    terrible pitches and refs but tough lads out there in those days. No Billy Bremner, must have been suspended that day, don't think he was capable of being injured. How did these teams seem to field same teams week in week out? Think it was good diet of steak, fish n chips and fags and ale! Top blokes

      Billy Bremner had been injured since early November and wouldn't return until the Fairs Cup Semi Final 1st Leg against Liverpool in April 1971. The following game was the infamous Ray Tinkler/West Brom match and probably wouldn't be risked today. There had been heavy snow that winter so all pitches were pretty bad.

      @@winsfordtown I'm 99% sure Billy Bremner played in the West Brom game. I'm certain he was one of those bitterly complaining to Tinkler, and pointing to the 'flag up' linesman.

      @@SMSJSC He did play against West Brom but you wonder after such a long injury layoff that playing twice in a week would be a risk particularly on such a heavy pitch. Full back Nigel Davey was on the bench so quite a few top class players missing on that day.

    Those were the days my friends. George Heslop an unsung hero and Alan Oakes such a fantastic left half and never capped 'cause he was up against Bobby Moore. Great Leeds team too.

    By this stage, Leeds were 7 points clear at the top of the league (under the old points system). They really ought to have won it, but Arsenal sneaked it in their last game.

    Shows how good Leeds were-skill plus the hard men,Hunter,Giles,Reaney and Charlton....oh Bremner as well...that's nearly all of them. Still the best team of the 1968-1988 era.

    • @ossyable

      I think some of the Liverpool sides would have something to say about that and the Forest team of 1978-80 though not pretty was effective.

      Even the most ardent Leeds fans would have to disagree about the dates. 1968 to 1974 maybe, but Leeds were merely average in the late 1970s and generally awful in the 1980s, spending the years 1982 to 1990 in the second tier.

    I am a proud Welshman born and bred ( please excuse me! ) but may I ask if young Leeds United player Jack Clarke is any relation of the Great Allan Clarke? I was a child of around 6 or 7 about this time and Leeds were one half of my two favourite teams. The other half being ( don't laugh! ) Blackpool!

    You can take a quick free-kick but you have to ask the ref! They didn't. Doesn't even have to blow his whistle. Bad mistake from a pro. Mind you - nowadays a player would simply stand over the ball.

    • @SMSJSC
      @SMSJSC 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      They also didn't take the free kick in the right place. Ref was quite right, in my opinion, to disallow the goal.

    Can someone explain the reason for the small 3 wheel cars on the side of the pitch! I do allways see them on old footage of Stamford Bridge games aswell, Are they for the Elderly!

    • @winsfordtown
      @winsfordtown  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      They are old style 1970s disabled vehicles. Famously at The Dell they were behind the goal and certain players would on occasions take pot shots.

      @@winsfordtown Are you sure they were at The Dell?? the Dell was such a small ground, by that I mean there was hardly any separation between the terracing and the pitch. I always believed only the bigger grounds (Stamford Bridge, Ibrox, Hampden) with fairly wide running tracks, could accommodate them.

      They were three wheelers for the disabled (cruelly called "spacker chariots" in the day). Can't remember the last time I saw one of those.

    • @SMSJSC
      @SMSJSC 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It was normally at the bigger grounds - or at least those with a running track round the pitch, allowing a generous clearance between the goal line and the foot of the terraces. Very few grounds had this, but I can think of Stamford Bridge, Ibrox, Celtic Park and Hampden - all very large, bowl-shaped grounds where those little 3-wheelers were always seen (and were a safe distance from play).
