Just some info for viewers. I own a 2007 rx400h with 125,000. Only issues Ive had are seized footbrake cables £100 from Lexus and a broken rear driveshaft, where I got a 2nd hand off eBay for £60. Thanks for that info. A 2006-2009 RX 400h is my next vehicle. I just got spoiled by my 1998 Lexus ES300. Bought that car in 2005 used, and drove it until 2014, when I sold it for $1,200 to my mechanic so he could fix some rust starting in the rear wheel wells, and sell it again to a guy who, last I saw, was STILL driving it around.

Spot on review there! Many of the common problems are covered. Spoken from experience here. My dad’s RX300 closing in on 400,000km and still runs like a champ. Hardly anything ever goes wrong except for cracked dashboard which was replaced for free by the dealer and replaced the amplifier for free as well. Apart from that, it is your wear and tear parts.
I will definitely consider buying one, looks like all the possible issues are easy and realatively cheap to fix on the RX 300 model compared to other premium SUVs.
Good video, as an owner of RX400h I would add rear brake calipers getting jammed as hybrids often use the engine for braking and over time they rear brakes may get that problem. It then costs over 300 euros per caliper plus the new pads.
I was doing some research about getting one of these used, and was amazed at the detail as I watched your video. It became evident pretty quickly about your sense of humor. When John Travolta appeared I nearly lost my bear via my nose.
Just bought a 2007 with 186,000 miles in June. I insisted that a big oil leak would have to be fixed or I would pass on the vehicle. The leak turned out to be from behind the timing chain cover. The engine had to be dropped from the vehicle to do the repair. i had them replace the water pump and chain while they had the engine out. the oil cooler lines were leaking, too. Definitely take a close look at the passenger side of the engine for signs of oil leaking from that timing chain cover.
I just bought a 2006 and sadly I got it home and found oil leaks on the driveway. Turns out in needs 5000 for repairs. The dealer told me that I can trade it for another car on their lot after I stomped my feet. I'm already attached to this car. They have a 2013 crv available but the ride is so different. The car needs a high pressure power steering hose.. 930 dollars and rear struts and a driver's side wheel bearing and a few more things. Part of me just wants to pay for the repairs. It's such a nice drive.
I ride a Lexus RX 400 h Year 2007. Now 265.000 km and no special Problems. Battery is ok, 2 Years earlier tested by Toyota. Only the Brakes and disc are a little bit too small. I am very satisfied with the car. Would recommend it any time. Drove now 140.000 km myself since 2012.Thanks for your good rewiew. Just checked everything and its ok.
I had a 2004 RX330. Sadly I had to get rid of it due to that horrible, unresponsive (at times) transmission that would shudder and jolt. Really bummed me out because I loved the car tons, but that transmission was borderline a safety issue. I even took it to the dealership to have a TSB applied to the ECM in hopes it would relieve the issue... Nope, nothing. So yeah, had to part ways with it. I recently picked up a 2008 RX400h, the last year of the hybrid. I love it. It's much quicker, very responsive and smooth acceleration, and pretty damn good MPG. Some people hate CVTs... But I personally love them because they are so smooth. Definitely worth the upgrade.
Thanks man , I went to see one today and went straight to the areas you mentioned leak and there was water damage everywhere and I didnt buy it. Thank you.
Great and accurate review. Only wish I'd seen this before buying my 2004 RX330 some 7 years ago, because a lot of the issues mentioned in this video actually manifested themselves through the years. Would you please do a review on newer Lexus SUVs (from 2015 and up)?
it does not have water leak problems, you can just use it as a submarine and this system is designed to release the water if you wanna go back to surface.
I have an 06 rx 400 with 180k miles and it’s amazingggg! But I will say check for the water leakage. My driver side carpet gets SOAKED in heavy rain. Also had to do the rearward control Arms. Other than that the car purrs like new. Smooth as can be. No regrets!!
Great Review !! I own a 2008 RX 350 with 240,000kms , bought in 2016 with 150,000 kms . The oil lines had been fixed under warranty . The water pump started to fail at 160,000 kms , how do i know ? , because I checked the DAMM COOLANT LEVEL !! :) . The engine never ran hot ever and after changing to the upgraded water pump , it has run flawlessly . My wife mainly drives the car and we plan to give it to our 14 year old in 4 years time as a very nice, safe, reliable 1st car .Time will tell if it comes close to my 1999 GS 300 with 549,000 kms :)
Guys update last night i was drive the car and when i park the car and look around i see oil leak all over the rode. Take it to workshop. The two oil lines the guy talk about explode... when i was buy the car the was little oil drop noting big deal. But now it got real deal. Still the is on the garage cuz parts are missing on delarship. So take look very good when u buy this car if u see leak or little wet explore it. Becuse after u buy it.. it will cost alot.
