    So, I recently read a biographical manga for Satoshi Tajiri. Apparently the trading was meant to be kind of a cute thing where everyone's unique pokemon would travel and journey across people and sort of be its own identity and story, part of why you can't change the nicknames.

    1:52 i mean yeah. thats exactly how it should work. you have a pokemon that you can investigate and study to complete the dex entry. when you're done it doesn't matter what is happening to the pokemon.

    • @o7_AP
      @o7_AP 2 ปีที่แล้ว +63

      You're gaining and writing down info about a Pokémon when you obtain it, that info wouldn't just magically erase itself when you no longer own that Pokémon/evolution stage. It's already hard enough to fully complete a pokedex, imagine if they required owning every Pokémon at the same time...

    • @Namadu7
      @Namadu7 2 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      I was worried I was the only person thinking this! Thanks to you and o7! I enjoyed the video, but that one part confused me.

    • @excalibur493
      @excalibur493 2 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. The dex counts the number of entries you have, not how many you have at the time. idk how this guy got confused, but I like his determination to have a living dex.

      Was gonna say... this is literally explained in the game. Off of this, theres plenty initiative to trade rare pokemon because you can just trade back. Its gotta catch em all, not keep em all lol

      it doesn’t make sense for “catch them all”

  • @azaria_phd
    @azaria_phd 2 ปีที่แล้ว +296

    I mean, the Pokédex is not "flawed". No one ever says that you need to "have 'em all". You just need to collect their data, which requires owning them at some point. But once you collect the data, it wouldn't make sense for that data to be lost once you get rid of the Pokémon.

    • @michealcox7236
      @michealcox7236 ปีที่แล้ว +56

      Yeah, I was shaking my head through that part. They avoided a poor design decision that this person apparently would have preferred. Nothing's stopping them from keeping a list of all the Pokémon they have and making sure they actually have them all at once. Good luck with evolutions.

      @@michealcox7236 Pokémon Stadium has "Caught" and "Owned". So if I "own" currently a Venusaur, the game knows I already "caught" a Bulbasaur (starter) and Ivysaur (evolved Bulba). It helps with the Living Dex because I used Stadium's boxes as storing when resetting my game.

    One thing you didn't mention, which you probably figured out while doing it, is catching duplicates on your main game, to use as trade fodder. If you're going for a living dex, you don't want to be trading away your pokemon unless doing so would evolve them, and even then you'll want the evolved one back without losing another important part of your system.

    0:30 This isn't actually an issue if you have Pokémon Stadium. If you beat the Gym Leader Castle, it gives you one of the Unique Save File Pokémon: The Starters, the Hitmons, Eevee, the Fossils, etc. So you only need to run a gauntlet once, then keep fighting the Rival in that game rather than restarting one of your save files.

    Personally, I usually just use glitches to obtain the unobtainable Pokemon when playing Gen 1 (See the "Long-Range Trainer" Glitch or the "Mew" Glitch for more details) but this really lays out how much work it would take just to complete the first Pokedex! Now with 8 Gens (Gen 9 coming out later of the time of this comment), If you want a living pokedex, You're gonna have to do a Total of I don't know how many save files but a lot!
    I also think there is a Reddit Subreddit where the Challenge is to complete the Pokedex as much as possible before battling the gym and progressing forward. (I can't remember the name right now)

I might try my hand at a living dex, but with me being a perfectionist, I would go a step further by having each pokemon at level 100 with the best moveset possible. Speaking of, this video isn't JUST to complete the dex. He is doing the living dex challenge. If its just the normal dex sure, we'll go with that. I still doubt you'd be able to find someone who is even still playing the games in your area immediately. Since it's difficult now to do such, why not just play both versions? I mean, the most important unique pokemon (choice only like the fossils, starters, eons and the such) are actually available through Pokemon Stadium, i think this is a very legit way to get the Hitmon you missed, an extra Eevee and etc because after all Stadium is a gen 1 game...
    And i think is easier to win them via the gym leader castle than just resetting your other pokemon game over and over.
    Also, as a matter of fact, having a friend of yours to help you by playing the other one version makes things super easy and much less time consuming... With so many people spending their free time doing new runs of their old pokemon games it shouldn't be so difficult to find someone to help you catching the Vulpix that doesn't appear on your cartridge

    Oh man, my 2015 memories of getting a gen 1 living dex are coming right back.
    I did many if not all the things in this video, however with some… additional effort put in.
    On the 3DS eShop versions of gen 1, they had added support for the ability to transfer into the Pokémon bank, then into Sun/Moon at the time.
    One neat feature is it has a little game boy symbol and a blurb telling you where came from with something along the lines of “Travelled across space and time from the Kanto region”. Great right?
    Except I wanted my gen 1 Pokémon to also stay in my gen 1 games… so I traded them into gen 2, cloned them and put them into the transport box (Box 1) and sent my first batch into the bank.
    My OCD couldn’t handle what the blurb says about a gen 1 Pokémon if you transport it from gen 2…
    “Travelled through space and time from the **JOHTO** region”.

