In Canada, you get arrested, charged, let out on bail and then get your case dismissed because it took too long to get to trial. That’s for everything from car-theft to more serious crime. If you do get convicted and sentenced to prison, you get let on parole after only a portion of your sentence is served. And we wonder why the criminals come here first…

Coming back to the topic, our Toyota Highlander Hybrid 2023 model got stolen just yesterday and it happened in less than 3 mins in Toronto. Now instead of looking for a car that we love to keep, we are forced to choose a car that’s not on the list. The car theft is just outrageous now.
Buy a steering wheel lock and when you drive your vehicle and a carjackers wants your vehicle don't fight with low life criminals, it's a car your insurance will pay you back for your stolen or carjacked vehicle..........

my Q50 which i bought in the U.S has been stolen and it turned out that it was shipped in South Africa. Thank god for comprehensive coverage i manage to get something else because insurance pays the current value or actual cash value of the vehicle
Agreed Zach ! A Manuel transmission is the best Anti-Theft deterrent from thieves stealing your car especially here in the USA. Nobody here would buy a manual transmission and drive one. Young adults and drivers have no interest in them with the learning curve and time it takes to properly drive one.
Just got new tires on my 2002 Nissan Xterra with the manual transmission. At the tire shop they had a hard time finding an employee that could actually drive my truck into the service bay. Of course, no one would want to steal my OLD rig anyway!😁
You will be surprised how many (Young Gen) can drive a manual nowadays. The best anti theft is a non desirable vehicle, steering wheel lock can help also for those low life car thieves........
@@crow_2k11beatsbydre8 What surprised me was that when a friend had to take her license exam (stale expired license meant she had to chauffeur the examiner around the block) in my car (she doesn't have a running car, needed to rent one), the examiner claimed never to have seen a manual, and from what my friend and I saw the other examinees couldn't even parallel park or reverse into a parking space, even with a back-up camera.
I am not completely surprised of all the vehicles you listed are stolen. My former co-worker has his pickup truck stolen not once but twice! Also some of it had be stolen from the store’s parking lot as well. Good show guys! ☕️☕️

My 2022 Honda CRV was stolen this past March from my driveway 😩 it took them 1 minutes to steal it. I also spent a year watching your videos and researching and then 8 months waiting for the car.
Wanted to get a 2021 RX 350 but because if the high theft here in Toronto we decided to go with the Q5! Insurance cost was also going to be significantly more with the RX!
Good move, Toyota, Lexus, Honda, Acura are well known for sticky fingers (car thieves/carjackers). Mazda and Nissan even Subura are less likely stolen........
Manual civic owner here. Aleays concernd. Can u do a follow up video showing techniques to get a theif to try elsewhere? For example, not sure how an airtag hidden in the car can help. Also telling insurance u have one help in that regard?
They should be catching them at the ports. Kind of hard to smuggle something as big as a car.If they really want to stop it they should put more law enforcement at the ports. And/or change their tactics.
I agree. If cars are smaller than ants, then they are hard or impossible to track but big as cars? Ports should be tightened, especially containers going to suspicious countries.
It just goes to show the level of corruption involved in this car stealing/deportation ring. The people at the port, along with several government officials benefit financially from turning their backs on the cargo shipments involved with stolen vehicles. SMH...we don't stand a chance if the government makes money off of the scheme.
This has been discussed, but with millions of containers passing the borders, it's simply not feasible to open up every container and catch any sizable amount of thefts. The only solution is the consumer to choose cars that aren't on the list. The car companies dont care, they sell another car. The insurance companies dont care, they just raise your premiums. The cops can only do so much and have to focus on drugs. murders, assaults, other victim crimes, property crimes are very low priority.
I have a 21’RX350 fully loaded living in Toronto - it was stolen back in February then it was found in the port of Montreal. Then after months of waiting for repairs - parked the car at a mall and it was attempted to be stolen again via the left headlight. Repairs are $600. Now again someone tried stealing it in a cineplex parking lot - resulting in the same $600 repair fix. Only reason I still have my car is because of the IGLA system that I installed in my car after thorough research. Also I have a friend down the street who had the same car unfortunately she wasn’t able to retrieve her vehicle and another family friend that had 3 Lexus’s on his driveway because it was a family gathering - all 3 were gone!!! These thefts are no joke in Canada - the authorities don’t seem to care enough to change the laws cause it seems to be the same offenders re offending. I spoke with a constable here and he caught the same guy 3 times after charging him for vehicle theft. Lord protect us and stay safe✝️!
@@mohamedalkaboom I was considering it but when my insurance said they’ll give me $50,000 for the vehicle because of the claim of stolen I wasn’t going to let it go that easily when there were listings at the time for $73,000. I drive very little so I had around 21,000 km on the dash at that time so it didn’t make sense when comparing like cars with the package and mileage. Also, when I did my research of IGLA it is virtually impossible to steal the car without a tow truck. Even then - the car is immobilized and won’t drive without a pin-code. It’s just frustrating when I call Lexus corporate and they say this vehicle passes all Canadian laws and regulations therefore the car has no inherent faults - which is nonsense because they encrypted the same can bus lines in the 23’ models. Yet thieves don’t know that and still try to steal the vehicle via that method of the headlight resulting in the same damage. So either way if I upgrade or stay with this car I will be in the same boat. Lexus UK is at least installing metal plates behind the wheel well to make it more difficult for thieves to access the headlight port but Lexus Canada doesn’t seem to care and faults the law here. I understand downgrading will be the move but I have friends who had their accord stolen too and one of the collision centres at Ken Shaw Lexus the manager told me he got an order from Desjardins to repair 10 stolen corollas. Nothing is safe in Canada anymore - just matters what the people want overseas and which vehicle is more easier to steal. He also told me some people have tried tampering with his wife’s 2015 Lexus RX. So like 🤷♂️

