Phantoon has taken out many a runner. No shame in dying. Zoast played it the safer of the 3 but was still 1 shot away from dying himself. Great speed run with no real controversy from the room or couch. Zoast is a god at this game.
I was donation reader for the race, and I thought it was the best one too - turns out the guy who made the donation was one of the guys I was rooming with there, the guy who did the Zelda 2 run earlier in the morning.
Loves Pcull's commentary. His humor is very dry and dead pan and totally see how that's not everyone's cup of tea. After seeing so many Metroid races it was refreshing watching a race with levity and humor thrown in.
Hello fellow KDE-person :D I looked at the scedule and thought.... okay... last time only one runner survived. Now they do an even harder category.... sounds like an interesting idea.... :(
To be fair Oats is right up there with him too, it's just that Phantoon is so unforgiving esp. when you fight him so early in the game. One slip up and you're zoast. He's definitely the run-killer for this route.
It's safe to say no one will EVER race this category at GDQ again without making a few saves -- except maybe Zoast. I'm still reeling from his decision not to enter the ship pre-Tourian, even to refill!
I was shocked they let them run a low percent category after 3/4 runners died last time they did that (I think SGDQ 2016). I was convinced it would be 100% from there on out.
Problem being that this time they ran this on the second to last night (instead of as the almost-last-game), so they couldn't really afford to just have a total reset if Zoast had died any significant amount of time after the other two (I believe they should have both just started replaying as soon as they died in case Zoast had later as well, since it WAS only 12 minutes or so into it). If it was the second to last game like it usually is, I'm sure the "let's just re-run it" idea would fly, but not in this scenario, schedule was already too tight as it was.
As always, it was fun to watch Zoast run this game. In retrospect, the race would have been better if his opponents had not been Keanu Reeves and Jay from "Jay and Silent Bob."
I love the reactions by the runners and the couch during the intense mother brain fight at 1:01:37. Those onion rings sure were terrifying but zoasty saved the day once again...
almost, although no z.it's a disorder where sensory information crosses over, with several diffrent combinations. common ones include seeing sounds as color, or seeing colors words. I once read a story of a guy who saw numbers as little colored blobs.
I noticed no problem with the couch commentary. I did notice a problem where way too many donations seemed to end with "save the animals." And they read mine! So happy.
As the donation reader, most of the donation comments that got to my screen were for "save" - and I did notice this during the run that it was disproportionally that way - but in the end, "kill" still won, which surprised me given the number of "save" comments that came my way.
This was an amazing run! All the runners are extremely skilled and did a great job, even thought a few of them got bad luck on Phantoon! Zoast's run was awesone! And the bossfights were really intense! Ridley and Mother Brain got me so nervous it felt like i was playing it! xD Also, that was some of the best commentary i've seen in a run!! Really fun to watch! xD
They should have restarted, they were only 10 minutes in so they could at least battle it out for the second place. If Zoast died too would they just quit the whole run?
I always felt that these speed run competitions would benefit best from a system of mandated save points before the major killers on these speedruns, so that Speedrunners would not so easily forfeit the run if they died once... but at the same time, doing so would rob the event of a sense of tension that makes the Super Metroid races such a major draw for AGDQ. Maybe experiment with it on a Low% race?
Maybe would have liked to see Oats and Overfiend go one on one from a backup safety save to make it a bit more competitive. But still much better than last year
I always make a point to check out when Zoast is running. He ran the first gdq speedrun I ever watched, which really got me into gdqs in general. I think it was Super Metroid back at SGDQ 2013. If you're out there Zoast, I love ya! (Beard looks nice btw)
Boring people: "The old GDQs were better! They were more laid back and everyone had fun!" Also boring people: "I don't like this run because they were having too much fun instead of giving straight-laced serious commentary for this, the twelfth time we're seeing Super Metroid at a GDQ."
Just my two cents, I really wish oatngoats and Overfiendvip started again after they died since it was at the same time, to see a race for 2nd. In regards to the commentary, I don't have a problem with making it more light-hearted and funny, it doesn't have to be super serious all the time. The idea was fine, the execution was not great though. It kind of felt like everyone in the room was laughing at a joke that you aren't privy to for an hour straight (it's bad enough when it lasts for five seconds). In fact, that's one thing I've been kind of weary of with GDQ as of late. They seemed to be a much more open community, but it seems to be more exclusionary now. It's like, if you aren't a hardcore gamer with $1,000 to donate, you aren't worthy of being a part of the event. I know Super Metroid inside and out and don't mind a change in the flavor since I've seen plenty of speedruns of it, I just felt like I was an outsider for most of the run. I'll still watch the GDQ events and make my donations as usual, though.
As a heads up, while I know the commentary wasn't in the style that some of you would have liked, this is how the runners and the SM community members at the event wanted it this time. The game has been showcased so many times, and almost always in a super serious style. If it's not for you, that's cool, just know it's what was desired and a lot of other people seemed to enjoy it :) Also I "tried" to hit up on as much of the relevant information of low% ice as possible, going over a bunch of singular room strategies is boring (at least that was the general consensus). Oh yeah, and #TasteTheRainbow.
