I am glad to see that you have listed the "Club". Just because it is extremely "low tech" does not mean it is ineffective against most car thefts. The "Club" is an add-on highly visible protective device that will discourage a number of individuals from trying to steal your car. There is no device nor method that is 100% perfect against a car being stolen if the thief has the means, motive and opportunity to do so. I bought the "Club" in 1996 after witnessing a classmate's car being stolen. So far none of my cars have been stolen since using the "Club". Another, even better, method I saw being used to deter car theft was the removal of the steeling wheel. This method will overcome nearly all attempts by car thieves. What thief is going to carry a steering wheel of the car he wishes to steal?
Who was the put on their steering wheel every time they have to drive their car? That can't be easy to remove especially on these new cars with all those computer technology! My steering wheel moves up and down as I get in and out the car there's no way I would be able to remove the steering wheel every time I would want to get out the car.. This is sad that we have to even have this conversation...
The single best thing auto makers can do is to let owners turn off the hands free operation for the door locks. In other words, you would have to use the buttons on the remote to remotely unlock the vehicle. Some already offer that, but all should have that option. It's not foolproof, someone could intercept the signal if they were nearby when you push the button, but it would still be a big improvement over the hands free system.
I'd NEVER purchase a car that requires the fob button to be pushed to unlock it. I recently rented a vehicle that had that requirement along with an ignition to insert the key. No way! It's a pain having that requirement after not doing that for 10 years. Some newer vehicles have motion detection key fobs so they stop sending signals shortly after they stop moving.
@@joshm3342, I believe it was in 2022 when Toyota started having motion detection key fobs. They stop sending signals a few minutes after movement stops.
Unfortunately in many big cities with high crime rates, when an arrest is made, the court systems will usually treat an auto theft arrest as the equivalent of a shoplifter. Nothing more than probation or a slap on the wrist especially in the case of a juvenile. If restitution is ordered, more than likely the victim whose vehicle was damaged will likely never see a dime from the thief. Absolutely nothing to deter the criminal from going out and stealing again.
Yes, I have a brand-new vehicle. And yes I have and am doing things to preserve my ownership of said vehicle. I live in the 'stolen vehicle centre' just northwest of TO.
There's a reason the Ford SuperDuty gets stolen so often. The owner's of those things leave the diesel models idling rather than shutting them down. I've seen at least four stolen because of it. Owner pulls into lot, gets out leaving it running and goes in store. Different person walks up, climbs in and drives away.
On different Lexus forums, British Lexus RX 4th gen owners report that Lexus shops offer installation of a plate that protects against CANBUS hijacking in the sense of making it more difficult to access the system. Do you know if Lexus in North America also offer this plate installation? If not, could you find out why? Looking at getting a used RX and I’m trying to understand what to expect.
I just spent some time trying to google that, but the only thing I came up with were LOTS of articles from the UK on the accessibility of such blockers. Most came from 2022 and about half of them were about the blockers being on back order. I have not contacted my local Toyota/Lexus dealer on this. Nothing personal but, because I do not own a Lexus, I am not really interested in this. Good luck...
NEVER install an alarm that uses the car fob. ALWAYS use a different fob, this way when they clone your fob and they open the door, Hell breaks out and they will take off.