Someone I know had one of these cars on this list that was recently stolen right from their driveway in the middle of the night like around 2:30 AM in a suburb of Montreal (West Island). They just happened to get up in the middle of the night and noticed the car was missing. They called the police who said that it would take about 2 hours for them to arrive at their house to complete a report. They had placed 3 Apple AirTags in their vehicle and rather than wait for the police they decided to be pro-acitve and check the location of their car. They noticed that 1 of the AirTags was missing and the other 2 were still active. They traced to a street in about 1/2 hour away from their home. They had their key fob with them and retrieve their "stolen" car. So what's is happening here? The thieves park the car on a random street and wait to see if it is retrieved after 24 hours. if it is then they know that they were not caught where they were going to ship out the car involving the police. If however the car is not retrieved after 24 - 48 hours, they figure it's safe to move the car to their location where the prep the car to have it shipped overseas. Usually these cars end up in either eastern Europe or Africa and because Canadians and Americans tend to take care of their vehicles, these vehicles are in much better shape than say cars from London or Paris that have a lot of scratches and even damage from parking.
Good thing he did the AirTags thing, I think owners should do everything they can to prevent it from being stolen, but also have a second measure to collect it back. Must have been a relief to get it back! I heard from another article is that they hire some young punk to steal the car, and move it to a location temporarily sometimes just a few kms away, rid the car of tracking devices (on your neighbours car they found one, but not both) Then a different person gets it and brings it to ship it overseas. I have heard the Middle East is where they are shipping them as well.
Pointless statistics. The most common cars on the road will be the mostly likely to feature highly in any stats of this type. EG: The Honda Civic used to be stolen and crashed the most in past statistics. Yes.. Because there were so many of them.
My ev is always garaged plus I live in a relatively safe city. However, I'm always armed whenever I go out. Being armed is no guarantee that everything will turn out alright, but at least you may have a fighting chance against a criminal who believes you're defenseless. Gr8 vid as usual. 🇺🇸

People don’t know how to drive them, and mechanics (young ones) don’t know how to repair them. Also, I really just want a car that gets me from A to B; has a radio, heater, air conditioning……no one wants to steal that.
If the reward is always available, they will find a way regardless of what manufactures do. 100% of this falls on the shoulders of our government and police agencies. They must remove the incentive and the issue will fix itself.
Miscreants burglarized several vehicles in my neighborhood a little over a month ago, including my 2023 Subaru Crosstrek Premium, broken drivers side rear door glass, a duffle bg of dirty vacation laundry taked from the back seat and scattered down the street as it was searched. Notably not stolen were a half-dozen relatively rare vintage bait casting rod and reel sets (Abu-Garcia direct drive Ambassadeur 4000D and 5000D on Conolon rods, probably too easy to trace) from the cargo bay. Police who responded indicated that the thieves were looking for money and guns. Some cars had been stolen from the neighborhood that overnight, and responding officers said that the manual transmission in mine was probably a factor in why mine hadn't been.
My 2021 Honda CRV was stolen 2 months ago in NYC at 2am and then dumped in PA the next day. I was able to get it back thankfully but I’m ready to trade it in for anything else at this point.
I recently decided against a new CRV due to other issues like small engine with turbo, CVT, and most stolen catalytic converters. Now I found out they also top the list of most stolen vehicles. I got an RDX and feel like dodged a bullet. We'll see how it goes with this one.
If I am choosing between to vehicles that are very similar like the Subaru Outback Vs the Honda CRV, I would pick the Outback both because of the higher tow rating and it is not on either most stolen list. It is too bad there are not more manual transmissions around to keep these car thefts under control!
MMC, Hey, you two. Thanks for uploading this video. I bought a newer car ('22) with a manual 6-speed transmission partly because of the anti-theft capabilities it has and I just love 'rowing' through the gears. I learned 'stick' by driving my first-ever truck, a '68 Ford F100 with three-on-the-tree. The other deciding factor of the newer car I bought was the engine. Coincidentally, the preferred, for me, port-injection makes the engine horsepower lower than the turbo/direct-injection engine option on this specific car. I am purposefully being vague on the manufacturer. The engine was an important factor. Direct-injection (only) engines have carbon buildup on the tops of the intake valves because there is no 'ported' fuel washing over the valves where it is needed the most. After 30,000 miles, a direct-injected car, from this manufacturer and others like it, need to have the carbon scraped, blasted, or chemically removed from the intake valves. Sure, this smaller displacement engine has more power, but reliability and longevity are reduced. Then you have to pay more for serialized direct injectors over the lower cost port injectors and the additional cost for labor to clean the carbon off of the intake valves. That is way too much to deal with when all a driver/owner needs is an N/A (naturally aspirated) and 'port-injected' engine. Searching for my car on 'cargurus.com' with the manual transmission and the engine option I wanted came up with only 24 cars nationwide (USA). The closest result was a car 700 miles from where I live(d). I was happy to cover that distance and I did. I am happy with the car I bought. On my return trip, from the point of sale, I was getting 42.5 mpg (US) driving at the posted the speed limit or less than the speed limit. This number is, at least, 8-10 mpg more than the manufacturers' results. If you want a specific mfr name, model, and trim I bought, I can email you directly. Hope this helps others.
Hey, I learned to drive on a '51 Studebaker and a '70 Buick Estate Wagon, took my license exam in a '74 Dodge Coronet, all three-on-the-tree examples and have never bought an automatic (though I did inherit an '85 Omni and a '93 Roadmonster), and never will.
Number one, in both countries, does not surprise me. What does surprise me is the Range Rovers. I wonder why… as the are highly visible, rare enough and not really great for parts (bespoke packages/colours (both in/out)). Honda CRVs, by comparison… have a grocery list of interchangeable parts and are relatively common (unnoticed, thousands made over certain years and common colour packages (in/out)). As far as being shipped overseas, I would have imagined Toyota 4Runners and Tacomas or any of the Lexus models. After all, Range Rovers can be quite problematic at times and require a bit more ‘dealer only’ maintenance items. Interesting topic. Thanks for the video.
I once heard from another article that cars are 3x the value overseas. So a Honda CRV fetches $90,000CAD whereas a Range Rover fetch $180,000. not worth the hassle, I'll just buy a Porsche Cayenne! Lol
I think when anyone makes most stolen cars lists, not enough attention is given to talk about if it's most stolen car by absolute value or by percentage value from the total sold (or total on the roads). Changing counting method makes 2 completely different lists and conclusions are totally different as well.

