As the use of electronics and synthesizers became more common place in large bands and also pay distribution ratio-to-actual performers, but also back stage production, touring, & promotion, these groups of just musicians alone were hard to keep together because the ability to make more money as an individual artist than belong to a large group. Parliament, Funkedelic, Bootsy's Rubber Band, The Commodores, the Bar-Kays, Mass Production, Brass Construction, Kool and The Gang, The Ohio Players, K.C. & The Sunshine Band, Heatwave,Tower Of Power, Earth, Wind & Fire; etc were very large productions that were like small symphony orchestras. Now-a-days, you just don't have that kind of effort into music production, thus, you have no new R & B or Rock & Roll large stage presence and if there is one, it's a studio band.
