- Huge PB that I'm incredibly happy about. I've been trying to beat Druid's 1:06:53 IGT for months now, so finally getting it was huge. Lot of errors still, but phenomenal ball RNG and a strong lategame made this a really good run. There are several small timesaves that have been found, but I haven't learned them yet, so they are not in this run. 1:15 is definitely within reach, but 1:14 still seems very far off barring a ton of new strats.

Golden Temple was generally bad

Missed a super on the first Gamma of BG3
Missed speedball towards BG3
Missed speedball on the way to research team area
Missed speedkeep on the Mining Area gamma
Missed a super on the first Zeta
Missed 2 supers on the dark Zeta
Missed ballspark towards power bombs
Missed speedball on the ruins E-tank statue
Less than ideal tester pattern slowed the kill down a bit
Not optimal ball placement before Screw Attack
Missed DCR strat
Alpha squad was slow
Missed a couple supers on the dual gammas
Omega nest was slow. Bad execution and some bad patterns
Accidental shinespark across waterfalls room 2
Plenty of time to save still, but the RNG will make this kind of an annoying run to beat - เกม

This fucking game man... it's just insane how a fan made game is this good. If only Nintendo did what SEGA did with Sonic Mania... one could only imagine.
@pharmabr but am2r was developed in years, i think it was Nintendo that copied the idea of a remake of metroid 2
@@Stefanoabed05 mercury studios the people who made the remake actually went up to nintendo with the pitch of remaking fusion, idk where it was decided to remake 2 instead. But im glad things did play out the way they did. Not only do we have dread just around the corner, but we have 2 remakes of metroid 2 each with certain things I like more than the other versions, but also the dude who did work on am2r now works with the dev team who made ori and the blind forest. So he is still doing great things in gaming and metroid atleast for now, is more alive than ever.
Mercury is also pretty interesting in that they are the only devs that can say they worked on games on both halves of the genre's name sake, metroid and castlevania.

I never knew that the metroid counter stayed at 1 at the end. I'm not sure if that is unique to AM2R, but it's a nice touch.
As far as I'm aware, it is unique to AM2R; the 1991 original does not seem to count the hatchling as a metroid, and the counter falls to 0 upon defeating the metroid queen. I haven't played Samus Returns yet, so I can't say for certain.

One thing that I find amazing about the 2D Metroid games is the level design for speedrunning. Seriously, has anyone analyzed that part of these games? Like... how do sections connect with each other by using and reusing the Speed Booster, how differences in height of the terrain help to achieve this the reuse of the movement, where to use energy bombs so they destroy sections of Morphball Bomb to pass through with the Speed Booster... Man, when I think of it, when you look closely at it and achieve speedruns like this... I find it a relevant topic to point at and discuss, even useful to teach others about how to make a game.
you know am2r is a remake done by people, the community, this shows how much care went into in and i find that amazing
@@boogieboi7473 The real amazing part is that AM2R was all done by one guy. Even when he was tied down with work and life, he still took his time to finish it, but with delays that spanned years.
@@SoldierOfFate I almost wish he would have made a original game in that style instead. That way he could have made money from it, release it on most platforms and maybe even make more stuff afterwards. The dude clearly has talent.

That speed booster/morph ball segment around the 30 min mark was pretty good.
Level design is obviously close to the original in spirit but with many interesting twists. Amazing. The precision and memory required for this run - also amazing.
The shinespark preservation stuff done in this run is insane.

Seriously though, one hell of a run man. I can't wait to see AM2R make a debue on the GDQ stage. it looks like such a technical speedrun that I bet a race would be almost as epic as Super Metroid.

Not going to happen unfortunately. I actually ran Zero Mission at SGDQ 2018, we asked staff beforehand if we could even mention AM2R as part of a story, and got shut down even for that. It's been in a few smaller marathons though, usually gets received pretty well.

Love it! My only complaint is that goddamn spinning robot noise. How you were able to complete the run with such an amazing time with that noise happening for a chunk of it is the real miracle.