I dont think catalytic converters were mentioned as a reason for many thefts/ vandalism. Here in Chicago and many other cities, cc’s were getting cut right off the cars and sold on the black market for their precious metals. You might still have your car, but it was a hassle to get it replaced. And it seemed that law enforcement couldn’t do much about it. People are getting their cc’s welded in with bars as a deterrent.
Manual transmission ? What the heck is that ?. Everyone is doing away with, I do drive a 2005 Camry SE with manual transmission, and last year bought a 22 Tacoma TRD Sport with manual transmission as well. Both are keyed entries and start. Hoping that manual transmission will be around for the forseable future . Cheers all.
Am I to assume these lists are based on raw numbers and not adjusted for market share? For instance, if a lot of CR-Vs are stolen, but there are so many of them out there (including old ones that just keep running!) that doesn't necessarily tell you it's inherently easier to steal compared to other models. It would be interesting to see theft rates relative to active registration numbers for a given model.
Here in Seattle, Hondas are stolen as well as the Kia that has a key ignition. my coworker got had his Honda stolen many times so he got rid of it. Hopefully they won't steal my 23 Kia Sportage. I'd be upset cuz i had to go thru a lot to get it

Well, can’t say I disagree with the CR-V in Canada being top of the list, as I know two people close to me who each had one stolen in the past year, here in Southern Ontario. Our next door neighbour had their (2019?) stolen a few months ago while at work in Brampton, and a few months before that my wife’s cousin had her brand new (2022?) fully loaded CR-V stolen from the street parked in front of her house in Trenton. Fortunately, the police ended up locating my wife’s cousin’s CR-V about about a week or two later; it was found a few blocks away basically undamaged other than the GPS/telematics wires had been cut and disabled, so the thieves knew what they were doing… so she just had to have those wires fixed. Guess they must have got spooked or something. Best steps to take is park in the garage if/when possible and hide a couple trackers like AirTags in your car… or maybe just buy a manual transmission vehicle. 😂
Be glad you didn't get the EV. Have you seen the videos about IONIQ 5s being written off because the $60000+ (Canadian) cost of repairing the battery skid plate is more than the price of a new car? EVs were a dead end more than a century ago, and the current crop still have insurmountable and undeniable drawbacks that render them not ready for prime time.

How about installing container x-ray machines ? I’ve seen those south of Tucson, checking trucks for human smugglers. It doesn’t have to be on every container, random is ok, just make sure the people doing the checking aren’t on the take from organized crime.
It’s a pretty low risk crime. Punishment if caught is pretty light. In my state, just being in a stolen car may not be enough to prosecute. You have to prove the occupier knew it was stolen. Some extra hoops for investigators to go through. Plus, it’s a property crime not a person crime. Maybe we can electrify the exterior of the car for a zap to intruders….and keep a hungry Doberman in the vehicle…chomp! Thanks to Zack and Andrea for dispensing the info.