I got the rx350 2nd gen same as this, the water pump went, dealership want £1,800 and private mechanics want £1,000. It’s a big job… I bought the car 6 months ago for £3,000 with 120,000 miles.
In the USA the Rx330 had drone noises at low rpm, it seems to have been too much clearance at the exhaust intake in one area. Also noises from under body panels at highway speeds.
Early 1mzfe engines had knock sensor issues. Only replace these with OEM and they should last another 200k. Many times have I seen folks use dorman only to last 3k miles and need the repair job done again which isn't easy at all. Also, the door actuators may fail. Not a hard repair though. Above all, watch for rusty frames.
Great review. Lots of usefull information. But I would rather point out that hybrid has different kind of "CVT" then many CVTs are there. It's much more reliable then conventional CVT with belt/chain.
I bought a 2005 RX330 from the original owner a year ago with about 88k miles. It's in almost perfect condition with the optional 18" wheels and towing package, which includes a heavy duty radiator and a transmission oil cooler. It does suffer the dashboard cracking which I hardly notice now but it does bother me when I do notice it. The other issue is that the power lift gate will not open reliably. It closes reliably though ; ) I can't tell if it has the under body panel rattling or if the suspension needs to be replaced. I wish it had AWD and bluetooth and I wish it got better gas mileage, but I love the luxury feel and comfort. It has most modern features except automatic cruise control or any intelligent safety features like lane assist. As far as maintenance costs, a Lexus dealer charged me abut $1000 for the 90k mile service which includes replacing the timing belt. They charged me an additional $600 to replace the water pump at the same time. They did not replace the idler pulleys, which they said looked fine and would have charged me an additional $600 at that time. I have driven about 12k miles since then and I think they need to be replaced now as I'm hearing some chirping occasionally on startup now. I very much regret paying them so much money when my local mechanic would have charged me less than a thousand dollars for all that including the pulleys! Other than that I have spent $75 every 5K miles for an oil and filter change plus tire rotation. I'm very happy to have seen this video today as tomorrow I'm getting a NY state inspection and I'm going to ask the mechanic to check for many of these issues so THANK YOU! Oh yeah, almost forgot, I am mostly used to the jerky transmission now, just have to go easy on the gas pedal... I don't think it's the transmission oil because that was changed at 60k or 90k miles.
These are fantastic used vehicles if they have been maintained decently- but you will get killed with dealer pricing on repairs. Find a good independent shop!
Yeah a Lexus video. Please do buying guide & common issues for Lexus GS (Model: GRL10) . I'm planning to purchase an used GS350 in the future. Thx much appreciated.
Had this car 4 years in the UK. Paid over the odds at a Lexus dealer because you get a 1 year warranty on the hybrid battery. After a few weeks driving it you will know if battery ok. I bought a car reg in 09, (although officially its 03-08). I always like to buy at the end of a model run, on the assumption they've ironed out the faults by then. Took mine to 110,000 miles before changing belt (money). In the UK they love stealing the CAT on the RX400H - you can buy Cat Guards, but why bother, just wait for the inevitable and then by an aftermarket cat. I know Toyota / Lexus have fixed a Cat price change (750 or 1000), but that will I think be (genuine CAT) again and that will just be stolen. They go for between 150-200, with this and the Avensis Mk1 Cat's being particularly valuable apparently. Now I know the car, I see bargains around @ 5/7k for 08's with all the upgrades (never seen the adaptive cruise control). The ML 11 speaker sound system is amazing. I have had not water ingress, no fogged front lights. Yeah suspension bushes are a consistent advisory on MOT's - but not replaced yet. Nice video OP. 4 things: a) On the 400h - the rear discs hardly doing any breaking so can corrode, also rear callipers can be a beach to get off b) Again on the 400h, under engine cover look at invertor. Look for any (pink I think it is), invertor fluid leaking or any evidence it has in the past - if so investigate or walk away c) The tiny (ordinary battery) under the bonnet (hood for our US brothers), will run down super quick if you leave electrical items on in the car and engine is not 'on'. Also when parked for prolonged periods - buy a $15 USD solar panel that plugs into the OBD port if your leaving the car for more than a week. d) The UK lexus owners club sell a redesigned (that doesn't snap) - £15. Find the guy selling them on ebay (Jim) is is name. Best car I have ever owned.
