Great topic today! Alcohol seems to be an ingredient that has gotten a bad reputation, but as you pointed out it's needed for absorption and other applications Happy Friday! almost the weekend!! 🙂🍁
Can you please talk about the molecular weight of HA!!! I’ve heard low molecular weight causes inflammation. You are the only TH-camr I trust I need this info from you! Lol.
Great video! Having acne prone skin though I have to say that finding the right moisturizer relying on “trial and error” and “every formulation is different”... is a NIGHTMARE! I wish it was as simple as just having a list of ingredients to avoid!! 😩
I’ve heard another dermatologist say that you should use hydrators instead of moisturizers, because your pores won’t produce their own oils if they sense a heavy moisturizer on top. I’m not sure what to make of this and I’d love to hear your thoughts!
515ashleyann she’s talked about the importance of occlusive products (moisturizers) before, such as locking in the moisture, prevent epidermal water loss etc. But when you put it in terms of hydrators vs moisturizers , I’d love to know as well !
I have oily face and my face likes lighter moisturizers like cerave pm. Whenever I would try a thicker cream, an hour or less later, my face would look like I just washed my face with thick layer of cooking oil. So I think it depends on the person?
Hydrator? 1. Humectant-attract and bind water. 2. Moisturizer-“seals he deal”, stops water loss and helps restore skin barrier, aiding in healing. 3. Emollients -makes the skin feel smooth, reducing roughness and scaliness.
People are putting too much stigma on alcohol without realizing they use alcohol on their face unknowingly. I appreciate this video for proper explanation regarding alcohol. Now I know which I should avoid and not instead of totally avoiding them.
Thank you Dr Dray for your in depth review of Alcohols in skin care. Was just researching my skincare ingredients and was getting very confused since I have combo, acne prone sensitive skin. Thanks again!!
Happy Friday! Very happy to learn more about the kinds of alcohol in skin care! As I use Cerave moisturizer and I only have benefits, fatty alcohol is part of my daily routine. I believe that every product is truly personal and you have to "listen to your skin". I like to know the ingredients of the products I use and you are my resource person. Thank you for this video!
Like a few months ago i discovered one of my products had alcohol debat. and I freaked out but than I thought about it for a minute, and said to myself "I've been using this for like 2 years now with positive results, so why should I care?" and to this day one of my favorite products. Skincare is very personal so usually you just have to find out and test things for yourself.
While I know this isn't the case for everyone, I can't help but notice how much products with fatty alcohols contributed to my acne (Cerave in the tub was unfortunately how I started figuring that out, I have NEVER had more painful breakouts than the week I tried to use it). Ended up auditing a bunch of my products to see what had fatty alcohols in it, and slowly replaced them out for products that didn't have them. Made a WORLD of difference causing fewer breakouts, and much less painful ones. Whether or not they will break me out 100% of the time, I'm not sure, but every time I try to dabble in a product that has it really far down the ingredient list, it will still cause an uptick in acne like clockwork. Products without the fatty alcohols you mention can be reallllly hard to find though, would you be able to help put together a product list of ones you recommend that would be good for someone trying to avoid them? Moisturizers and tinted mineral sunscreens tend to be the toughest for me to find :/ Thank you!!
I have the same problem. The hardest for me is to find nice and affordable moisturizers without fatty alcohols. I can only use Clinique moisture surge as it doesn't break me out. However it's not moisturizing enough for my dry skin plus it's expensive for me
This is such a helpful video, thank you Dr Dray! I think Mineral spf filters are far more topically drying than the typical product containing alcohol in the first 5 ingredients. At least for me personally. I haven’t used Mini products with alcohol in them but the ones I’ve tried have all been very moisturizing and elegant at the same time.
Wow I’m so glad you made this video !!! We talked about this last week in your comments I wish they weren’t so drying when it comes to dry/dehydrated skin
I love fatty alcohols in my conditioners and skin care (very dry skin, dry hair lengths). I do try to avoid straight up alcohol (often in more natural products). I can't for instance put a deodorant with alcohol on my armpits as it burns. In fact I can't tolerate alcohol on any other part of my body. It has to do with my health condition (CRPS, complex regional pain syndrome) as my nerves are all out of whack, not to mention my entire nervous system. It is what it is. I have been paying attention to ingredients for a long time. Thank you for this video. I found it very useful. :)
@@DrDrayzday thank you so much! I think it is amazing that you know the condition, as it is a rare disease. Not many doctors know about it, in my experience! It started in my knees for me (dashboard injury) and by the time they discovered it, we were almost 3 years further in time and it had spread to both legs fully. It could no longer be treated successfully. I just have pain relief these days and was diagnosed with severe, disabling, chronic CRPS. I have had this since age 23, and am 47 now. I have good doctors now and an excellent pain program (gabapentin/buprenorphine). The pain is horrendously high.