The HDLI list is not an absolute list though, it’s more of “thefts per capita” or likelihood of getting stolen. There were only like 150 Hellcats sold last year…
Interesting... I expected to see more Korean cars on the list. My auto insurance broker shopped around for me and found that a number of companies in Seattle market will NOT insure a Korean car. As I understand, its the models that still require an ignition key that are easy to steal. Yet some insurers have decided that if it is made in Korean, they either won't insure it or have jacked up the price.
CR-V 😢. It’s such a shame that we have to protect commuter cars in Canada …. All this seems to benefit the insurance industry as the premiums for Honda cars is super high compared to other makers just coz there’s CRV or a Civic or an Accord in this list (for so many years now) 😤. A friend of mine paid almost $600 a month for insurance premium for a 2024 CRV Thought of suggesting him a Jeep Compass instead 😂
Sounds like your friend has other issues making their insurance high. 2024 crv hybrid ( the most expensive crv) in Alberta (some of the most expensive insurance) and it’s nowhere near that. Around $200 a month with a 2008 Tundra on there as well.
I believe the number one theft deterrent is PARK IN THE GARAGE!! I live in a well to do area with many 3 car garage homes. Gues what? All the cars are on the driveway because the garage is being used a massive storage locker. I'll never get this. Is it laziness, complacency or pure ignorance that living in a well to do area is somehow a safe place for theft not to happen
IF these gangs or organized crime rings take these stolen vehicles to a port to be shipped, why aren't there federal agents or port police stopping the shipments?
The later model vehicles have satellite tracking systems and some have 360 degree cameras. I don't know it that will help stop thieves from picking those vehicles.
Avoid buying the top five most stolen makes in USA/Canada: Acura/Honda, Lexus/Toyota, Jeep/Dodge, Land Rover and Ford. Next, use a steering wheel club lock. And if you can, stick to older vehicles with physical, metal ignition keys - you can still get nice VWs, Nissan, Subarus, GM and others from 2018 or so thus equipped. This will decrease the odds of your car being stolen. Bonus points if you drive a manual transmission. For example, no one in Africa wants your 2017 Mitsubishi Outlander with 2wd and manual shift.
One of the reasons electric cars are stolen less is that they are intrinsically connected vehicles. Stealing an iPhone on wheels that is full-time connected to the Internet & GPS is pretty stupid. Also, Telsa has Sentry Mode. It takes video of activity in proximity of the the car. Lastly, if you had a stolen Tesla and somehow got around the other issues, you could never connect to the Supercharger network without turning yourself in. Stealing electric cars would be mostly for parts and you'd have to be very careful about it - too much trouble...
I remember a list like this (for the US) from about 35 years ago with mostly aspirational vehicles but sitting at pole position was the lowly Hyundai Excel. The logic went that buyers with lower incomes (and perhaps off the grid is a way or two) who still wanted a new car might get this model but were then unable to afford parts at retail prices. So the stolen cars were taken as parts donors for cheap under-the-table sales. Surely the Yugo would have been on the same list if they'd sold more than twelve.
Its my understanding that there has been a big increase in the number of vehicles being stolen from airport parking lots at Pearson airport in Toronto. I assume that's likely the case at all major airports. I have a 'club' steering wheel bar that I always put on my pickup when I park at the airport. Not sure how reliable they are but I figure why would a thief bother with having to remove the club which would take some time and attract attention when they can just take one without it?
Some years ago a friend had a Plymouth minivan stolen from a parking space near a main entrance to his church while he was singing in the choir for Christmas Eve midnight mass. The van was recovered a couple of days later from the scene of a smash-and-grab where it had been used as a battering ram to break into a convenience store. My friend did get his skateboard back, but the rest of his belongings along with the second and third row seats were gone forever. Interestingly, the wreck had two temporary spares on the ground at recovery. Write-off. He uses a club now, and I have both a club and a pedal locking attachment I used for a time.
My RDX was stolen from Pearson this past spring. According to the police tow lots in Toronto they RECOVER a car every 3-4 hours. Imagine how many others are just put into shipping containers and never recovered.
Curious if adding a bunch of gaudy/tacky stickers helps. Because people kept treating my car like it was invisible while I drove (seriously though…how many times people tailgate, come close to backing into me, almost sideswipe me merging into my lane, etc etc) I added red and white DOT reflective stickers all across the back and even a couple on my side doors. Totally destroyed the nice look of the car and possibly the clear coat finish, but I mean…I’ll cross that “repair” bridge when I come to it. I also have several dog related stickers…so they know it’s full of hair and dirt inside…and perhaps even an actual dog depending on when/where it’s parked! I think it also serves as a theft deterrent!That and prayer of course. He hears the prayers of the righteous…and of course that means you aren’t praying over it because you idolize it and love it, but because you do not want evil to come near you/your family. No one should be left stranded or put in harms way. This is such a wicked world. May people be convicted, humbled, and do unto others what they would have done unto themselves!

Learned a lessen on how the insurance companies work years ago. I had this discussion with my insurance about the $100 increase in my policy on my 2003 2dr civic, with my clean record. They said its a high theft in the GTA (Toronto and surrounding areas) that's why the increase. I said i live over a 1hr north from there, then I asked do you think the civic is the most stolen vehicle because its the best selling car (at the time) and maybe theres more of them to steal? Big pause.. and replied with, sorry sir that's the way it is. Lesson learned. My cheap car, age, 30+ yrs clean record, and where I lived didn't matter. I sold that car the next month and changed brokers I was so disappointed I the system. A BIG side note, the bad guys (gangs ect) also run the shipyards.
I'm curious if these cars theft, they target mostly straight gas for the value! I would be surprise if they do steal hybrids cause how would you ship and service when it comes to battery issues!
I’m sure someone else wrote this below but the older Hondas and Toyotas were stolen for parts. So many vehicles that age and need parts, shops buy the hot parts on the cheap.

Some model years of Kia/Hyundai are stolen often as immobilizer were not installed making them easy to steal. So bad that some insurance companies won't insure them.
Having just bought a 2023 Kia Sportage PHEV, I am curious if it is just as theft prone as the older front and all wheel drive Sportage models - hope not!
As for the 2006 GM trucks, it is not that they're easier to steal, it's that they're desirable. It's the last year before the dreaded AFM (active fuel management) came on board. And although they're full of typical GM plastics, the 2007 and newer GM trucks have even cheaper plastics and many more problems. 2006 is the last of the "old school" GM trucks, that's what makes them desirable. If you search further you'll find the 2006 and older Tahoe/Suburban/Yukon/Escalade models are unfortunately high on the theft list as well.
I'm curious with the f150, if there is a big difference in rate between the crew cab, extended cab and regular cab models. I have a 20 regular cab, of course in white and would imagine that it would be low on the theives list, since it's a cheaper model and all about work. On the other hand, a white regular cab is almost invisible, so maybe that's what criminals want for their next heist.
Work at a car dealer in the US. Someone traded in a 2021 Kia Sportage that the ignition was ripped out. (Probably the Kia boys got it lol). They lost over 10 thousand dollars on that car they just wanted it out of their lives. Funniest part is that you can start that car with a screwdriver.
I can see the reason the particular cars that are stolen in Canada are either AWD(all wheel drive) or 4 wheel drive. The criminals have to be able to get away and in the Great White North with all the snow and ice, this four wheel drive capability is a must.
Proactive car buying is an underused strategy. Before you set your heart on a car, get quotes from insurance companies to compare them. Also check out most stolen cars lists and simply avoid them. This is the *only* way around car theft rings. A drop in sales is the only way car manufacturers will do something about making their cars hard to steal. Land Rover is exceeding sales, because if you get your Land Rover stolen, the insurance company will replace it with (wait for it) another Land Rover! So the dealership in essence is selling you two vehicles, thus doubling their sales! I have a 8 year old 2015 CRV, so it's not on the hot list for overseas buyers, and my insurance is low. I'd love a 2024 CRV, but next year it will be on the top 10 most stolen list. I would love to have a fingerprint scan device option where the car wont start without my unique finger print.
Electric vehicles are not stolen for two main reasons. 1. Teslas have sim cards (easy to track - great app/software) and when you plug them into superchargers, they can be tracked 2. Where these stolen cars are sold (South Africa, Middle East and Asia), the electrical infrastructure doesn't exist yet