Crazy how a $30K vehicle turns into a $50K vehicle at the "stealership". They tried this crap at every dealerships I went to when I bought a car last year but I just kept saying no and/or walking out the door. How about Canada getting serious about jailing the vehicle thieves? No more catch-and-release. Get caught with a firearm or knife stealing a vehicle, no bail sit in jail till trial and a mandatory 5-year sentence. I would assume so as well. Luckily my car is one of the least stolen. MX-5’s are just not expensive enough (car or parts), most are manual so thieves don’t seem to even bother to check, and are just uncommon enough to be something that stands out. They are also fairly easy to mod and a lot have annoying things like fuel pump bypass switches in the oddest places.
As long as organized crime operations can keep recruiting disaffected youth under 18 to do their groundwork these government measures will do absolutely nothing to stop the theft problem.
I would strongly recommend getting a Tesla, which are almost impossible to steal, especially if you set a PIN number. The only option for stealing the car would be then to use a forklift !!!
Auto theft is a huge problem since the pandemic, and insurance premiums put new car ownership out of reach for some people. An OBD lock is a great suggestion, but soon all autos in America will have kill switches as per the Infrastructure Bill. However, if you live in New York City, you might be better off renting for out-of-town trips.
Well, of course there's a lot of vehicles that get stolen in Canada because their prime minister is telling residents to make it easier for the thieves and just leave your car keys by your front door! We heard about that here in Florida! I couldn't stop laughing! Makes me appreciate where I live even more! I'll keep my rights to defend myself, others, and property with no charges and also my second amendment rights!
I have a 2000 Camry wish 454k miles on her. Since I've owned the car ( 10/99) There have been fix known serious attempts to steal my car including once from a Valley who was actually carjacked. Down here in Miami I actually have a secret carjacking switch on the car where where if anyone tries to carjack the vehicle by simply activating the switch the fuel pump will shut down in approximately 3 minutes giving me a chance to get to safety. Older Honda and toyotas are are big business for the chop shops down here because the car's last so long and parts can be pretty expensive. I also had Hurricane film put on all glass but the windshield which I'm sure has contributed to the car not getting grabbed is easily.
I did NOT hear the Canadians planning to do the most obvious thing: CHECK WHAT'S BEING LOADED ONTO SHIPS. Hard to feel sorry when such stupidity prevails.
Banning hacking devices is literally impossible since they're easy to make from parts (crooks can just pay others to make them), and they are often necessary for general troubleshooting and IT work... so it's like trying yo ban wrenches... not a good move. And investing in a failed project is just throwing money down the drain. Bail reform and giving the police orders to stop criminals rather than hand out as many tickets as possible on the other hand, those would put a dent in it.
I don’t drive manuals, but it’s not that hard to learn and swipe a car. I can get them into first and shift up to speed. Yes I’m slow on the gear changes but it’s not my car I’m driving.
Be careful not to group all cars (various versions/options) within a timeframe. My Hyundai was one of the included years, but it’s not the version involved (they were going after keyed ones, not push start). Also…some have had engine issues, the engine on my 2016 is also not one of the included issues. Touted mechanic channels on YT have also over generalized and not provided appropriate details. When you generalize, everyone just assumes all versions were involved during that time frame instead of researching things for themselves. I just really hate when people generalize. It does no good for consumers that have the cars and consumers looking to buy the cars. You need to be more specific. There are so many versions of each in each year. Also, any social influencer needs to be jailed when they promote crime. The more time goes on, the more evil people seem to get. I’m always grateful for the handful of good ones still around.
I wish they would go back to chipped keys. I think they are more secure than the damn wireless key fobs that most are using today. I don' have a fob with either of my cars. Crooks can use devices to pick up the frequency when you are using your fob to duplicate it and steal your car later on. How many of these vehicles are stolen because someone was warming their car up in their driveway?
They use a scan device to read the code being sent by the fob/key. They have a hard time doing that if you keep the key in a faraday pouch. If you don't, they pull up to your driveway, pull out a device with an antenna on it, read your code, program it into their phone, and use the phone to open and start your car. You are not exactly correct on the issue of "warranty voiding" Automakers have been trying to DENY repairs to vehicles for DECADES with the claim the aftermarket product is the cause. When in fact it is not the aftermarket product that was installed by a reputable or licensed shop. I've personally proven dealership service departments WRONG many many many times in the past. And ANY reputable shop will prove that what they Installed is not the cause of the vehicle fault. And if it WAS the cause of the vehicle fault they will take care of it. But dealers can NOT just void your warranty. They can try though and they will try

It's very easy if the manufacturer just disable the ecu making cars duds when they get stolen. Because right now cars and car manufacturers are collecting huge data and selling them.
Americans should be blaming their Federal Government for the ease at which cars are stolen in their country. The Australian government made it compulsory for all new and used vehicles to be fitted with immobilisers at a minimum about 30 years ago. Since this law came into place all new cars came factory fitted with a fully integrated alarm/immobiliser and all used cars fitted with at least a high level immobiliser. No matter what system is fitted to a car there are thieves who will steal what they desire by using tow trucks and by other means.
Comprehensive measures by Canadian gov't = throw citizen tax $ to amend/study but don't act to stop the theft and jail or deport the thieves. As police do nothing the crimes escalate.

Ooops, I asked this question before reading this. I always hoped I was safer driving a manual.
I hear that tow trucks don't discriminate.
@@joshm3342 🤣
What's with the Kia's car thieves are stealing in the US; they're willing to go to jail for those crappy cars? Weird.
Is there a measurable difference in theft between hybrid and non-hybrid? The Toyota Highlander , for example, same vehicle different powerplant.
Are manual transmissions less likely to get stolen than automatic ones? I've always assumed so because fewer people know how to drive them.
Dodge parts tend to be cheap and they still get stolen, even their v6 cars
As long as organized crime operations can keep recruiting disaffected youth under 18 to do their groundwork these government measures will do absolutely nothing to stop the theft problem.
I would strongly recommend getting a Tesla, which are almost impossible to steal, especially if you set a PIN number.
The only option for stealing the car would be then to use a forklift !!!
Put a chain around steering column and brake pedal with a bicycle style lock Car can be towed but will work most times
Our security cameras showed they only took 38 seconds to take that off with a battery powered cut off wheel.
Insurance companies taking note....
My dad to this day still uses The Club on his F150 😂
I Use one on my Rav 4. I've owned the same Club since 98
@@mikej238I use the Club on my 2023 Hyundai Venue even though it has the anti theft system.
One of the best anti-theft strategy is to park your car in your garage at all times.
What if you have three cars and just a one-car garage?
@@oleglishchenko4922 park the most valuable/stolen car in the garage and sell the other two cars if need be.

