Basic Full House Glider setup

  • How to set up and program a simple foamy full house glider in OpenTX. (Additional: Elevator needs to be retrimmed or offset after adding the ele/flap mix, or leave the "X less than zero" line in the mix) "Full House" means the glider has ailerons, flaps, elevator and rudder all on separate channels which can be programmed and mixed in many ways For example - normal ailerons, camber on a 3 position switch, crow braking on the left slider, elevator compensation to prevent pitch up when braking.
    This setup is kept simple by not including reflex and full span ailerons, where the flaps would have to move upwards.
    I'll talk about INPUTS screen, differential and curves in a future video.

    Andrew! I’ve always been intimidated to program my Taranis , I usually used it primarily for quads because I needed just one model. I set up my ASW28 last night using your video- thank you so much for this video, I can’t wait to fly it again. I did most the mods to this glider as well, ie: removing the wood tray and wheel. Thanks again- you made programming seem easy!

    This is a great video, and I have seen lots of them! I am working on a Phoenix 2000 setup and this is my first setup with a S8S and a "new to me" Taranis X9D+. Already updated OpenTx on the radio and the firmware for both the transmitter and receiver to ACCST 2.1.0. Lots of things to learn at one time, but I am really enjoying your stuff. Great job at explaining complex things in an interactive way. Thanks...

    Thank you Andrew, this video really helped! I recently bought an X-lite and your info really crystallised the Opentx programming approach for me. Where others videos offered 20mins of a 'programmer's' view point, yours gives a simple, no nonsense user's guide. The 3 mins in the middle gave me pretty much all I needed to grasp the concept, especially useful that it's all via the tx rather than through a PC. I want to be able to tweak stuff at the field without lugging around a laptop! Thanks again!

    Great tutorial for glider set-up Andrew.I just have one suggestion for setting up the ailerons; try differential ailerons. This means letting the ailerons go up more than it goes down, this helps reducing the adverse yaw effect (needing less rudder) and makes for faster and more efficient rolling/turning action.Keep on putting out those videos, they are a great help to a lot of people.With king regards,MeijerKTM

    I'm shopping a new TX right now because I want to build a balsa, full house, 6-servo wing F5J model (Höllein Inside F5J). My DX6 isn't up to the task. I've been considering a DX9 or iX12. A lot of people seem to like the Taranis with OpenTX though. Even a lot of DLG guys. I haven't really been sold on it so far, but this tutorial makes it look pretty easy. I picked up on the logic of how the programming works after watching you set a couple mixes!
    I like how sort of direct and bare-bones it is. I don't have to go into a camber presets menu to set up flight modes then camber *system* menu to set my flap mixing, then my mixing menu to set rudder presets and compensation, etc. It just has the logic of what control does what and what it's actuated by under each channel. Very straightforward and very much like writing lines of code. The one downside I see is that you it appears that you can't label what each line of logic is for. It would be easier to keep straight if you could call a mix under a channel 'camber' or 'crow' etc.
    Keep it up! Watching your TopSky build video ages ago kind of got me more into sailplanes. At the time I thought, "wow, that's a lot of crazy work for an airplane!" but you seemed like a regular guy doing it with good common sense and attention so it was still very encouraging. Now I'm flying DLG and building balsa models!
    Cheers,
    Brendan

    Andrew, great tutorial. I am pumped to try this set up on my glider too. One question, in the video you mentioned that you set up your glider to have three flight modes: full ailerons, crow braking and camber, but in the set up I only saw you mixing for crow and camber. Did I miss the mixing for full ailerons? Also, do you find camber to be more effective than just dropping down the flaps a little? Thanks for sharing. Cheers.

    Andrew, I really love your content ( including the diving clips) and have watched ALL of them for years.. I can't get the Ail to CROW movement correct (with flaps going down the Rt Ail for example always deflects down with it at > 50% (not UP a bit as it should instead) Instead they typically both travel down together.. Yet with NO FLAPS applied, the ailerons both deflect properly. I think its possibly because to get proper Ail deflection I had to Invert both Rt and Left Ail in the OUTPUTS stage initially .. but now that I did that . regardless POS of NEGATIVE value set around 70 under the Curves Function and regardless of if I set the Curve Function to "V < 0" or "X > 0" and even with the Subtrim tweaked from +100 thru -100 or more.. i cant get the Ailerons to deflect in the correct direction UP. At the 50% FLAPS point at time 7:45 is where it' fails. While the the Flaps are travelling down properly, at the 50% point the Ail starts to go Down then not UP.. I'm using the S1 Pot since I have a Q-7XS with no LS Slider. I'm doing this setup on a RC-Motion Shrike.. but will try again on my Phoenix V2 2400 tomorrow..any tips on how to resolve this issue I'm having at Frame 7 minutes and 45seconds into the video would be most appreciated.. Your tips and tricks have always worked VERY well till now.. Thanks in advance..

