DIY Pheasants in North East Montana

- Explore the phenomenal DIY pheasant hunting opportunities in North East Montana near the community of Plentywood. Great pheasant hunting for the freelance hunter. Besides pheasants, there are also good numbers of Hungarian partridge and sharptail grouse. There is some public land in the area including waterfowl production areas but we found good bird numbers on some of the Block Management Areas that are private lands open to hunters through an access program implemented by the Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks. Compared to many areas of the Midwest with good pheasant hunting, it is also still possible to knock on doors and get permission.
We found the small towns in Montana very open to hunters. The motels allowed us to have dogs in the rooms for example for a minimum charge. People were friendly in the cafes. This part of Montana is special and it felt like traveling back in time.

Plenty wood I live near there we go there lots we are HUGE pheasant hunters but in general we are HUGE upland game hunters 👌👍
Big, wide open spaces! Plan on doing lots of walking after opening weekend. The birds concentrate in the heavier cover, so strategy pays off. These are not SD ditch chickens, but wild MT roosters! The sharpies and Huns are a surprise bonus for sure.

I stay in Plentywood on my way to Sask and always see pheasant in the area would love to hunt it, hopefully one day. Thanks for sharing really enjoyed it.

There were very few phez there this year!! Spent 8 weeks there 2020!!!
What areas did you hunt? We saw pretty decent bird numbers south and west of Plentywood. Hunted primarily all Block Management land.
Iowa same way. Bird numbers so low we only hunted until 10 each day. 🤐

This was filmed during the height of COVID and the communities were not comfortable having us film unless we mentioned the protocols at the time. Luckily that is all behind us.