Hi lady. THANK YOU, THANK YOU♡♡ yes, I am one of the rare humans that is actually "extremely sensitive" (allergic) to almost all types of ALCOHOLs. I drive my drs crazy, but they understand. As a child I never understood, but I never really got to wear makeup growing up. Drs, didn't explain very well, they just gave me the ALCOHOL names and said "good luck kid". THANK YOU for explaining it, and why it's in products for other people. I always greatly appreciate your long hard research time and video efforts ♡♡
I try to avoid them in other skincare products but in sunscreens its impossible especially for oily skin because they are the only sunscreens that don't feel super heavy ..happily im not sensitive to it and it doesn't dry my skin 🌞
*Dr. Dray could you please do a video on over exfoliated skin and how to heal it! Even though I have a solid skincare routine now thankfully because of you... and had a pretty good skincare in my teens, I still have the damage left from years of using harsh scrubs/exfoliants almost daily thinking it was helping my dry flaky skin🤦♀️...and because of that certain areas on my skin now has this odd look and feel to it almost wax like.*
Yes, it is confusing. Bisabolol also known as levomenol which is a monocyclic sesquiterpene alcohol is supposed to be good for sensitive skin. Go figure ???????

Thank you for clarifying and explaining this! So helpful! I was avoiding all alcohols in products but now I know what to look for as better or not as good for me! Thanks!
I will say as someone with extremely sensitive skin as well as eczema and rosacea. I have found avoiding fatty alcohols altogether for me personally has helped. My skin flares up a lot less and is less irritated. It makes it a lot harder for me to find products I can use as I also have normal - dry skin. This is a thread I’ve seen amongst other people who have eczema and rosacea as well.
@@tayandkel00 it’s really tough. I honestly don’t really have a go to solution yet. For my face I find I usually have to use moisturizers for oily skin as they tend not to have fatty alcohols and I use moisturizing oils to make up for the lack of hydration. Fatty alcohols are usually in moisturizers, particularly ones that are supposed to be super hydrating. My eczema flare ups on my body usually aren’t that bad and are mild so I don’t worry about that too much so no help there unfortunately
You are amazing, you've helped me so much with my skin! I have a question tho, how important would you say that the PH of products are? I was looking at a new hyaluronic acid gel (the chemestry brand) with a ph of 7.5 - 8.0, is that a cause for concern? Would love to see a video about the effects of the products PH on the skin!
So, I was about to hand wash a few dishes, when I thought “what dish liquid would Dr Dray recommend”? Thoughts? I do not want to use something expensive that will just go down the sink :). Thanks
Dr. Dray, I love watching your videos. They are so informative and educational, in a simple way for us to understand and educate ourselves. I'd love to see a video with your take on chronic dry chapped lips (I saw the one on Cheilitis). Where nothing helps, it's a constant situation (I feel I have chapped lips since the day I can remember myself), and it seems like a sensitivity (maybe to alcohol in skincare?) more than anything else, or maybe even something deeper. Thanks!
Sarit Kaplan: Could be your toothpaste. Dr Dray published a video a month ago on toothpaste ingredients to avoid. To easily find it, type “dr dray toothpaste” in the TH-cam search bar.
I bought the Neutrogena blackhead eliminating toner that has BHA and denatured alcohol.i'm not irritated by it what so ever cause it has some moisturizing ingredients as well and is even a bit hydrating for me! I just avoid alcohol in my other skin care cause that one has a good amount in it already :D
The problem with denatured alcohol is the additives (such as methanol) that are purposefully added to make it not consumable or toxic. Though, we do not know exactly which type of denatured alcohol is being used in the skincare and cosmetic industry. Also, how is our skin going to react to the additives and will they get absorbed into our body?

