I agree! I think one or two firmware updates will take care of many of these issues. I also think trying to active track while filming in dlog might tax the drone a bit. It’s handling a LOT more data while also trying to active track.

Wondering if after a few firmware updates on the Mavic 3 the test can be done again. This was very interesting. We know when the Mavic 3 first went out there, it was far from been ready to hit the road. But eventually and after a number of firmware updates, it is now a tank. But the active track... which was disappointing at first. It is significantly better? Has anyone tested this again recently?
Awesome video mate, i am user of Air2s and feeling that mavic 3 is still not good as Air2s as this is crashing blindly.. Skydio is the trust and best buddy when you are busy in performing your act and not to look again and again at the drone.
The DJI Mavic 3, when tracking, will rise and/or move sideways to keep you in it’s view finder. And it does that automatically without warning. Does anyone know how high it will rise and move sideways? Is there anyway to guesstimate/anticipate that and avoid challenge? For example, you may be walking on the beach as in your video; what if there are trees on the other side and what will happen if you walk too close to the trees? Also, what if you set the obstacle avoidance to ‘brake’? Does ‘brake’ work during tracking? Will the M3 stop instead of trying to ‘Bypass’?
braking works too well at the moment. I found it just stops way to often thinking there is an obstacle in the way. as far as height goes it try to maintain a constant distance from the subject so if its 12 feet away from the front when it tries to go high it will try (not very well) and stay 12 feet away
Great review!! That part where it landed by itself without any input from you was really bizarre! Were you able to figure out what caused that? Or is it a firmware or design glitch? I have had my Mavic three for a little over a month and I really do not trust the active track or obstacle avoidance features yet. I put it through its paces at a local cemetery having it go between large markers and trees, and although it did well for the most part there were times when it would try to avoid a tree or a marker and nearly crash into something else. This comparison review definitely clinched my belief that I should not yet trust the Mavic 3 obstacle avoidance and tracking features. Hopefully a future firmware update will correct this. 🤞. As you said, it depends on what you use the drones for.
I hope the skydio 3 or whatever their next consumer drone is has a 1 inch sensor, 10 bit color, and log. If they did that I’d totally switch to them from DJI.
Great Video Jake, I love my Skydio 2 and I think the video that comes out of the camera is really good. I don't have the Mavic 3, to much $$ but have the Air 2s and video is also really good although I was flying yesterday with my variable ND filters and did not like the color change in the sky. sides were darker than the middle. What are you thought on variable filters?
Thank you very much and I agree the image out of the skydio is excellent. I usually don't put the variable ND filters all the way to the darkest due to this reason
Hey Jake. Is this on V01.00.0500 FW? I noticed the M3 was tracking really close, like it was on V01.00.0400. Also when in bright light and I have high contrast with surroundings, I get much better directional tracking. Like it hauls butt to get to the new position as I switch on the fly. Still it's not 100% trustworthy. In all fairness you were wearing black.
I was wearing black but even when I’ve been wearing red in this same area on other trips I’ve had the same issues. Yes it’s on the .0500 firmware and while the active track is MUCH better than older DJI drones it’s still definitely not on the Skydio level. I do think it will continue to improve with firmware updates over time though. Hopefully we will get the GPS fix soon as well. Cheers
@@JakeSloan I've heard tell of a beta out there for GPS sat. Aquisition. Hopefully soon. A small thing but it really irritates! Thanks for the comparison 👍
@@JakeSloan They also seemed to have fixed the ghosting on bottom wide angle sensors that caused many un-commanded altitude increases - in my case up to my set max altitude. Still get it a bit in APAS Bypass Mode during low sun angles at sunset/sunrises - those are glass lenses - but hugely improved.
I have not, I have asked many times but never been able to get a loaner drone and they aren't readily available here. From what I hear many people are quite happy with them
@@JakeSloan oh ok would have been good for them to let you test one..From my experience customer support is very bad and they don't try to improve or fix software issues. I recently bought one and have some issues out the box...hoping they reach back out to me and can get it resolved or else ill have a brick..
If DJI could acquire Skydio's software, it would be a game changer. Nothing on the market would come close to DJI at that point. They already have the tech to handle it.
I mean maybe. But everything DJI’s done in the past says they’ll make an attempt to emulate it themselves, not do great (and have it take forever), and not make it backwards compatible with any existing models, and will make you buy a new model to get it. Also keep in mind the Skydio uses some pretty hefty processing power to achieve their results. DJI would have to really take a jump in their DSPs and CPUs, which would cut into their profits. I like DJI but they often get good at something, then end up stagnating as they let their greed get ahead of them. They usually come back in a good way though. Usually (third party devs relying on their woefully ancient SDK which gets updated on a terrible schedule has been consistently bad).