Thanks! Always nice to see more people interested in running this game. This is the undisputed WR right now, since it beats both Druids real time and his game time. His real time was pretty easy to beat since lag adds about 2 minutes to his run time, but his game time was a pretty formidable mark.

A much better game than Samus Returns.
Jeromy Perez they’re both great for different reasons. AM2R definitely is the faster game. But Samus returns requires a lot more resource management and getting the most out of all of your skills. And it’s certainly the harder of the two games. I’d say AM2R is more like Zero Mission and Returns is more like Fusion, fusion doesn’t have major sequence breaking and stuff of that like, but it does require really consistent good execution throughout
Lefty-flip-drawings fusion is somewhat easier than zero mission imo.
...so...why'd ya not get the Varia Suit beforehand? And what's with that swishing noise that kept following you throughout most of the end of the run?

Getting the Varia Suit is a waste of time, so is quicker to get it after the Gravity Suit
Area 2 as a whole is really weird to get to for cleanup. Getting Varia late speeds it up a little bit, since you have the power bomb and gravity suit.

Amazing run! I love AM2R and i might look into speedrunning it too. Is it similair to Metroid: Zero Mission? (Control and difficulty wise) Because that's the game i currently run the most.
The controls are customizable, so you can have it control exactly like Zero Mission. As a speedgame I find this to be much harder than ZM, but they play very similarly for the most part.

AM2R doesn´t let me bind samus movement' controllers to the cross next to select button. Anyone knows how can i bind them as him in the speedrun?
I'm not 100% sure that I know what you mean, but I am not sure that you can bind movement keys to anything other than a dpad or analog stick. It might also depend on what controller you're using.

It's still there at 1:09:04 when they go back for the Varia suit, though they do finally get it at 1:10:07.
But speaking of the Varia suit.. despite not having it at 1:04:39 they took no heat damage?
@@Golddess the gravity suit prevents you from taking lava damage. Varia only gives you a 50% enemy damage reduction.
He goes back to get the missile because it's faster.

The entire escape sequence is scripted. It only explodes when you reach the end of it, so you have to get there before going back down and collecting the items.

The only difference between this remake and Nintendo's is that Nintendo was a vapid flashy cash grab, and AM2R is a beautiful labor of love.
Samus Returns was just so happened to be released almost immediately after this game. I'm dead certain if it wasn't for AM2R that one wouldn't see the day of light.
I like both. I don't see how the official one is a "cash grab" at all, it brought new mechanics to the table, looked very good for a 3DS game and most importantly it was fun as hell. I wonder how many people have a twisted view about the game just because of the whole Am2r situation.

NeutralDisco Yes, the official version of the game has this glitch. Somebody made a patch that fixes that glitch though, so I've started doing runs on that version.
I played this game and this bug did not happen. Thankfully you soon picked up the gravity suit as this sound was bothering haha
NeutralDisco Yeah, that bug is not something you would find in a casual playthrough. You need to kill the tester while he is still doing his initial spinning attack.

not even that much of a metroid guy but i tried this out after loving the Prime games and damn, its hard to now play the Super Metroid or GBA titles after playing this fan game, its insanely good, easily on par with other S tier fan games like SRB2
This game is much MUCH better than the crap nintendo released. Not to mention, it has ALL the weapons and ALL the abilities AND many more levels and bosses.
The areas are way more interesting than SR too. Each one of them also has a distinct theme.

Eh, you get used to it after doing runs. Fortunately there is a patch for that, so in the event I ever improve this time, that noise will not make an appearance.

@@DarkEspeon40K there is a very dedicated group of people that have been making patches for the game since the DMCA. Doc has not had anything to do with it though. The patch that I use is not one of the massive ones, it just fixes 2 bugs, one of which is that tester noise.

