- Have you ever played a Pokemon game and wondered what it would take to do the monstrous task of completing the pokedex in a pokemon game? Well I am going to go through EVERY Pokemon game and show just what it takes to complete them and which are the hardest and longest to do

Butterfree is a good way to help catch things in gen 1 because it's available early, in every version, is fully evolved at a low level, and learns sleep powder very quick; sleep status makes things much easier to catch! (Bulbasaur knows sleep powder too, but not til lvl41, and you can't start with Bulba in Yellow). if you try filling pokedex in other gens, look for somethin that can induce sleep early, it'll help you avoid running out of pokeballs and definitely speed things up.
Oh yeah, I definitely took that into account for my current gen 2 playthrough, as I caught an oddish in Ilex Forest, and it learns sleep powder at level 18
Pikachu with Thunder Wave at Level 8 is useful as well.
When Gen 1 came out on the 3ds , I knew it was the time to finish what I never did as a child , finish the pokedex on pokemon yellow LEGIT. I did , I love it as an achievement, and I hang my diploma at home :) , back then I used the same rules you used..... Then I did Gen 2 and that shit was tough.....I recently finished scarlet's pokedex......it just doesnt feel the same.....
I'm glad I found this video, I just started a Yellow Living Dex + Nuzlocke run and plan to do the same for every single game, in every generation because I hate myself I guess. I want to do all of this before Pokémon Bank support inevitably ends too, so I'm also on a vague time limit. These kinds of videos help me keep my sanity during this challenge.

If I were to try this, I'd just get an Alakazam on each file to do the heavy lifting as he pretty much 1-shots most of the pokemon in the game especially if you're feeding him all the exp, you'll never be underleveled. The only issue I could see is having a secondary pokemon to do the catching with, since 1-shotting pokemon doesn't help with catching.
In gen 1 health plays no factor in catching. Just spore with parasect and throw a great ball

I know its old but gen 1 status effects like sleep/freeze increase catch significantly hp only provides a 2% bonus, status effects cause almost a 50% catch rate
Yeah I learned partway through just how broken sleep and freeze were, but by then my team was already formed, so I didn't have anyone for them, so I stuck with paralysis

Before you get in Mt Moon you can buy a magikarp in the pokemon center. I mean, magikarp its an easy catch... But come on, my man needs to feed his family... Thats my mental lore at least
I did this the oldschool way on the GBC when I was 10 lol, looking back I have no idea how. Only cheated pokemon I had was Mew
Great video! I've done this only once myself in gen 1 and even though I have 2 gameboys and red and blue the trading still took forever! Can't imagine trying to sync 2 emulator screens.

Safari Zone was the reason I gave up on getting as full pokedex as possible without trading on the virtual console verion of Yellow. That and the fact the grinding for levels is annoying and you can't really get all that complete of a dex. I did do it in Crystal, though. It's a pretty easy time, except for the evolution zones. I probably spent days waiting for the NPC that can give you water stones to call me for the last one I needed. I think in Crystal you can get something like 230-something of 251 pokemon without even having to trade.
Btw I think it would've probably been faster to gamble for game corner coins than to get Scther and Pinsir in the Safari Zone and gring money for Porygon. The slot machine is actually really easy to cheese. Even as a kid I figured how to get the timing right to win a jackpot almost every time.
Missingno glitch let's you catch safari zone Pokemon with actually balls in an actual battle the pokemon can't run from.