      Hi Jim. Probably need to back up and start again. Get the ailerons working and the flaps working. The ailerons can't be on a Y lead. Just add the 70 S1 X>0 line to each aileron then change 70 to -70 if needed. That should be all you need to do.

To get the proper Al direction I had to invert RAil and L Ail .. and independently BEFORE adding the flap mix they are deflecting normally. I've already tried either + or - 70 but will repeat.. More later.. Thanks Again!

      YEAH! Lets celebrate !it's working really well now.. this is the 1st plane I ever got a CROW mix working on..! I did start from scratch and did everything the same as earlier, and it was behaving the same way ( with the Rt Ail going down not up) till I deleted the LS ( in my case S0) mix I had copied and then went back and copied the other LS line in this case correct Chan 6's S0 line from the OTHER / Correct Flap Channel, and then finally had to invert Lft Ail CHAN 2 to -70 instead of Plus 70 .. Now it works and the Ele Compensation works at -18 for me too! Thanks so much !

      In addition I really like your paint scheme especially for the bottom of the wing where one wing panel is solid black the others are striped it’s so easy to see, I’m a big fan of yours even though I’m across the pond quite a distance lol
      I love to build things I flew RC planes off the cliffs here at the beach in Southern California in the United States about 38 years ago and I just got into it again about eight months ago and I’m loving it
      Your videos are very informative and you taking time to come back to the people who watch your videos it makes an awesome little community I greatly appreciate everything you do!
      Daniel

    Hi, It appears you have film on the leading edges and some controls surfaces, what's the background to this and do you have a video about it? Thanks.

    • @AndrewNewton
      @AndrewNewton  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Correct. It's 60 micron clear packing tape. For protection on the leading edge, and to strengthen the control surfaces and foam hinges.

      Thanks for the info Andrew, I've been flying for a couple of months, started with a Bixler and have ordered a Phoenix Evo. Based on my Bixler experience the Evo needs to be as sturdy as possible. ;)

    • @AndrewNewton
      @AndrewNewton  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Excellent David, my 2 favourite planes. Hope you understand that the Evolution is a thermal glider, and not designed for flying around on power all the time. The motor just gets you up there to start gliding.

    • @23checkers

      Copy that Andrew, thermalling should work for me, it's when I hang around close to the ground that things go wrong.

    Andrew I'm a big fan of using Wireless Training with my friends and grandsons.. If I set that up ( normally I do it thru the INPUTs page under SH toggle and some switching logic..) and use the TR Inputs at 100% can the student fly the plane normally without flaps or crow at 100% via the Training Mode : MASTER:SBUS option without any crow or Elev compensation.. and if that works can I replicate this Full House setup in the Student Radio and expect it will behave the same with Crow and flaps in the same way the Master is now? I have identical Q-7XS RAdios I'm going to try this.

    • @AndrewNewton
      @AndrewNewton  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You will have to educate me when you try it Jim. I have never tried buddy box setup other than the most basic 100% TR signals.

    • @jimsnodgrass8454
      @jimsnodgrass8454 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Andrew Newton ... well sure.. I did try it and simply added the TR1 to TR4 channels into the mixer stage adding each above the main control CH Enabled by the L03 trainer On Switch and while selecting one of 3 rates it worked fine on the 4 basic input control channels. .. but to add the full house control with flap and Ele compensation it’s clear to me now that I’ll also need to replicate the entire master model Mixer stage setup and copy all 7 over into the student radio so when he has control, it can provide the student the identical crow functionality. My grandson (he’s 10 ) is constantly pleading with me to let him land it .. so I’ll need to add this full mix into the student radio too. I’ll do it under a special “StuFullHouse” model , so I can switch back to the normal 4ch 100% Rate when needed. Thank you Andrew for this video on all the basics needed for a 7servo Ch glider with crow . I plan to use it as a template for several others like my Volantex 2400 Phoenix v2 and ASW-28 next

    Andrey what film thickness did you laminate the plane?

    • @AndrewNewton

    Hi Andrew, just a quick word. I think the Phoenix looks like its been laminated, if that's correct is there any structural benefits from doing this please

    • @AndrewNewton
      @AndrewNewton  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just packing tape near the leading edge to stop dings. Laminating does stiffen the wings, but not usually necessary

    Andrew can you help point me in right direction please? I am looking to buy a Introduction 6servo wing glider. I am trying to spec ESC and am struggling to understand how to balance right ESC for both motor and number of servos. I can get a higher amperage ESC Sbec servo eg sunrise 45A but am still unsure if this will a) effect motor performance and b) be enough amperage for 8 total servos (spec is 6A bec max). Can you advise or help please? Thanks Pete. PS I am using Taranis 2019+ and expect to use sbus connections. Thanks in advance.

    • @AndrewNewton

      Separate BEC would be recommended for that many servos, but I have never done it myself.