Some jokes are fine, and we don't need to be told about arm-pumping or mock ball every time, but they were ALL jokes. All jokes, all the time, almost no meaningful commentary. And it never stopped; they just would not shut up and let the run breathe. And this wasn't the usual category so they were doing different things I really would've liked explained but we had Tweedledum and Tweedledumber on the couch. Since some folks around here are not aware of the vast middle ground between the two extremes of "jump in front of a bus" serious and non-stop frat humor, I recommend supergreatfriend's Let's Plays as examples of mixing information, humor, and some occasional STFU to give the ears a damn break.
You know what though? I would take a run like this *ANY* day of the year over the previous, "Hold your applause and be quiet for a baby Metroid skip because serious-time." happening in other years. Fuck that shit - that's suffocating as hell. This should be fun and this was my favorite SM race yet, simply BECAUSE of the couch slinging jokes all the time, which got the crowd and donaters involved too, which is good for everyone. And in any comment about how it interrupts the runners, they have those huge sound-canceling headphones on for a reason.
Although I love this category, there should be a 100% race of Super Metroid in the marathon just so we have a real race where the runners would all stay alive but great show anyway. This category requires awesome skills.
I am surprised Zoast finished. Phanny first then for Zoast just about every boss after he just got straight up screwed. The MB fight alone was complete bullshit. It says a lot for his skill.
Mind going over what screwed him on the bosses? On MB do you die if you get hit by the red beams? To me (being ignorant) MB just looks like shoot and dodge from the corner. Would have been nice if he commentary had gone over some of the bosses. I don't know much of low% boss fights
Chris: It probably looked like Zoast had lots of leeway on the MB fight, but it was actually razor-thin. MB's brain beam does 300 damage, and it's not some RPG attack that leaves you with 1 no matter what -- it just kills you. This is why low% still picks up three E-tanks. With 98 HP to work with, you can only take a couple of the weaker attacks (and above all, NONE from the hand beam). One more hit from anything would have ended Zoast's attempt. And with only charged ice, he had to shoot her a total of 200 times!
It's an old comment, but to add a bit more information. To Gravity suit, the rings deal 20 damage (he ate 3 of them at once which caused 60 damage in the beginning), the bombs deal 20 damage (multiple damage possible), eye laser deals 30 damage, ketchup beam deals 100 damage (multiple damage possible, but even one hit will deal too much damage and end the run)
dayum ive got to say that was a fcking intense motherbrain fight just look at everybody all of them were like :O omggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggg
It's a really hard game to speedrun, specially at low percentages. I'm not shocked this happened, but it is disappointing. Far less thrilling this way. Always next time around, at least!
Can we please bring back informed commentary in future GDQs? I don't mind in principle having someone like Patty to add some levity, but we need to counterbalance that with someone who will explain what's going on.
I disagree. For just one example, there was no discussion of the route choice. A commentator should have noted that Zoast runs PRKD as opposed to PKRD mainly because mini-Kraid is a good source of super missiles, and there are no good places to farm before Botwoon in the other route (the escape from lower Norfair doesn't bring one by the same farming room that was passed on the way in). However, Zoast decided to make a safety detour to get the High Jump etank instead of waiting to get the Ridley etank. The commentators really should have mentioned that he was not quite doing the hardcore route he does when he's going for WR.
That´s what I think too. I watched the run but I felt by the comentaries that they just didn´t care about the run or the event. I know that it must be difficult to coment about many trick every gdq and it may feel very repetitive but for the sake of the event and the importance of that charity, I feel that they must give a good show. The jokes are fine and can be a very good complement, but it just felt incomplete without informative coments.
I'll be honest, I'm super glad they had fun commentors during this run. We've all watched different runs and races of this every 6 months, and it's nice to just hear something different from the usual. While I'm sure there's parts and strategies they missed, it was still a nice change of pace to me.
The low % means they use the lowest amount of power-ups needed to beat the game; so low life and low ammunition. The ice part means they use the Ice Beam; which is a weapon needed to beat the game.
Was sincerely disappointed (not in the runners, but because I love races) when this happened, but Zoast turned around and put on an incredible performance.
I feel like Phantoon in low percent should qualify as "serious time" and not a time for making distracting comments and/or trying to get the audience to laugh.
21:32 "Bomb Chorizo"
Ah yes, the ancient Chorizo race. We have a type of sausage named after them.
Sounds like its going to reek havoc among my digestive systems :S
This comment deserves way more likes
Its actually Torizo
@@tiirmason8994 nuh uh it's chorizo the guy even said it
oats and overfiend both got an amazing time on this one! only 12:04
Phantoon has taken out many a runner. No shame in dying. Zoast played it the safer of the 3 but was still 1 shot away from dying himself. Great speed run with no real controversy from the room or couch. Zoast is a god at this game.
Zoast's face at 28:41. "oh god he died, OH GOD THEY BOTH DIED"
29:03 you can hear him go "Wow". XD
vZakat haha oh yes,wonderful
That double take he does.
