      If you can get trading to work between the Gamecube games and GBA games to work, Playing through Colosseum and XD will save you a ton of work. You would have to play through FRLG and Emerald Three times to obtain the Legendary Beasts and Johto Starters respectivly otherwise. Playing through Colosseum one gets you all of them and the Johto starters will be at level 30 too. The Beast are easier to catch as they have higher catch rates than their non Shadow counterparts. Doing it this way you can just speed through Fire Red or Leaf Green to get the other fossil. Also final stage Psuedo Legendaries and many version exclusives are all available in those games.

    The thing with Roaming is that Crystal have arguably more fun version of it early on.
    Getting an early Phanpy and Teddiursa was genuinely fun to me. They are rare, found only in the morning, and they flee 50% of the time, but designing a strategy to get them (using Poliwag/Bellsprout) was quite exhilarating.
    Not sure how much I forgot the frustrating part, but it stay as a fun memory, and it was worth it because I had two absolute powerhouse in my team for the entire game.

    Oh yea. Gen 2 was the game where the gender was tied to the attack DV. So especially for a 1/8 female species like Eevee, the only females have 0-1 atk DV. Thankfully they fixed that in later gens.

    • @TheTundraTerror

      hahhahahahaha what the hell that's screwed up!

    • @patsen29
      @patsen29 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      It kind of made sense, since they wanted Gen 1 imports to be consistent, and before personality values, DVs were the only stable hidden values. But that call was messed up.

    • @shytendeakatamanoir9740
      @shytendeakatamanoir9740 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      @@TheTundraTerror It makes Whitney actually harder since you need lower Attack to be immune to attract.
      It also means Eevee and the starters can't be female and Shiny, due to IVs (well, they were called DVs at the time) also determining Shininess.
      It also applies to Gen 1, technically even of it only become relevant after transfer.

    • @patsen29
      @patsen29 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Exactly. Because shininess is tied to DV, you can catch something in Gen 1, then trade it to Gen 2, and it can become shiny. No matter how many times you trade/trade back.

    Thanks for making the videos and addressing feedback. I look forward to seeing gen3. A forewarning for gen3 that you WILL want to know about: There is a place in Dewford Town where you can change the settings of a popular word (or something to that extent). By doing so, you will change the locations in which Feebas appear on Route 119. Feebas only appears in 6 specific tiles on that route so you will need [Surf, Waterfall, Cut, Acro/Mach Bike (different area access for each), and a fishing rod] and you will need to check each tile 4-5 times to see if there is a Feebas there because the spawn rate is 20-25%. Also, you don't need to trade to evolve it, instead you can feed it pokeblocks to increase it's beauty (to max), then level it up. Trading is easier if the option is available though. This is probably the hardest pokemon to find in this gen so I wanted to give you some heads up so you won't suffer as much when you start gen 3. Wishing you the best of luck going into gen 3. I would send you money if I wasn't broke, so if anyone out there is rich enough and wants to send you money on my behalf, I encourage them to do so (as long as they're nice about it).

    • @MmeCShadow
      @MmeCShadow ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Unfortunately the Prism Scale wasn't introduced until Gen 5 so you have to max out Beauty in order to evolve Milotic in Gen 3.
      Make sure the Feebas you intend to evolve doesn't dislike Dry blocks, too. It's possible to get a Feebas that can't benefit enough from Dry blocks (Beauty stat) to actually max out and evolve, at least without making perfect Pokeblocks.

    • @Whiteythereaper
      @Whiteythereaper ปีที่แล้ว

      Since he's using emulator he can use the PKhex plugin to look up what his current Feebas tiles are on his save if he struggles, but with it being a 50% with Super rod it won't take long to find

    I always look forward to your videos! I also really like the addition of this retrospective video, if possible, I would love to see one for Gen III once that project is complete. Try to not feel bad about the emulators though. Sometimes it's a necessity and sometimes it's for convenience, but there's no judgement from my end. I didn't realize how bad your situation was during the Gen I videos, I found the channel around when you started Gen II. And yet, despite all the hardship, you were still a delight to watch. I sometimes wish I had that kind of strength. Though no one deserves to have to give up something special to them in order to live. I hope everything keeps getting better for you. You deserve it! And thank you for entertaining me so much! My favorite video of yours to date is still the first Gen II video! The whole fish saga has stuck with my friend and I and we regularly scream "FISH" at each other now. I also, personally, greatly enjoyed the Gym Destruction commentary. It breathed new life into me! It makes me happy to know my silly video has provided you and your friend some great moments :'D
      I enjoy the first Gen 2 video a lot as well! I was able to fit quite a few jokes, as well as keep a good pace throughout the video. I think after all the Gen 1 gameplay, I was very inspired being finally able to play a new Pokémon game! That first video with the stream highlights from the last episode is definitely my goal for the Gen 3 videos. With a few extra surprises along the way!
      As far as the retrospective video goes though, it wasn't very fun to make. Maybe because it is different from the rest of the content, I don't know, but putting everything together was a lot tougher than anticipated, and hindered my progress on the Gen 3 guide and content. The conclusion of Gen 3 is far away, so I can't say anything for certain, but for now, I wouldn't want to do a Gen 3 retrospective. One extra reason might be that I intend on streaming every single step of the process as well. So there will be no secrets to share ;')
      Hopefully, I can make content you enjoy watching and that is worth the trust you put in me. See you in Emerald!