But what if you don’t have a garage?
@@oleglishchenko4922 park your most expensive/desirable/stolen car in the garage.
Just bought a 2024 sonata. Better priced and equipped, but also much cheaper on insurance. Got quotes to compare, 500 $ +- less premium per year...
I just knew it was going to be the charger 🤣
I guess that's why Stellantis discontinued the Charger. And the Challenger. In fact, there is no Dodge anymore.
@@geraldscott4302 the charger is still going to going to exist. They're actually making an all electric charger
@@ceciliacarrillo6923 And they might actually sell two or three of them.
I disable my smart key whenever I exit the car, I park in the garage. When no garage I use a Club.
Apparently, car thieves have poor taste in cars.
Not where my brother lives they only steal cars and trucks worth more than 100 thousand dollars apiece.
Canadians are so polite...or something.
Can you also make a list of 'least' stolen vehicles in Canada?
Tesla
Club 3000 Twin Hooks steering wheel lock = only $70 at your local Canadian Tire store.
I did NOT hear the Canadians planning to do the most obvious thing: CHECK WHAT'S BEING LOADED ONTO SHIPS. Hard to feel sorry when such stupidity prevails.
Any idea on how much to purchase and install this IGLA device in Canada?
$1200+tax
Banning hacking devices is literally impossible since they're easy to make from parts (crooks can just pay others to make them), and they are often necessary for general troubleshooting and IT work... so it's like trying yo ban wrenches... not a good move. And investing in a failed project is just throwing money down the drain. Bail reform and giving the police orders to stop criminals rather than hand out as many tickets as possible on the other hand, those would put a dent in it.
Got my 2021 RAM 1500 Sport stolen in April 2023.
The charger was obvious XD
Should people be arming themselves? I heard of stories of gangs of criminals breaking in to houses to get access to the keys
Why? So they can steal your gun as well?
Sounds like the government's getting a cut imagine what the insurance companies are thinking
Thanks!
Thank you so much!
Even the car dealerships get their cars stolen off the lots, the police are useless, can't put the two and two together to patrol the ports. Smh
Buy yourself a Chrysler Pacifica they wont steal those & before you knock it look at the Cabin/storage space. These are being used more by Taxis.
To save time and money, thieves should just set camp in Alliston Ontario. They can just still the CR-V and Civics as come off the assembly line.
In Syracuse New York Kias and Hyundais are being stolen almost every day.
Yup, I can confirm. As some who lives in that area, there's a couple stories on the news each week about yet another Kia or Hyundai being stolen...
The City allows it. You can’t have this much theft without it being allowed .
@@heythere6983 That's ridiculous.
If auto makers maker more manuals, no one COULD steal them.
No one would buy them either lmao
That’s why I am still driving my Miata for 20 years and it’s still in top shape!
Don't judge the whole world by your standards. Most people in Romania know how to drive manuals.
Generalizing is stupid.
I don’t drive manuals, but it’s not that hard to learn and swipe a car. I can get them into first and shift up to speed. Yes I’m slow on the gear changes but it’s not my car I’m driving.
I thought you were talking about owner manuals and not manual transmissions. Funny, maybe were talking manual windows and door locks.
Typical. The only time when a government is moved to action on an issue is when it happens to one of the government officials themselves. 🙄
Our police chief recommended we make it easier for thieves to steal by leaving car keys at the door.

How do thieves continue stealing cars with chipped key fobs?
They use a scan device to read the code being sent by the fob/key. They have a hard time doing that if you keep the key in a faraday pouch. If you don't, they pull up to your driveway, pull out a device with an antenna on it, read your code, program it into their phone, and use the phone to open and start your car. OBD port lock?
It is the same as a locker lock.. 🔒 but goes over obd connection so the thief can’t connect his computer to your car.
You are not exactly correct on the issue of "warranty voiding"
Automakers have been trying to DENY repairs to vehicles for DECADES with the claim the aftermarket product is the cause.
Don't port officials check each car?
they tried stealing my Q50 this sunday night i dont blame them i have a nice car im not surprised its second on the list i got lucky they failed but i had 2 get my window fixed n keys reprogrammed

I guess the special keys only work for honest people.
It's very easy if the manufacturer just disable the ecu making cars duds when they get stolen. Because right now cars and car manufacturers are collecting huge data and selling them.
Our government is the largest organized crime! 😂😂😂
Then why do it?
Someone tried to steal my 2014 Kia Forte but got foiled by the stick shift.
Comprehensive measures by Canadian gov't = throw citizen tax $ to amend/study but don't act to stop the theft and jail or deport the thieves. As police do nothing the crimes escalate.
Here in Britain Range Rover
Who would steal a Kia vehicle🤣... Only because they have no theft deterrent system...