In Canada, you get arrested, charged, let out on bail and then get your case dismissed because it took too long to get to trial. That’s for everything from car-theft to more serious crime. If you do get convicted and sentenced to prison, you get let on parole after only a portion of your sentence is served. And we wonder why the criminals come here first…

Buy a steering wheel lock and when you drive your vehicle and a carjackers wants your vehicle don't fight with low life criminals, it's a car your insurance will pay you back for your stolen or carjacked vehicle..........

Agreed Zach ! A Manuel transmission is the best Anti-Theft deterrent from thieves stealing your car especially here in the USA. Nobody here would buy a manual transmission and drive one. Young adults and drivers have no interest in them with the learning curve and time it takes to properly drive one.
Just got new tires on my 2002 Nissan Xterra with the manual transmission. At the tire shop they had a hard time finding an employee that could actually drive my truck into the service bay. Of course, no one would want to steal my OLD rig anyway!😁

@@crow_2k11beatsbydre8 What surprised me was that when a friend had to take her license exam (stale expired license meant she had to chauffeur the examiner around the block) in my car (she doesn't have a running car, needed to rent one), the examiner claimed never to have seen a manual, and from what my friend and I saw the other examinees couldn't even parallel park or reverse into a parking space, even with a back-up camera.

They should be catching them at the ports. Kind of hard to smuggle something as big as a car.If they really want to stop it they should put more law enforcement at the ports. And/or change their tactics.
I agree. If cars are smaller than ants, then they are hard or impossible to track but big as cars? Ports should be tightened, especially containers going to suspicious countries.
It just goes to show the level of corruption involved in this car stealing/deportation ring. The people at the port, along with several government officials benefit financially from turning their backs on the cargo shipments involved with stolen vehicles. SMH...we don't stand a chance if the government makes money off of the scheme.

This has been discussed, but with millions of containers passing the borders, it's simply not feasible to open up every container and catch any sizable amount of thefts. The only solution is the consumer to choose cars that aren't on the list. The car companies dont care, they sell another car. The insurance companies dont care, they just raise your premiums. The cops can only do so much and have to focus on drugs. murders, assaults, other victim crimes, property crimes are very low priority.
In New Zealand, it's always the small cheap cars. Kids like using them to race when they aren't using them to crash into liquor stores at 3am.
I have a 21’RX350 fully loaded living in Toronto - it was stolen back in February then it was found in the port of Montreal. Then after months of waiting for repairs - parked the car at a mall and it was attempted to be stolen again via the left headlight. Repairs are $600. Now again someone tried stealing it in a cineplex parking lot - resulting in the same $600 repair fix. Only reason I still have my car is because of the IGLA system that I installed in my car after thorough research. Also I have a friend down the street who had the same car unfortunately she wasn’t able to retrieve her vehicle and another family friend that had 3 Lexus’s on his driveway because it was a family gathering - all 3 were gone!!! These thefts are no joke in Canada - the authorities don’t seem to care enough to change the laws cause it seems to be the same offenders re offending. I spoke with a constable here and he caught the same guy 3 times after charging him for vehicle theft. Lord protect us and stay safe✝️!

@@mohamedalkaboom I was considering it but when my insurance said they’ll give me $50,000 for the vehicle because of the claim of stolen I wasn’t going to let it go that easily when there were listings at the time for $73,000. I drive very little so I had around 21,000 km on the dash at that time so it didn’t make sense when comparing like cars with the package and mileage.
Also, when I did my research of IGLA it is virtually impossible to steal the car without a tow truck. Even then - the car is immobilized and won’t drive without a pin-code. It’s just frustrating when I call Lexus corporate and they say this vehicle passes all Canadian laws and regulations therefore the car has no inherent faults - which is nonsense because they encrypted the same can bus lines in the 23’ models. Yet thieves don’t know that and still try to steal the vehicle via that method of the headlight resulting in the same damage. So either way if I upgrade or stay with this car I will be in the same boat. Lexus UK is at least installing metal plates behind the wheel well to make it more difficult for thieves to access the headlight port but Lexus Canada doesn’t seem to care and faults the law here. I understand downgrading will be the move but I have friends who had their accord stolen too and one of the collision centres at Ken Shaw Lexus the manager told me he got an order from Desjardins to repair 10 stolen corollas. Nothing is safe in Canada anymore - just matters what the people want overseas and which vehicle is more easier to steal. He also told me some people have tried tampering with his wife’s 2015 Lexus RX. So like 🤷♂️

