This man didn’t shoot threes in college and now he lets go without hesitation. I’m a big edey and grizzlies fan. The people who was doubting edey are looking ridiculous so far.
I always thought of Zach Edey as being at minimum a high end backup, possibly a 6th Man candidate every year but his ceiling as being the next Yao Ming. There’s just something about Edey that reminds me of him and the potential for that level of dominance. Now if he stays even just a decent 3-point shooter, then he could be Yao Ming with a 3 point shot.
@@A350Airways no not really. the Hawks front office is stupid for not trading Capela like 3 seasons ago, so they wouldn't have taken Edey no matter what. But over his last 7 games, Risachier is shooting 47% from the field and 39% from 3
I remember looking at those mock drafts and thinking like why the hell Edey isn’t a top 5 pick… Sometimes we all just overthink shyt I guess..! But that was just stupid..!
The difference is in a game you don’t know where you are going beforehand and can’t practice it for weeks. You have to react. The combine results can be what they are but in an actual game he doesn’t move like those numbers say. He’s lumbering and slow with heavy feet. If he doesn’t nail his initial positioning he’s dead in the water.
12:50 his foul numbers were lower in college because they told him to contest less shots to keep him out of foul trouble due to how important he was on offense
@@RustyShakleford01Yeah, and if someone so much as breathed on him, they were assessed 3 fouls. It was aggravating as hell. Yes, he's big, but over the backs just didn't exist where he was concerned.
I can admit when I’m wrong. I didn’t see this in him as a fit. I didn’t think he’d fit because I didn’t think he could play outside. I felt his foot speed would limit him guarding small centers but he’s shown he’s not as slow as I thought and he’s a better shooter. I didn’t see him play like this in college. Oh well I’ll own it. I got Ben Simmons, jahlil Okafor and Tyler Hansbrough (sp?) correct.
Interesting, when so called experts dismissed Zach Edey, for whatever reasons, I saw during his college years the drive and improvements to succeed in the NBA. I don't know what his injury is but up till then he's shown great potential. Another fellow Canadian, Olivier Rioux, makes me wonder if someone so tall can play in the NBA.
Olivier Rioux sucks. He doesn't have the skills nor the speed and stamina to play in the NBA. He's too tall and unathletic. That's why olivier is ranked so low and isn't even that good on his team
He sprained his ankle, and you would expect the Grizzlies to be suuuuper careful when bringing him back, because they're probably not really thinking about the regular season, they're most likely focused on the postseason.
All those busted big that werent ultra athletic or sharpshooters would still be in the nba if they were 7'4 lol. The reason they failed is because they werent long, tall, athletic and or strong enough to still get their shots off. Edey is all of those things other than maybe secondary lateral quickness and is more skilled than most of them were, stronger than most of them were and most importantly reads the floor and passes out of the post at a high level
I think he will do just fine and he seems like a nice young man. Boy wouldn't it have been something if he stayed in hockey and been a winger over 7 foot tall?
Eddy is Nice a double double machine Reminds me alot of a young pau minus the mid range gasol had hes more similar to marc gasol good footwork and hands 🏀 💯
I love how all the people who condescendingly told us he wouldn’t make it are now condescendingly telling us what was always obvious and they dismissed, as if they’re a beacon of enlightenment.
I lose track of players when they get into the nba. Can’t stand to watch it. I will remember Zach taking his turn cutting down the nets. He promptly took his piece of net and gave it to Gene Keady. What a classy move
As a Spurs fan, I was worried when the Grizzlies picked up Edey. Sure, he may not have as many tools as Wemby, but I feel he'll give Wemby some headaches whenever the Spurs play the Grizzlies. Nice to see a low post big doing alright in the modern NBA regardless.
Nice piece, but the one thing I never hear about Edey… he’s super competitive! This kid has some sh&t in his game. Did no one see him go after Valancuinas?!
The jazz could have easily promised him the 28th pick and he woulve stayed in the draft. He went 1 pick before them this year and im pretty sure they had him at the top of their board. Ainge would light up anytime edey was brought up in the offseason
You missed the part when he played on the bronze-medal winning Team Canada at the 2023 World Cup, and he only made every single shot he took in the tourney...The Raptors would have taken him if he fell out of the lottery...