You are so kind for sharing your knowledge on here. I just had a facial yesterday and was so lost while she was trying to sell me $70-$200 products. I saw ecytyl alcohol in the one exfoliator and it made me think is this bad? I didn't have the money anyway but still, they push these products on you and you don't know if it's any good or worth that price point

I have many skin care products from Lancome and Dior which contain denat alchohol, I'm so scared to use them after i wached a video from from DR. Vanita Rattan she said denat is really bad avoid it. What do you say about this? Please explain
Great vid Doc. This is why we have to take reviews on how products perform with a pinch of salt, we are all so different, what's great for someone will not work for someone else. Happy Friday 😀
One should also take claims about products with a grain of salt because manufacturers can make any claims they want to as the industry is unregulated, which means selling products is their prime objective. And many write their own reviews or pay people to do so for them. Buyer beware.
i just bought cetaphil foaming cleaser and i find that the ingridients from the packaging and the bottle is not the same. the bottle contains isopropyl alcohol and the packaging do not.😔
I'm so glad I found this video. I'm dealing with dry-red skin with maskne that looks like it could be Rosacea but I'm not sure (again, it just looks like it *could* be Rosacea). I definitely however, have a damaged skin barrier. Would I be correct to say I should steer away from low molecular alcohols in skincare, such as denatured alcohol?... I'm struggling to find the right moisturizer for me and I'm noticing that when I try oil free moisturizers, I'm maskne free. When I try moisturizers with oil in them, whiteheads appear within 12-24 hours anywhere the mask covers the face, and this weird texture that looks like they're bumps under the face waiting to come up become far more prominent to me in the mirror - and my redness become more defined throughout the course of the day, depending on what else is in the ingredients. But with oil free moisturizers, I've also had to deal with constant dry spots or my face feeling tight (especially my entire forehead), or I've had to lather it on my face in order for it to feel like it's doing anything. The moisturizer I'm using right now is oil free and actually has soothing ingredients like aloe vera near the top of the list, centella closer to the middle, and Sodium PCA in the lower half of the list (but also towards the middle). Near the top of the list though, there's one of the fatty alcohols (ceterayl). Combining this with the knowledge I'm getting from the video, I'm getting the impression that I should steer clear of only low molecular alcohols in skincare specifically because it would harm my sensitive skin?

as always, great to get a purely science-based, balanced view on another skin-care villain =) I've just spent almost an hour trying to explain to someone that a 'chemica'l insect repellent (she's going to the tropics) isn't necessarily worse than 'something natural'. While it actually works. Where does this strange notion that natural is always better and the pharmaceutical industry is trying to kill us even come from?
What about the Sana products - they have ethanol... what is your thought on those products (esp for those with sensitive, dryish, hyperpigmentation prone skin - if you use moisturizer?)
I’m using a prescribed topical for adult acne. I recently exfoliated with a facial scrub, put on a charcoal mask and then the next day put on a wedding dress mask. I woke up this morning with very burning irritation. I can’t put anything on my face because everything burns. I went to Ulta and started reading ingredients on moisturizers and they all contain alcohol. Finally, an aesthetician approached me (I found out she’s one when someone told me she was), and she recommended I get the Dermalogica kit for sensitive skin. The cleanser and misting spray were super soothing and calming, but that moisturizer stung like a 🤬!!! I think the alcohol in it is what’s causing the burning sensation. I’m peeling on my chin and close to my mouth. I don’t know what to put on to calm the burning and inflamed irritation. Please help me! Do I need to place an actual aloe on my face?! Thank you!

We all know that the alternative title of this video is "a certified dermatologist cancels Cancel Culture in less than 10 minutes"
What would be considered a "hydrator"
I have oily face and my face likes lighter moisturizers like cerave pm. Whenever I would try a thicker cream, an hour or less later, my face would look like I just washed my face with thick layer of cooking oil. So I think it depends on the person?
What’s the difference between hydrators and moisturizer?
Hydrator?
Thanks again!!
uz uzo thanks for watching
Happy Friday! Very happy to learn more about the kinds of alcohol in skin care! As I use Cerave moisturizer and I only have benefits, fatty alcohol is part of my daily routine. I believe that every product is truly personal and you have to "listen to your skin". I like to know the ingredients of the products I use and you are my resource person. Thank you for this video!

Thank you for keeping dissecting ingredients in skincare products. This education is so neccessary.
Which product is it?
I totally understand as I experience the same. So hard because most moisturizes contain fatty alcohols :(
I have the same problem. The hardest for me is to find nice and affordable moisturizers without fatty alcohols. I can only use Clinique moisture surge as it doesn't break me out. However it's not moisturizing enough for my dry skin plus it's expensive for me
This is such a timely video. Was just looking at trying the new urban decay foundation and was concerned about the alcohol denat in it. Thanks!
Thank you for giving us information Doc. ! It's comfortable to listen from a real dermatologist. 💕
Extremely informative! Thank you for adding some vocab on the screen as you went along as well!
Marleen G. CRPS is hard to cope with as it causes lots of discomfort. Hope things are going well
@@DrDrayzday thank you so much!
This is a very informative video again! Cerave works for me amazingly in my body but not for my face . For some reason breaks me out. I’ll keep trying to find the right moisturizer for me , it’s a long process and patience but it’s worth it. Thanks again for being such a savior with your scientific facts and stop us to waste our money and skin barrier lol ♥️🤗