@@PrashLagisettiI did but the car and it is amazing, however be warned that my RX350 drinks petrol but it’s such a good drive. I prefer petrol engines over diesel. If you buy it you won’t regret it.
The water pump failed after 8 months of owning the car. Lexus want £1800 and private mechanics want £1000 to fix. It’s a 10 hour job and involves lifting the engine to get access.
The video you make about a vehicle that's essentially one of the most reliable ever made. You FIND stuff to complain about. Frankly, I'd like to see a 2003-2008 SUV made by ANYBODY that has as few potential issues as this Lexus. Basically, anybody else's vehicle is junkyard material by this age. The fact that you end up having to knit-pick, while admitting that the basic functions of the vehicle (ie. engine, transmission, electrical, body, brake system, etc.) are very high quality, and are generally still working great after all these years is proof enough that these were the best of the best, and are STILL great used vehicles. I've even seen a video of a guy that bought a new Porsche SUV in 2020, and he was IMPRESSED by the driving feel, quality materials, reliability, smoothness and features of a 2006 Lexus RX 350.
Hmmm I use my 2008 RX400h often. I have had it a year and half. It appears I've got a bad oil leak. I'm under the 200K at 181K. I always do regular oil change, filter as recommended 5K. Not sure, what caused it according to your research I shouldn't be having this issue.
Oil leaks are common in that mileage range. I have 2002 Honda CRV with 135,000 mi. And mechanics have told me it’s normal and ok. Won’t hurt anything as long as it’s not coming down to ground where visible oil stain is seen, thus using a lg amount of oil that needs the oil to be replaced. Just make absolutely sure to check your oil stick often!!!!
So, not at all )) Exactly, ABS hydraulic actuator do this shitty sounds when you shift gearbox from P to D, and the main reason why it happen - it's a very rare replacement of the hydraulic fluid, and finally it becomes in corrosion inside valves of this actuator. Exactly, OEM brand new actuator is very expensive, but you can buy an absolutely the same actuator (the difference between the blocks is only in their mount to the body, but the original RX mount can be rearranged to a new block and mount like genuine. In all other respects - they are 100% identical). Please check for the 44510-30250 OEM actuator. It's use on Hybrid toyota Crown and Estima (For JDM market), and you can buy used actuator from Japan. It will be help and fix any further problem with ABS Actuator and save your money.
Hi, I have the 2006 RX400h with 137K miles. Only recent (2003) major problem for me was the battery inverter water pump went out which might leave you stranded. Shortly before this, big system alarm came on the dashboard. Had to have car towed to shop. Cost was 700$US. At this point I'm letting the car tell me what I need to repair rather than throwing money on big preventive maintenance items, because I am thinking of replacing it, but it has been a very good car. I was quoted recently $2,000$US for timing belt, engine water pump, and spark plugs. If I do this work, car should be good to go. Thanks.
An independent mechanic should cost less than $1000USD. My local mechanic that I trust quoted me $850 USD two years ago for timing belt, water pump, and idler pulleys. I had already decided to take it to the dealer, which charged me $1600 USD and did not replace the idler pulleys! They wanted an additional $600 USD for that.
Thank you very much, have been looking forward to your review of this car. Are you aware of any problems with converting the RX300/330/350 to LPG? Thank you again.
Easy conversion. Plenty of these have been done in Lithuania. Have a friend that drives RX350 imported from USA with lpg done. Edit: RX330 is also an easy conversion. I don’t know about rx300
thanks for the video, i picked up an 04 rx330 with 136k miles for $5500 Candian in 2020, only issue is the fuel economy, i got 16-17 l /100km, its like 13mpg😢
I have a lexus rx330 thunderbolt edition 2005 has 185thousand miles had it since December 1 and already a problem check engine vsc traction off light came on two days ago unhooked battery cables and hooked them back up lights went off and was running rough looked and it was out of coolant put coolant in and ran normal next morning cranked it maintenance required light was on and running rough turned it off and barely cranked second time sat for one hour and tow truck guy cranked it drove it onto truck and said seems fine so I don't know what is wrong with the crazy thing I thought my car problems were over for a while my 97 Oldsmobile achieva died but I bought it used and lasted a long time I thought I had made the right choice buying it but now I'm wondering God I'm fed up with computerized cars nothing but problems and money pits I would be better off with a horse and buggy
I had a rx400h for a year with over 250,000kms and the only annoying thing I ever had was the driver door hinge sagging. I had to disable the automated trunk opening/closing Feature, it was painfully slow.
