have a new course that will be launching mid Sept called SLAY Project Management Pro which is a coaching program lead by myself. Feel free to check it out when time permits.

This is so useful! I am a PM who shift (somehow) into a doer/BA role. I am looking to tighten up my boundaries and be more effective at actually managing the project.
Glad it was helpful! Thanks so much for watching, cheers!
Hi Adrien I am starting as a PM for a Solar company it is small projects and some will be larger when they come along.
That’s wonderful! Wishing you great success, cheers!

What is your opinion whether it is good or bad ?
Hi am thinking of doing a apprenticeship in project management. One Question does project management an office job or do you go on site to?thanks

@@AdrianaGirdler hi
I watched and realized that I am basically a PM in my team except of the paper pushing stuff, but that's only because we don't have an actual position of PM... >_
PM tools are used in other positions too. Engineering, leadership, planning, EHS maintenance....
Love everything that was said in the video, trying to implement these strategies asap
Fantastic! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Cheers!
I love your energy 😄 Hope I can be half as energetic when I start my career as a PM.
Thank you, and thanks for watching, cheers!
Hi Adriana,
Great Video.
I have a question: I am currently stuck between doing my scrum master or project management certification.
What is your opinion on this
Thanks in advance
Hi Oyewale…thanks for your question. Let me ask you, what industry do you work in? Knowing this will allow me to better answer your question. In the meantime, here is my general recommendation:
Getting your PMP will always be a good thing, no matter the industry you work in.
Cheers. 🙂
Hi Adriana, what do you do when you set guidelines up front, but people continue to not meet your guidelines?
Thanks for watching! Simple…you call them out on it. You can do this respectfully. It is especially easy if you got them to sign the charter and you put expectations in the document. Just don’t ignore it. Cheers.
Hey Adriana! I have been teaching for 6 years and I am looking to make a career change and project management sparked my interest. Do you think that my teaching skills would transfer well to this career? What advice would you have for getting started? What certifications would you suggest? Hi Lekeatra. Your skills would definitely transfer well into a Project Management career. Here is a video that will answer all of your questions. Wishing you all the best. Cheers!

Thank you for this! I'm currently majoring in Construction Management, which I love, but I'd like a life outside of work. How many hours do project mangers work? How often are you one site? Thank you for this wonderful presentation!
I am happy to hear you are enjoying your program. The time spent onsite will vary depending on the project and any hiccups that may happen along the way. As far as how many hours worked in a week, it’s like any other job. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching, cheers!
I arranged a picnic in our community a month ago. Without any prior experience, i made plans. I managed everything well. I gave responsibilities to right people and managed everyone well.

It’s also important to learn the practical side of project management. I have a course, Slay Project Management that would teach you that. Here is the link if you want to check it out. You are so very welcome! Make sure to check out today’s new video at 9:15 on project Managers Responsibilities 😊 Thanks for watching, cheers!
@@AdrianaGirdler yes it did thank you
I loved to watch the lesson.
Cheers!
@@AdrianaGirdler Thanks!!! I guess I need to work on my communication skill to make them understand why is wrong and why is better for them on the long run to do it right. Although it feels like I shouldn't have to explain why doing things right is the right way hahaha. we have a procedure already in place just follow it haha. but that's what you get when you work with humans, especially the ones that feel have power.