@@DarkEspeon40K There's a lot that has been implemented. I don't know off the top of my head everything that has been done, the major features that I know of are the randomizer and Fusion mode, which makes the game a lot like Fusion. The updates are all posted on the AM2R subreddit.

This is a great speed run. Very tight and polished.
I have never bothered to look into this game until today. I have been on a Metroid II kick lately and I wanted to see what AM2R decided to do with it. Judging by the content of this video, I would say that the author of this remake didn't understand the atmosphere of the original game at all when they set out in developing this. The visuals are bright and colorful, the presentation is more cinematic, and the music is upbeat and groovy. These design elements clash harshly with the source game. I think that the author's time would have been better served if they made an original Metroid game rather than use Metroid II as the base.
I think it's more of like a reimagining. I don't mind the upbeat groovy music and the bright and colourful bg.
I think no matter what, it's still is an amazing game. This game also land the dev (DrM64) a job! Working with the devs who made Ori and the Blind Forest.

Keep in mind, aside from it being surreal having a Nintendo game on a non Nintendo console, the game barely is like the actual remake later that year, on the 3Ds, the game was taken down due to copyright.
Also, for example, at some point at the 8 range, of a boss that is reminiscent to a Indiana Jones trap, never happened in the real remake.
My AM2R doesn't have that speed. How could I get it?

I'm technologically illiterate and don't know how to play games like this. What is the easiest way I can play this game? Looking at this game it just appears to capture the essence of Metroid 2 more than Samus Returns. The artwork, music, feelings of isolation, etc. just capture the aesthetic better.

Since i know this is probably gonna get hate, let me explain. Since though it's a good game, i have some problems with it
In all honesty, i don't hate the game, i got 100% on all files, it's just not nearly as good as it could've or should've been.
The combat is the same for all enemies (wait for them to flash, counter and shoot once) other than a few exceptions that are just gimmicky (use whatever aeion ability to kill and stuff like that) and just feel like an excuse to give certain things purpose
The wall jumping and speedrunning aspects to the game seem dead because they took out everything fast and made it slow (speed booster being replaced with the time slow aeion ability)
The only positive thing i have to say about it is that the bosses felt great to fight and were far better than the bosses in previous metroid games
Samus Returns was great in providing the Metroid atmosphere, but it didn't provide the sequence-breaking opportunities that made games like Super and Zero Mission great. The Prime influence was strong, for better and for worse.

I just care that they
1. Fucked up the fun wall jump by both destroying your control in the air after the wall jump and by changing the controls for no reason
2. They took everything fast and made it slow (taking speed booster and making it into the gimmicky aeion slow shit, they serve roughly the same purpose, but one is slow and boring)
3. There are very few decent puzzles, i swear atleast half the time i spent "solving puzzles" was doing the same thing over and over (powerbomb shinespark is used as a solution to a puzzle like.. more than a dozen times, it's not hard, you just find the spot to stick to, plant a power bomb, and collect your reward)
They trashed the essence of metroid like fusion but they didn't even do it right, i actually like fusion, it's my second favorite metroid game
The difference is that even when shitting on the metroid formula, fusion had the decency to do it in a careful, calculated and fun way
@@VideoMask93 It's ambience was one of it's biggest flaws, in my opinion. Unememorable environnement, boring soundtrack, barely any lore, Samus Returns is the exact opposite of the Prime trilogy in that sense.

Missing jumps, getting hit, wasting shots etc
It's performed quite sloppily, not that i could do better, it's still impressive, but definitely not tool assisted

If this was tool assisted all the ballspark cancel trick would be frame perfect. Which in this case it is not.

I do not like this remake, it has many changes from the original, there are also dark parts, it is disgusting to play like that, not even on the Game boy console it looks like that, more than just a secret where you get a tank of energy, but the whole game is visible, but here there are many dark areas it takes points away from the game, they wanted to get with that, bad design of areas, nintendo does not have to be afraid of this I play so badly structured I played the original Game boy and the 3ds one is a thousand times better than this crap I'm seeing now.