      I think I'll do it, but I won't do it fully legit. I'll allow myself to duplicate save files if it helps me avoid redoing things and having to catch the same pokemon over and over again, and I'll use and abuse rare candy dupes. But I'll play through all Red, Green, Blue and Yellow (JP versions).

    Hi Lyra! You might have seen me comment on a few of your other vids. Its only somewhat surprising that even though I only did a 251 pokedex, I seemed to have a lot of the same problems that you did. I didn't see a legendary dog at all until I deliberately started looking. I only found a single shiny, outside of our red scaly friend. The stone problem is sure a problem in GSC. I still had a TON of fun myself too. I was actually able to play on my phone and trade with myself using My Old Boy! I knew about swarms and how to trap the legendary beasts thanks to having an old GSC Versus Strategy Guide from childhood.
    Anyways, I'm glad you had fun and I can't want to see RSE as well as Gen4 someday!

    Great vids Lyra, your gen 2 living dex series coincided with my decision to upload a virtual console GBC-caught living dex to pokemon home (probably not too big a coincidence, since they announced the death of 3ds online support) and they were enormously helpful as well as entertaining. Very much appreciate your style, and your website kicks ass! In practice, I think if you ever get around to making a pokedex tracker for gen 3, a really helpful feature would be the ability to add some sort of secondary marking on each pokemon - for pokemon that need to evolve I would usually catch 2 or 3 of them in their youngest form and then evolve them later, but in some cases I would forget which lines I caught duplicates for and which ones I didn't, and couldn't quite figure out a clever way to keep track of that.
    Happy things are improving for you, I've also seen some tough times and know how that can be. Hoping to see you tackle gen 3 before they drop it on NSO!

    Ahhh, the beasts in Gen 2. So, so... "fun"... While I never did living dex back in the day (due to how horrendously grindy it is, as you discovered!), I HAVE done a full pokedex run in silver a couple times before, and boy do you find out how hard they make it to get every pokemon in this gen... for nostalgic reasons it's still my favorite Gen, but the games are kiiiind of a nightmare to actually play, but it was very fun to see your adventure going through the games! You don't do everything perfectly, obviously, but you do it with such a genuine outlook that so reminds me of my own dex runs back in the day -- not mechcanically optimized to the point of a speedrun, but planned out to a more human degree, with plenty of room for plenty of errors, shenanigans, learning, and fun. These vids are genuinely a joy to watch, not just an expert speedrun of a pokedex, or a completely blind playthrough, but someone with a real passion for the spirit of what the Pokemon games represent.