Thank you Dr Dray for educating us all.. I have learned so much on skin care products from watching your videos.
This video is extremely helpful and informative. Thank you so much, Dr. Dray.
I try to avoid them in other skincare products but in sunscreens its impossible especially for oily skin because they are the only sunscreens that don't feel super heavy ..happily im not sensitive to it and it doesn't dry my skin 🌞
Just caught up on all my recent Dr. Dray videos & then this new video popped up! Nice!

There’s Japanese traditional skincare using natural fermented alcohol as essence. Could you talk about that?
This came right on time! I was contemplating buying a product a little heavy on alcohol so that helped!

Yes, it is confusing. Bisabolol also known as levomenol which is a monocyclic sesquiterpene alcohol is supposed to be good for sensitive skin. Go figure ???????
Another fantastic, educational video from our dear Dr. Dray!!! Thanks, Doc! Xo
I began using a product that a friend got for me and I noticed it contained denatured alcohol, but I still tried it out. My acne cleared up within 2 weeks of using it!!! I always heard denatured alcohol was bad for anybody, but that’s obviously not the case
La roche posay have alcohol denat in all their serums..retinol, vit C, B5..etc. I was contemplating them and this video has been helpful. Thanks.
i am in the same situation with another brand! smh.
Thank you so much for this info, I was hesitating about a Eucerin sunscreen because of the denat alcohol
I want to try a Lo Rache Posay sun screen but it has alcohol denat in it as the 3rd ingredient and I didn't know that could have an effect in the long run. Do you have any recommendations?

I will say as someone with extremely sensitive skin as well as eczema and rosacea. I have found avoiding fatty alcohols altogether for me personally has helped. My skin flares up a lot less and is less irritated. It makes it a lot harder for me to find products I can use as I also have normal - dry skin. This is a thread I’ve seen amongst other people who have eczema and rosacea as well.
Hopefully you see this but what products do you use now then? I’m still on the search after discovering the fatty alcohols make my eczema flair!
I love the Cerave cream. It is my holy grail.
Alcohol denat. always makes my skin feel dry so, I never use products with that in it.

@@DrDrayzday I will, thanks! :)
Good morning! You're so informative, Dr. Dray.

Hi Dr. D...hope you are doing well. Great Great Video...Great topic...great information...thank you dear for sharing your expertise with all of us!!!!! xo
Do you suggest apply skincare products to your whole face or just the effected areas?
Excuse me, sorry to bother, but do you know what’s the use of phenoxyethanol? , I’m about to buy an aftershave and I read that ingredient and wasn’t sure what kind of alcohol is that and its purpose? Again sorry to bother, hope you can answer, really like your videos!

You can. Its a faboulas moisturizer
I think if your just breaking out really bad u should stay away from alcohol then incorporate it later
Dr. Dray CeraVe has been a game changer for me! Thanks Jennifer 😊 👍

I have dry skin and I was wondering if a sunscreen contains Alcohol Denat, it is a good thing? Will it damage skin? Plmk!! ❤️
I actually get headaches with body moisturizers. I’m thinking it’s due to the alcohol content, what would you recommend? I think I’m allergic
My skin freaks out from fatty alcohols. I get emidiate burning, stinging and closed comedones within hours. If I push it I get a rash on my cheeks and hives all over my body. I have not been able to use any cream ever, including Cerave, La Roche Posay and Avene tolerance extreme emulsion. I don’t want to but I have to start DIYing since my skin i severely dehydrated. 😢

as always, great to get a purely science-based, balanced view on another skin-care villain =) I've just spent almost an hour trying to explain to someone that a 'chemica'l insect repellent (she's going to the tropics) isn't necessarily worse than 'something natural'. While it actually works. Where does this strange notion that natural is always better and the pharmaceutical industry is trying to kill us even come from?
Your skin glows like an Angel 👼 stunnning! Thx for advice always💕
What about the Sana products - they have ethanol... what is your thought on those products (esp for those with sensitive, dryish, hyperpigmentation prone skin - if you use moisturizer?)
Hi! Which is better, Niacinamide or Vit C? For dark spot reduction or overall safer active ingredient.
Thank you!
