Chic was a band led by bass player Bernard Edwards and guitarist Nile Rodgers. Both musicians were very successful songwriters and producers, combining to work on hits for Sister Sledge and Diana Ross. Edwards went on to produce for The Power Station, Joe Cocker and Robert Palmer, while Rodgers worked with the likes of Mick Jagger, David Bowie and Madonna❕ Rodgers and Edwards authored “Le Freak” after they were denied access to a trendy nightclub. It was New Year’s Eve, 1977, and they were invited to Studio 54, a very popular club in New York City where many celebrities and trendsetters hung out. Singer Grace Jones wanted them to do some production work for her, and asked them to come down to the club as her guests. When they got there, they were not on the list, and couldn’t persuade the doorman to let them in. All dressed up and nowhere to go, they left and started crafting “Le Freak” as a reply to the doorman. (Studio 54 is mentioned in the last verse❕) They first called it “F-k Off,” then “Freak Off.” That title sounded lame, but when they made the opening line “Aaaahh Freak Out!”, they came up with a better one : “Le Freak” (1978). This became the bestselling single of all time for Atlantic Records, with 13 million sales. Nile Rodgers knew “Le Freak” was going to be a monster winner even though the record company hated it. AND THE MAN WAS RIGHT‼️ 💚🎵💙
This song brings back so many memories. Back when this song came out,,,, disco dance clubs were just making the scene in Charlotte. Girls flocked to it. So I became that buff country boy who went to a disco on Friday or Saturday night and danced with the chics (see what I did there?) Went home with a different one every weekend. The weekend nights I didn't go I hung out with my buddies, drinking liquor and beer while standing around a bonfire..... which quite often ended in a brawl. ......had a reputation to keep up,...ya know.
Saw Chic at Essence Fest in 2014. Janelle Monae and Chic opened for Prince, who came out and played with each act before he took the stage. Doug E. Fresh kept the crowd going between sets. That was a concert to remember and sadly the last time I saw Prince in concert before he passed away.
Groovy. One of the best versions of this song that I've heard. I like how the beat is exciting but not overwhelming (not just a mess of drums like some other versions).

They playing with such a easy way like when someone taking breath without thinking.this is the result of countless outs of practicing where they achieved perfection. When I hear what today new generation listen I just don’t understand how they like the taste of false vocals and all voice corrected singers who sang soulless music. I also great full for the time when I growing up and anything played on radio was great. It's all about Joy and Music ...simple music, but great taste and excellent bass playing with Nile's rhythm guitar playing, Bravooo :-) Could never boring to listen this track.
He's a very good player, not doubt, but the question is taste. It isn't about notes per second. On the original, the bass wouldlead into the next part. This player is following the music all the time, and that takes away the sense of advanced swoop that was in the original as the next verse started for example. Rhythm on bass is a combination of beats and occasional sustain. That contrast makes the bass funky. 70% slap content is about making the bass a virtuoso instrument, while what is needed is the complement to what Nile is doing on electric guitar.
I taught Jazz ballet during the 70s and 80s. I had the best music to work with from this era . I’m now 70 and still move to the music

It takes top level musicians to pull off this funky tight dance groove. The bass is the drive.