Thank you for sharing and displaying these drones. I enjoy my mavic line of drones but guess won't buy the $2500.00 dji 3. way over price and not impressed with high dollar price tag. excellent demo and thank you.
I think it's better that the drone is controlled manually than that it flies by itself, because if you control it yourself you can take pictures as you want, but if it flies automatically, that's not quite possible
Say, do you carry some sort of s&m equipment on your backpack?? Nice!! #freak haha, jk. Very well done. I hope you made another video after giving the Mavic 3 the 1.00.0700 firmware release.
Thanks for the comparison. At the end of the day, I think I’m still choosing the Mavic 3 for overall performance. Sucks that Skydio can’t beat DJI when it comes to camera performance.
I am going to declate this as a tie. As a two years experienced UAV enthusiast, I declare that it was a tie between Skydio 2/2+ and Mavic 3/Cine for sure. There is no doubt that Skydio drones have the best Artificial Intelligence, Tracking and Obstacle Avoidance system whereas DJI drones are superb with breathtaking camera quality, Long Battery Life, Long Range and a wide variety of drones to choose. Both are really good product makers but I have to say that Skydio is a bit too harsh with DJI as shown in their official videos of telling the only the negatives or cons of a DJI drone and only positives or pros of a Skydio drone. Anyway, DJI is still the most famoua Drone brand out there, even though they are costly, they are worth it. My Mini 2 which costs around 1,100 US dollars is really durable and works very nicely!(yeah, it is a bit more expensive because nano drones are more pricey in India.) Also waiting to see a futuristic Skydio 3 and DJI Phantom 5 with DJI Inspire 3 as well as DJI Spark 2 and DJI Mini 3 Pro!
@@FahadKhan_3007 Skydio 3 definitely in the future. DJI Phantom 5 no further production updates most likely a dead project. DJI Inspire 3 definitely a possibility but have heard no rumors. DJI Spark 2 most likely will not happen as they like their "mini" platform way too much. DJI Mini 3 Pro will most likely happen in the near future possibly within 2023. As an experienced drone pilot of about 8 years as well as a fully certified FAA part 107 commercial drone pilot, I agree with your overall conclusion of the two models. "but I have to say that Skydio is a bit too harsh with DJI as shown in their official videos of telling the only the negatives or cons of a DJI drone and only positives or pros of a Skydio drone" this is just marketing. I've been around long enough to know that pretty much everybody does that. That's how corporations sell products. And lastly, unless you are doing very big jobs and have a pretty good business flow, which unfortunately not everybody has, DJI products can be quite expensive. Especially for the more recent products from DJI. It's pretty cost prohibitive. Especially if you want something on the level of the Mavic 3 cine. I think the market that Skydio is going for is a good move on their part. Their business plan is solid. And they are also catering to the more professional market with their X2 platform. That's their more professional platform for around $13k USD.
Unless I missed it, you didn't mention that the Hasselblad cameras make the DJI the best flying camera system available other than super-expensive cinematic cameras. The Skydio 2 can't begin to compete on image quality.
this was a active track and obstacle avoidance test, there is currently nothing on the market that can compete with DJI for image quality and price... They are just so dang good
Great comparison! They're both amazing aircraft, but, as you mentioned, really made for two different purposes or audiences. I have wanted a nice drone for a few years and DJI has been at the top of my list. I wanted a drone for capturing my adventures out on the ATV, so controlling a drone while riding at the same time was the challenge that held me back. I scoffed at Skydio when they came out, probably because I think the name is silly, but that's beside the point. I new DJI was the king of consumer drones and had all the experience...blah...blah...blah. Skydio was the new kid on the block, and I never buy brand new tech (or anything "1st iteration" for that matter), so I waited. Then the 2+ came out. Done deal! Take my money!! It arrived on March 1st, and I've only been able to take it out for two short fights, but I am SUPER IMPRESSED! Tracking is incredible! It's exactly the type of drone for me. I'm glad I waited! Not to buy the "Best" drone...but to buy the "Best for me" drone. BTW...I've never flown a drone before the Skydio. You can check out my 3rd flight ever (Horseshoe Knoll) on my page if you so desire. Let me know what you think! th-cam.com/video/KIq3DJCZtR4/w-d-xo.html

Is that you Jake or T-1000 running there 🏃😂 just kidding, great comparison and the Skydio blows the Mavic 3 away with AT and OA I wouldn't trust my Mavic 3 at all in any tight situation, hopefully they improve it.