Someone I know had one of these cars on this list that was recently stolen right from their driveway in the middle of the night like around 2:30 AM in a suburb of Montreal (West Island). They just happened to get up in the middle of the night and noticed the car was missing. They called the police who said that it would take about 2 hours for them to arrive at their house to complete a report. They had placed 3 Apple AirTags in their vehicle and rather than wait for the police they decided to be pro-acitve and check the location of their car. They noticed that 1 of the AirTags was missing and the other 2 were still active. They traced to a street in about 1/2 hour away from their home. They had their key fob with them and retrieve their "stolen" car. So what's is happening here? The thieves park the car on a random street and wait to see if it is retrieved after 24 hours. if it is then they know that they were not caught where they were going to ship out the car involving the police. If however the car is not retrieved after 24 - 48 hours, they figure it's safe to move the car to their location where the prep the car to have it shipped overseas. Usually these cars end up in either eastern Europe or Africa and because Canadians and Americans tend to take care of their vehicles, these vehicles are in much better shape than say cars from London or Paris that have a lot of scratches and even damage from parking.
Good thing he did the AirTags thing, I think owners should do everything they can to prevent it from being stolen, but also have a second measure to collect it back. Must have been a relief to get it back!
I heard from another article is that they hire some young punk to steal the car, and move it to a location temporarily sometimes just a few kms away, rid the car of tracking devices (on your neighbours car they found one, but not both) Then a different person gets it and brings it to ship it overseas. I have heard the Middle East is where they are shipping them as well.

My ev is always garaged plus I live in a relatively safe city. However, I'm always armed whenever I go out. Being armed is no guarantee that everything will turn out alright, but at least you may have a fighting chance against a criminal who believes you're defenseless. Gr8 vid as usual. 🇺🇸

People don’t know how to drive them, and mechanics (young ones) don’t know how to repair them. Also, I really just want a car that gets me from A to B; has a radio, heater, air conditioning……no one wants to steal that.

Miscreants burglarized several vehicles in my neighborhood a little over a month ago, including my 2023 Subaru Crosstrek Premium, broken drivers side rear door glass, a duffle bg of dirty vacation laundry taked from the back seat and scattered down the street as it was searched.
Notably not stolen were a half-dozen relatively rare vintage bait casting rod and reel sets (Abu-Garcia direct drive Ambassadeur 4000D and 5000D on Conolon rods, probably too easy to trace) from the cargo bay.
Police who responded indicated that the thieves were looking for money and guns.
Some cars had been stolen from the neighborhood that overnight, and responding officers said that the manual transmission in mine was probably a factor in why mine hadn't been.
My 2021 Honda CRV was stolen 2 months ago in NYC at 2am and then dumped in PA the next day. I was able to get it back thankfully but I’m ready to trade it in for anything else at this point.
I recently decided against a new CRV due to other issues like small engine with turbo, CVT, and most stolen catalytic converters. Now I found out they also top the list of most stolen vehicles. I got an RDX and feel like dodged a bullet. We'll see how it goes with this one.

If I am choosing between to vehicles that are very similar like the Subaru Outback Vs the Honda CRV, I would pick the Outback both because of the higher tow rating and it is not on either most stolen list. It is too bad there are not more manual transmissions around to keep these car thefts under control!

MMC, Hey, you two. Thanks for uploading this video. I bought a newer car ('22) with a manual 6-speed transmission partly because of the anti-theft capabilities it has and I just love 'rowing' through the gears. I learned 'stick' by driving my first-ever truck, a '68 Ford F100 with three-on-the-tree. The other deciding factor of the newer car I bought was the engine. Coincidentally, the preferred, for me, port-injection makes the engine horsepower lower than the turbo/direct-injection engine option on this specific car. I am purposefully being vague on the manufacturer. The engine was an important factor. Direct-injection (only) engines have carbon buildup on the tops of the intake valves because there is no 'ported' fuel washing over the valves where it is needed the most. After 30,000 miles, a direct-injected car, from this manufacturer and others like it, need to have the carbon scraped, blasted, or chemically removed from the intake valves. Sure, this smaller displacement engine has more power, but reliability and longevity are reduced. Then you have to pay more for serialized direct injectors over the lower cost port injectors and the additional cost for labor to clean the carbon off of the intake valves. That is way too much to deal with when all a driver/owner needs is an N/A (naturally aspirated) and 'port-injected' engine. Searching for my car on 'cargurus.com' with the manual transmission and the engine option I wanted came up with only 24 cars nationwide (USA). The closest result was a car 700 miles from where I live(d). I was happy to cover that distance and I did. I am happy with the car I bought. On my return trip, from the point of sale, I was getting 42.5 mpg (US) driving at the posted the speed limit or less than the speed limit. This number is, at least, 8-10 mpg more than the manufacturers' results.

Hey, I learned to drive on a '51 Studebaker and a '70 Buick Estate Wagon, took my license exam in a '74 Dodge Coronet, all three-on-the-tree examples and have never bought an automatic (though I did inherit an '85 Omni and a '93 Roadmonster), and never will.
Number one, in both countries, does not surprise me. What does surprise me is the Range Rovers. I wonder why… as the are highly visible, rare enough and not really great for parts (bespoke packages/colours (both in/out)). Honda CRVs, by comparison… have a grocery list of interchangeable parts and are relatively common (unnoticed, thousands made over certain years and common colour packages (in/out)). As far as being shipped overseas, I would have imagined Toyota 4Runners and Tacomas or any of the Lexus models. After all, Range Rovers can be quite problematic at times and require a bit more ‘dealer only’ maintenance items. Interesting topic. Thanks for the video.
I once heard from another article that cars are 3x the value overseas. So a Honda CRV fetches $90,000CAD whereas a Range Rover fetch $180,000.

I think when anyone makes most stolen cars lists, not enough attention is given to talk about if it's most stolen car by absolute value or by percentage value from the total sold (or total on the roads). Changing counting method makes 2 completely different lists and conclusions are totally different as well.