    What a great journey! I really appreciate all the time and effort you made to bring us this series. Nonetheless, I do want to share some thoughts for anyone who would try to engage in this challenge based upon particular points you shared during this video:
    1) 11:06 Yes, I do agree that if the goal is to make this Living Dex approach a real challenge then it would be desirable to avoid the use of cheats of any kind. However, how about glitches? Those don't involve the use of external devices nor require the modification of original hardware to get them set up but they could provide a HUGE advantage for the player if used correctly. One particular scenario that comes to my mind is the use of the cloning glitch to be able to get all 3 Johto starters at the beginning of the game. However, considering the goal of a Living Dex then one just could repeat the glitch 8 times to get 3 of each starter and just level them up at the end of the game. Or even better, clone a lot of Rare Candies and Master Balls to significantly speed up the whole process altogether!
    2) 19:32 I must have to disagree with that statement. I used to do Bulbasaur % (yes, Bulbasaur, not Venusar) speedruns of Pokémon R/B and the "best" moveset for fast time is Solarbeam/Mimic/Sleep Powder/Growth. Why? Because that would allow us to abuse the good ol' "Badge Boost Glitch" as soon as possible while also allowing you to punish Agatha by mimicking Dream Eater, so you don't get completely walled by her whole roster. People love to praise Razor Leaf's auto crit to death, but also forget that Gen I crits also ignore your own boosts! Finally, given Gen I broken sleep mechanics that same Pokémon would become a pretty decent catcher on its own (backed up with the fact that you also demonstrated that Gen I catching mechanics are also broken).
    3) 29:52 Just another excuse for me to incite the use of glitches to get a partial Shiny Living Dex using the Ditto glitch in Gen I! That would become more of a hatching madness than a catching journey but for anyone willing to give it a try then by all means!
    4) 38:12 Another good excuse to point out that "knowledge is power". The whole roaming beasts issue could be almost trivialised if we know how the things are layed out from the beginning. Therefore I do still invite anyone interested to check out the great work made by HangarOfRoam and their colleagues regarding the whole hunting method. With enough planning you could (eventually) have gotten a Shiny* Entei as soon as your first ever Silver playthrough by using one of the tactics covered by them!
    5) 40:07 Good point! I do kind of agree with your statement regarding "challenges". However, Pokémon at its core and just considering the in-game mechanics isn't a "challenging" game at all if you have a basic idea of how does them work. Now, regarding catching the issue is that the whole process is just random and being extremely objective it doesn't require any amount of skill at all to complete! The proof is what did you say: if I throw a ball (any ball) as soon as possible and it does succeed then I'm done. Random events wouldn't even need to be considered "challenging" per se, the only "challenge" is the one imposed by our own patience and "willpower" to persevere until the odds go into our favour.
    And that's it! An apology for the text wall and thanks again for releasing this video as I loved the way you comprehensively addressed most of our inquiries as a whole and that's a pretty considered way to show us how much do you care about us. Best regards!

      When I mentioned how much I appreciate how passionate people are and how eager they are to share their own opinion and knowledge of the Pokémon games, your comment is definitely what I had in mind! Thank you very much for taking the time to explain your personal point of view :'D
      At the end of the day, I think you and I have a different opinion when it comes to glitches. While I do love learning about them and seeing their use in all kinds of fun challenges and speedruns, I equate them to cheats as far as normal gameplay is concerned. Having watched my fair share of Jrose videos, it is very hard to ignore the existence of the Badge Boost glitch. However, I decided to not use it, as well as anything not "legitimate", except when absolutely necessary (like the Mew glitch or the Celebi cheat).
      I thoroughly loved reading your comment though, as it reminded me of one of my favorite aspect of the Pokémon games: we may enjoy the games in different ways, but we can both agree we have a lot of fun with them :'D
      Hopefully, I will see you in Gen 3. Know your criticism of my playthrough will be appreciated there as well!

    VBA-M has linking functionality. I’ve never tried it for Gen 1/2 Pokémon but I’ve done it with GBA games (and different ones at that. Once I looked up how it works, I got MegaMan Battle Network 4 and Zero 3 to link for the Z-Saber chip). Of course, do what’s most comfortable for you, but if you’re going to stick with emulating Gen 3 it might be easier to keep everything within the same emulator (especially for Colosseum and XD on Dolphin to link to the GBA games. You need to use VBA-M or mGBA)

      @@saxor96 yeah, in general I've found that GBA emulators seem a little iffy when it comes to linking GB/GBC games. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, and I've also observed instances where some combinations of game versions work and some don't for no apparent reason (and yes, to clarify, I tested with combinations that are explicitly intended to work, and this wasn't even trying to link Gen 1 with Gen 2). But it seems to work fine in BGB, for example, which only does GB/GBC. The saves are compatible anyway, so I'd use mGBA for playing and then switch to BGB for trades since BGB was a bit clunkier to use.

    As you said, the Pokemon Stadium games are great for their PC management and item storage abilities, and Stadium 2 would be the perfect place to keep the Living Dex once it's completed. It is important to note, however, that while you can trade Pokemon freely between games, you cannot deposit a Pokemon from one game and then withdraw it into a separate game unless the game that's withdrawing the Pokemon already has the National Dex completed. It's not a massive issue, but it could be an issue in some circumstances.

    • @tree_tape
      @tree_tape ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Lol, it's a classic French thing, but it's not popular enough with English speakers for it to be part of the stereotype of how French people speak English. French people (especially from Quebec, because they actually make an effort to pronounce the H, whereas people from France often make it silent) often end up putting H's where they don't belong because it's alien to them yet they're very conscious about its existence, if that makes sense. It's a new sound they have to think about, and being overly conscious about it makes it pop up in random places where it shouldn't be. A classic word that gets a lot of French people (that make an effort to pronounce the H) is "headache". I guess it's the anticipation of the having to make the effort of pronouncing this new letter that trips them up, so you'll often hear something like "head-hache" from them.
      Personally, I also knew French way before English, but I never had this issue because I was already used to the H sound due to my mother tongue having it. Anyway, the more you know!