Both of these drones are outside of my realistic price range at present (for uses that I could honestly justify the expense). However, I always appreciate your videos Jake and I can dream, can't I! I read somewhere that the Skydio 2 has 256 processing cores, which is the main reason for its remarkably intelligent behavior. Can anyone confirm if this is true? My understanding is also that the Skydio 2 is essentially a dedicated tracking platform and is far less flexible than something like the Mavic 3, which is designed to cover a wider scope of use (or which at least is designed to surpass the Skydio in everything except tracking). Again, can someone confirm if this is a fair evaluation?
The Mavic 3 is bound to get a massive firmware update soon from the time it was released 2 months ago, otherwise it's all set now and tracks like a dream
You bet! Don’t get me wrong. I love my air 2s. It’s fantastic for taking with me hiking traveling etc. it’s just the active track and obstacle avoidance isn’t as good as the mavic 3. It’s not terrible. Just not as good

Thanks for the review. Considering cost, I still would get DJI. The other one seem much outdated and a bit more like a toy.
DJI is putting out fantastic products
Wondering if after a few firmware updates on the Mavic 3 the test can be done again. This was very interesting. We know when the Mavic 3 first went out there, it was far from been ready to hit the road. But eventually and after a number of firmware updates, it is now a tank. But the active track... which was disappointing at first. It is significantly better? Has anyone tested this again recently?
they have massively improved the Mavic 3 with the updates however Skydio still wins hands down for tracking and obstacle avoidance
I would like to see this comparison with the firmware updates since this post. Just curious if the mav 3 has improved
I am working on that video now!
@Jake Sloan looking forward to it! Love the content. I am studying for my part 107 and starting my own now cause of it. Thank you!
I too am interested :)
Trees are quite naked in this forest, no branches or no bushes surrounding them. Did You test Skydio in a thicker forrest?
there are tons of small sticks and twigs there
@@JakeSloan ok didn't see that in the video, thanks.
Awesome video mate, i am user of Air2s and feeling that mavic 3 is still not good as Air2s as this is crashing blindly.. Skydio is the trust and best buddy when you are busy in performing your act and not to look again and again at the drone.
Thanks and I agree!!
When the mavic tracked you from the rear, did you tap your controller
nope
very interesting and expected. I guess I need both :D
Lol exactly!
can you choose what to track? like i stand at one area with the control and i want to track my friend as he ran away to area B
yes you can
@@JakeSloan thank you
Great demo...but what are those pants your wearing??
Those are the best outdoor pants I’ve ever found and they are made by Kuiu.
@@JakeSloan Thanks I'm gonna check for those. I'm a country boy and wear whatever but I'm gonna step it up a bit.
Great video Jake👍the skydio is really cool but the mavic is more who I am😎
Agreed! Different drones for different uses!
Did the Active Track got better by now? Its almost 1 year now
it is better still not as good as Skydio but better
@@JakeSloan thanks for replying! :))
Thank you for such informative video.
You’re welcome
Agreed and I never did figure out what happened in that one spot lol.
WHAT IS THAT LENS ON DJI MAVIC ? ROUND ?
it's an ND filter
Great review, thanks from Hawaii!
Thank you!
Jake, great video! Thank you. What camera bag do you recommend that fits the Skydio?
I’ve used the thinktank Mindshift 26l pretty well in the front pocket
That tracking is amazing on the Skydio!
agreed!
I hope the skydio 3 or whatever their next consumer drone is has a 1 inch sensor, 10 bit color, and log. If they did that I’d totally switch to them from DJI.
You and me both!! I'd drop DJI in a heart beat if Skydio had those options
Hi,have you ever tested any autel drones? evo II Pro v3?
I have not, I have asked many times but never been able to get a loaner drone and they aren't readily available here. From what I hear many people are quite happy with them
@@JakeSloan oh ok would have been good for them to let you test one..From my experience customer support is very bad and they don't try to improve or fix software issues. I recently bought one and have some issues out the box...hoping they reach back out to me and can get it resolved or else ill have a brick..
I want that cinematic quality from the Mavic 3.
me too!
What brand ND filters do you have on DJI?
I use Freewell filters on everything
If DJI could acquire Skydio's software, it would be a game changer. Nothing on the market would come close to DJI at that point. They already have the tech to handle it.
That would be incredible
Thx for the Video. Is Mavic 3 fixed now?
yes it is and it's fantastic
Thank you for sharing and displaying these drones. I enjoy my mavic line of drones but guess won't buy the $2500.00 dji 3. way over price and not impressed with high dollar price tag. excellent demo and thank you.
Thank you!
Those trees come out of nowhere! Lucky, your Mavic is ok!