I bought a 2004 Lexus Rx330 with 132000 miles previously owned in Florida. I am replacing the dog bone torque engine mount as my mechanic noticed it was deteriorated when replacing the timing belt and water pump. Is it likely that the lower mounts will all need to be replaced as well well.
Thanks for the review, I was waiting for this one since long time. I didn't knew that is has so many small problems and defects, I was planing on buying one, buuuut...
You forgot to mention the expensive ABS brake actuator module that can fail with improper brakepads replacement on the #RX400h. I learnt the hard way 🇰🇪
I really like and support your helpful content about common issues with some cars and how reliable they are But i dont see any american cars on your list The cars that we want to see such as Jeep grand cherokee Ford expedition, explorer Toyotas And so Thanks👍
Hi DCF, another great review. I have a Rx400h, 262k km going ok. It a bit boring get goes. Average 9.2L /100. Have you got any feed back re the A/C?? Mine is playing up.
How would you compare the ride comfort if we have to choose air/normal suspension? Does it make a big differnce with holes and other bumps? What about body roll?
Planning to buy lexus rx400h 2006, 141000 miles .. but I has gearbox oil leak, is it easy to repair... lexus authorised garage says needs investigation and possibly change of gearbox... pls advice
How do i go even begin going about a burst gas line? It was leaking and then just burst completely. Don’t see much information about this anywhere on how to start the process. Please help. 2006 rx330

How much did all this cost if u dont mind sharing?
Cvt in Prius/ hybrid Toyota suv are way different from the garbage CVT used by Chrysler and Nissan. Far more reliable.
Always a fan of your channel. Please do Lexus RX350 2009-2015.
Well done mate! I can also see your editing skills improving nicely :))
Thanks man , I went to see one today and went straight to the areas you mentioned leak and there was water damage everywhere and I didnt buy it. Thank you.
Man, your website is awesome with maintenance videos!
Great and accurate review. Only wish I'd seen this before buying my 2004 RX330 some 7 years ago, because a lot of the issues mentioned in this video actually manifested themselves through the years. Would you please do a review on newer Lexus SUVs (from 2015 and up)?
it does not have water leak problems, you can just use it as a submarine and this system is designed to release the water if you wanna go back to surface.
lequel ???
Probably not after you give it to your kid...we were all one at one time.
We have a 2008 RX350 with 49,000 miles. Flawless (except the dashboard :( )
Are you selling it? :D
En tablero falla en los modelos 300, 330 y 350.
I have 2007 RX 350 just had water pump with belt and thermostat replaced $1059 3/12/2022. I also had clog with sun roof water on floor driver side.
Men u are the best...... i was buy this car before two weeks... watch this clip for 5 min.. how much info.. wow ...
WOW an excellent video do have a video on the RX 450h?
I got the rx350 2nd gen same as this, the water pump went, dealership want £1,800 and private mechanics want £1,000. It’s a big job… I bought the car 6 months ago for £3,000 with 120,000 miles.
Your videos are really well researched and very helpful. Thank you.
Great video.... awesome service for anyone looking to buy a used lexus!
This is one of the best reviews I’ve seen.
I had a bad leak in my 07. But it was the condensation hose that was clogged
Any chance you can do a review on the newer version of RX? Thank you
7:53 your graphics are hilarious
lol'd hard at that one :D
vivement la suite MERCI
Thank you for an awesome video and great website - much appreciated!
In the USA the Rx330 had drone noises at low rpm, it seems to have been too much clearance at the exhaust intake in one area. Also noises from under body panels at highway speeds.
Was there a fix on this ? I noticed the droning noise on my newly acquired rx330. The rx300 was smooth
One of the best car review video.