I dont think catalytic converters were mentioned as a reason for many thefts/ vandalism. Here in Chicago and many other cities, cc’s were getting cut right off the cars and sold on the black market for their precious metals. You might still have your car, but it was a hassle to get it replaced. And it seemed that law enforcement couldn’t do much about it. People are getting their cc’s welded in with bars as a deterrent.
Toyota Prius is a big target for their cc’s having a lot of precious metals.
Manual transmission ? What the heck is that ?. Everyone is doing away with, I do drive a 2005 Camry SE with manual transmission, and last year bought a 22 Tacoma TRD Sport with manual transmission as well. Both are keyed entries and start. Hoping that manual transmission will be around for the forseable future . Cheers all.
Am I to assume these lists are based on raw numbers and not adjusted for market share?
For instance, if a lot of CR-Vs are stolen, but there are so many of them out there (including old ones that just keep running!) that doesn't necessarily tell you it's inherently easier to steal compared to other models.
It would be interesting to see theft rates relative to active registration numbers for a given model.

Well, can’t say I disagree with the CR-V in Canada being top of the list, as I know two people close to me who each had one stolen in the past year, here in Southern Ontario. Our next door neighbour had their (2019?) stolen a few months ago while at work in Brampton, and a few months before that my wife’s cousin had her brand new (2022?) fully loaded CR-V stolen from the street parked in front of her house in Trenton. Fortunately, the police ended up locating my wife’s cousin’s CR-V about about a week or two later; it was found a few blocks away basically undamaged other than the GPS/telematics wires had been cut and disabled, so the thieves knew what they were doing… so she just had to have those wires fixed. Guess they must have got spooked or something.
Best steps to take is park in the garage if/when possible and hide a couple trackers like AirTags in your car… or maybe just buy a manual transmission vehicle. 😂

How about installing container x-ray machines ? I’ve seen those south of Tucson, checking trucks for human smugglers. It doesn’t have to be on every container, random is ok, just make sure the people doing the checking aren’t on the take from organized crime.

It’s a pretty low risk crime. Punishment if caught is pretty light. In my state, just being in a stolen car may not be enough to prosecute. You have to prove the occupier knew it was stolen. Some extra hoops for investigators to go through. Plus, it’s a property crime not a person crime. Maybe we can electrify the exterior of the car for a zap to intruders….and keep a hungry Doberman in the vehicle…chomp! Thanks to Zack and Andrea for dispensing the info.

The HDLI list is not an absolute list though, it’s more of “thefts per capita” or likelihood of getting stolen. There were only like 150 Hellcats sold last year…

Interesting... I expected to see more Korean cars on the list. My auto insurance broker shopped around for me and found that a number of companies in Seattle market will NOT insure a Korean car. As I understand, its the models that still require an ignition key that are easy to steal. Yet some insurers have decided that if it is made in Korean, they either won't insure it or have jacked up the price.
In Columbus, Ohio it is almost impossible to get auto insurance on a Korean made car.
CR-V 😢. It’s such a shame that we have to protect commuter cars in Canada …. All this seems to benefit the insurance industry as the premiums for Honda cars is super high compared to other makers just coz there’s CRV or a Civic or an Accord in this list (for so many years now) 😤.

Sounds like your friend has other issues making their insurance high. 2024 crv hybrid ( the most expensive crv) in Alberta (some of the most expensive insurance) and it’s nowhere near that. Around $200 a month with a 2008 Tundra on there as well.

I believe the number one theft deterrent is PARK IN THE GARAGE!! I live in a well to do area with many 3 car garage homes. Gues what? All the cars are on the driveway because the garage is being used a massive storage locker. I'll never get this. Is it laziness, complacency or pure ignorance that living in a well to do area is somehow a safe place for theft not to happen

The later model vehicles have satellite tracking systems and some have 360 degree cameras. I don't know it that will help stop thieves from picking those vehicles.
Avoid buying the top five most stolen makes in USA/Canada: Acura/Honda, Lexus/Toyota, Jeep/Dodge, Land Rover and Ford. Next, use a steering wheel club lock. And if you can, stick to older vehicles with physical, metal ignition keys - you can still get nice VWs, Nissan, Subarus, GM and others from 2018 or so thus equipped. This will decrease the odds of your car being stolen. Bonus points if you drive a manual transmission. For example, no one in Africa wants your 2017 Mitsubishi Outlander with 2wd and manual shift.
Are the numbers normalized by total sales? If CRV and Civic are most sold there are just more of them to get stolen

One of the reasons electric cars are stolen less is that they are intrinsically connected vehicles. Stealing an iPhone on wheels that is full-time connected to the Internet & GPS is pretty stupid. Also, Telsa has Sentry Mode. It takes video of activity in proximity of the the car. Lastly, if you had a stolen Tesla and somehow got around the other issues, you could never connect to the Supercharger network without turning yourself in. Stealing electric cars would be mostly for parts and you'd have to be very careful about it - too much trouble...

I remember a list like this (for the US) from about 35 years ago with mostly aspirational vehicles but sitting at pole position was the lowly Hyundai Excel. The logic went that buyers with lower incomes (and perhaps off the grid is a way or two) who still wanted a new car might get this model but were then unable to afford parts at retail prices. So the stolen cars were taken as parts donors for cheap under-the-table sales. Surely the Yugo would have been on the same list if they'd sold more than twelve.

Its my understanding that there has been a big increase in the number of vehicles being stolen from airport parking lots at Pearson airport in Toronto. I assume that's likely the case at all major airports. I have a 'club' steering wheel bar that I always put on my pickup when I park at the airport. Not sure how reliable they are but I figure why would a thief bother with having to remove the club which would take some time and attract attention when they can just take one without it?
Some years ago a friend had a Plymouth minivan stolen from a parking space near a main entrance to his church while he was singing in the choir for Christmas Eve midnight mass.
The van was recovered a couple of days later from the scene of a smash-and-grab where it had been used as a battering ram to break into a convenience store.
My friend did get his skateboard back, but the rest of his belongings along with the second and third row seats were gone forever. Interestingly, the wreck had two temporary spares on the ground at recovery.

