I have been around guitarists for decades and whenever they ask for requests I always say this song and they just laugh and tell me that there is only one person who can play it and that’s Steve Vai.
I remember when I first saw him live in Belgrade, Serbia in 2005. Although we saw many live videos of his performances we all listened to this in complete silence with our jaws dropped. It's something completely different watching him in person. After he finished performing this piece a guy standing next to me turned around and started pushing through the crowd towards the exit. His friend asked him where was he going and he yelled "I'm going home to throw away my guitar, get drunk and cry in the corner".
Make sure the most recent like you've pressed is the odd number of times you've pressed it before. I mean liking a like cancels it 😅😅 Sorry for my weird humour.
This is actually my first time listening to Steve Vai and all i can say is " ". Words can't actually describe how beautifully composed this performance was, and just how incredibly talented this man is. Rock on brotha!
Ive tried tp like him. Cant stand his note arrangements and harmonics. Technically there right, but man are they god awful to listen to. Cant stand his music but hes a cool guy for sure.
I lost my mom when I was in 8th grade my dad to cancer before my and his birthday last month. Somthing about the guitar and how it’s almost like the instrument can cry just touches me in ways other music seldom does, and I primarily listen to hip pop but when I want to clarity, feeling, to think, to be with and understand my self and feelings. There is no better then a guitar instrumental, especially one like this.
Steve is the God of guitar. He should be considered one of the best composers of all time. He allows the guitar to breath and expresses its full versatility and spirit. He is a son of Hendrix, and will always be my favorite musician.
Check out Frank Marino live and Babyalon instrumental version this guy from Montreal Canada is best guitar player i have ever seen and have seen some of the best since the early 1960s he was around in the early 1970s you will be amazed .take care
So good. Gotta love the Conductor s smile. This is real Music. Beyond words. Vai s music has a lasting effect that goes beyond the performance. Saw him Live in Nashville. I hesitate to say it but the Music is intoxicating. The dedication to craft is inspiring.
WOW...!!! It's been along time since I've heard Steve play.... Used to be a big fan years ago... Just discovered this today, 11-5-2020 and, DAMN! I'm a recommitted fan again! He hasn't lost any of his extraordinary MAGIC!!! WOW! WOW! WOW! I think GOD would be pleased with Steve's love gift!
Being at one with the instrument cannot be taught. Trusting instinct is a step too far for many. The ability to let go and fly on the edge of control, that is the mark of a master. My life would be less if I never heard this. Thank you.
This is instrumental rock at its best - the composition, the passion and emotion generated by the music, the dynamics, everything. Steve, you are a musical genius. :)
That's where some guitarists lose me: wasted notes. Watch a video of Eric Johnson playing Cliffs of Dover live and the ability is INSANE, but he takes two minutes before he can make me feel anything. Mr. Vai, on the other hand, has me soaring in feeling from beginning to end.
XistoKente there's some real morons on here that say he is ...ahem....Mechanical, no heart, plays too fast, no feeling , just makes noise..wastes notes..whammys too much, and is not innovative...I just have to shake my head in disgust. I've never heard people deliberately go out of thier way to try to not like his ability...there must be alot of disgruntled guitarists who can't play fast or something, it makes me laugh..they hate it if someone has more of a gift than them. Morons that don't practice thier guitar. They see someone who actually has talent and they have to try to pick apart every detail they can. Hilarious!
"For the love of god" is an italian saying "Per l'amore di dio", which is an invocation and as a supplication formula. Something like: "Please make it happen, for as much as we love god". This has little to do with Mr. Vai or his talent, he just borrowed the saying, probably from his italian grandma, to name this beautiful song, probably thinking: "Please make it happen, for as much as we love god" and he did did the his best to succeed...
Not trying to be offensive or anything, but if you are deaf how do you listen to music? Do you like feel the vibrations or something? It’s pretty amazing that you can play an instrument without being able to hear it.
@@calebm.5698 I wear powerful hearing aids that help me “hear” the music. It’s not anywhere near the same as having normal hearing but I’ll work with what I got. I play bass because I can feel it and that helps.