When changing the engine oil (5 litres) include a sump plug washer
Do a review for the RX450h 2009+ please ! I ust want to buy one of those . Great work by the way !
et du rx 400 de 2009 aussi bien plus fiable
Early 1mzfe engines had knock sensor issues. Only replace these with OEM and they should last another 200k. Many times have I seen folks use dorman only to last 3k miles and need the repair job done again which isn't easy at all. Also, the door actuators may fail. Not a hard repair though. Above all, watch for rusty frames.
Great review. Lots of usefull information. But I would rather point out that hybrid has different kind of "CVT" then many CVTs are there. It's much more reliable then conventional CVT with belt/chain.
Scotty: Why is everybody talk about me?
😂😂😂😂
I love my Lexus. They are great cars
I have the ‘04 so far so good. 30,900 miles
lift gate it’s your shocks on the gate change them they are putting to much stress that why gate struggles to open
@@godtheater I did replace them and it works now!
These are fantastic used vehicles if they have been maintained decently- but you will get killed with dealer pricing on repairs. Find a good independent shop!
Great video, super helpful as I'm shopping for a used rx. Thanks!!
Thanks for the review, looking forward to more!
Enjoyed the video as always! Thanks :D Hyped for more
Yeah a Lexus video.
4 things:
a) On the 400h - the rear discs hardly doing any breaking so can corrode, also rear callipers can be a beach to get off
b) Again on the 400h, under engine cover look at invertor. Look for any (pink I think it is), invertor fluid leaking or any evidence it has in the past - if so investigate or walk away
c) The tiny (ordinary battery) under the bonnet (hood for our US brothers), will run down super quick if you leave electrical items on in the car and engine is not 'on'.
Very informative thanks. Considering buying an RX350 on a 2006 reg with 120k for £3000. Is it worth it?
@@anonymous4201 I'm considering the same. Did you go for it? Worth it? Cheers
@@PrashLagisettiI did but the car and it is amazing, however be warned that my RX350 drinks petrol but it’s such a good drive. I prefer petrol engines over diesel. If you buy it you won’t regret it.
Thanks for the tips, you were right about the brake callipers being a mission to remove, I just snapped the bolts on both sides as they had seized up…
The water pump failed after 8 months of owning the car. Lexus want £1800 and private mechanics want £1000 to fix. It’s a 10 hour job and involves lifting the engine to get access.
Thank you! Very good information.
Dziękuję za bardzo obszerny i rzeczowy opis tego samochodu! 👍👌🤌
I bought a really nice key shell off yotamd and it's got a piece of metal through it so the key can't bust the shell
Can you make video about Lexus GX470 and Toyota Prado same generation with 4.0 V6 petrol? Thanks
Learned a lot about this chassis. Thanks!
Good informative video. Thanks! 🙌🏽
Very good sir thank your for your knowledge and the effort you put into this production. Respect.
Just make absolutely sure to check your oil stick often!!!!
on the hybrid models look for the ABS actuator, if its making noise constantly that means its on its last legs and expensive to fix,
So, not at all )) Exactly, ABS hydraulic actuator do this shitty sounds when you shift gearbox from P to D, and the main reason why it happen - it's a very rare replacement of the hydraulic fluid, and finally it becomes in corrosion inside valves of this actuator.
Love and support from Saudi Arabia. Love the cat animation
Thanks for the review. Maybe I will keep my Honda Civic a bit more...
@@kokipopi2985 Thank you :)
Thank You Cheif*
I am facing power steering leaks now with an RX330
But Engine works like Super Champ.
Have been facing same problems here
thanks for the video, i picked up an 04 rx330 with 136k miles for $5500 Candian in 2020, only issue is the fuel economy, i got 16-17 l /100km, its like 13mpg😢
I bet that would be o2 senser
Very thorough and concise thank you
Great video - wish we had it for all cars. Thanks for your work.
forgot about cracking cylinder head (back one) in 400H - it is common issue
Very good review!
Buy it
Other cars have more potential problems *cough*german cars*cough*. Hope you went for it.
very good video, following for sure
Great review! Thank you sir
This video is gold, thx!
great video as usual
You forgot to mention the expensive ABS brake actuator module that can fail with improper brakepads replacement on the #RX400h. I learnt the hard way

Can you do a 4th gen Lexus GS review? I own a 05 rx330 with 230km it’s very reliable only issue is a pinion rack leak
I wish it had push to start like the IS and GS of the same era
I really like and support your helpful content about common issues with some cars and how reliable they are
But i dont see any american cars on your list