One of the main reasons why people doubt Edey is because of the favoritism shown to him in terms of fouls. The Big 10 ref crew had no idea on how to ref games with Edey in them and it basically became the wild west and he was able to get away with a lot and also draw insane foul and free throw totals which allowed him to heavily inflate his stats. As soon as they played in the Tournament or out of conference games, his foul numbers skyrocketed and he wasn't drawing as many fouls for free throws
He's not quite that type of shot blocker yet. Clingan is a better shot blocker and was drafted before him. But we'll see if he can develop that side of his game to be an elite blocker. Something people aren't talking about is his shooting. In his 4 year college career he attempted two 3's, both in his final season. Now, in the NBA, he's already shot 10 of them and made.. SIX of them. He's shooting 60% from 3. His free throw percentage has also dramatically improved from his first stretch of games to his last. I guarantee you he will have a 3pt shot like brook lopez but likely better. This is the development you see with players who started playing basketball late and who have high athletic potential (dude was playing hockey and baseball at the same time and was nationally ranked in both).
@@homerthompson416 I think the trade was insurance for the future considering the Spurs will be facing awkward spikes in salaries once Sochan and Wemby's rookie contracts end. The math wont work for them sunce vassell and keldon are already signed to expensive long term contracts

Hell maybe even put the Spurs in a position to trade for him by giving Minnesota control of their drafts back so they can properly tank. I’ll be the first to say it, I was a big time doubter and he has out played my predictions for sure. Likable guy, I hope he does to be honest.

He's evolved nicely so far this year. I could see him becoming a poor man's jokic wth his foot work and finesse. He's a competent shooter, just needs to get better in the corners
Jokic? How would he be like Jokic who can shoot from anywhere and is a top 3 passer. Edey has more potential then most realize and i recognize that but your comments are out of line
I said before last year, 2023, Draft, that if Edey was in it, if I were the Mavs, I would take him in 1st round. They drafted Lively, bc they needed a center, but how much better would they have been last year with Edey underneath??
Multi sport players translate because it is about being competitive and a love to win, it's about the game, after "the bag" was introduced players stopped wanting to play for the game. They played for money and fame, no one really has heart anymore. Kobe was part of a dying breed of players who loved the game, this modern era has no heart and that's what it truly misses.
I was a freshman at Purdue the same year as Edey he was honestly awful as a freshman. Came back his sophomore season and played a solid contributing role under all big 101 teamer Trevion Williams. His development from sophomore to junior year and then again the jump from junior to senior proved everything to me he has only been paying competitive basketball since his junior year of high school, and if he continues to develop, we will remember him as one of the best NBA centers of all time.
The number of fouls for a rookie is not a concern. He is learning the speed of the game and where he needs to be to make good defensive plays. Keep in mind that his teammate, Jaren Jackson Jr, also had a lot of fouls his rookie season, then won Defensive Player of the Year. If they work together on his defense, the Grizzlies starting Bigs would wreak havoc on anyone coming into the paint.
According to ChatGPT -- which confirmed my own beliefs 😀... What is the bias called when comparing an NBA player only to the past and ignoring his actual current and potential abilities? Answer: This bias is often referred to as anchoring bias or status quo bias. Anchoring Bias: This occurs when someone fixates on initial information (e.g., past performance) and fails to adjust their assessment adequately based on new or current information. In this case, the player’s past performance overly influences how they are judged, rather than considering their current abilities and potential growth. Status Quo Bias: This reflects a preference for the current or historical state of things, resisting change or reevaluation, which could result in ignoring the player's evolution or potential. Both biases could lead to undervaluing or overvaluing a player's true abilities.
I think the reason successful college stars struggle in the NBA is their mentality. They get intimidated, back down, and don’t live up to their potential. I don’t believe it’s usually because their talent was evaluated wrongly.
It always seemed crazy to Purdue fans. Edey came to Purdue with 2 years of basketball experience. 2 friggin years. Immediately you could see the difference from other centers, and Purdues had a bunch of good ones. His quickness was always noticeable but missed by the casual fan. His athleticism was always under the radar to the national media (but I guarantee you not to opposing coaches and players and the smart scouts like the ones at Memphis). He was so unexpectedly better than even Purdue thought that he kicked an All-American caliber center into a (very valuable) bench player. If you watch an old Purdue game with any favorable bias toward Edey, you'll be amazed at the double and triple teams with un-called fouls by the dozens in almost every game that he fought through, still scoring 30 regularly. In the referees defense, if they actually called all the fouls, every opposing team would have had no players left by halftime. Haters liked to claim Edey was actually the one committing the fouls, because he has elbows attached to his massive arms. But the NBA doesn't allow defense like that, so watch Edey get more and more comfortable on offense. It's GOOD that no one knew he could shoot the three, because Purdue didn't want him to. A selfish player might have shot them anyway, but Edey is TEAM FIRST and will do what is asked of him. Grizzlies didn't need him to be the focal point of the offense, but if they did, he could. As it is, Jenkins wants a frantic pace and has the studs to do it, so Edey "surprisingly", as a rookie, is, once again, learning and successfully adapting. So yeah, you better back up if you smack Ja or stupidly try to run down a Sequoia tree named Edey. Unlike most of you players that started in AAU when you were 6, Zach Edey was playing HOCKEY until 6 years ago. Thinking you might not really want to test his fighting skills, I'm betting he's a little more comfortable with it than you. And to you "draft doubters" you got a steal at #9. Hopefully you're starting to realize how incredibly well you drafted this year, at ALL picks.
