153 - Sharpen a chainsaw, tune a chainsaw, repair a chainsaw - Chainsaw Workstation
In this video I show how I have set myself up with a functional chainsaw sharpening, cleaning, tuning and repair workstation. I regularly use my Stihl, Echo and Husqvarna chainsaws so I need a variety of tools and an efficient workspace to maintain them in good operating condition. Can't beat a great set-up to sharpen a chainsaw, tune a chainsaw, clean a chainsaw.

Spending time outdoors doing projects with various machines and tools - anything from cutting trees, firewood, clearing brush, milling wood, plowing snow, reviewing, repairing & fabricating equipment. Doing landscaping and maintenance on my forested property using my Kubota tractor.
And its not all work!! Gotta take time to play - after turning my pond into a skating rink, and a whole bunch more of outdoor activities.

There are 12vdc hot water tank elements available for RV's. You could drop on in your water tank and run it off your ATV battery. I dont think you would get hot water, but certainly would get it warmer for you.

The log peeler is pretty aggressive and is fairly heavy to hold thus it takes a bit of getting use to and it does take some effort to hold on to it. I can't get a bar any shorter than 16" for the saw that I am using the log peeler on. I think a 12" bar would work much better. I haven't used a spud before so I can't really compare them. I do use a draw knife a fair bit and I enjoy using it, but the loge peeler is way more fun. Take care!

Great video Paul! I just bought a Kubota B3030 and will be using it for the heavy snow as well. I’ve been plowing with an ATV for over 20 years. If you raise your winch at the bank you can ramp snow and push quite a bit of snow up and over the ramp, continually building it up. Even easier if you have a hill to push it over and build one. Thanks again for your take on tractor vs atv!

    • @JelenOutDoors

In my opinion the tractor is far better for frozen snow. It has the weight and power to break break through it. And in addition, the front bucket on the tractor is supreme to loosen up harden snow. The ATV is just too light and the tire just spin. Thanks for watching and have a great day!

Why wouldn't you have cut 1 1/4" off the top and bottom, giving you two usable boards? The extra 1/4" is taken care of by the saw kerf. By cutting one board off the top and bottom, you keep the pith close to the center of the cant. That's the way I would have proceeded with this situation. Just an idea mate.

    • @JelenOutDoors
      @JelenOutDoors หลายเดือนก่อน

Excellent question. Yes, as you indicate cutting a 1 1/4" board off the top and bottom to keep the pith center is what I should have done. I got distracted during filming. I should have mentioned it, but I didn't realize it at the time.

Why did you park the trailer so close to where you stack the logs on the ground. If you had parked it further away you could have simply backed up and turned left into the log pile...no need for all the pulling forward and backing up and turning/

    • @JelenOutDoors

You are absolutely right. I did park the trailer to close to the stack on the ground. I realized it pulling the 1st log off the trailer. I was thinking of re-attaching the trailer and moving it, but I decided to just work with it the way it was. Thanks for watching and have a super day!

I sell STIHL through my work (Tractor Dealership). I currently own an ECHO CS-490 (4yrs) and an old Husqvarna 55 I just fixed up. I despise STIHL. Their designs are so unnecessary, and German, it hurts. There are so many more things to go wrong with a STIHL. Their designs are like their cars, cheap and complex. Yes, it's a chainsaw, so nothing is rocket science. However, there is a lot of "because we can" with German chainsaws, just like their cars. Simple, reliable, and easy to work on in the bush is best. That's why I own and use what I do to heat my home in the long harsh winters where I live. Here, we get to -40 Celsius every year. STIHL's smaller saws are made in China, and the midsized saws are assembled in the US with Chinese parts. The largest saws require a laptop to tune because they have EFI. STIHL's chain brakes have a bunch of unnecessary linkage, the clutch drum needle bearings are in a plastic cage, and the magneto and carb are all tied together through one switch. Too much plastic junk all over the carb and blocking easy access to the spark plug under the cover, etc. The ECHO runs a Walboro carb, NGK plug, and even a higher quality walboro fuel filter. The access and maintenance is really easy. There's a thumb screw access to access the winter/summer panel, spark plug, air filter (rewashable), and carb. It's a complete breeze. When compared to ECHO or older Husqvarna, I'd avoid the STIHL every time. Bottom line, they are a pain in the arse more often than not.

You may want to consider spacing a two hook system about 12" - 16" apart from each other from Centre point, as too far apart the tendency to bend your loader arm increases if even pull or weight is not distributed properly and yes bolt system is proven to be stronger than any weld if spacing is correct on bolts. combination of both weld and bolts again superior.

I don't really mean to become "that guy" but your drilling technique is opposite of what is seen, slow speed and good pressure is what you want, lubricant liquid would be a big help, you would be through that hole in seconds. from A/C industry and believe me I have had my share of drilling holes in all sorts of metals.

Might be a good idea to take the bark off the whole log before you put it on the mill. The bark will usually come off with a pressure washer.

It seems the link for your horn is no longer active. Would you be able to find another horn and wiring system that would suffice? I guess I could look myself I'm just worried about the size of the switch and length of wiring for example

One thing not to be an ass, but just for safety reasons please don’t throw your saw to start it. The pull rope should never be fully extended as this can cause wear and breakage. The second reason is for safety. If you don’t like to place the saw the ground, simply hold the handle part between your legs with a hand on the front handle, and the other hand pull on the starter rope. Just want to keep you safe.

Good morning. That is very good advice. I have been doing as you suggest for sometime now. I did notice that drop starting the saw is dangerous. I now use the saw on the ground holding it down with my foot method on cold starts and the between my legs method on warm starts. Yes you are correct on how to pull. Thanks and have a great day!

Have you ever had an issue with the damper? I was reading the reviews on the Drolet website and a review said their damper stuck open. I was almost sold on this model till I read that comment. Need to satisfy that concern before i purchase.

A planer would work. The debarker is basically a planer that also has a chainsaw chain that can cut.