    So the process became;
    Trade gen 1 mon (Main 3DS) into gen 2 (2nd 3DS)
    Close gen 1 on main 3DS, load gen 2
    Catch trade fodder mon (main 3DS)(low lvl Pidgey)
    Trade gen 1 mon (2nd 3DS) to gen 2 (main 3DS)
    Clone gen 1 mon
    Reverse this process but capturing trade fodder in the other game to enable the trades to happen.
    Put mon in transport box, transfer into bank
    Repeat until all mon are done.
    Was this a needlessly complicated, time consuming process just to have a little piece of text say Kanto instead of Johto?
    Yes!
    Do I regret it?
    No (it helped that I was marathoning Game of Thrones at the time).
    How long did it take me just to do all that trading, cloning, trade fodder capturing, more trading AND bank transferring?
    44 hours.
    Hyper fixation is a weird thing sometimes but I got it done.
    I also cloned and transferred all of gen 2 up into the bank but I didn’t have to trade them as they were actually from
    Johto and it made me REEEEEE free when viewing them in Sun/Moon.

    Even if I’m not doing a Living PokéDex run, this website is really useful for keeping all the information of where to capture Pokémon in a convenient website.

    I loved this idea, can you give me a emulator that i can trade Pokémon so i can do this myself, seems like an awesome challenge!

    I'm so glad they've made getting a living dex a hell of a lot easier now. I completed my living dex in Legends Arceus today and I didn't have to use a single online feature. It's relatively easy in fact

    But in gen 1, the only way to get mew is through a glitch or through trading with those special cartridges that had boxes full of mews. is that the case here?

    What would be perfect if you could add a tab called "repel trick catch chance" to your website, where it lists all the rarer pokemon you can catch with the repel trick (e.g. Dugtrio in Diglett's cave, or Dewgong in Seafoam Islands)

    A bit late but one tip I have: Immediately start your "side game" and trade your starter to the "main game", that way you have a stronger team in the main game, get more xp for a pokemon that has to level quite a bit (something that can also be done for others) and can trade it back to have a strong pokemon for the longest side game run that obeys unlike others.

    I like how you pointed out the actual difference between completing the pokedex as just having all the data as opposed to actually having all the pokemon and really giving the true meaning more of "gotta catch em all".

    I'm playing a Gen 1 Living Dex right now, I have a tip for y'all; save up on money from the very beginning and then exchange it for coins in the Game Corner to buy a Dratini. Dragonair evolves at a whopping Level 55. You can catch Dratinis later in the Safari Zone, but you need to get a Dratini ASAP and naturally level it up as you play through the game. Also, there are 13 Rare Candies in Pokémon Red, so grind your Dragonair until Level 43 and then use all the rare candies on it.

    One day, I want to try playing a Randomizer of a Pokemon game, except instead of doing a Nuzlocke like most people do, I try to catch every single Pokemon in the Pokedex. I'm sure it would be theoretically possible.

    • @PokeMario-pk4ot

      I think the pokemon randomizer tool most people use has a "catch em all" setting where it guarantees all pokemon are obtainable in some way

    I haven't checked out the website yet, nor do I know much about html/coding, (though I am learning) so I do not know how feasible implementation would even be, but:
    Theoretically, could you not take into account things like the catch rate of each pokemon, the pokeball type available at each stage, the payout each trainer battle gives, the moveset of every pokemon available at every stage (for status moves and lowering health), to determine the most efficient way to actually *catch* the pokemon as well? I suppose it doesn't necessarily matter once you get into an encounter with the pokemon in question, whether or not you chuck 500 pokeballs or put it to sleep it then chuck an ultra ball, because you've still captured it, but I just think it's odd how much planning was put into efficiently encountering, without doing the same for efficiently catching in the least amount of steps. (Like, actions, not walking.)
    Though, I want to say, I don't mean any of this as a critique or to say that what you already have done isn't in and of itself, extremely cool, this is a really great amount of planning and thought put into this already! I was just thinking of this as a logical puzzle, a "reach goal in minimum steps/time" kind of thought process.

    How come you didn’t add yellow version? It would make it so you only have to reset to get starters at most 2 times?

  • @TheBurningWarrior
    @TheBurningWarrior 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Bruh, don't restart (9 factorial)factorial times. It's not worth it, and the heat death of the universe will stop you pretty early on if you and your game manage to survive that long.

    Wow, I've been kind of working on something like this over the past several years. Mostly as a collective Pokédex that accounts for all Pokémon caught across all games I have, but with location and evolution information included as well. Nice to know there are other data nerds out there too!

    Unless you're strongly opposed to the gen 2 duplication glitch then...
    You could trade your starters or unique pkmn to a gen 2 game, duplicate them and trade them back to your gen 1 game. This way instead of playing through the game 9 times for the starters you can play through 3 times, or 1 time if you're playing pkmn yellow. Eevee can also be duplicated. For fossils and fighting dojo pkmn you can just make a different choice in two different gen 1 games. This is also assuming you're already relying on trading between games to store the pkmn youre collecting in between your proposed 9 play throughs. I also recommend and favor the duplication option if you also care about trying to get pkmn with high IVs. This way you can soft reset until you get a starter/unique pkmn with good stats and duplicate it rather than try your luck multiple times trying to find and obtain the same pkmn with high IV stats.

    • @merlinambrosius7857
      @merlinambrosius7857 ปีที่แล้ว

      Personally I'm storing pkmn in yellow and crystal. Resetting red, blue, gold, and silver as need be, and for fun. Or as an attempt to make the level grinding more fun. In that I'll restart one of the aforementioned games and then trade over low level pkmn that need to be leveled up and play through the newly reset game with them. Plus they then get more experience per battle, making the grind easier.