This is why I hate the NBA now 2x national player of the year massive guy who dominated in the paint but he's not NBA ready because he didn't chuck up a ton of 3's during college

You sound like someone that hasn’t accomplished anything.
@@ATH-camUser1yep, always those kinds of people that are quick to critique others' accomplishments when they have none themselves
When you see a college player improve each year in college, you know he is working his but off. No unnecessary comments on him should be made until after the 1st year. He continues to work hard he is going to make it in the NBA.
He was the number one player who I thought was NBA ready, critics stink.
4 years of college make players NBA ready... always have. Why the decline of NBA... everything.
I knew right away that Edey was going to be a lottery pick, and it's simply crazy that so many people thought otherwise
Oh I'm sure Atlanta must regret having taken Risacher over Edey by now...
@@A350Airways no not really. the Hawks front office is stupid for not trading Capela like 3 seasons ago, so they wouldn't have taken Edey no matter what. But over his last 7 games, Risachier is shooting 47% from the field and 39% from 3
i never doubted him. he'll do just fine when he figures it all out. might take a season or two but, he'll be a great player if he can stay healthy.
Dudes a baller. Great for the Memphis tbh
I remember looking at those mock drafts and thinking like why the hell Edey isn’t a top 5 pick… Sometimes we all just overthink shyt I guess..! But that was just stupid..!
Averaging about 12 ppg on 61% shooting and 7 boards doesn't sound bad for a "miscalculation"
edey is pretty fast tho. he beat a bunch of guards at the combine in terms of how quick he was in his lane agility time. 1:35
7:19 oh i see you touched on this. haha 😂 my bad haha. great video
😂 Thank you!
That's probably why he is so good
The difference is in a game you don’t know where you are going beforehand and can’t practice it for weeks. You have to react.
The combine results can be what they are but in an actual game he doesn’t move like those numbers say.
He’s lumbering and slow with heavy feet. If he doesn’t nail his initial positioning he’s dead in the water.
I think that’s an error of his leg length he covers more ground by nature but he is still slow
12:50 his foul numbers were lower in college because they told him to contest less shots to keep him out of foul trouble due to how important he was on offense
He fouled like hell and got away with it.
@@RustyShakleford01Yeah, and if someone so much as breathed on him, they were assessed 3 fouls. It was aggravating as hell. Yes, he's big, but over the backs just didn't exist where he was concerned.
Did this guy just call Robbie Hummel a traditional back to the basket big?!? Lmao, Hummel was not even a big.
You're right 🤦♂ that was a miscommunication
Man, seeing that name makes me sad.
@@thecheck-up shame on you, Rob is a saint!
Hummel scored 30 in the first half once at Purdue!
A 7'4 major league Pithcer would have been Wwwiled.
In the past few years it seems like if the grizzlies draft a player they will pan out well. The organization is so perfect for a small market
Great vid, very professional, no fat.
Might be a little early to make a call on this one. He's played 14 games so far.
His looks are deceiving. He doesn't really look athletic but he is actually pretty darn athletic for his size.
They was hating on Edey because he looks like Yao Ming
Why would that be a bad thing to look like a HOFer?
I gotta admit that I didn't therapist game would translate in the NBA but I'm glad I was wrong. I hope Zach sees continued success at the pro level.
I just saw his Wikipedia page, didn't realize he is half Chinese.
He looks like it lfmaooo no way
His game will improve as he gains muscle mass. Imagine him at 320 lbs!

Great overview!
Edey won the Wooden Award.. National Award.. John Wooden graduated from Purdue 1932.. :) Go Boilers!
My basketball TH-cam GOAT Clayton Crowley talking about my actual GOAT Zach Edey? This is a beautiful day
I liked the look of him coming into the draft. He seems like a good kid
Players like Edey will bring back post-ups
3.4 seconds isn't "MUCH MUCH FASTER" then 3.5 seconds, I'm just saying ✌️
Rasheed Wallace said Edey should go #1 overall. Everyone argued with him.