Perfection.... how do you replicate the studio version note for note in a live performance.. the master ....the genius..Mr Steve Vai!!.... So blessed to have seen him play this live
Harley I thought you were supposed to copy the studio version... It's your song that you recorded yourself playing, no? Maybe not exactly the same style, but the same notes, right.
It's actually not note for note. He does improvise and modify some parts. You'd know that if you knew the song well. I still reckon his best live performance of this was in the original G3 th-cam.com/video/mDZuNM3HmU4/w-d-xo.html
So, I've listened to this song since Passion & Warfare came out and to this day it still makes my hair stand up and gives me shivers. I've seen people that can play this note for note and yet there is still something lost in those covers. When Mr. Vai plays it, you can actually hear his DNA in musical notes. It's as if he has somehow melded with wood and steel and plastic to produce music many can imitate but not equal. If you look up the word incredible in the dictionary it has a picture of Mr. Vai.
Steve is the reason I ever picked an electric guitar up, I had never heard anything like it before and 3 Years later I can feel his influence in my playing. I have never had a direct tutor but simply spent time with the guitar and what I could hear and see. I listen to all genres of music from all time periods and my ear has developed tremendously compared to when I first saw this in 2021, but above any other artist this man is the driving influence, from the way my fingers move across the board to the way I hear it after it's played. - I cannot play a note in this track, but I have my own voice and Steve is the reason I found it and what I do play you can feel his influence. Others might see this as a reason to never start. I saw it as precisely why I should.
I am impressed with the coordination between guitar and orchestra. At times it felt like they were in different places then all of the sudden they are playing a riff together perfectly. That is hard to pull off.

2:29 Damn he can make that guitar sing
Ti ti ta ya tu tu thu thu te TU te
The fucking guitar just floated!
In that moment the conductor was distracted because he loved that part himself
Master
Can you imagine the pressure on the Clarinet guy? He knew damn well he better get it right.
It's an oboe 🤓
Lol
Entire orchestras part is a cake walk for those musicians. They’re used to playing new age classical and Beethoven. Not taking away from Vai’s playing here though.

bro when he first started playing i thought the same lmao. I'm like "This dude must have practiced a lot." but of course he fuckin did lol

Steve Vai is the absolute GOAT!!!! My all-time favorite guitarist and he will always be!
And this is from a 44 year drummer who loves both lead guitar and bass, that to me, if they work, you have a band!!
So good it hurts.
The notes and melodies just flow in your soul.
I can perfectly copy Steve till 2:27

Wow that is relatable

I don't understand how you can dislike such a piece of brilliant music. I got so many goosebumps from this, i really wish i had a whammy bar
Because he stole it
The people who dislike this say that "Steve Vai has no feel he's too technical"
Even with a whammy bar I think you have to start utilizing it from early on in the way these uber-guitarists do.
I got whammys and I never used it like this so I sound like a noob even after 20 some yrs playing pretty fast stuff. He got some skillz, holmes!! lol

The best performance of 'For the Love of God', in my opinion. Steve Vai in his prime here. This works so well with a live orchestra. Masterpiece!!
It's also the best performance of the theme song from the TV series "Kung Fu"!
I have been around guitarists for decades and whenever they ask for requests I always say this song and they just laugh and tell me that there is only one person who can play it and that’s Steve Vai.
You should check out Tina S's cover on youtube.
I honestly don't know how many times I've listened to this. Gives me shivers every single time.

It's because his leather pants are sticking on his butt... :-D
You mean Ulrich? That would be more obscene than what that italian man does to that poor gir... guitar.
he said 10/10 playing
I remember when I first saw him live in Belgrade, Serbia in 2005. Although we saw many live videos of his performances we all listened to this in complete silence with our jaws dropped. It's something completely different watching him in person. After he finished performing this piece a guy standing next to me turned around and started pushing through the crowd towards the exit. His friend asked him where was he going and he yelled "I'm going home to throw away my guitar, get drunk and cry in the corner".
БРАТЕЕЕЕЕЕЕЕЕ СРБИНЕ!
Great story
Vai will always be the goat imo.. His playing is like story telling. Like an ancient war of kingdoms.. I cant stop imaging epic battles in my mind..