Yeah they are sneaky like that! Lol
Jake, I would add another positive for skydio that helps me a lot, Skydio there is not No Fly Zone :)
Agreed!!!
Where is this location so beautiful
This Seward Alaska.
isso é briga de gigantes. Parabéns 👏👏👏
cheers
Run Jake Run , lol , had to say it. Mavic 3 can see miles away but can't see a tree in it's face , very interesting
Oh man I was so out of breath lol.
I think it's better that the drone is controlled manually than that it flies by itself, because if you control it yourself you can take pictures as you want, but if it flies automatically, that's not quite possible
True
Say, do you carry some sort of s&m equipment on your backpack?? Nice!! #freak
haha, jk. Very well done. I hope you made another video after giving the Mavic 3 the 1.00.0700 firmware release.
Lol. I haven’t directly compared but it is better for sure
What you don't go through for us Thanks for what you do
Thank you! It was fun and worth it. I don’t know if would have said the same if the mavic 3 had been badly damaged lol
Can the skydio 2 track the Mavic 3 through the trees?
no it will only track people
Thanks for the comparison. At the end of the day, I think I’m still choosing the Mavic 3 for overall performance. Sucks that Skydio can’t beat DJI when it comes to camera performance.
I agree!!
I think if Skydio had the overall quality of DJI AND the edge in tracking, it'd be even more expensive
My Mini 2 which costs around 1,100 US dollars is really durable and works very nicely!(yeah, it is a bit more expensive because nano drones are more pricey in India.)
Also waiting to see a futuristic Skydio 3 and DJI Phantom 5 with DJI Inspire 3 as well as DJI Spark 2 and DJI Mini 3 Pro!
Cheers!
@@JakeSloan Yeah
Let me know what you think! th-cam.com/video/KIq3DJCZtR4/w-d-xo.html
nice video! love the scenery so different from Alaska lol. I dare say you did get the perfect drone for you which is exactly why I make these comparison videos to try and help people decide which one is the best for their uses. Cheers!
Could have used a jump cut between 8:54 and 8:59 😬
Lol yeah but I thought I’d leave it in. It’s reality lol
Is that you Jake or T-1000 running there 🏃😂 just kidding, great comparison and the Skydio blows the Mavic 3 away with AT and OA I wouldn't trust my Mavic 3 at all in any tight situation, hopefully they improve it.
Hahahahaha I haven’t run that much in a LONG time!!
Again, can someone confirm if this is a fair evaluation?
you are correct on both accounts! Cheers mate
Jake's face at 8:58 tell you all about the problems with the Mavic 3 you need to know for a $3k drone
ROFL truth
Mavic Tree👍. I still love it. for all the reasons you mention and some, haven’t upgraded to the pro yet though 😂.
agreed any of the mavic 3 series are fantastic
Mavic tree 😂😂😂😂😂
Mavic 3 still my fave ;)
Mine too
Every drone has its pros and cons so if I had to pick one, definitely Mavic 3!!!
nice!
The Mavic 3 is bound to get a massive firmware update soon from the time it was released 2 months ago, otherwise it's all set now and tracks like a dream
since this video was made the updates have made it significantly better!
@Jake Sloan Yep I agree!
You should have used the Air 2s.
The air 2s struggles more than the mavic 3. I don’t trust it’s active track and obstacle avoidance at all
@@JakeSloan Wow. I didn't know that. Thanks for the info.
You bet! Don’t get me wrong. I love my air 2s. It’s fantastic for taking with me hiking traveling etc. it’s just the active track and obstacle avoidance isn’t as good as the mavic 3. It’s not terrible. Just not as good
Where is skydio 3 damn it …
Probably waiting for sone competition lol
38 BELOW zero! Brrrrrrrr. :)
Soooo cold!!!
bravo!!!!
Thank you
Price vs performance the DJI Mavic 3 wins hands down, Skydio 2+ is double of what it should cost for what it offers
Possibly
For manual flight the Mavic 3 wins all day, but when your talking tracking the Skydio 2 will win every time
100%!
Great comparison video. I would be so scared to do this with my mavic 3, lol
Lol I was scared!!
This just goes to show these tracking modes aren’t as good as they say, fore example DJI
sometimes in situations like this yeah they struggle
Skydio so amazing
Yes it is
Hopefully Sky2 upgrades battery life. Get it to 30 plus minutes and it’s perfect
Their latest battery is pretty dang close!
Damn😮 I didn’t realize the skydio2 was 2500 bucks !!
depends on the package you get
Dji definitely released the drone with unfinished software, at least it’s something that can be improved with time unlike hardware
agreed
Almost ran into the ground? It definitely did 😂
lol yeah kinda did