Out of curiosity, what do you plan to do as far as transfers go from gen 3 onwards? Do you intend to complete gen 3, and then pull everything you can forward to gen 4, and so on?
Or "reset", ignoring transfer, and grab everything you can in a given generation before transfers?
Just wondering since I'm chipping away at a living dex myself, completed gen 3 and 4, just pulled everything from 3 to 4 myself and only caught new pokemon.
I reset. Currently, I'm working on Crystal, and I could've transfered up from this gen 1 save to get a ton of pokemon, but I felt that ruined the fun and challenge of the pokedex. Instead, I decided I would get everything I could in gen 2, then start a new gen 1 game to transfer up what's needed, so I always start from a fresh state. I'll be applying this same ruling to future generations as well

this is exactly what I'm working on myself right now, I'm gonna make it so I have to get all the pokemon in those gen games only, unless it's only possible to get the mons by trading upwards, except an extreme version I guess, I'm making a living and form dex (by form I mean even stuff like gender differences, not just like alolan and the like) but I'm playing thru EVERY mainline pokemon game, made up of only pokemon from that gen I have never used before, and each region for that gen will have a living dex (by that I mean gen 1 and 2 only had kanto and johto as a region for the game, but gen 3 had Hoenn with RSE, and Kanto with FRLG, So I'm gonna have a living dex in Emerald AND Leaf green, same with DPPt and HGSS, 1 of each will have a living dex, and no I won't be trading to the other game to fill the dex, I want both of those games boxes filled with the pokemon) and I'm gonna do this with all games (also since gen DP was handled differently as a remake compared to gen 1-3, I.E It only has gens 1-4 pokemon I'm gonna treat it as a gen 4 game so I'll play it after I beat DPPt and HGSS instead of after SWSH like how it was released, but also separate it from the gen 4 OGs and also complete a living dex in it, i also did this with LGPE, and beat those after i beat RBY)
Why don't you want the Master Ball? I'd use it to catch Mewtwo.

There was glitches trading between yellow and red/blue. I had it happen before as i had then both back in the day. But i had my beastly original bulky Gameboy i was playing my red/blue carts on and the yellow version i only played on my gameboy color and my sister also had a gb color which is the only reason i had access to both red/blue before yellow came out. And during a trade between yellow and the original, i dont remember if i had my two colors connected or if i had the original gameboy and a color trading but the yellow version corrupted my blue versions save file which is the one i had my full pokedex and most hours on. Later i read online (AOL days lol) this was a possibility and not all that uncommon.
Odd, never heard of that one. My best guess is that some issue with the link cable caused a disconnect, and since the game was interrupted when trading save data, it corrupted the whole thing. Sorry to hear that
@Pokemario2401 You should have gone straight for red or blue to save time. You can complete the pokedex with just red and blue, whereas if you play yellow, you still need to playthrough red and blue.
Yeah doing Yellow added time, but it allowed me to utilize all 3 games, plus play the "definitive version" of gen 1
Fly, Dig, Teleport, sometimes escape rope and lots of calcium for the trainer fly glitch, I completed pokemon yellow without trading to another game

The Pokemon games aren't quite for me (though, I do love gen 3 out of nostalgia), but I like watching other people suffer through them. Thank you for letting me live those condensed 47 hours vicariously through you.

I've already thought ahead for that one, It would be way faster and easier to play through HGSS all the way up to Kanto, catch snorlax, trade it over, then breed it

I didn't use them originally in the playthrough, but when I accidentally deleted a large chunk of the playthrough and used rare candies to quickly get the footage back

Actually a plotpoint in Gen2: They DID virtually disband (albeit not instantly, if we go by FRLG, as some are on the Sevii Islands still doing a bit), and then reformed a few years later to find Giovanni again to return.
All it takes is a switch, a copy of let’s go pikachu and a copy of let’s go eevee, and then download pokemon home to the switch to swap over the exclusives.
You'd need 2 switches for trade evolutions, but yeah
The pokedex completion is not a completionist goal and a way to make the game better, it's a cynical marketing technique to get hardcore fans to buy more products (games). The slogan just proves it. Always been a bit scummy to me to have so many version exclusives. Should only be very very small numbers (like the cover legendary). Actually, if they weren't being capitalists, there would only be one game per gen launch and then MAYBE one expanded game with new areas that had the same catch rates for the old areas (except a handful or less exclusives)
It was a novel idea to encourage trading back in the 90s, but it should've been removed a while ago
The hardest to catch are definitely the Safari Zone exclusive ones. Holy arseholes.