He uses a club now, and I have both a club and a pedal locking attachment I used for a time.
My RDX was stolen from Pearson this past spring. According to the police tow lots in Toronto they RECOVER a car every 3-4 hours. Imagine how many others are just put into shipping containers and never recovered.
Curious if adding a bunch of gaudy/tacky stickers helps. Because people kept treating my car like it was invisible while I drove (seriously though…how many times people tailgate, come close to backing into me, almost sideswipe me merging into my lane, etc etc) I added red and white DOT reflective stickers all across the back and even a couple on my side doors. Totally destroyed the nice look of the car and possibly the clear coat finish, but I mean…I’ll cross that “repair” bridge when I come to it. I also have several dog related stickers…so they know it’s full of hair and dirt inside…and perhaps even an actual dog depending on when/where it’s parked! I think it also serves as a theft deterrent!That and prayer of course. He hears the prayers of the righteous…and of course that means you aren’t praying over it because you idolize it and love it, but because you do not want evil to come near you/your family. No one should be left stranded or put in harms way. This is such a wicked world. May people be convicted, humbled, and do unto others what they would have done unto themselves!
Actually, I'm nervous about buying a Sportage now. My friends tell me that insurance companies are refusing to cover them. Do I go for a Venza instead? (Rural Oregon)

Learned a lessen on how the insurance companies work years ago. I had this discussion with my insurance about the $100 increase in my policy on my 2003 2dr civic, with my clean record. They said its a high theft in the GTA (Toronto and surrounding areas) that's why the increase. I said i live over a 1hr north from there, then I asked do you think the civic is the most stolen vehicle because its the best selling car (at the time) and maybe theres more of them to steal? Big pause.. and replied with, sorry sir that's the way it is. Lesson learned. My cheap car, age, 30+ yrs clean record, and where I lived didn't matter. I sold that car the next month and changed brokers I was so disappointed I the system. A BIG side note, the bad guys (gangs ect) also run the shipyards.
Primary reason I didnt buy CRV here in Toronto. Went with CX5 instead.

I'm curious if these cars theft, they target mostly straight gas for the value! I would be surprise if they do steal hybrids cause how would you ship and service when it comes to battery issues!
I'm surprised in neither the USA or Canada that the Toyota Camry or even the Honda Accord is not on that list.
I’m sure someone else wrote this below but the older Hondas and Toyotas were stolen for parts. So many vehicles that age and need parts, shops buy the hot parts on the cheap.
Out on the prairies, or at least in Alberta, it's the Ford F150 being stolen, so many sold to the oil rig guys. Interesting about the Wrangler being #10 in Canada, I'm looking for one, I think i'll buy a stick version.
Some model years of Kia/Hyundai are stolen often as immobilizer were not installed making them easy to steal. So bad that some insurance companies won't insure them.
Having just bought a 2023 Kia Sportage PHEV, I am curious if it is just as theft prone as the older front and all wheel drive Sportage models - hope not!

As for the 2006 GM trucks, it is not that they're easier to steal, it's that they're desirable. It's the last year before the dreaded AFM (active fuel management) came on board. And although they're full of typical GM plastics, the 2007 and newer GM trucks have even cheaper plastics and many more problems. 2006 is the last of the "old school" GM trucks, that's what makes them desirable. If you search further you'll find the 2006 and older Tahoe/Suburban/Yukon/Escalade models are unfortunately high on the theft list as well.

I'm curious with the f150, if there is a big difference in rate between the crew cab, extended cab and regular cab models. I have a 20 regular cab, of course in white and would imagine that it would be low on the theives list, since it's a cheaper model and all about work. On the other hand, a white regular cab is almost invisible, so maybe that's what criminals want for their next heist.
Work at a car dealer in the US. Someone traded in a 2021 Kia Sportage that the ignition was ripped out. (Probably the Kia boys got it lol). They lost over 10 thousand dollars on that car they just wanted it out of their lives. Funniest part is that you can start that car with a screwdriver.

I can see the reason the particular cars that are stolen in Canada are either AWD(all wheel drive) or 4 wheel drive. The criminals have to be able to get away and in the Great White North with all the snow and ice, this four wheel drive capability is a must.

Proactive car buying is an underused strategy. Before you set your heart on a car, get quotes from insurance companies to compare them. Also check out most stolen cars lists and simply avoid them. This is the *only* way around car theft rings. A drop in sales is the only way car manufacturers will do something about making their cars hard to steal.
Land Rover is exceeding sales, because if you get your Land Rover stolen, the insurance company will replace it with (wait for it) another Land Rover! So the dealership in essence is selling you two vehicles, thus doubling their sales! I have a 8 year old 2015 CRV, so it's not on the hot list for overseas buyers, and my insurance is low. I'd love a 2024 CRV, but next year it will be on the top 10 most stolen list.
I would love to have a fingerprint scan device option where the car wont start without my unique finger print.
Electric vehicles are not stolen for two main reasons.
1. Teslas have sim cards (easy to track - great app/software) and when you plug them into superchargers, they can be tracked
2. Where these stolen cars are sold (South Africa, Middle East and Asia), the electrical infrastructure doesn't exist yet
Organized crime on this scale cannot take place without the involvement of officials. Most times it amazes me greatly how I moved from an average lifestyle to earning over $63k per month, Utter shock is the word. I have understood a lot in the past few years that there are lots of opportunities in the financial market. The only thing is to know where to invest.

@@Florencecoxx That won't bother you if you trade with a professional like *Mr Gary Mason Brooks* my financial adviser. I found him on a CNBC interview where he was featured and reached out to him afterwards. He has since provide entry and exit points on the securities I focus on. I basically follow his trade pattern and haven’t regretted doing so.