45:52 - Best donation ever.
I was looking for that to show my friend! Thank you!
Bad for me when i missing
Can we give that person an oscar for the most amazing donation ever made?
I was donation reader for the race, and I thought it was the best one too - turns out the guy who made the donation was one of the guys I was rooming with there, the guy who did the Zelda 2 run earlier in the morning.
best avatar ever
28:44 The exact moment Zoast realized that the entire run was on his back. Beautiful
Loves Pcull's commentary. His humor is very dry and dead pan and totally see how that's not everyone's cup of tea. After seeing so many Metroid races it was refreshing watching a race with levity and humor thrown in.
AGDQ 2018: Super Metroid Phantoon% :)
Everybody lose? :D
Hello fellow KDE-person :D
I looked at the scedule and thought.... okay... last time only one runner survived. Now they do an even harder category.... sounds like an interesting idea.... :(
RBO is the worst that I know of. It is pure suffering.
With or Without Super Missiles?
AGDQ 2018: They killed the run completely instead by not including it...
Didn't mind the commentary, I actually loved it and had a good time!
zoast the most experienced runner shows why he is so good.
To be fair Oats is right up there with him too, it's just that Phantoon is so unforgiving esp. when you fight him so early in the game. One slip up and you're zoast. He's definitely the run-killer for this route.
I see what you did there..
I love how I forget about channels like these and rediscover them after a bunch of fresh videos are uploaded.
GDQ staff were probably so happy when Zoast made the game save before MB. Heads up by him knowing how massive that K/S donation incentive is.
It's safe to say no one will EVER race this category at GDQ again without making a few saves -- except maybe Zoast. I'm still reeling from his decision not to enter the ship pre-Tourian, even to refill!

This commentary crew was epic! Made me laugh no matter how hard I tried to cry for the sake of the two dead runs! Great work!
The donation from Phantoon was amazing.
Always love to watch Zoast run Super Metroid. An absolute master
Oats is hilarious, got to watch his channel and stream.
As always, it was fun to watch Zoast run this game. In retrospect, the race would have been better if his opponents had not been Keanu Reeves and Jay from "Jay and Silent Bob."
Lol! Keanu Reeves would not have died. Because he would have dodged. :P
theyre good runners, phantoon is just hard, especially in a low% run
45:50 best part, especially the elephant ghosts part
That Phantoon donation was funny , but losing two runners is just brutal.
45:52 dis guy, i like dis guy
Really a shame how this one unfolded considering how talented the runners are. Still the best marathon race game ever, though!
The reactions at 1:01:36 to that hit still get me
I love the reactions by the runners and the couch during the intense mother brain fight at 1:01:37. Those onion rings sure were terrifying but zoasty saved the day once again...
"I like the music 'cause it's red." This has been some of the best commentary I've ever seen on a run.

_Red_ by King Crimson is f@cking awesome!
I personally like red music myself, especially on a Phantoon% run.
I waited all year for this run and I was so upset when they died to Phantoon, thank god for the great SM runner of all time
I noticed no problem with the couch commentary. I did notice a problem where way too many donations seemed to end with "save the animals." And they read mine! So happy.

Still such a crazy suspenseful and skillful run, even if it isn't a race anymore
Im so glad this run was funny and full of heart compared to the last time,
This is why Zoast is the king of super metroid. The mad lad has been running it for like 15 years.
I always struggle with deciding which screen to watch in races. But this time it was easy.
If there wasn't enough of a reason to like Zoast, watch this run.
So much super metroid talent in one place
Boring people: "The old GDQs were better! They were more laid back and everyone had fun!"
Also boring people: "I don't like this run because they were having too much fun instead of giving straight-laced serious commentary for this, the twelfth time we're seeing Super Metroid at a GDQ."

*I HAVE SEVERAL QUESTIONS*
The commentary is what made this perfect. Thanks Patty, you've got a new fan.
So many laughs and a new record!
Samus just stares at the door leading to the animals "I'm not going to kill you, but I don't have to save you!"
It's just godlike commentary xD
I just finished the game a week ago and i amazed with this speedrun and i never knew
24:16 theres a button to run WHAT!!!??
These guys got farther in this game in 10 minutes than I did in 4 hours
Yo, that run button changed my life.
The introduction of Zoast was a bit delicious considering what happened soon afterward.
Is nobody gonna talk about how amazing this commentary is?
I hope to see more 100% runs of Super Metroid in future GDQ's, I believe them to be far more entertaining.
When Zoast gets hit like right off the bat in the Mother Brain fight, he has a smile like, "I bet everyone's butthole just puckered".
Very nice to watch and listen.
Just my two cents, I really wish oatngoats and Overfiendvip started again after they died since it was at the same time, to see a race for 2nd. The commentary about bowling cracked me up so bad...
As a heads up, while I know the commentary wasn't in the style that some of you would have liked, this is how the runners and the SM community members at the event wanted it this time. The game has been showcased so many times, and almost always in a super serious style. what is low % ice race, can someone explain pls? D;