This is actually my first time listening to Steve Vai and all i can say is " ". Words can't actually describe how beautifully composed this performance was, and just how incredibly talented this man is. Rock on brotha!
Check out "i know your here" equally as beautiful.
This was my introduction to him too,
Colin Ferris “passion and warfare”. Best album.
Ive tried tp like him. Cant stand his note arrangements and harmonics. Technically there right, but man are they god awful to listen to. Cant stand his music but hes a cool guy for sure.
If it wasn't for JOE SATRIANI !!!
this man plays with such passion, it brought tears to my eyes.
To anyone who doesn’t play guitar: This is very hard.
Awesome to see that people are still coming to watch the amazing performance
Vai is a musical genius
Is it hard because of all that you have to do with your hands?
@@jazzielarias4300 The most difficult part is to capture the emotions
Very hard even for those who play guitar
Masterpiece. One of the best instrumentals by Vai ever.
What happens at 4:36 is pure magic. WOW
Also at 6:21🥲
5:38 I like when he does this stuff. The force is so strong.
Absolutely
It’s 4:13 for me, just that one high D note over that E chord just… 😩🤤
Steve Vai has got to be one of the greatest guitarist in the world today!!!!
Hope your doing alright mate, They are in peace now
Steve is the God of guitar. He should be considered one of the best composers of all time. He allows the guitar to breath and expresses its full versatility and spirit. He is a son of Hendrix, and will always be my favorite musician.
Nope.
Check out Frank Marino live and Babyalon instrumental version this guy from Montreal Canada is best guitar player i have ever seen and have seen some of the best since the early 1960s he was around in the early 1970s you will be amazed .take care
There's no need for copyright on this, literally noone can play like this
maybe its for the other instruments
Tina S.
Tina S can
even if someone can it doesn't matter, imagine COMPOSING this
Jill from Unlucky Morpheus can play this song on a violin
So good. Gotta love the Conductor s smile. This is real Music. Beyond words. Vai s music has a lasting effect that goes beyond the performance. Saw him Live in Nashville. I hesitate to say it but the Music is intoxicating. The dedication to craft is inspiring.
Man you can really see the emotion he is putting into his playing
Jaiden Damarelos it’s what separates the ok guitarist from the insane ones
Well that applies anything about music. The insane ones are those with emotions
ZyronKyle Pontillas exactly
The way he plays is almost... erotic
He's got dat FEEEEEEEL
Just incredible Speed AND Passion. I see so many "shredders" but lifeless notes, they say nothing.
4:48 that tongue. Man.. He's living the song
Each one of those people in the orchestra can say."Back in the day I Jammed with Steve Vai!
🤘
There's a very valid reason why Zappa employed this man.
Good Taste
He learned a lot about composing from Frank.
Melhor performance de um guitarrista que eu vi até hoje, literalmente sensacional, o que esse mestre faz com a guitarra é de arrepiar !!!
The music, the guitar, that man… everything about this song is so perfect. Never gettin tires of this masterpiece
I never do either. ❤️🔥
Having taken band classes my entire time in grade school I can appreciate the use of a good orchestra.
I am completely speechless. The studio version from Passion and Warfare is great, but this live version with orchestra is PHENOMENAL.
Being at one with the instrument cannot be taught. Trusting instinct is a step too far for many. The ability to let go and fly on the edge of control, that is the mark of a master. My life would be less if I never heard this. Thank you.
5:13 when I finally see the roach

This is instrumental rock at its best - the composition, the passion and emotion generated by the music, the dynamics, everything. Steve, you are a musical genius. :)
***** Hohoho. I stand corrected. :)
Timliu92 ok
Hilarious!
Guitardudeguy TMark/Osh i think they were being sarcastic when they say steve has no feel😄
Never seen a guitarist like him before, damn how deep is this masterpiece
Ciauscolo Lollobrigido I’m glad you found this. It’s very moving and grabs your soul and takes you on a journey . Perfection 👍🏻
He wrote the orchestration
He used to practice at least 10 hours a day, and it shows. You can hear a lot of Zappa in his playing and you don't have to listen very hard.
Mutant fingers. That is only way I can explain this gentleman's increcible talent. I am blown away. This is a high all unto itself.
Steve Vai is such a humble guy, he named the song "For the love of God" instead of "For the love of Steve Vai".
it has the same meaning
God and Steve vai are the same person
For the love of Frank Zappa
"For the love of god" is an italian saying "Per l'amore di dio", which is an invocation and as a supplication formula. Something like: "Please make it happen, for as much as we love god". This has little to do with Mr. Vai or his talent, he just borrowed the saying, probably from his italian grandma, to name this beautiful song, probably thinking: "Please make it happen, for as much as we love god" and he did did the his best to succeed...
Gio Frongia is also an spanish expression por el amor de dios
I’m a deaf bassist and I’d love to perform this song with Steve Vai and his band someday. That would be the thrill of a lifetime.

Still probably my favorite Vai tune. I remember chilling to this on my bus commute back in college. Still holds up today!
1:50 Steve must feel like a god watching this masterpiece that he wrote be played in front of his own eyes by this magnificent orchestra.

Supposedly he did the studio version in one take (probably not the first take but still)
It's actually not note for note.
Steve is also a great bandmaster.
At this level, they make it look easy, too.
