Spending time outdoors doing projects with various machines and tools - anything from cutting trees, firewood, clearing brush, milling wood, plowing snow, reviewing, repairing & fabricating equipment. Doing landscaping and maintenance on my forested property using my Kubota tractor.
And its not all work!! Gotta take time to play - after turning my pond into a skating rink, and a whole bunch more of outdoor activities.

There's a lot more to it than that you have to be at the right height on the other hand because it's dropping an inch and a half

That is all there is to do on the bottom. You just need to go to the top and mark it. Since the board is sitting on both the lower and upper beams at the same time there is no drop. Here is the link for the top: th-cam.com/users/shortspRlzk0hAS7I

He's not correct....the angles will be off on both ends you must step off....

You need to go to the top and mark it. There is no reason for the angles to be off unless you cut them crooked. Here is the link for the top: th-cam.com/users/shortspRlzk0hAS7I

An experienced carpenter would do this cut on the ground and only lift the board up once and nail it down.

I have few wood working skills but found this to be a very useful and easily understood tip.

Thanks, I posted a short video on how to do the top end as well. Have a great day!

Wrong! Firstly you must have a ridge cut regarding desired angle/pitch. Then if you want to apply this method, you have to temporarily connect it to the ridge with an offset by the same thickness of the wood block you are using here, then you can mark and cut, it would fit perfectly. If you don’t do, unless you cut the ridge side exactly same way (not a good idea, it will make the rafter weak and the wood will crack from there under force), you will end up with different incline and have gaps at both sides. Those gaps can be dramatic regarding how deep you cut the birds mouth, because you simply decreasing the inclination angle with that cut.

The way I have done it is correct in relation to the way the top is done. Here is the link for the top. th-cam.com/users/shortspRlzk0hAS7I Have a great day!

A real carpenter would have cut that on the ground and handed it up to you. But yeah, ok for unskilled and approximate work.

But the board rotates as you move that end downward, after cutting out the birds mouth, right? So do you need to compensate by propping the other end up by a 2-by when doing the scribing?

Just what I was thinking. Hopefully we get an answer.

His method works fine for longer beams and less so for shorter beams.

Hi there, hope this helps. You place the rafter board across the bottom and top beams. Then either have someone hold the board or clamp it in place. Next, scribe the lines on the bottom and top. Then remove board and do the cuts. The board then can be used as a template for the other rafters. Note that you need to predetermine how much overhang you want at the bottom and whether you plan on putting eavestroughs. Also, at the top ensure that your board extends out far enough to make the top angle cut. Here is a link to the full video, around the 3 minute mark I talk about the rafters and do the cuts. It details it a little better than the short videos. th-cam.com/video/aAvgXJ7XpQI/w-d-xo.htmlsi=x0EzYxgTgaR7uh1n