As a Lakers fan I was hoping for him to drop at 17
I think he will do just fine and he seems like a nice young man. Boy wouldn't it have been something if he stayed in hockey and been a winger over 7 foot tall?
He learned from a really good college coach. Painter is smart and a great teacher of the game.
Nice to see a low post big doing alright in the modern NBA regardless.
willing to admit I was wrong about Edey, I clowned memphis for taking him at 9 and now he looks like a steal
is this clayton crowley?
it has GOT TO be😭
OH MY GOD THERE'S HIS FACE
YOU CANT SAY IM NOT AN OG
It has to be Brodie!!
All of the people who doubt edey are going to be looking even worse in another season. He hasn't even been playing this sport for a decade yet...
Nice piece, but the one thing I never hear about Edey… he’s super competitive! This kid has some sh&t in his game. Did no one see him go after Valancuinas?!
I wanna see him against wemby same height but polar opposites
His success is the definition of it matters who drafts you …any other team would have fumbled his career
Edey was a beast in college
I wanted the Spurs to get Edey. A freaking no fly zone within the 3 point line lol
Stephon Castle is better. Spurs are right.
@@niki8280 Agreed, in a redraft I'd still take Steph at #4. Could have taken Edey #8 though.
@@homerthompson416 I think the trade was insurance for the future considering the Spurs will be facing awkward spikes in salaries once Sochan and Wemby's rookie contracts end. The math wont work for them sunce vassell and keldon are already signed to expensive long term contracts
@@niki8280 I think it was more a bet on the Timberwolves falling apart and eventually losing Ant based on the chaos with their ownership. Hell maybe even put the Spurs in a position to trade for him by giving Minnesota control of their drafts back so they can properly tank. Keldon's not gonna get another big money contract so he's no worry and Wemby won't be eligible for significant money until 27-28 at the earliest. No idea what kind of money Sochan will be able to pull in 26-27 when he's eligible for his first big extension.
I’ll be the first to say it, I was a big time doubter and he has out played my predictions for sure. I still don’t think his ceiling is much higher than what we see, he has proven me wrong in college (didn’t think he could take them as far as he did in the tournament) and now the NBA, and I’m sure he could do it again if I’m honest. Likable guy, I hope he does to be honest.
I would be intetested to hear what you have to say about Marcus Smart getting traded to the Grizzlies last season
If we redrafted, he'd be picked at 9 again
Yup but for better reasons.
Naw. Right now with how the picks are looking Edey would be 7th if we kept the same player positions drafted and if not he'd crack T5.
When you see the few guys ahead of him, its definitely a safe argument he jumps at least 2 spots
Nah. Detroit would have drafted him at #5
@@hdhdhzh259 I'm not sure that 3 guys have been better. For fit and role, he's in the perfect market. We love us a monster in the paint in Memphis.
I wonder how would Edey stack up against Atlanta's bigs... would Atlanta have traded an existing big for some help on the wings?
"NBA draft "ANALYST" KRISTAN PEAK"
Maybe someone should tell her ZACK EDEY has WAY more business being an NBA prospect.....than SHE does being a NBA "DRAFT ANALYST"
“Hmmm this gus sounds like Clayton Crowley”
Then tada it is indeed Clayton 😂😂😂😂
how come there was no such speculation on Spurs' french giant last season? damn i forgot his name...
Big is a defensive position now. Gotta be able to run the 2-5 on offense whether you’re 6’8 or 7’8.
I never really underestimated him. He dominated college for years like prime shaq would have
Brook Lopez’s successor if he gets better at 3s
He became super efficient in college... at his size... only thing that can stop him is an injury. Some so called expert talking heads need to be fired.
Media and nba teams are too caught up with the curry warriors era .
Answer:
This bias is often referred to as anchoring bias or status quo bias.
Both biases could lead to undervaluing or overvaluing a player's true abilities.
because ncaa doesnt really prepare them for the nba
I think the reason successful college stars struggle in the NBA is their mentality. They get intimidated, back down, and don’t live up to their potential. I don’t believe it’s usually because their talent was evaluated wrongly.
Guy plays as one of the best centers in the league
One could say he’s making the case for Edey
I have hope in Edey as I still have hope for bol bol
i wonder how johni broome is going to do in the draft
This is why I hate the NBA now 2x national player of the year massive guy who dominated in the paint but he's not NBA ready because he didn't chuck up a ton of 3's during college
