The whole sequence earlier in the film where Ethan is imagining the possible future of him having to kill all the cops just to capture Lane, one of his most hated enemies. And then this scene exemplifying his compassion to save this woman while also trying to maintain his cover.
This scene pretty much sums up Ethan Hunt; as Hunley says - he can not distinguish between the lives of one or a million. This definitely extends from his PTSD from the first film - watching all his friends murdered with no ability to save them. He’s been saving them ever since, even a nameless cop he meets in the street.

Some scenes are just there to humanize the characters so that you feel connected to them. Even someone who never saw any mission impossible will instantly tell what kind of man ethan is by this scene.
Actually it has. Ethan lost plutonium in the starting of the movie is to save one innocent life(Luther's). He improvised the plan of abducting of lane to save the lives of police. And in this scene too, he doesn't want yo harm an innocent police who is doing her duty. To sum it up at the end the CIA director says "we requires agents who knows the value of one life".

Oh my god yes - things like that are the "jewels" hiding inside otherwise "mechanical" stories. She did a great job acting the scene, too. Not just after she was shot (and she was fantastic in that part), but also immediately before she was shot. You could see the wheels spinning in her head, and the result popping out was "this is not a bad man." She was struggling to make the whole situation "compute." I think he was convincing her - I think she would have walked. Her instincts were clearly telling her to.

In discovery's wings over afghanistan documentary their is a short training part of how green berets were taught to support local insurgency and take the fight to enemy. In that their was a scenario where an alleged female spy was captured and the recruit have to decide whether to kil her or report the crime to its superiors. Well what you would have done and what did the recruit do???
Awwww they did such a good job when casting for her. Her eyes make you instantly feel for her, i wanted Tom to find her after this mission was over ^.^
Can we just say that one of the reasons that this movie is so good is that it dodges so many cliches that you'd normally see in a typical action movie? In this scene, the cliche is that the team wouldn't run into another problem (apart from Ilsa showing up in a bike) and just start driving to the safe house. NO ONE EXPECTED A DAMN COP TO BE AT THE WRONG PLACE AT THE WRONG TIME!!!
If one would look at it in a narrative standpoint, the only reason that the copgirl was there is because it aligns perfectly to the movie's theme: which is the importance of one life relative the life of millions. We see this in Lark and Lane's ideology of nuclear apocalypse as a means to create a better world, while Ethan, the polar opposite of the villains, sees every single innocent life as important. Really, it doesn't matter if the cop was a man or woman, because Ethan will choose to save him/her because that's who Ethan is, as shown multiple times in the movie. Ethan is even disturbed at killing a male police officer in his hypothetical outcome of Lane's extraction. Of course, the explanation above wouldn't really apply to thick-skulled brainless idiots who are the first to call out SEXISM when in reality, it isn't sexism, because the writers of the film decide to cast a fairly-popular FRENCH actress as a person Ethan saves in FRANCE.
He saved her by making it look like she was in a shootout with a bunch of criminals, got shot, but still managed to kill them all. Damn, Ethan got brain.
Excellent scene. Great work by everyone involved; good direction, excellent camera angles, and great acting for all the actors. The expressions and body language of all the actors during the scene really sell their individual character's thought processes and assessments during the incident. Bravo.

As a french I have to say to you how powerful this scene (and the one of "false" liberation where Ethan's killing many french policemen) is for us.. During the last years many police and military men were killed in numerous terrorist attacks (the last was a policewoman just one week ago..) and it traumatized us considerably.. When I saw this scene in movie theater I was personally happily reassured given the relative good end of this policewoman character. I am almost convinced that Tom Cruise did these about this point and for that I thank him 1000 times (anyway even if we don't focus about these scene the movie is awesome in itself). this is a very intense scene. the acting by that nameless female French Policewoman is great as well as she is shot and resigns herself to the inevitable but is miraculously saved. her expressions are only second to Tom Cruise performance.
Except the ballistics won't match up, her gun wasn't the one that shot those guys, they'll have some questions for her and she'll either have to tell the truth, which isn't that big of a deal as she doesn't know anything, or she'll lie and maybe get in trouble.
I think she would tell the truth dutifully, that these guys where up to some nefarious stuff, but went out of their way to save her life at their own risk. If they were caught, she could vouch for that moral integrity they had as a witness. Of course that didn't happen, but it is fun to speculate the consequences of Ethan's choices.
I've been searching in this comment section see if anyone gets that they way Ethan shoots those guys was a reference to Vincent shooting the two thugs in Collateral. Even the gunshots sounded in both movies were sounded similar. I was so sad that I couldn't found one until I saw your comment.
